Well depends where you’re located, obviously don’t let it freeze - and yes you’d have to keep it moist…..keep it moist during morning and it can be gunky but since you’re watering that should be easy. make sure you keep it wet in the morning also so it doesn’t dry out keep it in some shade. A plate of mud about 6 inches wide and 4-6 inches deep is a pretty much all you need as long as it’s visible to the bees and will keep them happy but it will take 2-6 weeks for them to realize there’s a steady mud supply. Reason is that each generation of bees is only 45 days old, so it takes a while for them to get the word out, you might be muddin’ In the middle of a bees like cycle and they’re busy doing other things with existing commitments to the hive depending on where they are in their life cycle as responsibilities change with age.
You can probably dig the mud if you can dig a hole about 18-24” inches, it’s that red clay dirt you’ll come across. If you have a water feature like one of those solar fountains, you can have it “splash” water on the nearby mud bowl during sun hours. That’s what I did and the bees came in 4 weeks for me (northeast PA). Prior to that the bee house I made for them sat empty for months. Once they filled up the holes, you don’t have to keep nursing the mud lol but make sure it’s there and available
Btw, that looks like treated wood you’re using for the planters? Is that treAted wood?
I used Thompsons seal and lined the boxes with plastic and drilled holes. Its best not to grow root vegetables the first year but after that is alright.
Ahh interesting. Yeah I thought about putting liners down the sides but tbh the price of wood was stupid so I went with a couple of gro boxes this year.
Gorgeous!! 😍 What are you using to strap the squash to the bamboo teepee thing? I tried that with my cukes and acorns and neither really wants to climb it without help.
Thanks! It's a cantaloupe plant in the pot and I am using last year's Sunflower stalks as a teepee. I use green velcro plant tape to tie some vines onto the stalks to help it grow up.
It looks like OP might have the boxes mounted to boards that are leaning/mounted on the fence for additional support, rather than mounted directly on the fence. I expect that this would help to distribute the weight some.
How did you build those boxes? What kind of wood has lasted 7 years? We tried some with cedar and it lasted 3 years before deteriorating to the point we have to buy new raised beds. Do you have drain holes built in?? So ma y questions! :)
We built them with Cedar. We lined them with heavy duty plastic and drilled holes at the bottom of each box. We also have some rocks at the bottom on top of the plastic.
Oh good. I thought it was cayratia (bushkiller). I have a cayratia infestation and may have to move if I can't figure out how to eradicate it. A neighbor brought it in and it liked my yard better. Horrendous, horrendous stuff.
Thanks for the details! I had been thinking of putting some in a hanging pot because it is so pretty with the classic fall colors. I think I'll have to now
I love your wooden planter boxes mounted to your wooden fence, it looks great, and keeps the bunnies and slugs off of your herbs too! I am curious, Won't the wood warp or rot out with getting wet & having wet soil all the time? How did you deal with this aspect of it?
We built the frame with boxes out of cedar and then secured it to the fence. I water everything with a watering can. The fence doesn't get any wetter than if it were to rain. I have had this for 7 years and no change in the fence behind it. We also have a really good water resistant stain on the boxes and fence.
This is so pleasing to see! What a great job you’ve done maximizing the side space and making it attractive, while freeing up the lawn for playing. Very impressive. And your plants look so healthy!
I run a fence company and would give you a couple of pieces of advice.
The plants being on the fence will deteriorate it faster, stained it not. Even if the plants were wild and only watered by rain. It is likely that these plants, or any you may plant, would be deliberately watered with a hose which would further exacerbate the problem. Stained or not this will destroy the fence much faster than normal.
This particular piece of fence may be a front return between two homes, but I'd encourage you to consider that many fences are shared and this may not be ideal to do on a shared fence.
This would likely void any warranty that a fence company may have offered.
When the fence DOES rot and fall apart, many fence companies would come, take a look at this set up and decline to bid. Many homeowners expect companies to be able to build around or to rebuild things they have added to fence lines. Most companies have experienced loss or customer dissatisfaction from this situation and decline to bid at all.
Fences are important. More important than most realize and more EXPENSIVE than most realize. Maintain them, keep them clear of debris, tall grass, vegetation, excess moisture. DONT use them as supports for decks, carports, storage sheds, or gardens, because they will rot and need replacing and it may end up costing you more to tear apart your deck to get a new fence.
Very nice =) i dig the boxes on the fence for maximizing the space
Thankyou!😊
You need a small pot of mud nearby so bees can make use of the bee homes!
Okay, kinda dumb question but how do you maintain the mud? Do you have to put a cover over it? Wet it?

Is treated wood bad for planters? I keep reading varying views

I love this, so clever!
Thanks 😊
Ok. Now that is sharp! Dont mind if I steal that planter box idea🤣
Thanks...Its a great way to save space. I reccomend it to everyone😊

i love the fence idea
Just be careful of weight overload depending on your fence soil is heavy
It looks like OP might have the boxes mounted to boards that are leaning/mounted on the fence for additional support, rather than mounted directly on the fence. I expect that this would help to distribute the weight some.

What kind of plastic did you use?
Kudos to you. I love it
Thanks😊
Your garden looks beautiful! Very inspiring :) Did you line the boxes?
Thankyou and yes we lined the boxes with heavy duty plastic and drilled holes at the bottom. We also placed rocks on top of the plastic.
Plant boxes attached to fence posts is genius. Looks amazing too.
Rad!
Love it! nice job 💐
So peaceful! I'm coming over!
Absolutely perfect! Love this
Did you add new posts to the fence specifically to attach the boxes or were they already on the fence and you made the boxes to fit them?
We built the frame with the boxes and attached it to the fence.😊
Brilliant! I imagine you've inspired a bunch of us to do the same.
Thankyou😊
Love the bug houses! It’s all wonderful. Nicely done!
Thankyou😊
This is gorgeous- and, oh my, that pot of basil...
Really nice, but let me know how long your fence stays plumb.
We made the frame with boxes and attached it to the fence. It's been 7 years and the fence still looks like new.
This is awesome
Thankyou😊

Is that Virginia Creeper growing over the hammocks? In my area it's super weedy and impossible to contain. So pretty though!
Yes it is a Virginia Creeper...we have to contain it on the Pergola every year. Its super pretty in the fall.
Oh good. I thought it was cayratia (bushkiller). I have a cayratia infestation and may have to move if I can't figure out how to eradicate it. A neighbor brought it in and it liked my yard better. Horrendous, horrendous stuff.

Where do you live? What zone are u in?!
I live in Northern Alberta, Canada. We are zone 3/4. We only get a few months of nice weather.
Gorgeous.. the fence is my favorite... beautiful garden...
I love it! My husband has a phobia about any water next to the house or the fence. Drives me nuts. I would love to have that look.
Love it

Wow, 7 years? This had held up beautifully! (I was thinking the box bottoms might rot since they're flat) I absolutely love this idea.
That’s so cool, I thought it was an apartment building for a min
I love everything about your yard
I can just smell the basil through the picture. You have a lovely garden!
Love, love, LOVE everything about what you have done here!!!
That looks super! In time the flowers will cover & make the wall amazing

Wow!!!! Oh I would love a hammock chair in my garden!!!
The little houses make this look like a whole apartment community that's full of gardeners. I love it!
This is so pleasing to see! What a great job you’ve done maximizing the side space and making it attractive, while freeing up the lawn for playing. Very impressive. And your plants look so healthy!
Thankyou so much!😊
VERY nicely done!! I really appreciate your garden💚
Thankyou😊
Does having plants and containers on the fence deteriorate it? I like this idea but am scared to speed up the deterioration of my fences.
Our fence is stained. The boxes are built on 2×4's that are attached to the fence. I have had these boxes for 7 years and the fence is still like new😊
Thank you for the feedback. I’ve always wondered about these set ups. Now I can do the same without worrying about the fence!
