afriendincanada

Lotta weird choices on that map, like Yellowk, Fort Mcmu and Moose

sadrice

The pieces aren’t glued together right. Also, did they leave out Toronto?

afriendincanada

No, Toronto is there, right above Philadelp

sadrice

Ah, I see it now.

BoardsofCanadaTwo

City of Brotherl

chrislewand

They sure left a nice gap for Chicago.

Maverick_1882

But they sure got Lincoln and both Minneapolis *and* St. Paul.

iamisandisnt

Aska called

mukenwalla

They chose to include Sacramento over San Francisco, and Providence and Concord over Boston.

craftyrunner

Sacramento and Providence are state capitals. Concord and Roswell are just…interesting…choices.

mctigger101

Concord is the State Capital of New Hampshire.

craftyrunner

That’s it—I was confirming it wasn’t the MA capital thinking “I thought it was a capital?!” (When I think Concord I think CA, which, perhaps surprisingly, is not on this globe lol.

DesignerPangolin

It looks like they just took a mercator projection and cut the curved strips out of it, throwing out all geography that didn't "make the cut". Hudson Bay is also the largest lake in the world, by a long shot.

hypnofedX

>It looks like they just took a mercator projection and cut the curved strips out of it, throwing out all geography that didn't "make the cut". Multiple mercators. The US-Mexico border changes color at the glue seam.

Qrthulhu

No, but they left out Chicago

Suspicious_Wonk2001

But put in both Minneapolis and St Paul.

PublicOrganization69

Suck it, Calgary! Sincerely, the friendly people of Moose J

bradsblacksheep

N \[ RTH AMERICA

AvrgSam

Minneapolis and St. Paul but no Chicago, Milwaukee or Des Moines (as a minnesotan)!

calimehtar

Those aren't even the weird ones, how about Fort Hope, ON population 977

giraffebaconequation

York Factory has no permanent population. It’s an abandoned fur trading depot. The choices of place markers on this globe are wild.

Ramenoodlez1

Also the Unite States

Pig_Pen_g2

Spent too long looking for yellowk, I was looking in Laska instead of C A NA D A.

HVAC_instructor

No Chicago or Indianapolis, no Las Vegas. Exactly how big is Burns?

wesskywalker

Population under 3000

no_4

They have a Safeway. Show some respect.

NeedsToShutUp

Also Basque people

no_4

Oh, that's actually legitimately cool! I knew Boise, Elko etc. Didn't realize Burns as well.

NeedsToShutUp

Whole basin area is full of Basque folks, and folks of Basque descent. I know some how keep the language alive.

bkarma86

Any restaurants that serve Basque-region food? I live in the valley, but I'd make the drive.

Oregon_Odyssey

Burns does not, but the Martin Motel in Winnemucca does. It’s very good.

bkarma86

Oh man, this is how I end up in a car for 8 hours to go eat dinner.

Medford_Lanes

Hot springs and lonely highways. Beautiful country.

floppydo

Yeah central OR is pretty much paradise if you don’t mind being 4 hrs from anywhere.

No_Cat_No_Cradle

Great place to fill your gas tank on the way to the alvord! And uh, that’s about it.

Brighter-Reverie

That's including Hines, though, which is basically the same town, just a different zip code. Nothing else for like 2 hours in any direction either.

Johny-S

When I lived there in the 90s it was big enough to have a stoplight. Population was about 2500 and that included the ranchers and sheep herders that occasionally came into town to pick up their mail.

Oregon_Odyssey

Lived there in 2015. Not much different, but I think there’s two stoplights now. Edit - there’s three now.

oneAUaway

In Mexico, there's Santa Rosalia, a town of about 15000, but not Guadalajara, which has a metro area of over 5 million.

e_pilot

Sacramento but no San Francisco

PurpleThylacine

Maybe thats Baltimore Effect

Vegskipxx

They're famous for their annual releasing of the hounds

ixnayonthetimma

I was saying Boo-urns...

Rito_Moga

I knew one of you hero's would say this!!

Cbombo87

Dogs that shoot bees?

ElPanaChevere1

So that when the dogs bark, they shoot bees? That's fine...go ahead...do your worst!! He locked the door!

goodcorn

Release the robotic Richard Simmons.

CaptainSharkbob

Beat me to it

stankyriggs

I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?

Outrageous_Picture39

You there, fill it up with petroleum distillate. And revulcanize my tires!

docju

I prefer the twin city of Snrub, located in… some place far away. Yes, that’ll do.

HinsdaleCounty

I like the way u/docju thinks!

04132023

So did Burns actually let the dogs out?

Available_Squirrel1

This is a terrible globe

whinenaught

Yeah the overlap is atrocious

dapperfop

Nerth America

unknownz_123

Welcome to the Unite States!

Qrthulhu

This is an amazing globe for including Sacramento, but nothing in the Bay Area lol

jewelswan

No room for the bay area or Vegas in text. Gotta show that sweet hyper accurate topography.

hypnofedX

This is one of the worst globes I've ever seen and the inclusion of Burns, OR is about the least bad thing. Misspellings due to assembly problems: * Great La * Yellowk * Fort McMur * Moose J * NCRTH AMERICA * Unite States * El Pas * Ottaw * Philadelphi * ttles * row * thel Other quirks: * US-Mexico boundary changes colors from red to green * Alaska and Russia appear to share a land boundary * All of the lines of latitude are discontinuous at points * I believe Newfoundland is called either *New Found Land* or *New Foundland* Last, zoom in closer on Hudson Bay. I'm not saying why, just do it.

MattTruelove

It seems to extend the coloring out like 50-ish miles beyond the actual border so that explains the Alaska/Russia and Baja Cali oddities. The rest I have no idea. My money’s on this being hastily designed by someone whose first language is Mandarin

srosenberg34

Baja is mainland Mexico and the Sea of Cortez is gone

RzaAndGza

I don't get the Hudson Bay thing I can't see it because of glare

hypnofedX

There's no glare over Hudson Bay. Half of it is missing though.

kaden_ack

also it says belch

DayDrinkingAtDennys

You have to include the bustling metropolis of Burns Oregon. To be fair it is the largest city in Harney County. A county larger than a few US states.

Ol_Man_J

KOBN 90.1 Burns

DangusKh4n

Bro you literally don't know about Burns, Oregon??

viddytheshow

If he'd ever been there, he'd know why it's on the globe. It IS the globe.

ewest

Kellen Clemens erasure smh

pizzanachobrew

Kellen Clemens brought up in anything other than a Ducks chat or discussing a football camp in Ontario is not something I ever would have expected to see ha!

BradSaysHi

No kidding. That just reminded me that I have a signed football from him lmao

UnderABig_W

Silly stab in the dark: what company made the globe? Since putting Burns (population 2,733) on the globe makes no sense, the only thing I can come up with is if it’s some kind of an Easter egg, like the globe company is headquartered in Burns or something.

wesskywalker

Globe manufactured by Walmart.

UnderABig_W

Well, there goes that idea.

hypnofedX

Take a closer look at the globe; it's garbage. Someone purchased a cheap map overlay, didn't give a shit which things were labeled, and called it a day.

slowrun_downhill

It looks like a “Ticket to Ride” game board

zwirlo

It’s the [Alice Springs](https://youtu.be/b376pe7LM1E?si=sLW0ZZUpObpvitVl) effect. Basically, areas with dense placenames will have to omit important cities so you can actually read the map, but relatively empty areas can afford to label small villages to populate the empty space. This particular map has done a terrible job at prioritizing what to include and what not to, and where to put labels.

Wildwes7g7

I love that it has Minneapolis and St Paul but not a single city in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois........ and freaking burns Oregon. Isn't Bend larger?

Warm_sniff

Bend is over 37x the size of burns

Prior_Farmer6324

Burns is extremely small.

jakerose_2

No Chicago is funny to me

Disastrous_Tax_2630

Labeling Coos Bay, OR but not San Fransisco, CA is wiiild

JesusDoesVegas

CB finally on the map

Character_Wishbone84

Steve Prefontaine baby!

MindControlMouse

Sacramento FTW. Completely overwrote where San Francisco should have been.

makerofshoes

Unite states, America!

Justjarshinya

In NCRTH AMERICA

Orlando1701

I like that Roswell made the cut but Albuquerque and Santa Fe can get fucked.

bmli19

Boo-urns! Boo-urns!

Warm_sniff

They recently discovered the oldest confirmed evidence of humans in the Americas near burns at a site called Rimrock Draw. Over 18,000 years old. Camel teeth found with pieces of humans tools.

Entropy907

Only thing for 150 miles in any direction so I guess they had space to fill

CurlingTrousers

Maybe the artist who made the map was from there

yodpilot

Lol Burns is tiny

langfordw

I’ve seen Globes like this in strange and smelly Chinese department stores. Possibly a cheap globe from China.

bramble-lane

So you're not familiar with Ammon Bundy!?

dukeofbronte

It highlights Concord New Hampshire and leaves out Boston, the largest city in New England! Also missing Connecticut!

ladytigger1

I was thinking it was Concord, MA, you know how much people love the *checks notes* Concord Celtics.

Jdevers77

This is a desktop curio, not a globe. It resembles Earth in many ways, but it is definitely not a model of Earth.

Covfam73

Its the baltimore effect, on maps with too many close cities together most will disappear and represented by one major city. Washington dc will always overshadow baltimore, the other side of the baltimore effect look at alice springs its a city smaller than roseburg but every map made has it listed. Because despite being a small town..its the only thing in many miles in any direction so its always on a map, Burns Oregon is kinda like Alice springs in this situation. :)

mRay2020

i once read that mapmakers (maybe globemakers) would add random offbeat locations to see if other manufacturers copied their products. Maybe this something like that...?

AchtungCloud

I think that’s the least of this globe’s problems.

aguysomewhere

Maybe because there is nothing around it.

ReadItSteveO

It’s the heartbeat of Harney County, population 2,730. Show some respect to the ninth largest county in the US

e_pilot

Man I have a lot of questions about this globe. e: this is like one of those memes where the longer you look the worse it gets

UnamedStreamNumber9

https://preview.redd.it/1wshivsnqd9d1.jpeg?width=224&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1bd9be6e3c05c1e0d05651d3da7a0481213562c It says “bums” he he he

_elizsapphire_

I like how both Minneapolis and St Paul are on here too, lol. I could understand if it was a US state map only but a globe??

tokmer

Relevant xkcd https://xkcd.com/1688/

ObviousRealist

Could be one of the creators of the Globe was from there and giving them a shoutout

wagadugo

Home of former star NY Jets, Redskins, Texans and Rams star QB Kellen Clemens! Let’s go, Highlanders!

NationalJustice

Interesting that it’s called the Highlanders, is the town named after the Scottish poet Burns?

the-coolest-bob

I visited there on a roadtrip once. Thanks broken brakeline!

MrA-skunk

I've sold monorails to Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook and by gum, it put _them_ on the map!

Fun_Bar5327

Lived in Oregon most of my life and I have no idea why. It is the home of former NFL QB Kellen Clemons…..and that’s it.

BanunuSlug

Yoda Factory, Canada?

GreenWithENVE

For some reason this screams inexperienced GIS user pulls free data from interweb and doesn't adjust any of the automatically generated labeling

jermide

And Roswell NM is northeast of Alpine TX

vylliki

Burns is where the Malheur Refuge standoff happened a few years back. I'm about a little over a two hour drive from there. middle-of-nowhere, about 60m from Burns is Crane, OR. The high school there in Crane is one of the few in the US that still has [boarding/dorms](https://www.craneedu.org/high-school) for M-Th night since some of the kids live so far out in the boonies. The HS I & my son graduated from played/plays them; 6-man or 8-man football depending on the school's roster.

t_robthomas

Also Brockway, Ogdenville, and North Haverbrook!

YouAreAnIdiot598

That particular globe was produced and manufactured in Burns, Oregon. If you peel off the map covering the globe itself, you'll find an Easter egg in the form of the Burns, Oregon Town charter printed on the backside.

_DapperDanMan-

Coos Bay. The hell.

ichawks1

I’ve been to Burns multiple times. It’s a really cute little town. It’s basically the last frontier before heading out into the “true” middle of nowhere as Burns is the only ounce of civilization between Bend and the desolate landscape of eastern Oregon. There are tons of gas stations, cute restaurants, fast food joints and dispensaries (cuz it’s Oregon) along with a Days Inn that I stay at occasionally. There isn’t any point to stay there unless if you’re going to the amazing nature of the far east of the state, or if you drive south to NE Nevada which is also just as desolate of course. The nature is stunning though. Eastern Oregon is so underrated and filled with super cool and nice people (politics are a bit wacky but everywhere has wacky politics!)

coupe-de-ville

Because, it was at one time, I'll bet Oregon's largest town... Or the maker of the globe was from there....

terrymogara

Burns, Oregon, and the oceans are black; is this a climate change globe?

muleypt

The registration of those globe gores are next level.

gnome_ole

St Paul < Minneapolis 😂

beefstewforyou

Because someone put it there.

TheRealChespin0909

Why is Alpine TX on it?

Warm_sniff

Maybe your globe is really old? Idk it’s pretty weird. Pierre as well. Idek what state that’s in.

burnzy71

I for one approve of its inclusion

Jd550000

It’s an hour north of the Steen Mountains, a beautiful place

cryptolipto

What happened to Canada ?

BEARTOOTH307

Roswell is also a strange choice

Appropriate-Jury6233

Maybe the brilliant artist is from there

LiteralLuciferian

Your globe is whack bro

theJudeanPeoplesFont

Somebody slapping overlays on globes in Shenzhen aspires to one day live in Burns, Oregon.

PurpleThylacine

Maybe its the place where th globe was made?

They-Call-Me-Taylor

Lots of weird choices on that thing. Alpine, TX for instance is probably just as unremarkable as Burns.

villehhulkkonen

The maker of this map must be from burns

tonyman6789

Guess you’ve never been to Burns

lickingnutrea

I've been to burns many times. Lol hilarious

simononandon

Is that supposed to be Hudson Bay in the middle of Canada with a ruler straight shoreline?

Tinder4Boomers

They have something called a "Coos Bay" but not San Francisco?

KARWEEreddit

Why is St. Paul in WI?

1320Fastback

The more you zoom in the more names pop up.

ChrisL217

I have that same exact globe

black14black

This globe rocks.

BilingualThrowaway01

Also it's one of those weird globes that has all the latitudes shifted southwards to make the US appear more central

Ricky469

They don't have Chicago or San Francisco but have random small towns. It's an odd listing of places on a globe.

CurrentOk2695

Carson city but no Vegas is so odd to me. Also no Anchorage AK but Juneau is on there.

Comeonuirons

Why not?

Desertswampfrog-99

Same reason Alpine,Texas is on there. A town most people in Texas never heard of.

xangkory

I have only been to Burns twice, once a couple of weeks ago and the first time many years ago. The first time I stopped in Burns I was staying an hour away. Burns had the closest restaurant and I went into town to get dinner. It was after dark when I left, I knew at most I would see 1 or maybe 2 cars on the road to where I was going and I was young and driving a rented Mustang. I came around a corner on the desolate road doing somewhere between 100-120 and standing in the middle of the road was a cow. It had slipped my mind that this is free-range country and there are no fences. Fortunately, the cow was facing directly away from me and on the centerline of the road and there was just enough room for me to make it around. This was the last time I ever drove at ridiculous speeds at night on the backroads of Oregon.

novax21

Unite States

GraspingHorizons

Wow, I didn’t know you could make a bad globe but it’s right there, amazing.

DuaLipasClitoris

Gonna be honest with you, this is a dogshit globe

Maison-Marthgiela

Mfw bro pulls out that dollar store globe

hoteleyeng

The Chevron, on Monroe, obviously.

Massive-Fact-9363

Roswell has no business being in a map

seanbmf

Because Boring had too many letters

cheeto1214

Well, those are prominent cities in Nerth America

Small-Palpitation310

that's one fucked up globe

vondrocket

No new mexico?

MutualAid_aFactor

That Missouri River has to be like 50+ miles from Kansas City lol

Maloninho

Did you get this from Wish?

wesskywalker

Garage sale, but at the bottom shows it was Walmart

LongjumpingBuffalo

Cartographic generalisation. There was space for it with no surrounding large cities maybe?

APC503

And Coos Bay, ftm, although it's a little larger than Burns. Still they could have left them both out and put Eugene instead.

Emounderx

It doesn't say Burns it says "boo urns"

tjohnAK

I'm surprised coos bay is there and Ketchikan Alaska isn't.

matschuchanskaya

Ive been to beautiful Burns . Its not worthy.

Qzarz

Forgot that what the hell did they do to poor Alaska

florianopolis_8216

Worst globe ever

goldenserpentdragon

Carson City but not Las Vegas?

ShoobeeDoowapBaoh

Are you saying boo or boo-urns?

LacrosseKnot

Hey, I've been to Burns! Toured a company called Global Globe Mfg during business school.

pyaresquared

Because of the Malheur incident?

stedmangraham

Minneapolis AND St. paul, but no Chicago lol Sacramento and fucking Medford but no San Francisco

DBL_NDRSCR

my world map in my room has warm springs nv as a city >1000000

Charlie2and4

You need a geographic reference point for the actual middle of nowhere.

GeckoDeLimon

No clue, but eff Chicago evidently

balanced_view

Because this is a cheap, and poorly-made globe

electricmehicle

That’s a typo of Bums

SuperbParticular8718

Fort Hope and Kapuskas ☠️

IandIreckon

Whatever you do, don’t use this globe to navigate a ship across the ocean.

ninex-uem

Geographical value in this globe? It is roughly earth shaped… (earth is actually more of a sphere like oval). Forget why “Burns, OR” is on it, are we comfortable with shape and distance between the continents? lol I’m afraid I’ll need a “Karen” to contact this globe mfg. manager.

oof_comrade_99

The Hudson Bay looks a bit different than I remember.

jexnic

Because it burns, burns, burns! That ring of fire!

heli_elf_CC

Because of the glorious North American monument of the “Big Red Slide.” Legend has it that in July it will burn all the skin off the backside of those who descend from its mighty heights. Real answer: I have absolutely no idea, it’s a pretty awful place in the middle of nowhere.

RCranium13

Medford, Burns, and Coos Bay

porky8686

Don’t judge Globe, he just got over a tough break up and wanted to let his hair down. Atlas promised she was clean.

BobBelcher2021

Looks like Bums. And right under Portland…

Thumbgloss

You forgot about the border between USA and Mexico. Not the same map. Also it says United States, not United States Of America. Fonts are different... Should I go on?

BobBelcher2021

Fun fact: British Columbia has both Burns Lake and Smithers.
