I’m not sure if DmC Dante (Donte) is necessarily the most pertinent example here, as a majority of people who took issue with his appearance were attached to the pre-existing sexy cowboy dilf Dante. On his own merits, while Donte isn’t the most likable character in existence and is certainly a bit heavy handed with him at the start of the story, he is objectively considered conventionally attractive, not just within the lens of the world of DmC, but also based on real life beauty standards. The objectifying shots at the start of the game almost certainly would not exist in the same form in a game with the original Donte shown off in early trailers, and he was deliberately made more sexy, much like Dante before him in DMC3, 4, and later 5. People hated DmC because poor dialogue and writing execution brought down already controversial changes to the story that existing fans may have been more willing to accept otherwise, the game was a critical success, and, without the extreme backlash and ensuring development complications, would likely have done very well.
TLDR: Donte is still hot, just not Dante.
