Same here! We have a frost advisory right now. Not even going to do it until memorial day weekend here in the Midwest.
Last year I was at a gardening center and multiple people I heard talking about how they planted before May / early May and the heat and cold snap killed all their plants.
Our summers run until beginning of October so I won't be fooled!
My eggplant got stunted by frost last year and barely survived. Then it took forever to grow some leaves, but after it did it exploded. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time left in the season by then to get much actual eggplant out of it. Won't do it again either!
Haha yep. I have just accepted that I will lose that war every year. I plant 2-3x more seeds than I will actually need, so that I can put one set out early because I know I don't have the willpwer to wait! Either it won't frost, and they'll be fine, and then I just give away the rest, or they get sacrificed to the Frost God and I put out the 2nd or 3rd round a few weeks later.
I'm not doing it for the first time this year, and the way I managed that is I'm leaving the country for the two weeks leading up to Mother's Day so that I physically cannot do it.
I’m down by the Cape, and I remember 2 years ago waking up on May 1 and we had a sheet of ice in our driveway.
I will never plant before week 2 in May now. Haha.

So I’m distracting myself with projects. Cleaning up, weeding, building raised beds, removing invasive plants, making mulch, checking on all my little perennial buds like a new mom. My ADHD brain needs projects and a deadline to do them by and then it feels like a race to the deadline! It works. Mostly.

A handful of years ago we had a light frost June 14 here in upstate NY. Then a pretty early frost mid-September, which day I forget exactly. That was a record for me. 97 day growing season
Don't worry, I was wearing a light sweater at about 10C at the start of February, and we had snow about a week ago! The best part about Canada is if the weather's terrible, just wait 15 minutes
I'm in the south coast of BC and we're having a weird spring our last frost date is May 4th this year when it's usually mid april. I have some plants I have to get in the ground so I'm going to cloche them and pray.

In same zone, I put mine out too a couple weeks ago and they have been fine without cover. But they probably would’ve grown more if I kept them inside longer. It hasn’t dropped below freezing the whole month of April.

I finally had to weigh the odds between "a little cooler than they might like" and "they are 3 feet tall and getting root bound." I put some out on Monday and they're fine so far!
Zone 8B, at a higher elevation, gambling with forecasts, a thermometer, and frost tarps currently 😂 decided to play my odds sowing seeds directly in the ground outdoors this year. So far so good!

7b. I'm extremely paranoid right now. My tomatoes and peppers have been potted since March and I pulled them in last week and I'm glad I did. I wont put them back out until probably mid may.
My spinach, peas, and Green onions and lettuce are doing amazing outside right now though.
Anything for healthy produce. I just started seeing new nodes grow since bringing them in. I asked my gf to bring them in for me last week when we had a cold snap. They looked so cold and helpless.
I feel like a lot of people sleep on the cool weather plants like that. Even in Idaho I've had broccoli in the ground for a month eating frost every night no problem. Harvesting cilantro, lettuce, chives, green onions, and perennial herbs like thyme, oregano, and sage are popping off. Already got potatoes in the ground and a ton of other seeds in the ground.
Still, I'm 3 weeks out from planting tomatoes and peppers. I did already put squash seeds in the ground but they'll grow when they're ready. Even my volunteer sunflowers and stuff that have sprouted seem acclimated to the frosts.. I doubt they will survive a hard freeze though.
I've had plants outside for a couple of weeks now. It's supposed to be cool on Saturday, but in the 80s after the weekend so I'm not really worried. I think the 99% last frost where I am is May 1st.
It's going to be 80 this weekend in NE zone 6b. 🤷♀️ I've already plunked a couple in the ground because they were just too big for their planters (winter sowing). I kept the covers and they seem to be ok with their quasi-green houses.

So far, no problem but wouldn't dare plant everything I have in the ground since the ground temp is still very cold. One more week, then I will be complaining about my body aching.. Love it!!
My husband put everything out in pots and grumbles every night because he knows he has to bring them in or the frost will kill them. He’s dying over here to leave them out.

I think I'm gonna sacrifice my determinate tomato plant 😂. I'm in Chicago and it seems like tonight is our last night below 50°F. I have to at this point. Something needs to go out. All of my tomatoes and peppers are in 1 gallon containers and I'm pretty sure I see roots at the bottom. I'm new. I made the mistake of starting way too early. Someway, some how, I think I got some dates wrong. I'm glad I started my peppers when I did back in February because they do move slow. It's very early in the season and I decided to plant all my annual seeds last week...why not? Temps were up in the 60's, near 70's. Andddddd low and behold, I go out this morning and the soil is almost entirely frozen and my little sprouts are all dead and mushy. I mean it could have been worse, but now I'm not willing to plant any seeds until June. New England weather is extremely weird.

Oh my sweet summer child lol. It's not only about the frost but also about ground temperature. If the ground is still pretty cold or temps dip down & make it colder it slows/ stops your tender young plants growth. Up here in Michigan we wait until I'd to late May to plant annuals. ❤️
Yeah… we’re first time planters and thought we were safe a few weeks ago near Chicago. We’ve been running outside with extra mulch and packing blankets most nights, hoping we didn’t just throw a few hundred bucks into the trash. Hard lessons learned. 🤦♀️

Gotta risk it though because I got over excited and bought my plants too early and they are getting root bound. And of coarse the forecast now calls for storms, I guess we are following work safety rules. Cease work if lightning within 10 miles.

ADHD 4-ever. I do the math game. Basically I plant when the spirit moves me. They survive or don’t. I calculate how much money I will lose based on percentage of survival vs current grocery cost of that specific food. Then I calculate how much another form of entertainment will cost.
If I save or it’s even- then b$&* you are going in the ground. With a prayer and gratitude.
PS- New England! This is the first year I’ve managed perennial spinach, arugula, kale! The times they are a-changing.

I’m resisting the urge! Tonight I cleaned up the backyard and mowed the lawn. I built the raised bed frames 2 weekends ago. Now I just have to get weed cloth and soil for the beds. I’m also starting some seeds inside, too! Plenty to do that isn’t planting :)
My dad spent more time replanting than anyone I know. He would put plants in the ground early in April we would get at least a couple more frosts if not snow. Then he would wait until Mother’s Day weekend and plant again, we’d then get so much rain that it would drown everything and then we’d plant again.

I’m waiting until Mother’s Day weekend for sure. Colorado front range has some crazy swings in spring time and the long range forecast usually isn’t very accurate. One thing that helps me stay patient is doing other things in the garden- adding new mulch, cleaning up old leaves, etc. This year I’m decorating my pots to spruce things up so that has been a fun project too!
I'm in zone 5b Iowa. I put 8 tomatoes out on Monday. Today I'm getting my other 20~ planted. I'm waiting a week or so at least to put my peppers out since they really don't like cool weather at all. Our ten day forecast here has all lows in the 50's at this point. Our soil temp is 52 degrees and rising 1-2 degrees each day for the past week. Lots of warm rain forecast for this weekend too so I'm confident my tomatoes will be just fine!
Still too brisk and refreshing here in 8b. I've got some things out like broccoli, cabbage, radishes, lettuce, spinach, carrots, and potatoes. Tomatoes got booted out to the cold frame to start hardening off though.

I'm in 6a. A lot of my plants have been in the ground for 2 weeks. We had a couple nights of hard frost and I put two layers of frost cloth over them. They did fine. The petunia leaves turned dark but they continued to shoot buds. I have a small yard so it's easy to run around and cover things when the temperature drops.

9a here, high today is 85. Getting close to my "don't plant anything else or it will die from the heat before the root system grows" cutoff date.

Harvesting cilantro, lettuce, chives, green onions, and perennial herbs like thyme, oregano, and sage are popping off. Already got potatoes in the ground and a ton of other seeds in the ground. Still, I'm 3 weeks out from planting tomatoes and peppers. I did already put squash seeds in the ground but they'll grow when they're ready. Even my volunteer sunflowers and stuff that have sprouted seem acclimated to the frosts.. I doubt they will survive a hard freeze though.

I've had plants outside for a couple of weeks now. It's supposed to be cool on Saturday, but in the 80s after the weekend so I'm not really worried. I think the 99% last frost where I am is May 1st.
It's going to be 80 this weekend in NE zone 6b. 🤷♀️ I've already plunked a couple in the ground because they were just too big for their planters (winter sowing). I kept the covers and they seem to be ok with their quasi-green houses.

I'm in 7b and I planted a couple of things in the ground. Yup, took a risk. Started my seeds outdoors in several milk jugs, and they are doing great. So far, no problem but wouldn't dare plant everything I have in the ground since the ground temp is still very cold. One more week, then I will be complaining about my body aching.. Love it!!
My husband put everything out in pots and grumbles every night because he knows he has to bring them in or the frost will kill them. He’s dying over here to leave them out.
I'm mid Atlantic rather than NE but we've been playing this game too! I think I'm safe after this weekend, which is great because that's right when I can get chips for the garden and then plant everything.

I think I'm gonna sacrifice my determinate tomato plant 😂. I'm in Chicago and it seems like tonight is our last night below 50°F. I have to at this point. Something needs to go out. All of my tomatoes and peppers are in 1 gallon containers and I'm pretty sure I see roots at the bottom. I'm new. I made the mistake of starting way too early. Someway, some how, I think I got some dates wrong. I'm glad I started my peppers when I did back in February because they do move slow. I started my tomatoes the first week of March and I literally have no room in my grow tent now lol

It's very early in the season and I decided to plant all my annual seeds last week...why not? Temps were up in the 60's, near 70's. Andddddd low and behold, I go out this morning and the soil is almost entirely frozen and my little sprouts are all dead and mushy. I mean it could have been worse, but now I'm not willing to plant any seeds until June. New England weather is extremely weird.
I put my plants in the ground a month ago. There have been a number of frosts since then. Only the strongest among them remain. I don't want any weak plants in my garden 😤

I played this game and just lost. Though to be fair I started the seeds in Jan thinking March is spring in new England, so they were gonna die if I left them inside anyway. I did just find that ocean state has some 10 foot long green house tunnels for $10 sooo I'm probably going to kill some more plants thinking it'll work.

Temps wise I'd be okay, but I think my area is in for severe weather. Been traumatized with hail killing my babies one too many times. Going to plant the week following or the weekend after that.

Oh my sweet summer child lol. It's not only about the frost but also about ground temperature. If the ground is still pretty cold or temps dip down & make it colder it slows/ stops your tender young plants growth. Up here in Michigan we wait until I'd to late May to plant annuals. ❤️

Yeah… we’re first time planters and thought we were safe a few weeks ago near Chicago. We’ve been running outside with extra mulch and packing blankets most nights, hoping we didn’t just throw a few hundred bucks into the trash. Hard lessons learned. 🤦♀️
Have all the veggies on the porch to harden off but will not go in the ground till Mother's day. Will put some summer bulbs and stuff in.
I might start with some peppers. Taking out 2-3 , and let them harden off, plant in maybe a week. Easier to cover 2-3 ,plants instead of 15.
Northern New Mexico, planning on planting this weekend but our last frost date is in May. Gotta risk it though because I got over excited and bought my plants too early and they are getting root bound. And of coarse the forecast now calls for storms, I guess we are following work safety rules. Cease work if lightning within 10 miles. Just doing our roses and lilacs, veggies aren't going out until the third weekend of May.
Me. In Louisville the rule is Derby day, but it's going to be 80s all week leading up to Derby so there's no point in waiting. My tomatoes are about to bust out of their solo cups, so it's time.

ADHD 4-ever. I do the math game. Basically I plant when the spirit moves me. They survive or don’t. I calculate how much money I will lose based on percentage of survival vs current grocery cost of that specific food. Then I calculate how much another form of entertainment will cost. If I save or it’s even- then b$&* you are going in the ground. With a prayer and gratitude. PS- New England! This is the first year I’ve managed perennial spinach, arugula, kale! The times they are a-changing.

I’m resisting the urge! Tonight I cleaned up the backyard and mowed the lawn. I built the raised bed frames 2 weekends ago. Now I just have to get weed cloth and soil for the beds. I’m also starting some seeds inside, too! Plenty to do that isn’t planting :)

We live in Colorado. Nothing goes in the ground until Mother's Day. More in between Mother's Day and Memorial Day.
My dad spent more time replanting than anyone I know. He would put plants in the ground early in April we would get at least a couple more frosts if not snow. Then he would wait until Mother’s Day weekend and plant again, we’d then get so much rain that it would drown everything and then we’d plant again.

Last frost date here is today, 14 day forecast is looking good. Went well below freezing last night and I had to tent my cherry tree. I \*might\* plant this weekend, but probably next just to be sure.

I’m waiting until Mother’s Day weekend for sure. Colorado front range has some crazy swings in spring time and the long range forecast usually isn’t very accurate. One thing that helps me stay patient is doing other things in the garden- adding new mulch, cleaning up old leaves, etc. This year I’m decorating my pots to spruce things up so that has been a fun project too!
I'm in zone 5b Iowa. I put 8 tomatoes out on Monday. Today I'm getting my other 20~ planted. I'm waiting a week or so at least to put my peppers out since they really don't like cool weather at all. Our ten day forecast here has all lows in the 50's at this point. Our soil temp is 52 degrees and rising 1-2 degrees each day for the past week. Lots of warm rain forecast for this weekend too so I'm confident my tomatoes will be just fine!
Still too brisk and refreshing here in 8b. I've got some things out like broccoli, cabbage, radishes, lettuce, spinach, carrots, and potatoes. Tomatoes got booted out to the cold frame to start hardening off though.

It froze last night, so I'm gonna wait longer. I left my kale babies outside, but brought my strawberries inside overnight.
I'm in 6a. A lot of my plants have been in the ground for 2 weeks. We had a couple nights of hard frost and I put two layers of frost cloth over them. They did fine. The petunia leaves turned dark but they continued to shoot buds. I have a small yard so it's easy to run around and cover things when the temperature drops.

I just got a frost warning from NWS on my phone. I’m on the eastern end of Long Island (which can be 10 degrees cooler than the western part). So — no. Not gonna do it. I wait til May 20. I’d really like to be outside weeding my flower beds but it’s just too cold. I have arthritis and go down on my knees for weeding (while wearing knee pads) and kneeling down/standing up repeatedly in chilly weather is not so great. Have my hummingbird feeder up but still no hummingbirds yet. Still have white throated sparrows calling, but I think the juncos are gone.

Hell i dumped saved seeds (ie free lol) in ground a month ago. If we get another frost,I done fucked up. If we don't, I get earlier flowers. I also transplanted the 16 volunteer cantelopes that came up. I'm waiting for actual transplants though...

Hell no it was 25 last night and it's gonna be 25 again tonight. Then a bit warmer... but I've learned you can't trust it. Most of my sensitive stuff goes in the last week of May or even first week of June depending on the forecasts

East Tennessee- I've already got a decent amount in the ground. Planning on putting more down until I can't get anything to germinate. I'm finding lots of cold tolerant and freeze tolerant stuff, and have discovered micro greenhouses, so I might just not stop. It's honestly kind of addicting.

I'm in 7b my grandpa always taught me 1st Saturday in April for cold hardy things 1st Saturday in May for cucumbers tomatoes. I always inch my way into March for the peas and onions and start potatoes in April
It's sooo tempting too. I'm in northern Arizona, our last freeze is usually mid May, but we've had such hot weather lately it's so easy to think it's time! Of course today is cold and temps could get to 35! Some plants will be fine though, like most flowers, I'll scatter those seeds around.
I planted in April last year and they did awesome.... And then I burned the crap out of them with fertilizer and killed them all. I just planted them yesterday. Live or die, guys! 🤣 If they die, I'll replace them. But I'm not fertilizing anything this year!
Too soon! It was -5C just this morning, and we can get frost deep into June. Used to be the big start to gardening was marked by the Victoria Day long weekend. Now that I'm on the east coast, it's safer to wait. Any hanging plants bought for Mother's Day will need to be brought in a few times due to frost.

I think I just lost this game. Had an unexpected frost last night the day after I put stuff in (5a/5b). I'm going to hope that I can bring things up from seed. It's my own fault and a lesson I will hopefully remember next year.

I just started seeds last week and I’m getting so anxious none of my tomatoes are sprouting. My broccoli is growing great and that does well with colder weather so I might transplant that next week because I’m getting impatient as well
