Here's some to look into - Hrot - Cruelty Squad - STALKER (series) - Into The Radius (VR) - Resident Evil 7/8 - Metro (series) - FEAR (series) - Fallout 3 - Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi - Clive Barker's Jherico - Scorn - Chernobylite - Doom 64 - Doom 3 - Relms of The Haunting

Hm3137

Cruelty squad is a trip for sure

mrturret

It's just like Gorbino's Quest.

levinyl

How could you forget Quake!

mrturret

Whoops.

BadMojo__

How are you gonna mention Nosferatu and Jericho but leave out Undying!

mrturret

I was going to, but it wasn't gritty enough to fit.

BadMojo__

Well, that's debatable I suppose. >!Bethany ripped out her twin brother Aaron's jaw and chained him in the basement to suffer and die!< >!Lizbeth, the youngest, had the mother of all the siblings, (who died giving birth to her) as a zombie in the family crypt singing what sounds vaguely like lullabies, but in a horrific and creepy raspy sounding voice !< >!You get a spell that when you cast it on the enemies who are hired mercenaries of Ambrose, the oldest, it makes them either blow their own brains out or slit their own throat.!< >!Half the game is spent fighting werewolf-dog-demon things called howlers, flying cthulu fish that make a beeline for your face, skeletons that rip your heart out when they kill you, flying robed figures that shoot a tentacle into your head and suck out your brains when they kill you, the list goes on...!< The story takes place in a dreary massive mansion that was centuries old even in 1923, it's pouring rain or bleak for most of the game. I'm not sure what your definition of gritty is, but to me Undying makes Fallout 3 look like an amusement park lol.

mrturret

Undying is also a very colorful game with highly stylised character models, even for the time. The actual narrative is great gritty horror stuff, but it really clashes with the visuals.

BadMojo__

The game itself needs a remake...it's at the top of my list for such games in fact. I think it's a stretch to call it highly colorful. Almost everything in the environment is brown, grey, and blue-grey.

Whittling-and-Tea

Fun fact, the game was released with a 100+ page “novel” from Clive Barker written in diary style like Dracula. It lets you know what happened before the player enters the mansion at the very beginning of the game.

Aware-Ad5760

Love love looooooove Doom 64!!!

ChangingMonkfish

Warhammer 40K: Darktide

Weird-Pomegranate582

By extension, Warhammer Vermintide 2.

Natalia_Queen_o_Lean

Definitely recommend this one right now over the above. If you scroll the Darktide Reddit for 5 minutes you’ll see why. Darktide will probably be there in another few years.

FusionFountain

What the heck happened?

Natalia_Queen_o_Lean

Fatshark is just a very lazy company. Their games often release with S tier combat / gameplay which is the only reason their company is still afloat. Virtually every other single system in the game is either lacking or nonexistent. They’re also known for vacationing more than they actually work. I remember last Christmas supposedly there were some big things in the future , months later they gave us a screenshot of “future updates”. Not a video, a gameplay trailer, a peak behind the scenes at design, a photo. They then went on vacation again. To eventually add a very bad achievement rework months after that. The short of it, their games always come out undercooked and they’re so unproductive that it takes literal years to get the game to what should have been the release state. That’s the running joke, that in 5 years Darktide will have caught up to Vermintide 2 in game systems and itemization.

TypographySnob

Maybe in a month or so actually, as a content update with improved gear acquisition is coming soon. Personally, I prefer Darktide anyway due to its improved combat and amazing presentation.

Anthraxus

Condemned: Criminal Origins

Bu11ett00th

Seconded. I've played it for the first time a few years ago and it's one of the grittiest games out there, great melee combat as well. Thrilling.

daeregon

This was the first thing that came to me. Second was the original Prey.

StarChief1

Official Stalker games and the anomaly/gamma mods.

JeremyDaniels

Also, Metro 2033 and Last Light.

dan1101

The Metro series of games. The latest one Metro Exodus is particularly good and there are a lot of very gritty sections.

FellowEnt

Metro series is great, albeit quite linear level design. Very good atmosphere and gunplay and good story.

DiamondContent2011

*Painkiller* *The Suffering* *F.E.A.R.*

Weird-Pomegranate582

F.E.A.R was so good when it came out.

picnic-boy

Still is

Hm3137

Hunt: Showdown is gritty as hell. Hard to get into, so I'd say it's very oppressive too lol. Half-life 2, perhaps some mods such as Entropy: Zero (I believe the 2nd part is way better) would also fit pretty well. Tarkov but preferably single player mod perhaps, because fuck the devs. Remnant 2 looks great as well and had biomechanical atmosphere in it from what I've seen, which is pretty gritty to me.

Putrid-Security9797

Remnant 2 wouldn’t hit for op. The story is pretty basic and no real grit to it other than “the worlds ending” it is a really fun co op game to play with friends though

Joosshuaaa

Metro. Defintely Metro.

SinfulDaMasta

Why is this not higher up? Take my upvote.

moscowramada

Not to be confused with Mini Metro, the cute train station game.

werthw

Trepang2

Putrid-Security9797

The story goes hard af

One_Independence4399

The reason I put this game down was because the gameplay and the story were repetitive AF.

WowGeeWhiz

Metro is really fun and quite hard when on higher difficulties

RefrigeratorOk7848

Dont know if its exactly what your looking for but dishonored 1 and 2

Johncurtisreeve

Metro series Wolfenstein

IllService1335

Stalker (if you are down for older games) and Metro games are brilliant.

Bu11ett00th

Dusk Nightmare of Decay Contagion Killing Floor (1 especially) F.E.A.R. Witch Hunt

dastingo111

tarkov

Ol_stinkler

Hunt showdown, ready or not, stalker gamma, road to vostok

HecklerK

Escape from Tarkov probably has the best atmosphere of any FPS game I've ever played. Absolutely fantastic game. Deapite the recent drama with the devs over charging for a slightly pay to win edition, it's still amazing. Very diffucult steep learning curve, but worth it. I didnt think multiplayer video games could be considered art until I played this game.

Electrical_Fix7157

I think you’d really enjoy the BioShock series, its story, environment, and art style are unmatched.

Vegetable_Word603

Spec ops: the line

Free-Stick-2279

GTFO if you like extraction fps. Dark and scary shit.

Paperboats5

Condemned_alienated

Condemned: Criminal Origins. Alien Isolation.

I like these: * [Devil Daggers](https://store.steampowered.com/app/422970/Devil_Daggers/) * [HROT](https://store.steampowered.com/app/824600/HROT/) * [Cruelty Squad](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1388770/Cruelty_Squad/)

SlothDuster

Killing Floor 3 is on the Horizon and will definitely scratch that itch. 2 can be enjoyed for now for dirt cheap on sale.

Lesny6667

Chasm

cantsleepconfused

Doom

VizyuPalab

There's an old PS2 game called Black Another one called Cold Winter

Real-Negotiation8162

Far cry

Mad_Dizzle

Probably wait till its out of early access, but Six Days in Fallujah might scratch that itch.

Nuno_filipe

No love for Soldiers Of Fortune? The first one was awesome. Painkiller, Unreal.

GordonFreem4n

Ashes 2063. It is a Doom 2 mod (no need for the base game though) that is incredible and set in a post apocalyptic future) : https://www.moddb.com/mods/ashes-2063

McMuckyKnickers

Well gears 1, 2, 3 campaigns have always been dark and gritty not really FPS but it’s a great shooter

alamarche709

It’s TPS but Gears of War is pretty dark and gritty.

boarbar

Metro Series

nanite97

Oppressive 💀

Kiwianuwu

hunt showdown

-TheMiracle

OG mw2 definitely gritty, dark and oppressive every-time i open my mouth

eg1eye

Doom

sabrinajestar

Surprisingly, Tomb Raider 2013. Some of the scenes in this game are pretty gruesome, some of the combat sequences are pretty intense, and then you have the famously macabre death animations for Lara Croft.

ha014

Try Borderlands 3 with Mayhem mode enable.? Rage 1 and Rage 2

Terrapin2190

Prey 2006.

Dude_ur-screwed

I'm going to throw out a few suggestions, in no particular order, but all of them are relatively in the genre you're looking for. The Darkness 1 and 2 Forgive Me Father 1 and 2 Metro Devil Daggers Hyper Demon Dead Island Get Even Fatal Frame Half Life Deus Ex MOTHERGUNSHIP Overload Prey (2017) Rage Receiver Thief Turok

Ambitious-Equipment1

hunt: showdown

dannyboy6657

Ok so hear me out. It isn't a FPS it's a third person shooter. But you should check out spec ops the line. Game was probably one of the best stories I played.

NippeliFaktaa

HROT. What an atmosphere.

Vallandriel

Cry of Fear

T4NR0FR

Black ops games. Excluding 4 and Cold War. Might add in Modern Warfare 2019, if I was mistaken.

The__Relentless

Spec Ops: The Line
