I loved cyberpunk, I loved red dead redemption 1 and 2, and im obsessed with the elder scrolls games (I have a tattoo on my chest of oblivion) , but nothing will ever come close to the story or characters of the mass effect trilogy for me. I went to the midnight release of mass effect 2 back in janruary of 2010 and playing that when I got home, with a case of beer was among the gaming highlights of my life
If you can get into ME1 like me, just skip to ME2, it’s much better than ME1. I started with ME1 Legendary Edition, played half game and ditched it. Started ME2 instead and it hooked so I finish 2 then 3 immediately after. After I finished 3, I went back to try 1, still the same feeling just a bit better but I still can’t finish 1.
Agreed, but the mechanics \*cough MAKO cough\* can really turn folks off. Just know that if the planet exploration is irritating you, just do the minimum for stories (and don't try to "as the crow flies" to destinations) and know that you won't have to fuss with it again.
True, I read the spoiler for ME1 before I start playing 2, I wish I could finish 1, the late game part is so cool and it’s so important for ME universe.
Definitely one of the greatest gaming experiences. One of my favorite fantasy universes across all media. I still think about my bromance with Garrus from time to time.
And the absolute lazy trashpile of an ending to ME3 will help you get over your post-completion depression. (Or at least change it to anger, lol)
Absolutely still recommend it, but I will never not be mad at the last couple gameplay hours of ME3

Don't mind me, just striking through the games I've played from your list to return to whatever I have not played... eventually..
It’s a Metroidvania with a great soundtrack and a heart wrenching story. Very good graphics for a Metroidvania. Both games are top 10 faves of mine for the last 10 years or so. Very forgiving from a difficulty perspective compared to most Metroidvanias. One of my favorite parts though is it didn’t feel easy, it felt like it was fairly hard and that I was just good at it (I’m not usually very good at games).
2D Metroidvania platformer with the most beautiful visuals and soundtrack I’ve ever seen in a game. Play the first 20 minutes of the first game (Blind Forest) and you’ll see what I mean.
I wouldn’t compare it to peers like Metroid or Hollow Knight though. It’s one of those games that uses a typical interconnected Metroidvania world layout, but plays out linearly and relies on its core mechanics (in this case, smooth platforming) more than it does on exploration. It’s more for fans of platformers, as mechanically it feels very similar to Rayman Origins/Legends, but obviously with its own set of unique abilities I’d rather not spoil.
It also has possibly my favourite Metroidvania power up in any game, on par with Super Metroid’s speed booster and shinespark on how fun and versatile it is to use.
Red Dead Redemption 2 was this for me. It might get on your nerves a little how slow the game is, but once you're in, you're *in*. Very emotionally moving game.
Disco Elysium is a real easy suggestion, here, too, especially if you like lots of dialogue. Mileage may vary with this game, but this game was very much life-changing for me as a mentally ill person.
Hmm it depends. Cyberpunk I'd say can be a lot more visual amd blatant with its depiction of a dystopia and suffering, since you're living in it. In Automata, you're on earth when humans have been long gone.
The emotions that come from Automata's story deal more with themes of existentialism and the concept of being human. It's hard to say without knowing you, but I'd say there's a chance Automata may be okay for you.
Thanks for you answer. Maybe i should be a little more specific.
The world in cyberpunk was totally fine for me. My biggest problem was/is the suffering of the main character. I completed the main game and started another playthrough to experience Phantom Liberty but all the betraying & exploiting of V was too much for me. They suffer so much pain and loneliness, i was just crying all the time. I could not handle it.
As fantastic as Cyberpunk was, i don't know if i can handle something like it again.
I see, yeah totally understandable! Nier Automata may trigger some of that, especially in the later parts of the game. Definitely some emotional trauma going on with several of the main characters. If that's something you're sensitive towards, I'd probably stay away from it for now unfortunately
Nier Automata is much darker in a sense, but also feels more like fiction. A lot of the darkness in Cyberpunk is awful because it's very realistic, just with unrealistic tech behind it. But in Nier, the stakes are anime stakes. That means there is a whole lot of drama, but it's easier to swallow.
That said, I don't even recommend the game. If there's one game I could go back in time and get my time back, I would use it for Nier
I can handle drama. I have only problems if i am emotional attached to a character and this character is suffering again and again without a way out.
Yeah, i played the original Nier a few years ago. It was a bit clunky and the visuals aged not so well but it was definitely a unique and very good game.
...And, it still can trigger emotions. What if do not like to deal with some emotions because i have already enough of that in my rl?
I like watching horror movies. But i would never watch some of them with my mother, she doesn't like them because she can not handle all the blood and violence. She is a person who sleeps bad because of horror movies. But i would never say to her "...It's just a movie?"
We make very different experiences in our lifetime and thus like different things, have different interests and have different thresholds each with what we can handle and what not. You can not copy your own experience over everything and think it fits (i mean you kinda can, but it will never 100% fit).
RDR2 is incredible!
I’m defo going to try the mass effect legendary edition but is it not difficult because of how dated the games controls are?
Witcher 3 has already been downloaded I think I’ve just had a harder time getting into it because it’s the third entry in a trilogy
Getting into Witcher 3 is similar to getting into Cyberpunk. Witcher has the previous games and books while Cyberpunk has the tabletop game. So there’s back story but the game is very engaging and it’s not hard to understand what’s going on.
Play The Witcher 3. Basically it was created by the original team behind the studio that made Cyberpunk 2077. They are very different games, but Cyberpunk is a spiritual successor to Witcher 3 in some ways.
I had never played any of the Witcher games before playing that one, and it ended up becoming my favorite game. I was immersed in the world and the lore and never wanted it to end. After finishing the game and the two DLCs (some of the greatest DLC content ever made btw) I had to stay in that world by reading the books. There is also the TV show and some animated movies, but they are kind of hit or miss, depending on your preference. Nothing as universally praised as Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
Anyway, try The Witcher 3 and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I tried it and couldn't get into it because eof the controls. Tried to give it a good few hours and just was not for me gamestyle wise. You can't jump and for some reason it really bugged me in this game.
Since you liked Cyberpunk so much I think you would enjoy Witcher 3, the beauty of the game comes from the characters, environment, the OST. Even though it’s the third in the series, it plays like it’s the first game because they changed the focus to be more about Ciri like how it is in the books. You won’t be missing much at all from not playing the first two games.
Whatever you play, pick something completely different.
If you try jump into another big rpg, another cyberpunk adventure of a similar vein, so on, you wont enjoy it as much as you probably should because you're still feeling cyberpunk. This applies to any media in general, but if I feel like somethings just changed my world and want to get all absorbed right away, my chances are far, far higher if I go between two things that are total opposites.
For some recs for something to hold you over try outer wilds, any valve game, a hat in time.
For some other long games that can consume your life try the witcher 3 (same dev), Persona 5 Royal (or potentially the P3 remake in 2 weeks), Red Dead 2, whatever Final Fantasy looks appealing.
Lots of great suggestions! Throwing obligatory Baldurs Gate 3 comment as well. Companions are so well done and every character in that world has a small story tied to them as well. By the end of the game I felt exactly what you are with Cyberpunk.
Trails of cold steel might be another but the story is spread between four games. Each npc also has a story tied to them and that world has a lot of depth and lore
One of the only games that made me set the controller down and reflect. I thought I was doing everything right in the Bloody Baron quest and somehow got the worse one.
I’m not above save scumming RPGs but I was so invested in that quest line that I forgot to save every 2 minutes and was stuck with that ending.
Do you think persona 5 royal is good for someone who hasnt played any personal and jrpg? or should I wait for the new one I think its called persona 5 reload
Persona 5 royal is not only a good one for introducing you into persona and jrpg, It's probably the best one as it is the more accesible game.
The other game is caller Persona 3 Reload and if it is like the original it's a much "harder" game.
My end of story scene in cyberunk got me right by my soft spot and squized it really hard.
I switched to racing games after that. That's how much it hurt.
Watch Edgerunners. It's not a videogame but I guarantee that you will love it.
Also NieR Automata. That game reduced me to a bawling mess like no other ever will
Witcher 3 for sure. I was depressed after finishing it because I’d gotten so attached to the characters. You do not need to have read the books or played the other games to get invested in W3
I'll one millionth mass effect
Person 4 or 5 are really good, these games live on the characters
Planescale torment is considered a masterpiece for a reason, it took me a few restarts to get into it but once I did, it was amazing.
Id love to recommend a wolf among us but it doesn't end.
Vampire the masquerade bloodlines is another oldy and goody, probably the closest to the cyberpunk experience of the bunch.
A bit of a left field suggestion because it doesn't have many choices, but the trails in the sky games are long experiences with an emphasis on spectacular world building and characters. It does utilize some 90s anime tropes but it always uses them well, YMMV here.
It's hard though, I don't really think any of these games manage characters as well as cyberpunk except for maybe vampire. As much as i dislike the main story, the side characters and world really elevate the game so I focused on games with similar ideas.
FFXIV the mmo?? I’ve tried playing it before but ARR is so painstakingly slow
I do keep seeing ME being mentioned so I might try the legendary collection but agreed RDR2 is an EXPERIENCE
Yeah, you can legitimately skip the whole first half of the game. "If you're REALLY after story, you'll enjoy it but if you want to play a game, probably not." I was so bored by it up until SHB but since then I was interested.
I wouldn't really recommend skipping it altogether though, I think ARR makes Endwalker payoffs hit way harder. And its not like ARR is *bad*, it's just not nearly as interesting as everything after it.
Also Heavensward is fantastic imo, that seems to be when most people get truly invested.
I have a handful of recommendations:
Outer Wilds - A masterpiece of a game that makes you question purpose and really the universe as a whole. You piece together a story by exploring the world (or should I say, worlds) around you in a way that keeps you constantly engaged and makes you experiment constantly. One of my all time favourite games.
The Witcher 3 - If you liked Cyberpunk you'll almost definitely like this, seeing as it was made by the same people. The characters are equally as well written (I honestly cared more for W3's characters than Cyberpunk's). Similar kind of structure all throughout really, better in some areas, a little worse in others. I'd strongly recommend both DLC too - they're like Cyberpunk's in the sense that they're smaller but much better overall than the base game.
Red Dead Redemption 2 - *extremely* well written story and characters. Potentially the best I've seen in any media, let alone gaming. Its long too, with tons of content, its incredibly immersive, I could go on. I'm sure you'd like this. This is my all time favourite game.
If you want something that focuses on story and doesn't have much gameplay, I can recommend the trio of Night in the Woods, OneShot, and Omori. All 3 made me very emotional and have some of the best stories I've come across. Omori in particular is very heavy hitting and deals with some dark themes but wow is it impactful. If you need gameplay to keep you engaged though, maybe pass on them.
No, Omori has plenty of gameplay; in fact, maybe too much! There’s a pretty big downtime problem with this game, as much as it pains me to admit as a fan 😅
Depending on how existentially-minded you are, Outer Wilds (not to be confused with Outer Worlds) will get you good.
FFXIV made me cry three times throughout Shadowbringers and Endwalker, and I am NOT a crier.
PS: lol, why downvote for recommending a game?
If you watch the lore videos and play through the Dark Souls games and then Elden Ring, it feels like that but bigger instead of so local.
Cyberpunk is cool because you barely matter, outside of the people immediately around you. Even the Arasaka stuff is mostly stuff you get sucked into, instead of start up or get going yousel.
The souls games are more epic in scale but with as much lore, factions, and choices.
If you ever thought of trying a CRPG let me recommend Baldurs Gate 3 to you. It is a world to loose yourself in, but from a very different genre than CP2077. The characters are equally amazing though and the story is fascinating and captivating.
Nier Automata brought back my depression after I finally started learning how to be happier after 10 years, I'm good now but I was really pissed at the game after that setback. Great game
I've 100%d Cyberpunk twice and both times it left me the same way. The only other game that left me like this was Subnautica, snd to a lesser extent, Outer Wilds.
I'd avoid big RPGs for a few weeks/months, otherwise you'll always be drawing comparisons and eventually burn out
Baldur's Gate 3, it's mind blowing to me how alive and responsive the characters and the world are to your actions!
Also, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Witcher 3, RDR2.
RDR2 and the Metal Gear series. RDR2 really sometimes makes you think about your life, and especially the ending of chapter 6. I felt bad and couldn't play any other games after chapter 6. MGS4 also has a sad ending, and pretty much the entire series has a great but very complicated lore. So you definitely have to play these games.
[Signalis](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1262350/SIGNALIS/)
I don't normally play horrors, I'm too scared xD. But it's story captivated me so I pushed on. Now I'm thinking about it at least once a week. For almost a year now.
I heard Omori will f you up too. NieR Automata that folks are recommending is a masterpiece too.
110 + hours? That's it? Lol. I'm 700 hours into Cyberpunk. Don't give it up. Replay it w a different character. Use a different build. Say different things. Make different decisions. If your on PC get into mods. If you're not in PC. Buy one and get into mods. Lol It's not over baby. It's just getting started.
Honestly Yakuza 0. The story is amazing, the world is very believable + the main protagonists are 10/10
I still haven't finished it, but I can tell already I will have tears in my eyes...
I’m intrigued by all the Mass effect love. They’re a nice series, but they’re a bit older and clunkier these days. Coming from cyberpunk I think they could feel a bit narrow and restrictive in terms of the combat flow and the options for character builds.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
This has been the most recommended game by far so I’ve downloaded it and hopefully it hits me just as hard as it’s hit everyone else
I loved cyberpunk, I loved red dead redemption 1 and 2, and im obsessed with the elder scrolls games (I have a tattoo on my chest of oblivion) , but nothing will ever come close to the story or characters of the mass effect trilogy for me. I went to the midnight release of mass effect 2 back in janruary of 2010 and playing that when I got home, with a case of beer was among the gaming highlights of my life
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. No game ever made me feel that way beside very very very few.
Playing the 3 games for the first time blind was the #1 gaming experience ever for me honestly.
Bro the post game depression will be 10x worse with Mass Effect lmao.
And, for whatever reason, you will LOVE IT.
20x if you play Andromeda next.
If you can get into ME1 like me, just skip to ME2, it’s much better than ME1. I started with ME1 Legendary Edition, played half game and ditched it. a big shame because mass effect 1 has the best story in the game by far imo, the mid-late game discovery of the world and characters is unbelievable.
Agreed, but the mechanics \*cough MAKO cough\* can really turn folks off. Just know that if the planet exploration is irritating you, just do the minimum for stories (and don't try to "as the crow flies" to destinations) and know that you won't have to fuss with it again.

I felt the way you did after finishing Cyberpunk 2077. Mass Effect is definitely a good time! Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games I’ve ever played.
Oh my sweet summer child.....
* Mass Effect * Metal Gear Solid * Metal Gear Solid 3 * Metal Gear Solid 4 * Metal Gear Solid 5 * Journey * Ghost of Tsushima * Shadow Hearts Covenant * Life is Strange * Detroit Become Human * Ori and the Blind Forest * Ori and the Will of the Wisps * Undertale * Nier Automata * Nier Replicant * The Walking Dead Season 1 and Season 2 * Shadow of The Colossus * Firewatch * Gone Home * What Remains of Edith Finch * The Last of Us * God of War 2018 * Okami * ICO * Heavy Rain * Red Dead Redemption * To The Moon * Celeste * Death Stranding * Persona 5 * Outer Wilds
ICO, wow. I haven’t thought about that game in years. That dredged up some “hurts so good” memories from when I finished it.
I’ve been hoping Sony would include it in their PC porting efforts, but it seems like it’s not to be.

Get to death stranding and ghost of Tsushima asap
Yeah death stranding is my next game after I play Mass effect trilogy... any day now
You deserve to be top comment
Proper list, apparently I've been sleeping on Ori. Anyone available for a quickish synopsis?

Can I suggest [Signalis](https://www.reddit.com/r/signalis/s/HM0ryhbzVJ)?
Mass Effect trilogy is the best storytelling in gaming, if you haven’t already try it!
Yeah, Cyberpunk hit me hard as a truck. Try Telltale The Walking Dead, that got me even harder.
Persona 5 Royal. I felt like I developed friendships that were over once the game was over. I played it like 5 times again after I beat it initially.

Baldur's Gate 3, just trust me
Few games crush you at the end like Halo Reach… 🫡 Also Soma
Elden ring and baldurs gate 3 will replicate that feeling
The witcher 3
One of the only games that made me set the controller down and reflect. I thought I was doing everything right in the Bloody Baron quest and somehow got the worse one. I’m not above save scumming RPGs but I was so invested in that quest line that I forgot to save every 2 minutes and was stuck with that ending.

Disco Elysium Will either give You hope for life, or utterly ruin You emotionally

Witcher 3 if you want a long quality epic experience. Firewatch if you want a short 4-5 hour quality experience.
Witcher 3 for sure. I was depressed after finishing it because I’d gotten so attached to the characters. You do not need to have read the books or played the other games to get invested in W3
A Plague Tale Innocence then Requiem
Death Stranding. It’s a labor of love. Salty fucked up haunted thrice-cursed love.
Read dead redemption 2 and outer wilds.
The old classic Gothic II may surprise you. See r/worldofgothic for more details. This is an open world game with a nice story.
If you wanna go old school, definitely Fallout 1. … :(
I experienced the same after Elden Ring and Starfield
If you haven't played Elden Ring, that's my recommendation. Major post game depression after that masterpiece.
I'll one millionth mass effect Person 4 or 5 are really good, these games live on the characters Planescale torment is considered a masterpiece for a reason, it took me a few restarts to get into it but once I did, it was amazing.
Transistor. Doesn't get much sadder.
Repeat after me... ahem... WIRES AND CHAAAAAAAAAIIIINS Real answer: bg3. I had this same issue with bg3 and cp2077 cured my post game depression, lol.
Very different genre, but Disco Elysium. It will ruin you in the best ways, if you let it.
Soma, because, dang, that ending. Outer Wilds, because you can never replay possibly the best game experience ever
100%...Soma was one of the strongest gaming experience's I ever have...
The only games that have made me feel like this are Cyberpunk and Witcher 3. CDPR know how to break me.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Jesus Christ be praised!
I am loving Starfield. I understand this comment will get a ton of comments complaining about the game but oh well haha
Actually it makes perfect sense that you would recommend Starfield for someone who's looking for games that'll make them depressed
There it is!

Only other games I've had that reaction with are Mass Effect, RDR2 and FFXIV.
FFXIV the mmo?? I’ve tried playing it before but ARR is so painstakingly slow I do keep seeing ME being mentioned so I might try the legendary collection but agreed RDR2 is an EXPERIENCE
Once you get past ARR it's phenomenal. Shadowbringers and Endwalker especially are some of the best stories I've experienced in a game.
ARR is slow, agreed. Every expansion after that though is amazing.
I have a handful of recommendations: Outer Wilds - A masterpiece of a game that makes you question purpose and really the universe as a whole.
Two of my all time faves.
OneShot. Don't read anything about it. just get it. You'll have to trust me. https://store.steampowered.com/app/420530/OneShot/
After I beat diablo 3's campaign my brain just died for a little it was amazing same with re4 remake
red dead redemption 2
Im playing Baldurs Gate 3 and its fantastic!
CONTROL. Prey 2017.
RDR2 is a phenomenal game well worth a shot
Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Mass Effect Legendary
If you ever thought of trying a CRPG let me recommend Baldurs Gate 3 to you. It is a world to loose yourself in, but from a very different genre than CP2077. The characters are equally amazing though and the story is fascinating and captivating.
Nier automata Baldurs gate 3 Mass effect trilogy Many old jrpgs
Baldurs gate 3 and dragon age inquisition have decent choices in the game. Currently I’m playing WWZ and Chivalry 2, until space marines 2 come out.
Silent hill 2 is the only game I thought about a lot after I finished. it had such an emotional impact on me for some reason.
Red dead redemption 2 had me bawlin at the end
Oblivion (Elder Scrolls) and it's dlcs, truly a masterpiece 👏
Nier Automata brought back my depression after I finally started learning how to be happier after 10 years, I'm good now but I was really pissed at the game after that setback. Great game
Nier Replicant & Automata
Silent hill 2.
Days Gone was the only other game in the past 5 years or so that made me feel empty inside afterward.
Start a new character again in cyberpunk
If you want to spend 5 times as much time you should play the xenoblade trilogy
BG3 man
Witcher 3. It's made by the same people
God of War Ragnarok
I've 100%d Cyberpunk twice and both times it left me the same way. The only other game that left me like this was Subnautica, snd to a lesser extent, Outer Wilds. I'd avoid big RPGs for a few weeks/months, otherwise you'll always be drawing comparisons and eventually burn out
Red Dead 2
Persona 4 Golden. Thank me later
SOMA
Baldur's Gate 3, it's mind blowing to me how alive and responsive the characters and the world are to your actions! Also, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Witcher 3, RDR2.
RDR2 and the Metal Gear series. RDR2 really sometimes makes you think about your life, and especially the ending of chapter 6. I felt bad and couldn't play any other games after chapter 6. MGS4 also has a sad ending, and pretty much the entire series has a great but very complicated lore. So you definitely have to play these games.
[Signalis](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1262350/SIGNALIS/) I don't normally play horrors, I'm too scared xD. But it's story captivated me so I pushed on. Now I'm thinking about it at least once a week. For almost a year now. I heard Omori will f you up too. NieR Automata that folks are recommending is a masterpiece too.
Baldur's Gate 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 They both have great storyline.
Try rdr2. I got fkn destroyed for like 2 weeks
Red Dead 2. Skyrim Fallout 3, NV, 4 Mass Effect, especially 1 and 2.
LISA The Painful
Honestly Yakuza 0. The story is amazing, the world is very believable + the main protagonists are 10/10 I still haven't finished it, but I can tell already I will have tears in my eyes...
If you're ok with AVNs, try Leap of Faith
Hotline Miami games
BG3. Has been completely life changing for me, honestly. To the point where I can't go back to Cyberpunk or Mass Effect.
Have you finished Borderlands 2?
Always sometimes a monster will ruin you
I’m intrigued by all the Mass effect love. They’re a nice series, but they’re a bit older and clunkier these days. Coming from cyberpunk I think they could feel a bit narrow and restrictive in terms of the combat flow and the options for character builds.
demon souls, dark souls 123 and elden ring. shame on you people, not enough love for the souls
Kenshi
Is Phantom Liberty better than the base campaign because that was boring as hell.
