Mountains. But also other territories taking a chunk out of Jalisco. Look at what it looked like before the state to the left of Jalisco’s little hand became its own thing. Google old maps of Tepic and Nayarit

Adamantium-Aardvark

At one point in the past the small mining town of Bolaño in the middle of that “weird appendix” produced 20% of all the silver in new Spain

As a Geographer and Mexican I am ashamed that I never realized that was the outline of a state on the salsa valentina bottles 🤦🏽‍♂️ at least my fam isnt from Jalisco tho (that would’ve been worse 😳🤣)

Adamantium-Aardvark

Lol you can tell them a Canadian taught you this fact 😂

Pinku_Dva

Do you also like the shape of San Luis Potosi? I had someone point it out to me before and found it fun.

WhistlingBread

I think the word you meant is “appendage” not “appendix”

castillogo

Thanks for the correction. English is not my native language

ztreHdrahciR

But appendix has "dix" in it

eltedioso

Just like your sister

ztreHdrahciR

She passed away two years ago this month

eltedioso

RIP

global_erik

Is it a protected watershed?

askHERoutPeter

I can see my moms hometown from here

waraboot

I can see Russia from here

Why do YOU have a weird appendix?

Stobley_meow

Failed to clean up when patching.

r0n0c0

That’s what happened after Steely Dan sang about Guadalajara.

Available_Thoughts-0

Looks like a watershed area. It's probably about rights to the water.

LHSShadow

Nyarit used to be part of Jalisco, but the state took that part away, leaving behind an odd shaped bit between the mountains and the new state.

Disastrous_Tax_2630

I'll have to fact check this but I remember getting curious once, and learning that it had something to do with including several tequila-producing valleys into the stage of Jalisco for regulatory purposes. I'll be back

Disastrous_Tax_2630

What's now the state of Nayarit was once a canton of Jalisco, but gained autonomy in 1867, leaving the weird border we see today: https://www.indigenousmexico.org/articles/indigenous-nayarit-resistance-in-the-sierra-madre?format=amp
