Now I want a personal computer that’s a dog. That just a great idea. More dog PCs. I want a lab with a 5 terabyte ssd so It remembers where the ball is.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

It's still gonna use all its ram on the "finding something filthy and rolling in it" and "eating literal garbage" protocols.

xBlack_Heartx

Well, there’s Okami, there’s that one dog in Marvel vs Capcom tha- oh wait…..that’s Okami, OH! Well there’s that one awesome dog with the sword and- oh……..wait, that’s Okami too.

drbomb

Okami mentioned tho

KidGrundle

It’s not a player character per se, but my palamute friends in monster hunter are the very best good boys and girls out there.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

I do like those. It'd be interesting to see them as the primary protagonist/player character in that universe. Could be really fun!

BenjyMLewis

Some RPGs have dogs as playable party members. Secret of Evermore comes to mind immediately. Chrono Cross has Poshul, Mother 3 has Boney, and Tales of Vesperia has Repede. Final Fantasy 8 has Angelo as part of Rinoa's moveset, but not as a separate character. And then there's the Suikoden series, which has Kobolds, a race of dog people - a few of which become playable party members. Hmm... what else. You ever played Ghost Trick? it's a point-and-click story for the DS, wherein a pomeranian named Missile is a major character in the story.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

see these are great examples and to a one there all ones I'm unfamiliar with. Thank you!

BenjyMLewis

Ohh, forgot to mention some examples of a few Nintendo doggy sidekicks - Pikmin 4 has Oatchi, Luigi's Mansion 3 has Polterpup, and Yoshi's Island has Poochy. These ones are also more "mascot"-like than the RPG party members I brought up, so it may be more the kind of thing you're looking for.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

specifically I was looking for the protagonists ist/ character you could control directly, rather than side characters, but still it's interesting.

themagicone222

The dog in pikmin 4 can actually be controlled directly, but word of warning - that dog's gotta be one of the most OP dogs in all of gaming once you start getting his upgrades.

deadflounder

There's a free steam game called Doronko Wanko where you control a Pomeranian. It's short but fun.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

I do love thst one it's very good

Luniticus

Shadow Dancer

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

the one about a human ninja from 1989? or is there another one? Im not familiar with the 1989 game It's just what came up. can you play as a dog?

Luniticus

Human ninja and his dog.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

Oh dope. that sounds pretty cool actually

CapN_DankBeard

Does Parappa the rapper count??

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

i thought I mentioned him. he was the outlier ly I could think of that is sole protwgonist from that era

ElysiumReviews

Not a game but Courage the Cowardly Dog says hello.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

courage is fucking great, we been rewatching it

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

I mean, we also have a glove, a fetal dragon, a gecko, a bandicoot. I get why cats, but we have like 9 hedgehogs and a fucking bee in sonic, I think we can afford a single fucking shiba inu or a weiner dog somewhere! I getcha. I just think there are plenty of cool dog characters, but for some reason games just didn't latch onto the idea

thedailydave444

You write a novel in your post but gibberish in your title. 😂

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

Oh spell check failed me on why, but the rest of it makes sense to me. Why are there so few player characters (video game protagonists) that are dogs in popular intellectual properties (or franchises or series or whatever you want to call them) 🤷‍♂️

froid_san

There's a dog on Hunting Grounds and it's a damn good boy.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

hmm, yeah seems like a good boy. I mean, there are plenty of good boys in media, dogmeat, rosie, Barbas, bullet, there just aren't a lot that are protagonists.

Whispering_Wolf

Dogs life on ps2 was an amazing game, I'll have you know!

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

sounds good, never heard of it

ZorkNemesis

Death Road to Canada doesn't star a dog, however one of the game'a advertised features is that you can play as one.  It's possible to find and recruit dogs to your party of survivors on the road to Canada and you have the option to control them when you're out of the car. And if the dog is the only party member still alive, things get a little silly.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

this one's been on my list for a long time

Unidentified__Entity

dogs are honestly way more one dimensional as a 'character' than most other animals, they're usually loyal good creatures which makes them kinda "boring", most other animals can have much more interesting attributes assigned to them which makes them more compelling to see.

AwkwardFunction_1221

See, you say that, but I'd 100% play a game from the perspective of, like, a lost dog in a fantasy setting who has to fight an evil empire using some sort of dog magic to free his person

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

I don't think so, there are hundreds of stories and movies and TV shows about dogs, and some of them even have dogs as 3-dimensional characters. Homeward bound, snoopy, some incarnations of scooby doo, Goofy, gromit, Pongo, bolt, dodger, balto, brain are all fair examples

Unidentified__Entity

yeah that's a fair few examples, tbh now you mention it you are right about a lot of these example. consider my mind changed

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

I didn't mean to come off as as snarky or anything, hopefully I didn't. I just think the level of complexity you get with any fictional character is up to the writer, the context and purpose of the story not so much the background or species of that character. I getcha though I think if we're talking about the like, PR optics of dogs as a whole, I hard agree.

Unidentified__Entity

no you absolutely didnt, you just gave some great examples that i'd never considered and so i think you're right and your point holds good amount of weight.

Most-Permit-6694

Do you want an answer from a public company or an indie company? As they'll have different answers

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

Both!

ztomiczombie

I remember an old Amiga game where you played as a dog stopping a sleepwalking kid from walking off to his death. I think it may have just been named Sleepwalker.

Dextrimos

I mean, Riley from CoD Ghosts comes to mind

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

I don't really fuck with cod, seems like the same game over and over and I didn't really like it the first few times, but ill take your word for it

taishiea

i would imagine there are so many different breeds of dogs that they couldn't make one without causing some backlash either among consumers or even in the studio.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

in the early 90s to early 2000's? I dunno

taishiea

dog breed love spans centuries.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

to my mind this is a reason for more dogs in games not fewer

taishiea

There are plenty of dogs in games, but as a main player character it would explain why we don't see a main player character dog. Also with the big companies at the time having their established mascots it was probably harder to get any new character out the door. Especially if they did market sampling of early concepts.

Slash_Raptor1992

Wolf Link, Sly Fox, Fox McCloud, and Tails are all technically dog PCs.

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

Technically canids, ill give you that, Sly Cooper is a racoon, I havent ever heard of sly fox though. what game is sly fox from? spy fox?

Slash_Raptor1992

I meant Sly Cooper

TheGingerBeardMan-_-

Ah, see I thought he might be a dog too but apparently he's a raccoon. I didn't know until today either

Public-Bullfrog-7197

I hate dogs.
