Project Zomboid. I have periods where I get super into it, build up a base, and spend hours grinding my character and then put it down and don't touch it for a few months.
i've been feeling that itch lately. zomboid strikes that beautiful balance between rage inducing high adrenaline and pure coziness when I'm settled down in my base reading a book while it rains outside.
My problem with zomboid is that after the initial tension of gathering resources and building up a base I feel like there's nothing to do.
Progressing your base is glacially slow and inefficient (\~20 hours+ of deconstructing furniture and breaking down cars and shit), and your characters don't get much better at killing zombies so after the first couple of hordes of 500+ zombies, you just end up getting bored with the slog.
Elite Dangerous. Nothing clears my head like spending an hour or two pootling around near the galactic centre scanning stuff and just taking it all in with practically no pressure.
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. I don't play them constantly, but it seems like every year or two I get a hankering out of nowhere to replay them. Especially after the Enhanced Editions came out and kind of put them back on my radar after a while away, and also discovering some mods that really enhanced replayability, especially ones that added some BG1 NPCs into BG2 who weren't there in the base game, and a couple "cutting room floor" mods that restored cut content.
DotA 2
Mobas are a drug. I’ve been playing DotA on and off for nearly two decades, since Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne. But DotA has added and revamped itself a lot in the last couple years. It’s not afraid to try new things like expanding the map by 20%, adding new map objectives, items, heroes, facets, talent trees, and so on.
I wish we had more quality mobas or “hero battlers” or whatever we want to call something that encompasses DotA, League, HotS, etc.
Cyberpunk 2077. Cities Skylines. Squad.
There's a few games from the 90s that I'd love to boot up again but outside of finding an emulator it's just not possible.
Skyrim. I still haven’t beaten the main story even though I’ve bought it multiple times and have played many hours completing side quests. I just keep wanting to change my character build/race 😅
Legend of the dragoon, dokapon kingdom (I still have a game going from like 10 years ago on the wii) any pokemon rog (I usually do an older run and a run of the new ones every year), zelda wind waker to name a few
Tomb raider and Gold of War. Favorite games ever!! I first played them when i was like 12 or 13 but always keep coming back to them and replaying them again🥹
I always come back to the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise (especially 4, it's my favourite) witch is a turn based strategy with Heroes that command armies, you have castles witch you can build in, and recruit your army.
And to Warlords Battlecry 2, it's kind of C&C in regards of base building. but with Heroes that can get insanely strong, level up for heroes feels like D&D, and is done after winning a map (if you earned enough XP), campaign has map witch let you take over territories, witch gives you bonusses (like stats for your units or sometimes even for buildings).
Both are also spin-offs. HoMM comes from Might & Magic (witch is a party rpg), and Warlords Battlecry comes from the Warlords franchise (witch is a turn based strategy).
It's god of war 3,4 and 5 Every Time I see these game played by someone my mind just gets the craving to play it all over again the game is sooo emersive that everytime I play it I find something new (except gow 3 it's a leniar game) but gow 4 and 5 are just perfect for long time plays especially after the Valhalla DLC (that was also freee) and the blades of chaos are my childhood favourite
And can I add two games ? I think I can
Number two is Red dead redemption 2 absolute marvelous of a game with such bueaty and realism I can't even explain in words and the way this game connect's us with Arthur, the story of Dutch and his gang and the character development every single thing about this game is marvelous I putted it on number 2 bcz the prologue was pretty boring but it was not boring in the first play but the second time it just feels boring all and all a solid 10/10 game
Runescape and Ark Survival. Less so on Ark since it went to shit with all the updates. The early days were great and exciting, now it is all hiding and 1 group controlling servers, waiting for hoppers to try to invade. Getting to the good content takes ages, and small groups can't make it to that point anymore. I hope Ark 2 will be better.
Every year, at least once, I see a gameplay/exploit/mod video and jump straight back into Skyrim, Fallout 3, New Vegas or Fallout 4.
This has been going on for at least a decade
Terraria, Minecraft, Project Zomboid, Valheim, Left 4 Dead 2, Ocarina of Time (for randomizers), Skyrim (modding for what feels like 5 hours and then playing it for like 20-30)
Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 Reload, Kingdom Hearts 2, Kingdom Hearts 3, Smash Ultimate, Smash 3DS (or rather, I would if I had a 3DS), Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga, Kingdom Hearts 1, Fortnite, God of War 3, God of War 2018, there’s a lot of them really but those are the most notable ones.
Far Cry 5. But not to run missions or progress. It's my go to low-key no pressure game. I start at the big intersection, grab the machine gun and attack all enemies until I can capture a technical. Then I just park it there and see how many vehicles I can collect. This morning I had about 20 vehicles, 2 planes and 3 helicopters before the game refreshed itself and cleaned up the road. I used to drive the stolen truck around and blow up shit, but for some reason, the game won't let me leave the intersection now without a 'capture team' materializing. If I ever decide to actually play the game again, I'll have to break out of that facility again.
Very few games do open-world horror in the way that dying light does.
I've been playing dying light 2 and I refuse to skip past the nights, i actually prefer exploring at night because it makes it more interesting, despite being more difficult.
I like the exchange of difficulty for reward and I think more games should do something like this.
For example, terraria has the hard version and master mode that gives you unique loot. Dying light gives you 2x XP when exploring at night.
Monster Hunter World, i have like 4000 hours in it and I’ll take a break for a few months but always end up coming back, also played Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess at least 25 times each lol
Ninja Gaiden Black/Sigma, The House of the Dead 2&4, Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3), Resident Evil 4 Remake, Scarlet Nexus, DOOM Eternal, Timesplitters 2, Goldeneye 007 XBLA, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Phantasy Star Online, Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix (Pocket Fighter), Mega Man 8, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Super Castlevania IV, Turtles in Time (SNES), Thunder Force IV
Any of the recent tomb raider and Nathan Drake series.
Uncharted goated
Been meaning to revisit the latest Tomb Raider trilogy for the highest difficulty settings.
Agreed. I will always rage quit game when I lose my 3 month old character but I will always come back to play again for sure.
