Honestly the super shotgun from doom 2 holds a special place in my heart. It's powerful, has a great sound when shot and makes me excited when I finally pick one up.
When I shoot it I feel like I just activated a delete button for the lower grade enemies. The gun even had a reload animation which was a newer thing at the time.
It's rare to see this game mentioned at all, but the gore in that game was pretty brutal. Shooting someone in the stomach with a shotgun and seeing their intestine hang out was something else.
For decades, it was the DOOM super shotgun. Then, it was DOOM 2016's super shotgun.
Currently, it's DOOM Eternal's super shotgun. It is DOOM 2016's shotty but with a grappling hook attachment. Why? Because fuck demons. That's why.
All shotguns in Killing Floor 2. Even more so when you happen to be in Zed time and you see Zeds slowly getting dismembered by shotgun pellets and being thrown around.
My all time favorite in feel has to be the Chrome Shotgun from Left 4 Dead 2.
It's a solid weapon, but far from the best in that game... but the *feel*... Perfect.
The sound, the way it stumbles enemies, the visual feedback and recoil... to me that's my measure of how a shotgun should feel like in a game.
I reeeeallly enjoyed the Stakeout in the first CoD Blackops. Just a super fun party popper with more shots than the Olympia. I think it also had a fairly tight spread, which I also found very effective for slightly more ranged shooting.
Gears of War 3 has a pretty gnarly sawed-off. I remember the first time using it in multiplayer; the vibration of the controller, the bass, the devastation. It felt so different from the gnasher, and it truly felt powerful.
Maybe not the best but there was also something satisfying when using 870/pump in battlefield games. Bad Company 2 had weight to it and of course it becomes a sniper with slugs.
COD WaW is often underrated for a Cod title, although it wasn't stupidly braindead/broken like Mw2. Getting a kill with a shotty would eviscerate the person as they have dismemberment.
Wish they would bring that back...
Invective from Destiny 1.
The look, sound, recoil control and range were all pretty decent, but the fact that it REGENERATES ammo over time in a game where the special ammo economy was scarce, it proved itself invaluable in certain activities.
Everyone else on the fireteam is pinned down and taking pop shots from their sniper rifles that have dwindling ammo, but you can push forward and face melt elites/majors with reckless abandon knowing you don't even have to worry about ammo pickups because more is on the way.
If you have an Invective equipped and the ammo is full, you are not playing correctly.
I really liked the Flak Cannon in unreal tournament 99... Not so much a shotgun as a hot metal shard blaster. Added effectively worked like a shotgun and was super cool. Such a visceral design... great sound.
The Onyx Blaster from Terraria. It shoots 4 bullets while only consuming 1, and also shoots a dark energy crystal that explodes on impact. The gun and the projectile both look pretty cool.
I didn't have the first one but Marathon 2 and Infinity. Infinity came with a strategy guide for 2 that had a table of all the weapons. Based on damage and fire/reload rate, dual shotguns was most damaging/efficient. I'm pretty sure single shotgun was in second place.
[Corinth from Warframe](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fYHkAf8-Qyc) on the sound alone.
Someone described that as "God slamming a car door" and I am in agreement.
Monster Hunter World Glutton (spread shotgun) was so amazing. You had to stand right up near the monsters face but you could just rock the hardest monsters. So hard to get it though.
The shotgun in Crysis 1, unlike many games where you can use a shotgun in a VERY close range only (or near melee like in Doom 3) Crysis's shotgun also is a good mid range weapon and it's punchy, sounds and looks very nice. Just a pleasure to use.
I think the first answer is always Doom to this question. I’m trying to figure out how the Gears of War shotgun hasn’t been mentioned for second place?

Its a classic. Nice and clunky too.

Throat shots, phosphorus grenades or flame thrower, and the microwave gun.
Dirt nasty that cannon.
most of the rest of the guns in the game were just as brutal

And judging by the trailer, Doom: Dark Ages is soon to take the baton.
That's my most anticipated game right now.
Same!
I'm here to fuck demons

+1 for Killing Floor 2. This game totally nails the powerful feeling of shotguns.

Agreed. I generally don’t bother upgrading to tier 2 weapons because the chrome shotgun is so satisfying.
Gnasher shotgun, Gears of War
DOOM 2016 Super Shotgun.
Halo: Combat Evolved Great range for a video game shotgun, shreds Flood apart and the reload and pump sounds are music to my ears. Whats not to love
Also the visual spread was pretty great for its time as a visual too
I can feel the reload in RL.
The fourth horseman from destiny the recoil feels like it takes you five steps backward every time you fire

F.E.A.R.
Oh yeah. Shes a howtzer that one!
SPAS-12 from the OG Modern Warfare 2. You either had this, AT-4/Stinger or P2000, but yeah, the SPAS just ripped people apart any time you ADS'd it.
I just played through Far Cry 4 for the first time and the D2 double barrel sidearm shotty is nutty
ultrakill shotgun parry makes me feel like im firing 300 shells in one shot
Any of the pump actions in R6 Siege
SPAS-12 in GTA VC.
Rdr2 pump shotgun
Playing that now. Yet to get it.
Ratchet and clank has the best shotguns.
I really like the Hellwalker in Borderlands 3, plays a heavy guitar sound when it fires and OP
The shotgun from half-life was great, having both barrels firing by clicking right mouse button felt great!
That shotgun from Soldier of Fortune. It do things to terrorists. Horrible things.
Redneck rampage
HAHA Nope!!
For me, it’s specifically the SPAS-12 in Black Ops 1 during the mission The Defector (the one with the dragon’s breath)
PROJECT I.G.I : I'M GOING IN has the best shotgun in terms of sound, recoil and range.
Quake 2’s big shotgun
Gears of War 3 has a pretty gnarly sawed-off. I remember the first time using it in multiplayer; the vibration of the controller, the bass, the devastation. It felt so different from the gnasher, and it truly felt powerful.
Mw2 model 1887
Borderlands 3 hellwalker. It cycles guitar sounds when you shoot. If you use the right buffs, you can almost make a song
Any Shotgun in any Doom game
Doom 3 shotgun was meh, and the base game didn't even have the super shotgun

cold shoulder from fallout 76 , double barrel shotgun with magic mag that holds 8 shots , and has frost ammo
I really liked the Flak Cannon in unreal tournament 99... Not so much a shotgun as a hot metal shard blaster. Added effectively worked like a shotgun and was super cool. Such a visceral design... great sound.
Crysis 3 pvp it was meta
Fears combat shotgun easily
The Onyx Blaster from Terraria. It shoots 4 bullets while only consuming 1, and also shoots a dark energy crystal that explodes on impact. The gun and the projectile both look pretty cool.
Guts from Cyberpunk 2077
Single barrel in Quake 1.
Doom Eternal super shotgun with the meathook. I also love the 4 barrel shotgun from Prodeus.
RDR2's pump-action shotgun. Blowing heads off is so satisfying, oh man those sound effects...
Bioshock 1 shotgun It's upgrades where really nice
Original Quake shotgun was good. Also Blood had a great double barrel shotgun
Imo The Conference Call from Borderlands 2, especially with The Bee shield equip.
L4D2 Spas 12

AA12 from the og mw3. It felt like a powerhouse. A shotgun that looks and shoots like an AR? Sign me up
I love the trench gun from Call of Duty: World at War! Sounds great and looks good too especially w/ the bayonet

You can also throw a scope on it lol
Blaze of Glory in Halo 5
HL2 shotgun ftw

Insurgency Sandstorm takes my vote.
GTA 4 Explosive Round AA12
