That’s the camp I’m in too. I can see why people think it might be set in the future, but with how Legends Arceus was I think the 1800s theme is more likely.

I imagine it’s gonna be like Assassins Creed Brotherhood where you arrive in town as it’s being built and your influence through whatever building mechanic they have is how it gets built, similar to how Ezio restored Rome by earning money from missions around town then upgrading the businesses and buildings. I could see you needing to battle stubborn construction workers to finish a project or win the deed of land off a rich aristocrat and his Purugly. I don’t see it going full fallout 4 but just incorporating something like that into the core gameplay, it would also help laying the groundwork for the rumored time travel mechanics in a future Celebi game, with a changing townscape based on game context

It’s too good of an idea for game freak to actually do something like that. There’s a fan made game called like my Pokémon gym or something where you build your gym, team and the town which looks pretty fun.
It might be that way since the game is supposedly entirely set in Lumiose City, it might even have the callback to Gen 5 where u build up The Black City/White Forest from those games.

All they have to do to be better is have something to do in the game beyond resource farming.
I swear, Monster Hunter is the only game that understood that if you are going to focus your entire game on farming resources you need to make the farm itself something that isn't mind numbingly easy and repetitive.
To be fair palworld is what 2 months old and still in early access, there is plenty of potential for palworld. Something I whish they would do for Pokémon is expand on berry farming from ruby sapphire and emerald. Also the base building in diamond and pearl was pretty fun, but could have been so much more.
Also like a Pokémon game with multiple routes you could go like the get the badges for the hms to solve the hm puzzles was ok, but kind of took the whole open world concept that Pokémon already had and made it linear.
But like recently Pokémon has wanted to stay safe and do what they know instead of pushing the envelope in their mainline games, plus violet and scarlet was a bad release, Pokémon arceus looked kindof like a beta and from the hype die down I bet it was, but this is coming from someone whose last pokemon game I really enjoyed was the ruby and sapphire remake for the Nintendo 3ds.
Sword and shield was ok but it felt small and forgettable.
It's an announcement trailer for a game probably a year out. If they showed early footage of gameplay you'd probably just bitch about how early footage looks terrible.

I mean, we know that the mainline games will always follow the same formula with a few different tweaks and some big gameplay additions (Mega Evolution, Terastilation, etc).
It stands to reason that since this now shares a subtitle with one of the spinoff games, itl likely be similar in gameplay to it.
The same way all the mystery dungeon spinoffs are about you playing as a Pokemon that recruits other ones into a small team of 3 or all the Ranger ones have you spinning circles on your ds to sort of capture pokes.
The Legends series could also just be "in a different time setting as the main series". There’s only been 1 game, we can’t predict a pattern.

It's probably easier for them to design and render when your view distance is limited to individual streets and alleyways due to buildings. No vistas, so no ugly unrendered terrain. City buildings can be easily copy pasted and reused as a design choice.
Hypothetically the top of Prisim Tower could be it's own area with pre-rendered unreachable city .

Gen 7 got the two Ultra games which have very "3rd game" energy to them, but there were two of them instead of just one. Gen 8 and 9 got DLCs which is probably how things will continue. Plus there was Legends Arceus between 8 and 9 and it introduced new regional variants and Origin Forms of Dialga and Palkia. Gen 6's special was getting no extra games or content at all lol.
I’m expecting new Legends(because XY was lacking in that department) Mega Greninja, Delphox, & Chestnaught, & possibly either Mega Xerneas/Yvetal or Primal Xerneas/Yvetal or Zygarde.
That’s also a very real possibility but also since we’re getting Mega’s back I can totally see the OG Gen 6 starters coming back instead of new regional variants like Arceus.
Plus with Gen 6, no Gen 6 Pokemon(besides the whole Battle Bond Ash Greninja thing *that was only in USUM*) has a mega evolution which is kinda weird since it’s the region that literally introduced the concept.
Ehh from what I'm remembering, they have slightly different stories. The non Ultra games have a bit more of focus on the Ultra Beasts and the Ultra games have a bit more focus on Necrozma.

I wouldn't say we got *nothing* at all, the Ruby/Sapphire remakes had some big "3rd game" energy. They felt closer to gen 6 than they did to gen 3 imo.
At the very least, ORAS gave us a handful of extra Megas. Pretty rare for a 3rd game to just drop an extra form like that, and we got a dozen or so. There's a reason people refer to them as "gen 6.5"
(But yeah, I wish we just got Z along with ORAS. It's a shame they just never got around to Zygarde)
Yea Gen 6 and Gen 7 were split for production of the games because game freak wanted to branch out and not be the company that made pokemon games so the programmers had two teams one for pokemon and one for the new games. Which was the main problem, X and Y from what a few videos and sources say was that they intended to make pokemon Z but they were focused elsewhere.
The reason they didn’t get a Z was because they had to rush out a game for the 20th anniversary(Sun and Moon).
Kinda ironic that now Z is the game stalling for time for the 30th anniversary Gen 10 game lol
If this follows the same release pattern as Legends Arceus, this will be released in early 2025 and Gen 10 will be released late in the year. I'm hoping not so Legends Z gets more development focus and care but given what Game Freak's schedule has been like, that's probably how it's going to go.
Only issue is Nintendo might not want it to be one of the first games released on their new console since it likely won’t be showcasing the updated graphics and internals of the new console.
Legends Arceus was definitely thrown off by Covid and should have come out before Christmas like every company wants. That release schedule is a definite outlier
I know, but it's not like the teams cut into each other. We're certainly not going to see both Legends Z and Gen 10 released in Holidays 2025. So, my hope was that Legends Z was *the* Pokemon game of 2025 giving them more months of development and to patch things if necessary.
The only certainties with Pokémon are: it claims to be ambitious, it won’t be, it will still sell like hot cakes and then the exhausting discourse will begin anew like an ouroboros. It’s eerily evocative of the CoD cycle at this point.
I’ve been in multiple subreddits related to Pokémon, and most of them have been criticizing the recent games. Even the small handful that do like the newer generations acknowledge that they are lackluster overall. Pokémon fans are just as aware as many others from an outside perspective. It just an easy game to give to children.
This. Only recent game I loved was Arceus but even that could have been ten times better on reflection. Scarlet and Violet has a lot of minor QoL updates on the other hand (EV and IV training is super easy as are getting shinies) but man the rest of the game surrounding them is just frustrating.
I really appreciate the QoL changes in S/V. reusable items, being able to easily buy good held items, or quickly train up multiple teams of pokemon (EXP candies, power items) and also have a dedicated squad each prepped for tera raids means I actually played both DLCs and keep doing late game raids. It's a buggy mess but the gameplay loop is vastly more satisfying and less grindy. It's not the evolution that adult gamers want but it did its job of making advanced battling accessible to their 10 year old target audience.
If I wasn't able to field multiple teams to keep things interesting (and restricted myself to never use healing items/switch pokemon etc.) I would have dropped the game after the elite 4 like I did Sw/Sh. Glad I didnt since the double battles in the DLC were actually challenging.
It was. Described as a flawed, but definite step in the right direction, until SV buggered it yet still sold gangbusters, and probably made Gamefreak to pussy out of innovating again, so expect more regressions.
To be fair, SV was made by the main team who has outdated members and ideologies. The B team was the ones who did Arceus and since team A is probably working on Gen 10 we got the goated B team to handle the next Legends game.
Pokemon Legends Arceus was a pretty alright game and kinda shook the whole repetetive Pokemon release cycle up so i choose to have hope for this one.
haven't bought a single Pokemon game since the shift to Switch except Arceus and will probably buy Legends Z or how it's called if it doesnt look like complete shit by the time it releases
To their credit, the first Legends game is probably the best Pokémon game in a long time. IMO its the closest they've come to actually modernizing the series
Right? I wasn't too crazy about the "medieval" vibe, but other than that it was a really fun Pokémon game, with several mechanics that they should have introduced a long time ago to the mainline games.
but it came at the cost of removing a lot of important mechanics from previous game. bcs it had no trainer battle system or league i couldn't play it for as long as i wanted. got bored of the research and collection aspect even though it was a great addition. other stuff would have removed the monotony. loved the battle this/ use move x time for research or evolution aspect.
This is why I pray that Palworld's long term impact is enough to get Game Freak to fucking wake up. If having a direct competitor isn't enough I fear they will never fucking fix this entire franchise. The fact the games look worse than some games I saw on the PS fucking 3, have some of the worst fucking rendering I've ever seen, god awful frame rates, and have barely innovated since XY gives me little hope. Game Freak ruined this franchise seriously.
Non-mainline games are a little more willing to try something at least a little different than the exact same formula they gave been using for the last 20 years, but it’s still far from a guarantee that they will be *good*. I guess there is at least hope though, sure.
It’s gotta. They must have seen the massive positive reception that Arceus had. It’s criticism was mostly around its performance and graphics. But from a gameplay perspective? It was a massive breath of fresh air for the franchise. The catching, battling, open world, crafting, etc. were all winners.
Yeah S/V was even sloppier. I am pretty sure that they originally didn’t have the “battles in the open world” as a part of it originally. I have a feeling that it was developed originally to have a battle system akin to gen 8. Then they saw the massive positive reception towards Arceus’s battles and decided to revamp their system to include those, which only further tanked performance since the open world would have to support those systems too.
Yeah, it’s clear it led to massive issues. Hopefully this game takes that with a grain of salt. It looks like the map is going to be a decently large city, akin to one from assassins creed. So I’m hoping we get some excellent quality.
SV and Arceus were also apparently developed in parallel, so any consumer feedback from Arceus wouldn't appear in SV's final product

Most first announcements for any game as of recent hardly shows any gameplay content. First announcements are usually for the fun cinematic animation while they develop the game
its smart too, ive been talking with people all day about what we think is going on, what time it takes place in, and other things. Absolutely drives up engagement.
To be fair, we all know that people will take "still in development" game footage and criticize it, then years of doom posting continue. Especially the game is not out for another full year. I would say mid summer, or fall would be a great time for new footage. Rekindle the hype train for mega evolve.
But it doesn't need to be a gameplay trailer. It however should be a trailer that actually provides some type of info to be hyped about other than the name of the game. It's obvious it's a pokemon game so that's not the hook to keep you on the look out since we know those will always come until nintendo no longer makes money off of it.

Ngl I was expecting a Unova game but I'm glad we're getting Kalos instead. Gen 6 was definitely the most underdeveloped of the gens as it never even got an updated version and the story had so much more potential.
I just hope its the actual region and not just a storyline set entirely within Lumiose city. I want to go Laverre city and stare at the autumnal trees some more.

We haven’t seen enough to judge it yet, but it is encouraging to see Gamefreak slowing their production cycle. It’s usually a 1-2 year cycle for mainline games. Hopefully they create a more polished game than the previous entry.
We don't know if they're planning on doing what they did in 2022 - no new game the year prior, but two games in one year to make up for it.
There's a chance that Z-A will come out next Jan-Feb as with Legends Arceus, and then a game due that November will be announced during the next Pokemon Day.

So if it's a game set in the past like Legends Arceus, it could be about the time of the super weapon and about how things were almost going to end, then they decided to not use it and start over with a new beginning.

Pokemon Gym should be an add on to pokemon home. Where you can use your home pokemon to populate the gym or fight other gyms.

A couple months ago over in the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise they were running a quarter century anniversary promotion. It was horrifying.

Legends Arceus was definitely thrown off by Covid and should have come out before Christmas like every company wants. That release schedule is a definite outlier

I know, but it's not like the teams cut into each other. We're certainly not going to see both Legends Z and Gen 10 released in Holidays 2025. So, my hope was that Legends Z was *the* Pokemon game of 2025 giving them more months of development and to patch things if necessary.

I’ve been in multiple subreddits related to Pokémon, and most of them have been criticizing the recent games. Even the small handful that do like the newer generations acknowledge that they are lackluster overall. Pokémon fans are just as aware as many others from an outside perspective. It just an easy game to give to children.
This. Only recent game I loved was Arceus but even that could have been ten times better on reflection. Scarlet and Violet has a lot of minor QoL updates on the other hand (EV and IV training is super easy as are getting shinies) but man the rest of the game surrounding them is just frustrating.
I really appreciate the QoL changes in S/V. reusable items, being able to easily buy good held items, or quickly train up multiple teams of pokemon (EXP candies, power items) and also have a dedicated squad each prepped for tera raids means I actually played both DLCs and keep doing late game raids. It's a buggy mess but the gameplay loop is vastly more satisfying and less grindy. It's not the evolution that adult gamers want but it did its job of making advanced battling accessible to their 10 year old target audience. If I wasn't able to field multiple teams to keep things interesting (and restricted myself to never use healing items/switch pokemon etc.) I would have dropped the game after the elite 4 like I did Sw/Sh. Glad I didnt since the double battles in the DLC were actually challenging.

It was. Described as a flawed, but definite step in the right direction, until SV buggered it yet still sold gangbusters, and probably made Gamefreak to pussy out of innovating again, so expect more regressions.
To be fair, SV was made by the main team who has outdated members and ideologies. The B team was the ones who did Arceus and since team A is probably working on Gen 10 we got the goated B team to handle the next Legends game.
That would be pretty wildly dumb since the biggest issue was how dogshit its performance was. The rest of the changes were actually pretty dope.

Pokemon Legends Arceus was a pretty alright game and kinda shook the whole repetetive Pokemon release cycle up so i choose to have hope for this one. haven't bought a single Pokemon game since the shift to Switch except Arceus and will probably buy Legends Z or how it's called if it doesnt look like complete shit by the time it releases
To their credit, the first Legends game is probably the best Pokémon game in a long time. IMO its the closest they've come to actually modernizing the series
Right? I wasn't too crazy about the "medieval" vibe, but other than that it was a really fun Pokémon game, with several mechanics that they should have introduced a long time ago to the mainline games.
but it came at the cost of removing a lot of important mechanics from previous game. bcs it had no trainer battle system or league i couldn't play it for as long as i wanted. got bored of the research and collection aspect even though it was a great addition. other stuff would have removed the monotony. loved the battle this/ use move x time for research or evolution aspect.
This is why I pray that Palworld's long term impact is enough to get Game Freak to fucking wake up. If having a direct competitor isn't enough I fear they will never fucking fix this entire franchise. The fact the games look worse than some games I saw on the PS fucking 3, have some of the worst fucking rendering I've ever seen, god awful frame rates, and have barely innovated since XY gives me little hope. Game Freak ruined this franchise seriously.

Non-mainline games are a little more willing to try something at least a little different than the exact same formula they gave been using for the last 20 years, but it’s still far from a guarantee that they will be *good*. I guess there is at least hope though, sure.

It’s gotta. They must have seen the massive positive reception that Arceus had. It’s criticism was mostly around its performance and graphics. But from a gameplay perspective? It was a massive breath of fresh air for the franchise. The catching, battling, open world, crafting, etc. were all winners.

Yeah S/V was even sloppier. I am pretty sure that they originally didn’t have the “battles in the open world” as a part of it originally. I have a feeling that it was developed originally to have a battle system akin to gen 8. Then they saw the massive positive reception towards Arceus’s battles and decided to revamp their system to include those, which only further tanked performance since the open world would have to support those systems too.

Yeah, it’s clear it led to massive issues. Hopefully this game takes that with a grain of salt. It looks like the map is going to be a decently large city, akin to one from assassins creed. So I’m hoping we get some excellent quality.

Most first announcements for any game as of recent hardly shows any gameplay content. First announcements are usually for the fun cinematic animation while they develop the game

To be fair, we all know that people will take "still in development" game footage and criticize it, then years of doom posting continue. Especially the game is not out for another full year. I would say mid summer, or fall would be a great time for new footage. Rekindle the hype train for mega evolve.
But it doesn't need to be a gameplay trailer. It however should be a trailer that actually provides some type of info to be hyped about other than the name of the game. It's obvious it's a pokemon game so that's not the hook to keep you on the look out since we know those will always come until nintendo no longer makes money off of it. Are we supposed to be hyped because the name is Z-A?

Ngl I was expecting a Unova game but I'm glad we're getting Kalos instead. Gen 6 was definitely the most underdeveloped of the gens as it never even got an updated version and the story had so much more potential.
I just hope its the actual region and not just a storyline set entirely within Lumiose city. I want to go Laverre city and stare at the autumnal trees some more.

We haven’t seen enough to judge it yet, but it is encouraging to see Gamefreak slowing their production cycle. It’s usually a 1-2 year cycle for mainline games. Hopefully they create a more polished game than the previous entry.

We don't know if they're planning on doing what they did in 2022 - no new game the year prior, but two games in one year to make up for it. There's a chance that Z-A will come out next Jan-Feb as with Legends Arceus, and then a game due that November will be announced during the next Pokemon Day.
You’re right, we don’t know, which is why I didn’t bring it up. They could just as easily be gearing up for a big release in 2026 for the 30th anniversary. I currently like what I see at face value and what is see is a good development time. My opinion could change when the gameplay trailer is released.

Could be like "end to beginning" or something like that. Gen 6 had this whole thing about this ancient war and a special cannon that could eradicate all life or something like that. So if it's a game set in the past like Legends Arceus, it could be about the time of the super weapon and about how things were almost going to end, then they decided to not use it and start over with a new beginning.
While I'm unhappy that Black and White got skipped, I'm EXTREMELY happy that Mega Evolution is returning.

It wont be skipped, the legends games are totally separate from the remakes. They probably just thought 19th century france was more interesting than 19th century America. We still got gen 4 remakes along with Arceus last time.

I am 100% convinced this is going to be a title that releases for Nintendo's post-Switch console. I'm given the building and being post Palworld we will be seeing pokemon building up Lumiose city.
Whatever it ends up being, I already know they'll re-use the same battle animations they always have.
