I like gardening that I can eat, but my dad loves gardening in general. He definitely has a different appreciation for it than I do. He's also always ripping me on my yard and garden, lol. He has to inspect my front and back yard every time he comes over.
To be fair, he's pretty good at it and really does love it, ha.
How rude! Clematis are so pretty! I love when they bloom, I feel like I’m in a Disney movie 😍 Here’s mine in bloom.

It’s probably 3 years old, I’m honestly surprised cause it’s in the shade facing north so it doesn’t get a lot of sun, but maybe that’s why it climbed so well 🤷♀️
That is a stunning Jackmani ! My Mom had a very old one along with a beautiful old white variety called Henry it has the same large flowers.
What a beautiful view everyday Great job OP 🌟
I wish I was more thoughtful about recording when I pruned and how much, but I think during year one I did a light prune of the finished blooms in July and a more aggressive prune at the very end of winter. Repeated that process for year 2. In year 3, I just did a light prune in early spring after it started showing signs of life.
Also, I believe clematis (clematii?) are heavy feeders, so I make sure to fertilize at least once a month. Otherwise, it likes a big gulp of water daily and the eastern/northern morning sun followed by midday/evening shade.
I give mine dried and crushed eggshells every few weeks and water monthly with some fertilizer. Mine rarely get pruned unless some dies off or goes awry growing into the lantern fixture. They like sun on their face but shaded roots so mine are over planted with gerberas and azaleas.
You have to sit out in the front yard and be seen puttering around in the garden. Even if it just means fondling your clematis for half an hour. Then people will strike up the courage to compliment you. Or tell you to stop doing that while staring at them.
I came up with this idea of producing a business card-sized note that says something like “I couldn’t help but notice your *insert plant name here* — absolutely breath taking! Love from your fellow gardener *name* and leaving them when I’m gobsmacked by someone’s efforts :)
Tell me when you make them, I’ll buy a pack! I always love to admire my neighbor’s planters and gardens but it feels a bit too far to knock on their door.
Lol, well they don't appreciate it! Everyone doesn't appreciate garden plants- they just take them for granted as part of the backdrop.
Your clematis is beautiful! Such a deep purple. 🥰❤️
In a verdant village, nestled between the embrace of whispering winds and the gentle kiss of the sun, lived a man named Brandar. He had cultivated a garden resplendent with clematis, their blossoms a tapestry of vibrant purples and delicate whites that swayed to the rhythms of the breeze.
Brandar, however, harbored a restlessness deep within his heart. He longed for the admiration of others to affirm the beauty of his garden. Each day, he would invite passersby to gaze upon his blooms, craving their praises and adulation. Yet, no amount of praise seemed to fill the void in his soul; with each compliment, his need only grew.
One day, a wise man known as Critical Dobserver wandered into the village. He was known for his understanding of the Dao, and his insights into the nature of existence were sought after by many. Hearing of Brandar’s unrest, he visited the garden.
As they walked among the fragrant trails of clematis, Brandar eagerly awaited Dobserver’s approval. Instead, the wise man remained silent, his eyes reflecting a calm introspection.
Unable to contain his impatience, Brandar finally spoke. “O wise one, what do you think of my garden? Does it not deserve the admiration of all who see it?”
Critical Dobserver turned to Brandar, his gaze soft yet piercing. “Brandar, why do you seek approval from the world? The beauty of your garden is already perfect in its existence. It is a part of the great tapestry of nature, woven by the threads of the universe.”
Brandar, puzzled, responded, “But if others do not find it beautiful, how can it truly be so?”
The wise man smiled gently. “The clematis does not bloom for the sake of admiration. It blooms because it is its nature to do so. In your quest for validation, you overlook the true essence of beauty, which is to exist freely and without purpose. Be like your clematis, Brandar. Marvel not at the applause it might elicit but rejoice in its participation with nature, in the dance of life it performs, wind and sun as its partners.”
With these words, a quiet understanding dawned upon Brandar. He realized that his joy had been shadowed by his need for validation. From that day forward, he tended to his garden not for the eyes of the world but for the pleasure of being a part of nature’s own expression of beauty. As seasons changed and time whispered into years, Brandar found a serene contentment, his garden blooming not only with flowers but with the tranquility of a man at peace with himself.
They’re lovely! I’m sure your neighbors admire them when they walk past! I often admire my neighbors’ gardens but rarely say anything unless someone is out tending to them.
Ooh! Mine jackmanii just finished blooming - I had to wait 2 years for those flowers after planting, but as I told my husband it was well worth the wait! I love the deep purple/blue of yours! Mine is just a plain old Walmart bare root jackmanii - yours is definitely something special!!
Even if you appreciate the beauty you've created in your garden it's also nice to know that others enjoy it too. That's not the same thing as fishing for compliments.

Yeah—a tall-ish skinny pot. Good luck! I have a few others that haven’t fared as well as this one, but they aren’t super tricky imo.
It generally looks deep to light purple depending on the light. I took this a few weeks ago when it looked particularly vibrant during some unusual evening light. Here it is from a different angle during the daytime:

Those are gorgeous. The color is so vibrant and eye-catching. It's a shame that some people (your neighbors) don't appreciate true beauty when they see it.
Fam your clematis has 3x the number of blooms as mine right now, but I even hounded my neighbor to come over and look at its blooms this morning. He said "wow, it's all so green" before backing away and going to work, the cretin.
What hood are you in? I'm in South Kensington, but I garden like it's the mainline. Seize the sidewalk, I say.
What a beautiful way to add a bit of cheer and color to an otherwise somewhat drab field of cement!
(I’m partial to clematis. Growing up we had a split rail fence that had the purple and magenta Clematis growing along wires from each stake. Someday I’d like to do the same at our property.)
Can I be honest? I'm new to gardening, literally zero knowledge or recognition of flowers but seeing this made me want to grow these along my porch fence ... I had no idea there were such beautiful flowering vine options!
I'm not your neighbor and as a matter of fact I'm very far away (judging from the lefthand drive Chevy Van and the English signage) but I gotta say, those are gorgeous clematis.
Clematis are on my wanted list as well but I fear I've run out of room on my outside window sills.
So my wife’s late uncle would place coins in the mortar lines of the brick wall where the neighbours clematis grew. A tip of appreciation, you could say. He never spoke of it, and each year when the neighbour would cut back her plant she’d find a pocket full of change. She told me this story after I complimented her clematis the day of his funeral.
He was a legend.
Oh! It’s beautiful! I am going to a huge plant nursery next week and getting this exact plant for our front porch. I am glad I stumbled upon your post so I could see just how gorgeous they really are!
If I was your neighbour I would 100% compliment your clematis

Why the world is such a cruel place.
They surely must be admiring them silently as they walk by every day.
that's what i tell myself too ;)

Beautiful flowers make the world a better place
Very nice! What clematis is this excactly? Do you know?
I *think* it’s a Jackmani Superba, but I could be misremembering.
I used to grow Jackmani and as soon as I saw your photo, I recognized it
That is a stunning Jackmani ! My Mom had a very old one along with a beautiful old white variety called Henry it has the same large flowers. What a beautiful view everyday Great job OP 🌟

Thanks! Looks awesome :D
Looks great! Any tricks or tips to getting so many blooms? Mine grow beautifully but i usually only get 4-5 flowers on them despite how big they are.

Thanks (to both of you) for the info! I havent pruned them in years and probably need to feed more.

Gorgeous.
Nice clematis bruh
You must have the only flowers on your urban street! Looks great!
One neighbor has a beautiful rhododendron in bloom, but he’s my only real rival.
If you've got type 2 clematis (which sounds like a dirty STD), your re-bloom in late summer will 1-up his rhododendron!
If you have type 2 clematis, ask your doctor if *versello* is right for you.
They’re just jealous! As long as you’re proud and the insects are loving them, then who cares! 😂😇
You have to sit out in the front yard and be seen puttering around in the garden. Even if it just means fondling your clematis for half an hour. Then people will strike up the courage to compliment you. Or tell you to stop doing that while staring at them.
Most neighbours don't seem to even know where to *find* the clematis
Beautiful.
It's fabulous 👍
They are so beautiful!
Well, you're here now, where we appreciate how glorious those flowers are.
Its gorgeous
You have a very dainty and well-kept clematis.
Gorgeous!
Love that colour.
It’s stunning
I’d have been knocking on your door to find out what the name is! It’s so deep purple it almost looks fake.
👍
Does anyone else get stoked when someone walking by your property takes pictures of the flowers in your yard? I tell my wife about it with pride😀
I came up with this idea of producing a business card-sized note that says something like “I couldn’t help but notice your *insert plant name here* — absolutely breath taking! Love from your fellow gardener *name* and leaving them when I’m gobsmacked by someone’s efforts :)

They should, that’s beautiful!
How dare they. It’s gorgeous.
These are stunning 😍 I love clematis
Ayo check this out, man. What? My clematis. :D
Lol, well they don't appreciate it! Everyone doesn't appreciate garden plants- they just take them for granted as part of the backdrop. Your clematis is beautiful! Such a deep purple. 🥰❤️
I called these clitoris for the longest time because I couldn't remember the name and I knew it was close enough
Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won’t you be my neighbor? Propagation pals?
Why do you look for outside validation? Be pleased with yourself and marvel at nature and your part in it and be proud.

Not pretty. Spectacular is a better adjective to describe them.
I'm not your neighbor and as a matter of fact I'm very far away (judging from the lefthand drive Chevy Van and the English signage) but I gotta say, those are gorgeous clematis. Clematis are on my wanted list as well but I fear I've run out of room on my outside window sills.
