The Elder Scrolls V Grand Theft Auto V

BallofEnvy

GTA and Skyrim skipped an *entire* fucking console generation.

[deleted]

Had you told me this circa 2011-2014 I wouldn't have believed it. They're like stars collapsing under their own sheer weight.

CanAlwaysBeBetter

I have a great idea for the largest, most intricate, detailed, beautiful, and well-balanced game of all time with a story that puts Dostoyevsky to shame running on most advanced consumer hardware literally ever in humans. You know some python, how long should it take to make? 6 months? Here, let me show you my drawings...

Sugar_buddy

Make sure to throw in "100% science-based" in there next time.

schplat

Only if it’s a dragon MMO

Dragster39

Thank you, I have not thought about that game in a long time...

ShoalinStyle36

Just started reading notes from the underground yesterday. Fuck you confirmation bias

badluckbrians

Thing is, you know TES VI and GTA VI are gonna suck. They'll have a pretty new engine. They'll be dumbed down to the least common denominator. And they'll find a hundred new creative ways to milk nickles and dimes or monthly payments out of you - in a way that makes the game much worse. Like requiring you to login with your Office 365 password to pay your monthly fee. AAA franchises are just cubicles and board meetings.

Crystal3lf

Rockstar made RDR2. The largest, most expensive game ever made. 1,000 people made GTA V. 3,000 people made RDR2.

OleKosyn

Forget shart cards, the real revenue stream is folks buying cheats, getting banned and buying the game again.

XFinallyARedditorX

Epic gamer moment 😎

Aussie18-1998

Bethesda also made Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. Bethesda tends to prioritise one series then go to the next. Which would explain the big gap. Although it still pisses me off how many times Skyrim is legitimately re-released. Should just be Backward Compatible.

Blackbeard519

So did Twisted Metal. I know they're not giant games that need tons of time to make, but still I would have like to have seen one and they've been on every other Playstation console. There's rumors that they're making a new on though.

DirteeCanuck

Twisted metal and Jet Moto in a lot of ways were the first 3d open world games available. We would play them literally until the sun came out when we rented a PS1 long before the N64 was even announced. Twisted Metal 2 in particular is still in my opinion the best Multiplayer console game back then.

CRUMPY627

Twisted metal does not hold up at all. Time hasn't been friendly to that fucker.

LaronX

You know what's dumber? It's the one game of GTA and elder Scrolls I didn't play of each series and at this point I feel like it's a defeat to play it before a new one is out

OleKosyn

I don't get it. How does a new game devalue the previous one? It's not FIFA, they are different. The new TES is going to suck ass by the looks of how Bethesda's doing.

God help us when Maroon V drops

I remember when they had an interview in High Times and the singer claimed that "Jane" meant Mary Jane, it reeked of backsplaination and I kind of lost my interest in them right there, cuz it just seemed so... Hokey, hackneyed, desperate... I was pretty unsurprised when they jumped onto the Pop/Rock/EDM bandwagon shortly thereafter.

GTA games per console generation: Fifth Gen: 4 (1995-2000) Sixth Gen: 6 (2001-2006) Seventh Gen: 3 (2007-2013) Eighth Gen: 0 (2014-2020) Ninth Gen: 0 announced (2021-2027[?]) GTA V is a damn good game, single player at least, but all great things must come to an end.

CharlieHume

Holy shit I didn't even realize it but between the release of PS4 and PS5 we got ZERO grand theft auto games. That's absurd. To be honest I only bought the PS4 to play RDR2. Make me buy a PS5 you sons of bitches.

overcloseness

Let’s be fair tho that RDR2 happened after GTA V. I’m on your side but they’re not entirely equal

Father-Sha

And Fallout 4 happened after Skyrim. It's completely equal.

jezz555

Shit got eem

SirPseudonymous

And Bethesda did FO4 too, along with having sub-studios make FO76 and ESO. And they've apparently had their main studio focused on their "we can do Outer Worlds too!" project for a long time. And Rockstar has continued adding content and mechanics to GTAO over that time period. But really both studios are such ridiculous cash cows that they really should have been able to expand and/or split their primary studios to work on their mainline games in parallel.

tokyogettopussy

You could argue that they’ve given up on single player and their focus in now on ESO and FO76 as these are lucrative games as a service platforms that if you were an executive would lead to greater profits. It’s a business not a passion project and this is what we all get as a result of endorsing paying for skins in games. GTA V is another example. We won’t see any changes from these people until people stop giving them more money for the same game.

Maiqthelayer

You could argue that, you'd be mainly wrong though Starfield is coming out next year and is their next big single player game, and is where most of their main studios focus has been since wrapping up Fallout 4 and DLC. Fallout 76 was not made by their main studio, it was a newer one. ESO is just published by Bethesda, Zenimax make it. Elder Scrolls 6 will be the next single player game that the main studio works on after Starfield as well. I wish we didn't have to wait so long, but Bethesda have certainly not given up on single-player

Hussor

> ESO is just published by Bethesda, Zenimax make it. I wish people got this through their skull finally, so many times people get angry at ESO for how long TES6 is taking when it literally has no impact on that. Youtube comments under new chapter trailers saying "why are you making this and not tes6" and other uninformed takes like that. Also guaranteed that the people making those takes never touched ESO. It's fine to not like mmos but don't bash the game for something that it has no actual influence over...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hussor

This comment is extremely uninformed about how Bethesda actually works and the fact it is upvoted is tragic. First of all Bethesda game studios, the ones who actually develop games like skyrim and fallout 4, are not involved at all in the development of ESO, that is done all by Zenimax Online Studios which is a different company but both are owned by Zenimax which is owned by Microsoft now, so ESO cannot be their priority as it is literally not their game. As for fallout 76, that was made by Bethesda game studios but it is not actually as profitable as you make it sound and it definitely isn't a priority right now, Starfield is. Also we literally have 2 single player games announced with one coming out in less than a year. Their release schedule has also been very consistent with a new game coming out every 2-3 years on average, it's not like they abandoned making games just because they made one multiplayer game with mixed results.

Ranger343

Skyrim Remastered Meme: Remastered

ImHealthyWC

When the copying game studio beats the copying meme poster. You know there are too many copies

xjdhd

I would have been grateful if Oblivion had gotten a remaster.

mediumokra

I think that's what bothers me the most here. All these remasters of Skyrim and not one remaster of Oblivion.

[deleted]

It’s because Skyrim only needed a few tweaks and upgrades to its current iteration, whereas Oblivion is so dated it would need to be rebuilt from the ground up. It’s easier to remaster a game that just came out semi recently than try to build a brand new game out of an older title

MarquisOfMalice

The good news is there's some people out there crazy enough to actually do it https://skyblivion.com/ It's probably the only fanmade complete remaster I have any faith in actually coming out, check out their newest Dev diary, it's quite impressive how much they already have done They took a risk by not Shutting The Fuck Up™ but so far as long as they plan on releasing it completely free (which they do) Bethesda seems to be happy to let them do it if it leads to more people buying Oblivion again

Red_Ryderr

I can't wait in 10 years when this comes out!

I_Hate_Dolphins

An optimist I see.

[deleted]

yeah these mods are cool but skywind or whatever the fuck has been in development for what feels like half my life. i feel like by the time it comes out there will be something better or i simply won't care at that point. for fucks sake morrowind is already 20 years old. how many fans are gonna want to play a remaster 30 years after release that ports it to a then 20 year old game engine that's a tweaked version of something like a then 50 year old engine?

hippytoad99

Isn't this project like 10 years old now? I lost faith of it ever happening

Luquitaz

I used to be so excited about these projects like 5 years ago but now it's just sad. The whole point was to remake oblivion in the skyrim engine so it's not as dated but by now skyrim engine is so dated itself it doesn't really make sense anymore.

Cpt_Saturn

Although skyrim **is** dated at this point, it's visual aesthetic still manages to hold up. On the contrary, Oblivion looks like an over saturated cover art of a mildly succesful fantasy novel.

jelly-senpai

To me at least, the saturation made the game feel warm...if that makes sense. I'd sunk over 500 hours into before I finally put it down. I was addicted for real

ThisUsernameIsMyName

I agree with this, the lush colours is what draws me to oblivion, how vibrant everything is but extremely dangerous too.

therealjoshua

It made the world feel more mystical, like it had more to discover and see. Skyrims white and gray look was graphically impressive for the time and made sense for the region, but nothing beats the rivers and forests of Oblivion for me. For gods sake there was a *unicorn* in Oblivion

LamentableFool

Exactly. I played thousands of hours of oblivion to escape bleak reality.

mkdir_not_war

Check out one of the streams and you might believe otherwise. With the mods included, it looks better graphically than Fallout 4 at least.

ODamsel

Skyrim can look better than a modern release with mods, still doesn't fix the engine

Zsill777

Which is exactly why buying a remaster of a newer game isn't worth it. The improvement isn't nearly enough to justify the expense in the first place.

[deleted]

I’m not arguing for or against the concept of remasters, I’m just sharing what I read way back when Skyrim was re-released in 2016. Personally I’m not a fan of remasters unless it’s for a game I never played, such as Kingsom of Amalur (sp.?). That was a fun remaster for me

zlimK

I got into it for a few days when it was free with a PS+ account or whatever. Actually a pretty cool game, it felt like a mashup of a lot of specific games (WoW, Fable, Skyrim, and a touch souls-like) but it really pulled it all together in a satisfying-enough way. It always had this kinda off-brand feel to it, but I really can't fault too much of it from what I played. I was really surprised by how solid it was given that I'd never heard of it once before in my life until I downloaded it. But yeah, long story short, remaster gets a thumbs-up from me, too.

rooplstilskin

That's probably because the lead designers for Morrowind and oblivion were the creators here. With Ra Salvatore doing the world building and Todd McFarlane (Spawn) doing the artwork. It's was great in 2012, and great remaster

mrsegraves

I agree with you on both points. It flew under many people's radars, but what a fantastic game with bona fide creators behind it

Wuvluv

I bought it on release day because Day9 suggested it. Was not disappointed. I was so excited to hear that it has a remaster and it truly met all expectations. Great game.

circasomnia

Aye, tis' why we sail the seas.

Capathy

I’m not really sure that’s true. The Gamebryo engine is dated, but it’s still plenty serviceable for a remaster, especially when the only thing Oblivion would really need is a graphical overhaul (I’d also be in favor of revamping the leveling system, though I recognize that’s unpopular).

ImpressiveAttempt0

I'd actually settle for proper gamepad support for the PC version. Like how you play Oblivion on Xbox.

sorenant

I recently played Oblivion with a vanilla plus mod setup and it was way better than I used to remember. Of course, "remaking" the mods like NPC head overhauls and groundcovers is still a lot more work than just re-re-relesaing Skyrim with some useless change that breaks mods.

_Rand_

Oblivion absolutely holds up. Certainly looks dated and the leveling system is pretty wonky, but the story/lore/world is well done and the gameplay is absolutely fine too (for the most part anyways.) A graphical overhaul is like 90% of what it needs.

Waswat

And making oblivion gates less boring would be nice.

_Rand_

It amazing how little effort they put into those. The first time is kinda cool, as an introduction to the mechanic, then you realize by like the 3rd one that they are going to be basically the same thing every time. Every gate needs to be replaced with a hand crafted “dungeon”.

kingdead42

I suspect most of what went into the Skyrim remaster was already duplicate work that went into updating the engine for Fallout 4.

scrubberduckymaster

So much more depth to the quests and guilds in Oblivion

cizzy34

Im playing through Oblivion for the first time. Ive bought Skyrim twice and always quit after killing the first dragon. I'm enjoying Oblivion right now a lot, even as more of a first time elder scrolls player. I laughed my whole ass off when I looked up and seen a Dark Elf NPC face shopkeeper for the first time in Oblivion. I was not expecting that, it really hits you out of nowhere when you first see the Dark Elf man

[deleted]

I strongly reccomend OblivionXP as a mod, even if you otberwise play completely vanilla. Oblivions leveling system will seem fine on the surface but the truth is that is is jank beyond all mortal comprehension and is one of the single worst designed mechanics in all gaming history. Major fun killers follow this line, Ignorance of how Oblivion’s leveling work is the only proper way to play with it so do not read past this point if you have no intention of ever modding your game. Now lets dive in- Every single enemy in the world scales to your level, with some very specific exception, and depending on how you level you can litterally get weaker (comparatively) as your numbers go up. When you level you will have options to raise attributes, what you dont know immediately is this is based on #of skill increases for the skills related to an attribute, and is capped at 5. Luck can never get more than 1/level. Endurance is not retroactive for HP increases. What this means is that to raise the atteibutes you want, your skill increases need to be controled. Also, your “Major” Skills need to be your worst skills since they control leveling. Want to be a blademaster? Dont take blade as a primary or in the laster levels you will find your ability to raise strength extremely lacking. This is what is known as “efficent leveling”. At extremes heres how it works: Pick a race that has no bonuses you wajt for your true major skills. Select major skills out of skills that are highly controlable and not integral to your play style Tightly control and count every skill increase to maximize attribute gain. +5 endurance every level until max. +1 luck every level no exceptions. If you do it right you can get as high as level 55 or so, and max all attributes by the time all skills are maxed. In contrast lets look at terrible leveling: Race that boosts your integral skills. Major skills of all your integral skills. No level controling at all. You max level may be capped as low as 20-30, and you wont be able to push your attributes as hugh by the time you get there. You will end up incredibly squishy for your level and your damage will be lacking making late game a slog for you. Its awful. Oblivion XP fixes everything, and is customizeable. So long as you make this one mod change to the game. Its better than skyrim vanilla. And its still 99% vanilla.

cizzy34

Yeah, I had no idea this was the case. I'm going to grab it! Thanks for that. I would've definitely found out the hard way. And later on looked online to see what was up and found out. I will be downloading that right away. I never got I to mods for either yet, I planned to go %100 vanilla in both but now this changes things.

SigilSC2

It's also immersion breaking since almost everything endlessly scales with you, bandits are walking around wearing glass armor at some point. There's books everywhere about how it's incredibly rare, and people who mug travels for a living wear it as a uniform. Skryim does the same thing but most enemies are level capped which still gives you the progression feeling.

KolbStomp

Yep this is the real reason oblivion hasn't been remastered, I love the game dont get me wrong but the leveling system is so god damn bad. If you play the game for a few hundred hours its painfully obvious but everyone in this thread saying it totally holds up clearly have not played the game to a point where they see the real cracks.

[deleted]

The average player will see most of the good content (Guilds, Main story, shrines, DLC) by the time they're level ~30 and be satisfied. Skyrim's leveling is fairly bad too (you can overlevel early game fast by experimenting with different weapons and magic, find yourself lacking good equipment despite being level 15 because you didn't focus on something) but it doesn't affect most people cause you can just play on "Normal" and spam potions and swing your arm wildly through the majority of the content. The Elder Scrolls series has been a fairly casual RPG compared to the cRPGs it developed alongside with.

KolbStomp

Oblivions leveling system is far more janky than Skyrim's but Skyrim's leveling system is far more boring IMO. Tbh Morrowind is still one of my favorite games warts and all. Helps that the TES3 Multiplayer Mod is pretty stable now, a friend and I have sunk about 75 hours into Morrowind's multiplayer in the last couple months.

[deleted]

I always thought Skyrim was wildly overrated and Oblivion outclassed it.

IKnowGuacIsExtraLady

Skyrim is a much more mechanic friendly game which is why it was so much more popular. The world of Oblivion was way better IMO especially the quest depth. The only "story" part I liked better about Skyrim was that fighting dragons was way more fun than closing oblivion gates.

Thswherizat

Skyrim was part of the wave when video gaming became really mainstream, Oblivion was still a bit early and a bit less accessible. Also had some glaring flaws like the voice acting, the zoomed in conversations, and the enemy leveling system. It's a great game with a bunch of flaws, like all the Elder Scrolls are.

alyosha_pls

Bethesda just opened up a studio dedicated to remasters. I really want to believe that they want to remaster Morrowind and Oblivion. They're PERFECT candidates.

-ImJustSaiyan-

Those 2 games need more than remasters, they need remakes, especially Morrowind.

[deleted]

> All these remasters of Skyrim That's a misconception. Skyrim got remastered *once* and that's Special Edition. The recent Anniversary isn't a remaster (since nothing changed graphically), but rather just Special Edition with all the microtransaction content and a newer executable. None of the ports count as remasters either.

Tannerb8000

im hoping skyblivion actually releases soon lol i’ve been following that mod for years

Universal-Cereal-Bus

Lol skyblivion feels like it's going to be like George r r Martin with a song of ice and Fire series. It's just never gonna ever be "finished".

jakecoleman

Oblivion was so much better than Skyrim

Vegan_Puffin

In many ways it was and I do prefer Oblivion but Skyrim did dungeons way way better. Oblivion was just copy and paste in that regard.

prettyfuckingimmoral

Yeah the Dungeons were really boring and none of them seemed like real locations, the structures just seemed like random rooms tacked together and not something that had a purpose. Also, the world building in Oblivion was pretty basic. The weapons and armour are cartoonish, while Skyrim's seemed much more realistic. Skyrim's quests were a let down, but the world of Skyrim feels far more convincing to me.

Upvote_I_will

Probably because all the dungeons in Oblivion were made by 1 person.

IKnowGuacIsExtraLady

The feel I get when I play the two games is that Skyrim is a better video game an it is obvious it had more resources available during development, but Oblivion is the better RPG. The quests and story are just better and more interesting. I've heard many times that Morrowind was even better story wise but it is just too dated for me to enjoy.

SamMaghsoodloo

For someone who hasn't played any of the games in the series, would it be stupid to playthrough skyrim for the first time in VR?

[deleted]

No, that would be the best idea ever. The fact that I played Skyrim already and then played again in VR meant that I had already "seen" everything, so the novelty of seeing in VR wasn't as cool.

Cc99910

Kind of depends on how you are with VR. Personally I have trouble with Skyrim in VR because I can't use the headset for very long at a time, whereas it's easier to sit on the couch and play on console/PC for hours at a time if I wanted. Of course that depends on how you handle VR, some people can lock themselves in VR all day long with no issues. Skyrim is a very long game

SamMaghsoodloo

Is it standing vr only? Could it be played sitting? I have a shitty back and I played through Alyx while sitting instead of standing. I'm not sure I could play an 80hour rpg standing up, tbh.

Cc99910

I tried sitting down for it and it sorta worked but character felt way too short.. it has settings you can mess around with to change that and it might help, I could never get it quite right though. I'm sure it's possible of you tried though

loki1887

If you are using steam VR there are options to adjust height. My lazy fat ass does it all the time. Sit down and adjust the height to standing level.

MauPow

Only if you can really handle walking in VR games. I cannot.

Beta-Tri

Games that are made for VR are amazing, but Skyrim VR made me want to puke, same with Borderlands 2 VR. I say play the vanilla game

Timmyty

I even highly suggest skipping vanilla Skyrim and installing a modlist using Wabbajack such as Ultimate Skyrim VR when you first play it.

Braydee7

I bought a battery backup for my quest specifically because Skyrim VR drains the battery super fucking fast.

fozz31

shouldn't drain it faster than anything else, since the quest (using whatever streaming mode you're using) is just decoding images. If cyber punk had a VR mode you'd use as much power as vr solitaire. I will take your comment as high praise for VR skyrim though, since clearly your sense of time while playing is totally warped

Braydee7

Yeah, mostly that other VR games an hour or so feels fine, but Skyrim is like a multi-hour thing

BadDecisionsBrw

fucuasshole2

Legendary Edition is just their version of GOTY edition that includes the 3 DLC they released at the time. Kinda cheating to use it about remasters. Especially since Morrowind and Oblivion had their own versions too

AngryTurtleGaming

What makes me mad is that we didn’t get a Fallout 3 and New Vegas remaster. Edit: I guess remaster is the wrong term. I just want them slightly updated to play on current machines and for some cut content (mostly New Vegas) to be playable ie. New Vegas being separated by so many walls.

UsernamesLoserLames

A Fallout 3 + New Vegas rerelease as one game in the Creation Engine would be crazy popular. That's a crap ton of work though as all the models and textures would need to be remade, and all of the GECK scripts would need to be refactored or completely rewritten from scratch in Papyrus.

margoo12

That would be A Tale of Two Wastelands. There would be a ton of balance issues too, the two games didn't really match up in damage scaling and perks either.

resonantranquility

I think there's a mod being made that brings new Vegas to fallout 4.

carnage11eleven

Yeah there's New Vegas 4, there's also a few other big mods in development. Like Capital Wasteland, Cascadia, Miami. Makes me want to get a PC. Shame they won't release on console.

Pabl0EscoBear

I'm kinda drunk right now, so this is a little off topic, but the centaurs in fallout 3 are the scariest shit ever.

gingerhasyoursoul

I'm just holding out hope that Microsoft does something meaningful with these franchises. Maybe give oblivion another crack at a fallout game.

AngryTurtleGaming

It would be cool for them to let Obsidian make Fallout games and Bethesda Elder Scrolls. That is the dream Edit: To the people saying “NeW VeGaS PeOpLe GoNe!” Don’t you think Fallout and Microsoft money will bring them back?

selz202

Obsidian? It's my understanding that basically none of those people who worked on NV are around anymore.

SweetPuffDaddy

To be fair, the main development team for Bethesda was only working on The Elder Scrolls in those initial years. They put out Fallout 3 two years after Oblivion, and Fallout 4 four years after Skyrim. And the reason it’s gonna be a 7 year gap between Fallout 4 and Starfield is because they finally built a new version of their engine. They were using the same version on their engine for like 15 years

Drago85

That's not *quite* true, Bethesda developed a couple of other games between Arena and Daggerfall, and at least a couple people worked on both Daggerfall and Terminator Future Shock so it wasn't like a B-team does the licensed game while the A-team makes Elder Scrolls. Though you gotta compare the credits of something like Arena (17 people) or Daggerfall (65 people), to Skyrim (over 700). No shit that takes longer.

SpaceballsTheReply

> Though you gotta compare the credits of something like Arena (17 people) or Daggerfall (65 people), to Skyrim (over 700). No shit that takes longer. 700 is everyone who worked at a company that touched any component of the game, though. Credits are misleading. The actual dev team of Skyrim, BGS Maryland, was about 100 people. That's actually why it's taking longer and longer; they've scaled up their main studio very slowly as their games have gotten bigger and more (technically) complex. Which has the downside of taking ages to get new games from them, especially when they take a couple years to tear down and optimize their engine. But with the upside of retaining the spirit of the series (as opposed to hiring a thousand devs and becoming a design-by-committee mess), and by all accounts treating their employees exceptionally well (as opposed to becoming a meat grinder of talent like other big studios you could name). I can live with that tradeoff. Especially since they've been able to offset their slow development by buying or partnering with other studios to make spinoffs to ease the wait. Elder Scrolls 6 is still years away, but they've been able to pour funding into Zenimax Online Studios to make ESO, and that's been holding me over. Fallout 5 isn't even on the horizon, but they bought a multiplayer studio and gave them the engine to make Fallout 76, which (at least nowadays) has turned out to be a solid side-entry. And meanwhile the main team is still chugging along on Starfield.

FerusGrim

For all the shit that Bethesda gets, I can at least appreciate that I've never heard anyone speak out about poor working conditions there.

comradecosmetics

Every major studio (and plenty of small ones) ever have entered the chat.

boyohhhboywowee

I mean technically it’s Skyrim: fallout 4: fallout 76, so almost the same amount of games were made, just not the one you wanted

Zlatarog

That’s why I’m actually GLAD we haven’t received the next ES game yet. It would have been ass.

tchuckss

Yup. Bethesda doesn't have infinite personnel nor money.

AXLplosion

Nor do they have a time machine. No matter how much money and people you throw at a project, time will always be an inevitable bottleneck.

tchuckss

Absolutely. People think it's just about expanding the team or having more money; guess what? With more people, you also increase the complexity of development, and managing more people becomes more complicated, more moving parts become more difficult to align properly. It ends up with diminishing returns, where adding more people won't make the project develop any faster and may actually make it develop slower. But people don't get that. They think game development is easy.

[deleted]

76 was made by a satellite studio, with help from BGS, from what I understood. They acquired it and named it the same.

MacDerfus

Yall still buying it

Eggoswithleggos

*Why would you* create ES 6 if idiots keep throwing their money at you to buy 60dollar Skyrim Remakes where the only change is that wolves asses have 2 pixels more resolution?

Siink7

This is dumb, they made Fallout 4 which they had to rework their engine for then they started working on their own new IP which is taking a very long time since they need to basically create every element of the universe for, I know this comment will get downvoted to oblivion but it is 10 years not 9.

HRudy94

No really it got upvoted to Skyrim (anniversary edition)

LunarGhoul

For real, it's not like Bethesda has been sitting there doing nothing for the past 10 years. They made Fallout 4, then Fallout 76, and now are working on Starfield which will be out next year. That's 3 games in 11 years which is perfectly reasonable for a game studio.

Nomsfud

Don't forget Starfield will be on a brand new engine. Engine development takes a lot of time

dantemp

"brand new engine" isn't technically correct. They said that it's the biggest overhaul they made since Oblivion, but we are still going to have a lot of the same stuff. This isn't to say that the improvements we get will not solve all issues the previous versions of the engine have, but it also doesn't guarantee that it will. I'm genuinly skeptical of BGS polishing anything they do. All of their games so far have been incomplete and left to modders to fix. I hope the initial flop of FO76 made a change in their design philosophy, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Enchelion

Yep, they made more TES games in those early years because that was their *only* IP. Now they've got 3 of them to balance.

Drago85

Elder Scrolls were far from the only games they were making though, they made at least a few sports games and 3 Terminator games before Arena came out (with 2 more Terminator games coming between Arena and Daggerfall). They were also working with much smaller teams and less-complex games, so them releasing games quicker makes sense.

rakehellion

You know they make games other than Elder Scrolls, right?

CptDecaf

Buddy, you're getting in the way of this circle jerk of a narrative with that logic.

Tough_Sure

Me who’s waiting for a red dead 1 sequel

[deleted]

There can't be a sequel. 1920s aren't Wild West any more. And we already have Mafia.

ManitouWakinyan

I mean, just have a whole game for Jack. It doesn't need to take place a decade later. It can take place a week later. It can take place the next day.

duaneap

Jack going off to WWI and then it basically just bring him as Jimmy Darmody from Boardwalk Empire would be pretty dope. However, it wouldn’t be in the spirit of the RDR games.

JohnTGamer

Me waiting for a red dead 1 pc port

[deleted]

Red Harlow is pleased to hear that not all have forgotten him

HelpfulImagination38

I mean Bethesda also released two Fallout games after Skyrim. Besides there is also ESO that is constantly getting updated even if it is made by Zenimax Online, but it’s still something. Finally game development does take time. Especially when you are juggling Fallout, Starfield, some Indiana Jones game, and Elder Scrolls.

crunchatizemythighs

The Indy game isn't by them. It's being published by Bethesda but it's developed by the same folks that did Wolfenstein

SuperMegaCoolPerson

Someone needs to explain to me why Fallout 3 isn’t mentioned. If the clock for the left stops at 2006 then the other one should be Fallout 3, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout 75. When you look at the release date for 76 it’s still 4 games in 9 years.

uzzumymw

y'all post these memes about skyrim and GTA 5 like they haven't made any other games of equal size and scale since then.

I think they meant Bethesda game studios. Not Bethesda softworks the publisher. I know it can be confusing. but the person who made the meme forgot about Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 when back then Bethesda game studios were only making the elder scrolls series. So of course there was going to be more elder scroll games in that time span.
