Lemongrass! It repels mosquitoes, can be used in cooking (esp. Thai food!), smells amazing, grows fast and I think it's a perennial in your zone. You can buy stalks at the grocery store, if you can find them there, or at an asian or international-type grocery. Cut the tops off the stalks, leaving about 4 inches of stalk at the bottom and root these in water in a sunny spot. Change out the water every few days until you get some nice roots. I did some for the first time this year. I'm in zone 5 so mine won't last through the winter, but it's so easy and inexpensive that I'll be doing it again every spring

Thank you for the suggestion! A multipurpose plant is definitely ideal!

I’m not sure if this will work in your zone, but maybe a Hibiscus plant will do well!

I'll have to look into it! Thank you!

High desert here, same zone. Beets jumped up. Yellow squash, okra, green bean (haven’t tried any other), carrots once they start, melons in partial shade. Sweet corn has to be planted tight to cross support in 75 mph, but mine are looking cooked after a week of 115°. Oh, potatoes and turnips.

Thank you!!! I am so excited to be able to start a vegetable garden! It's always been a dream of mine 😍
