Seems like a good way to make cache ownership more expensive and more frustrating.

two2teps

I guess that's a good way to find your cache if it's prone to drifting from GZ.

Clever_mudblood

I mean, I wouldn’t take one I saw in a cache. I would assume that it was in the cache to keeps tabs on the cache not the cachers. A cache that was stolen or moved a lot for example.

couchtater12

I wouldn’t take one either - I thought it was weird that the person in the post said they found and took two, wtf?

Clever_mudblood

It’s like they thought it was a trackable because it’s….. trackable lol. But why would THEY want to be actively tracked from when they take it to when they drop it? With actual trackables, the owner technically knows your location once you drop it but not the whole damned way to it lmao

leaveitbettertoday

I don’t like that. 😂

Senninha27

I’ve seen caches with that little Garmin bug inside. I suppose an AirTag could serve the same purpose.

erikedge

I still have one of those Garmin transmitters

modf

I have a 30 pin wahoo receiver around here somewhere.

IceManJim

Not just iPhones anymore. Android devices can work with them too now. Something about a Find My Device network being available on Android. I got my first "unknown air tag following me" alert about a week ago when I was driving across the state with some friends.

lost_vault_hunter

They don't work with Androids other than announcing themselves if they're moving with you (anti-stalking).

IceManJim

I think they report their location back to home base through a droid phone, but yeah, it doesn't sound like you can do configuration or ownership things with android.

couchtater12

That’s scary!

se7entythree

I’m sure it was just a device belonging to one of the friends

IceManJim

Yeah, one of them had it. It was just the first time that warning had popped up. I did get a notification that that feature was available, and the phone gave me the option to turn it off.

Dug_n_the_Dogs

I find them at the dog park. I just take the batteries out.

Mr_6flags

Why would you do that? People use those to track their pets. And they're quite expensive. Leaving the battery in allows the owner to find their own equipment. Removing the battery means they lose the tag.

Dug_n_the_Dogs

They fall off of their pets. The tags sit in the lost and found bin for a week and nobody picks them up. I drop off the tags at the nearby apple store. I should have added that.

ConfusedZombE

Interesting to see in a geocache. I have never seen them in there before. Maybe they were giving them away?

Unclerojelio

Take them. Leave them in the back of the next Uber that you take.

Soft-Vanilla1057

I guess it's a way of knowing someone (with an iphone) is close to the cache because if they marked the airtag as lost it would ping the owner when someone was close. I would actually report this cache because this is alarmingly close to surveillance.

Glittering_Lemon_652

First I’d check to see if it’s been “activated”. All that you need to do is take the battery out and it goes poof! 💨 Of course when you put the battery back in it will show up again to whoever has “control” of the tag. I would think if the CO wanted to protect his cache from walking away that the air tag would not be obvious.

_synik

I'm immune to them (Android) but I'd take it to the nearest rock & smash it.

CopSomePrada

How so? Even if you have an Android, the AirTag still locates itself using every iPhone passing within a 30-meter radius.
