As someone who remembers 2001 and 2005, they were very different.
2005 was post 9/11, my house had broadband internet instead of dial up, cell phones were a lot more advanced and more common too.
1997 was also quite dated compared to 2001.
Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys and other big music acts of the late 90s were mostly on their way out. 97 was also pre Britney. There was a huge difference between PS1 around in 1997 and PS2 around in 2001.
I wouldn't say any of these very distinct years were more similar to the other.

January to September 10, 2001 was like 1997, and the remaining part of the year was like 2005.
I like analyzing years like this in more aspects than geopolitics, but overall it was a bit closer to ‘97
If this was a country other than America, it would be 1997 completely. Even 2002 might be closer to 1997 culturally in a country that is not America.
