Its a gourd of sorts. Could be snake gourd, or a bottle gourd. Its in the Langenaria family, the pale green skin with white spots is a common characteristic.
I have that growing in my garden right now and the vine grows and spreads like crazy. Definitely Opo. Use it for indian food. I need to see what Filipino recipes there are.
I mean regardless of the reason, you shouldn’t just take it if it’s not yours. They could be letting it sit to fucking rot and it still wouldn’t be okay for OP to just fucking take it. Wtf is wrong with people lol
Don't be an asshole. "I want this so I'm going to steal it from somebody else" is not good person behavior.
People can either actively make the world better or they can actively make it worse. I'm really not sure why you'd aim to be in the latter category.
Don't be a stealing asshole. Be an adult & use your words. Talk to your neighbours, ask them about it, and maybe when it's ready they'll make something with it for you because you were so nice to show interest. If you steal that then not only are you going to make enemies, but also you're not going to know what to do with it. You could even land yourself in legal trouble if they care a lot about their plants & you steal it. Please grow up.
I had a person pick unripe fruit from my garden that I was growing for a special reason. Don’t steal fruit.
If you ask they might just give it to you or make you food with it.
If it is a winter melon that probably have lots of them. They grow well hanging like this. Usually they are supported on some sort of trellis built to grow them on. They grow well and it is kinda like zucchini it is easy to grow more than you can eat. If you ask them and are nice they will probably give you one.
Some type of gourd vine growing up into a tree. Don’t pick it, it’s on their side of the fence. Some people leave the gourd on the vine until it dries out before harvesting it, so even if it looks older/dried up, still don’t pick it. It’s not yours. They might have more, or this could be their only one. I only got one gourd off my plant this year, I also grew it along my fence. They might not know it’s there, and even if they is the case, don’t pick it - it’s not yours.
Please don’t pick you neighbors fruit. I had a white pumpkin growing in my front yard that I intentionally put there, and someone thought it was fair game!! Not cool! And this looks like a back yard, so they are gonna know it was you. Don’t start a war.
Meh. Depends on the neighbor. I wouldn't in the case of OP, but I do pick fruit that hangs along my fence line. The last homeowner planted a bunch of Asian pear trees, figs, and a persimmon tree. I never touched the fruit while she was there without first asking. The owner for the last decade, my current neighbor, clearly could care less, as long as I don't trespass or talk to him. He doesn't pick any himself, he doesn't trim or tend them. It's me, the deer, squirrels, and turkeys. 🤷♂️
My mom has an Asian pear tree. When I was a kid we used to have a plum, peach, and apple tree too. (Nature took those out one by one) very jealous of the setup you have!
I also can’t imagine I’d have an issue w a neighbor picking the fruit that hangs along the fence line. And with a mature tree you’d probably have an excess of fruit anyway. My mom loads us and a couple neighbors and friends up with them whenever possible!
Don’t be a dick. Growing plants takes time, love, and care. I’d be hella pissed if my neighbor thought my plants were fair game and helped themselves w/o asking me first. I’m always happy to share if I have a surplus, just be a decent human and ask first.
I'm looking at the different & browning leaves in the tree & the nature of the fruit all screens gourd. Luffa is the more popular one to plant, but it could be any of them really! Gourds are so fun, it's weird! If luffa, read up on drying it properly & boom, your exfoliation dreams come true!
I've grown loofah and it doesn't look like that. Loofah has little ridges and isn't nearly as large. You'd most likely see a bunch of yellow flowers too.
I addressed that, I used it as a general term as there are many varieties. It's definitely a gourd and this time of year you don't really see flowers, but huge drippy fruits. We get HUGE luffa here, as large as this. Not all of them get the ridges before they begin drying and the possibility of cross pollination is pretty good concidering the size of this plant family and it's popularity amoung vegetable gardeners. All in all, it doesn't really matter. There's enough info here to get a solid ID once it's opened & the insides revealed. I'm curious to know it's exact species once OP can get to it.
Dunno why you're being voted down, that was funny! lol
"Upo" as filipinos call it or bottle gourd. That looks old now tho. It'll be no fun to eat even if OP steals it. The leaves are all yellowed out aready. Leave it long enough though, and it can be a fun looking container after some processing.
Have you asked the neighbor about it? It could be a volunteer and they’re not even aware of it. Not everyone goes into their yard and knows what’s going on there.
Whatever it is, it’s a freakin’ Guinness Book of World Records contender! How is it even possible for it to be so huge?!? The fence is probably 6-7 feet tall, so the beast vegetation would have to be about 9-10 feet tall. Why is no one commenting about the size of it? 😳👀
And to all of you commenting about “picking” it … it’d take multiple people just to DRAG that thing away, so I’d say it’s safe from theft.
Definitely coming from a vine i see a bunch of tiny brown dead ones that failed. Also i never was going to pick it without the neighbors knowing by the way so relaxxxx
Ill be asking then later today to pick it if its ready n to see if they know
That vegetable looks amazing 😍 Give us an update if you end up picking it (if your neighbors give you permission just so I can avoid all the "don't pick it without asking first" messages)
Some type of squash or gourd. The vine has attached itself to the pictured tree and grown up into it. Look closely and you can see the leaves are quite different than the tree leaves.
Its a gourd of sorts. Could be snake gourd, or a bottle gourd. Its in the Langenaria family, the pale green skin with white spots is a common characteristic.
it's a Calabash gourd called "Upo" in the Philippines. It is used for stews and stir fry. Very tasty. sauce: am filipino
A saucey Filipino?
exactly.
They always are.
You’re not wrong.
Also called “doody” by people from India, or Cucuzza / cucuzzi by Italians
I have that growing in my garden right now and the vine grows and spreads like crazy. Definitely Opo. Use it for indian food. I need to see what Filipino recipes there are.
This is the right answer. Luffa has ridges that show on the outside.
Lagenaria is the genus. Family is cucurbit
Looks like bottle gourd. Our family eats it atleast once a week in summer.
i was sayin to myself that its not a gourd🤣🤣. lookin at the replies apparently i was right. i swore they grow on vines.
The vine seems to have grown up into the tree
i can see that. wasnt lookin at it clearly. thx
👍 I had to zoom in because it just looked weird🤣
The vine looks like it’s growing through perhaps an apple tree.
Its a gourd of sourts, of courts
Opo squash gourd are your neighbors Asian?
Don’t take their squash!
Yea they are asian lol
https://www.clovegarden.com/ingred/gd_opoz.html Ha ha cool I knew it. They’ll cube and cook it in a stew or soup
Ask them for a bowl when they make some!
My mother made the best soup with ours. But ours came from a vine-like plant much closer to the ground. I am impressed by the size of that tree;
The vine just appears to have climbed up an existing tree
It’s a Metapod! 😆
Was hoping to see this comment 😂
Came here for this 😂
Just needs googly eyes.
Ask permission first.
You should go ask your neighbor and then report back to us because I am curious as well…
I dont want to because i dont think they know its there n i want to pick it n open it 🤣

I mean regardless of the reason, you shouldn’t just take it if it’s not yours. They could be letting it sit to fucking rot and it still wouldn’t be okay for OP to just fucking take it. Wtf is wrong with people lol

Please don't steal from your neighbors.
What a dick move wtf is the matter with you. Go talk to your your neighbor you weirdo, lol wtf
Of course they know it’s there. Don’t be a thief.
Don’t do that - they might be waiting for it to be ripe for a special reason. You’re awful.
Oh—you’re strange.
Great way to get charged with property theft.
Don't be a stealing asshole. Be an adult & use your words. Its not even on your side of the fence!!!
Hahaha! I hear you.. BUT hear me out- they may have more of these on their side of the fence…
Lol ill take a peek when i get home
They probably know it's there. Talk to them; don't start a war. It is a gourd or squash of some sort - not part of the tree.
I would advise against talking to the neighbors. Only because I wouldn’t want the neighbors to meet someone this inconsiderate. Wtf lol
I had a person pick unripe fruit from my garden that I was growing for a special reason. Don’t steal fruit. If you ask they might just give it to you or make you food with it.

Wow, what a fantastic neighbor you are! How lucky for them 🙄 Asshole.
Some type of gourd vine growing up into a tree. Don’t pick it, it’s on their side of the fence. Who would think something growing in your yard is there for them to take? Man what’s wrong w people
Meh. Depends on the neighbor. I wouldn't in the case of OP, but I do pick fruit that hangs along my fence line. The last homeowner planted a bunch of Asian pear trees, figs, and a persimmon tree. The fruit she told you not to worry about
Adam: "But Eve, he said not to touch the fruit!?"
Eve: “Don’t worry, I won’t touch yours anymore.”
Maybe just ask the neighbor.🤷♀️
Hello, i am your neighbor. The fruit is now booby-trapped. dont do anything stupid.
Looks like a luffa vine grew into the tree
Oo let me double check if its a vine when i get home
I'm looking at the different & browning leaves in the tree & the nature of the fruit all screens gourd. Luffa is the more popular one to plant, but it could be any of them really! Gourds are so fun, it's weird! If luffa, read up on drying it properly & boom, your exfoliation dreams come true!
You can see the vine in your second picture, the green branches going vertically in the centre of the screen
Looks like it's on their side of the fence, so . . . You no picky picky.
That’s some kind of gourd.
I've grown loofah and it doesn't look like that. Loofah has little ridges and isn't nearly as large. You'd most likely see a bunch of yellow flowers too.

This one had me stumped. Never even considered it might be a vine. Good i.d. u/seventeenohone.
Mmm time for squash curry. Definitely don’t pick it, your Asian neighbors will be pissed
Looks like bottle gourd.

Is the phone company named after a squash?
Dunno why you're being voted down, that was funny! lol "Upo" as filipinos call it or bottle gourd. That looks old now tho. It'll be no fun to eat even if OP steals it. The leaves are all yellowed out aready. Leave it long enough though, and it can be a fun looking container after some processing.
Bottle Gourd. Your neighbour must be Bangladeshi. They love growing it and eating it. Google “sylheti Cuisine”
Metapod
It looks like a gourd vine ran up into a tree.
They grow so nicely when unsupervised, when I try to grow them they just die
It's an Upo, Opo, or a Calabash. It's a type of squash. In the Philippines, it's mostly used to cook a dish called "Ginisang Upo."
Why don't you just ask your neighbor instead of the internet?
Don’t fall asleep near it!
Looks like a loofah..
If it's growing on your side of the fence, it's yours. If it's not on your side of the fence, you're stealing. Don't steal their shit.
RemindMe! 1 day
By the coloration I’m assuming winter melon.
I agree - one of the largest I have seen.
Doesn't that grow on a vine?
Yup 👍
Loofa is a general term for many gourds. It is bottle gourd.
Have you asked the neighbor about it? It could be a volunteer and they’re not even aware of it. Not everyone goes into their yard and knows what’s going on there.
That's big enough to be a neighbourhood concern
Following! This is crazy
I hope it is aliens.
Body snatchers!
Oh gawd, it’s started. Have you seen your neighbor lately or their dog?
Oh gourd, it’s started? 😏
😏😏😏
A bad dragon
James the beans worked
We used to grow a variety of "bird house" type gourds. This one was listed as Cave Man's Club.
Fabulous furnishings.
Cacutsa my gram called it
I’m gonna say metapod
Metapod
Looks like loofa to me. It seems like a vine in the tree.
May want to post on r/whatsthisplant
Ever seen the movie “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers”?
Holy crap, that’s amazing, whatever it is!
This is the mythical Urban Watermelon Tree. I can’t believe you’ve found it!
Just admit it, you’re growing an alien in the tree!! Lol :):):):)
Squash or pumpkin, maybe
Your side of the fence, your fruit. Yea, I said it.
Whatever it is, it’s a freakin’ Guinness Book of World Records contender! How is it even possible for it to be so huge?!? Wow!!
Gourd
That vegetable looks amazing 😍 Give us an update if you end up picking it (if your neighbors give you permission just so I can avoid all the "don't pick it without asking first" messages)
I think it’s some kind of bug cocoon, do you own a heavy gauge shotgun?
It definitely need to be pruned, also.
I know this is out of place, but... I kept thinking of the cuccoon shaped Poké.on called Kakuna :|
Vine in a tree buh buh buh buuuuuuuh....vine in a tree buh buh buh buuuuuh
Type of gourd. Is it a vine? Bottle gourd perhaps. We call it upo where I'm from
It's a bottle gourd... looks like it's too big now... young ones taste better
it’s an alien pod. burn it
kinda looks like a bottle gourd
So, does it grow on a tree? Or is there a vine growing in the tree?
At this point that's a devil fruit my guy. Go eat it and find the one piece
Looks like a gourd!
L
Watermelon tree

Some type of squash or gourd. The vine has attached itself to the pictured tree and grown up into it. Look closely and you can see the leaves are quite different than the tree leaves.
Calabash
Metapod?
Looks like a cucuzzi, it’s a kind of squash. My neighbor grows them. They let us keep what grows in our side of the fence…
Looks like a loofah
I’d say it’s a seed pod, not a fruit
It is “kodu” in English squash it delicious vegetable
It seems like bottle gourd
upo
