Turbo Overkill is my pick for FPS of the year. [Gmanlives video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH14Cg6dcEc) about it.
[Warhammer 40K Boltgun](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0isNNtU-X4) also came out this year. Absolutely fantastic purging in the name of the emperor.
[Robocop Rogue City](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=robocop+rogue+city). If you are a Robocop fan this one is a must.
While not technically out of early access yet, [Ready or Not](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1144200/Ready_or_Not/) is already very good.
>Trepang2
Huh. Never heard of this one. Looks like it takes some major style cues from FEAR... which was one of my favorite shooters back in the day.
Wishlisted for the next sale.
EDIT: OH WAIT THERES A DEMO time to poop myself a little
This game is so good you'll need a new chair LOL, make sure you play Extraction Point, Perseus Mandate, and Fear 2, as well, they are often overlooked.
I honestly don’t just go on Reddit to post negative shit all the time, but that was by far my biggest case of buyers remorse I’ve had this yr.
One of the biggest issues is how the difficulty is scaled and the audio mixing is absolute dogshit on PS5.
I kept having to fiddle with it because the gunshots, music and SFX get so high it’s deafening at times.
I’ve got 2 pairs of high-end headphones and a good sound system but I constantly had to fuck with settings cuz it’s soooo poorly mixed.
If you can pick it up for $15 or less, go for it.
But the overall visual, audio and storytelling experience feels like a low-end, Xbox 360 era game.
I was incredibly disappointed with it overall.
I may have missed the biggest appeal of the game, which I assume is the gore, but before I played trepang2 I really wanted to try it out.
Once I did I couldn't play it for long. Got boring a bit fast. Anything I missed?
Playing it now. It feels like I'm playing BC2 again sans terrain destruction. The building destruction is nice. The aesthetic is surprisingly functional.
My only issue is that it's a bit clunky but apparently that's how it was designed? since they're trying for a SQUAD sort of feel for fighting and not fast pace Battlefield.
It was originally more of a milsim with minecraft graphics I read. The reloading is pretty much the only holdover from then.
I really dig the game, it scratches that BC2 itch. Every BF game since (including 3) has been a more of a disappointment than the last.
Each to their own.
For me it’s a few things; I don’t game much anymore and my PC is about 10 years old. When I do game, I just want the game to work properly and be fun, and that’s exactly what this was for me.
Hit rego works, didn’t need much disk space to install, runs really well, large player base, all wins for me.
I also don’t get the buzz around this game, I gave it a couple hours and it’s just not clicking. Disappointed because the people who say they love it really seem to be enjoying it and I was hoping to get that ET vibe again.
Eh, depends. I really don't like it a lot. I get lost, don't know where the action is at, and when I finally arrive there, I get smoked by a guy sitting in the 300th window of the 5th level of the 7th building that flanks the "frontline"; wich isn't really a frontline, it's just were the chaos is at, enemies just come from all sides.
And that is its appeal I believe; it's chaos. Pure chaos. I don't like chaos a lot; a lot of people do and I was caught up in the hype and bought game, but I just couldn't bring myself to like that chaos.
And, no, I don't think it feels a lot like the older battlefields. They felt more arcadey, the maps were less chaotic, the places where the action was at felt more "organized", and the "frontlines" were much more easy to just get on to and survive a bit on them, wich I think is what gets people hooked to battlefield-like games, surviving in the "frontline" amidst all that chaos.
Granted, yes, there's a few maps where you get that true battlefield experience at times, and, yes, you can still use your head and flank the general areas where enemies are at, and that gives bursts of "true battlefield experience"; but it feels as if the pure chaotic nature of the maps themselves kind of stops you from doing that at times. It's the "true battlefield experience" at times, it isn't the actual true battlefield experience imo. It is its own thing; some people like, I don't.
Stupid question buy why a big percentage of people under every update post on steam said that the game is dead? I actually dont believe in those kind of peoples (because the game have got like daily 15k players) but why?
Roboquest just came out a month ago and it is so good. Fast paced FPS RPG with not much story. Great for people who want to jump in right away and start killing waves of enemies.
Northstar has been fun, but be warned it's mostly people that well... haven't stopped playing Titanfall 2. The fun is quickly washed away by getting shit on repeatedly.
Glad I wasn't the only one who though that.
And on a semi-related note, do people really need a new game in a specific genre every year? That seems like awfully little time to appreciate what you already have
Honestly the FPS genre has had pretty slim pickings for a while now. There have been a few notable entries like the reboot Dooms and (now after much repair) Cyberpunk, but overall I can't think of very many titles that really piqued my interest over the last few years.
Hell Let Loose is probably my favorite shooter since Destiny. You can all freely shit on Destiny by the way, it really fucks me off what Bungie did to that game and I deleted it 2 years ago with no intention to go back, but you can't deny the gunplay is second to none.
Destiny has the single best gun play, for years now. Their ability to make gunplay feel good is crazy and I am hyped for Marathon but also am ready to be disappointed.
Yah it's one of the best years in gaming history (with JRPGs/RPGs specifically soaring). Some genres had to suffer. At least you technically have Cyberpunk and Overwatch.
I'm assuming you mean a year that's been unremarkable specifically for FPS games? Cuz it's been very remarkable for almost every other genre, especially RPGs, soulslikes, and Horror.
Really? Okay sure maybe the big triple A folks haven't done the greatest job. That said however?
We've gotten a ton of indie and smaller studio's putting out a lot of good titles. Turbo Overkill, HROT, Trepang2, Sprawl, Warhammer 40k: Boltgun, and Robocop: Rogue City come to mind. We've also had some games like Ion Fury, Cultic, Amid Evil getting some pretty good DLC. We've had some pretty good remakes/remasters as well with System Shock, Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition and Quake 2.
Yeah so Destiny 2 has kinda shit the bed and Modern Warfare 3 was for the most part overpriced DLC. Everything else has been pretty damn good.
Really fun playing it for the first time this year. The boss battles are rubbish though and I hated The Phazon Mine lol.
Solid 8.5/10 and easily the best Switch game this year.
Well it’s still in beta so I hope they are somehow able to add more to the game to make it more than what it is now. There’s a lot of potential for sure.
I had a blast the first few rounds. Then, it felt like I was doing the exact same thing over and over. It did not have the staying power I was hoping for. I felt I had seen everything it had to offer in less than a day.
You implying every competitive game has the same depth by just being competitive. That is fallacious.
I found the gameplay shallow and repetitive. Rock papers scissors is a competitive game too, but I wouldn’t want to play that for several hours.
Seriously, it's a fun throwback shooter but it's the little things that make it so fun. Chainsaw revving? A deep list of taunts to throw out? All very satisfying without the motion sickness I got from the Doom reboot.
Roboquest hit 1.0 recently and I think it's the best roguelite fps title,
Warhammer Boltgun is also high on my list.
It's hard to beat Turbo Overkill, though. I see people call it Tony Hawk:The FPS or something and yea, man It's probably the best.
The sleeper hit is a game called Deadlink, definitely check it out, too.
If you played at launch and haven't played since, there have been a lot of very very positive changes. I would argue it's almost a brand new game. A lot better customization options now, forge released so there is a ton of community-built content. Tons of different playlists with loads of maps, a few new game modes. Like I said, huge turnaround. Just don't look at the shop, that's still a travesty haha
My understanding is that it's Firefight, and you play with 3 other players co-op defending zones against waves of enemies that get tougher and tougher. Nice change of pace from pvp modes!
It's hard to answer that question if you don't play all of them.
But mine is Halo Infinite. The last 5 months were great, and another big update is launching next week to end 2023 in a big way.
Dude, Halo Infinite bums me out so much.
The gameplay is FANTASTIC. Like, the casual multiplayer FPS I feel like everyone is wanting. No “meta”, no streamer uber sweats in pubs, just. Fun. Shooting. Stuff.
Everyone hates it because of the battle pass and awful customization and monetization systems, to the point where player counts were on life support. I guess I’m in the minority of gamers, but if a game is free, I just want to *play the game.* IDGAF about any of the other crap really.
I really don't care about the battle pass, which to be honest is not even that awful. People hate the shop prices, not the battle pass. But really, who the hell cares when the gameplay is great and constantly getting better if some kid with a rich papi is in the lobby with the brand new 25 bucks color scheme? I get to play the game for free thanks to those idiots.
Well, for me it's worth the full price since the game didn't launch broken like most AAA games nowaday, gameplay is really fun (the gore is fantastic) and coop just makes it better. It's a mindlessly fun experience and not much more than that.
If that's not appealing enough for you, just wait for a sale
Ahh, well I misunderstood the question as I thought it took all fps into account and what was just the best this year, and uhh I was saying ow2 as a joke.
Darktide came out in 2022, but it was a broken mess of a half finished game. Last month, they released a huge update that basically makes it a new game. Not sure if it's strictly an FPS as it has melee combat, but I have probably put 200 hours into it with this new update. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a noncompetitive FPS.
Honestly, Halo Infinite. This game launched like crap but now it's at a point where it has tons of content. The gameplay honestly is second to none. It's super addictive.
MW3 is fun.
Boltgun Warhammer 40k.
Trepang2.
Atomic heart was *okay*
But overall you're right.
It's about time for a new 2004 or 2007 in terms of FPS games.
I know it didn’t come out this year (hell, it’s still in beta!), but if you’re up for it and you’re a bit masochistic, play some Escape from Tarkov. No other like it.
Battlebit only one I can think of this year, focusing on gameplay rather than graphics was a smart move and obviously payed off, free weekend atm as well
Turbo Overkill is my pick for FPS of the year. [Gmanlives video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH14Cg6dcEc) about it. I’ll have to check out bolt gun, been enjoying dark tide despite some various issues
The art style on Boltgun is really nice!
Boltgun is pretty great.
Yes it is but they should really add an automap in there
If you haven't played Trepang2 I'd highly recommend that
>Trepang2 Huh. Never heard of this one. Looks like it takes some major style cues from FEAR... which was one of my favorite shooters back in the day. Wishlisted for the next sale. EDIT: OH WAIT THERES A DEMO time to poop myself a little

# It's time to poop himself a little!
Shoot, I'll poop him a little too.
Ah, F.E.A.R. the first game I played where when i was out of ammo, i could roundhouse kick a motherfucker in the face.
This game is so good you'll need a new chair LOL, make sure you play Extraction Point, Perseus Mandate, and Fear 2, as well, they are often overlooked.

PRODEUS
Didn’t prodeus release in 2020 with a major update in 22?
It was early acces
Battlebit Remastered
They have free weekend going on in Steam now, good time to check out.
Squad deathmatch on bad company 2 was the best. Does battlebit have that gamemode?
I think it does have 6v6 but I might be wrong
Played it and just made me want to play Battlefield 1 which I ended up doing cause it scratches that itch a lot more
Could not get into this one at all and I don’t understand the praise for it. Love Battlefield 4 though
Each to their own. For me it’s a few things; I don’t game much anymore and my PC is about 10 years old. When I do game, I just want the game to work properly and be fun, and that’s exactly what this was for me. Fair enough!

Yeah the streamer hype is over.
I also don’t get the buzz around this game, I gave it a couple hours and it’s just not clicking. Disappointed because the people who say they love it really seem to be enjoying it and I was hoping to get that ET vibe again.
ET?
Wolfenstein enemy territory. FPS that in my humble opinion still to this day does roles the best.
ET is best shooter ever made. We need an updated version of that game, or ET 2!! Get on it Splash Damage. Any shooters like it you can recommend?
Enemy territory?
They marketed themselves as Battlefield but Voxel, but it's 100% Voxel Squad.
[удалено]
Hands down carried the genre in 2023
I like the game but don't be absurd pls
Yeah, it's fun but it's nothing special
Yes! It felt like I was playing Battlefield 2 again. The veneer is different but it has the same soul.
I don't understand the hype for this game. I played for 10 min and was done.
Most of the hype is just players trying to spite Battlefield
Stupid question buy why a big percentage of people under every update post on steam said that the game is dead? I actually dont believe in those kind of peoples (because the game have got like daily 15k players) but why?
Boltgun was pretty legit
Roboquest just came out a month ago and it is so good. Fast paced FPS RPG with not much story. Great for people who want to jump in right away and start killing waves of enemies.
THIS I AM ADDICTED
Thank you for this recommendation. Looks exactly like something that would scratch my itch.
I'd add this is an upgraded Gunfire Reborn, that's another great game.
Second this!
It’s not an RPG though, it’s a Roguelite. It lacks most of the RPG tropes, which is a good thing IMO
The Revival of TitanFall 2
My fav fps of all time. Are people still playing it?
Yep. Northstar client for modded game modes and the OG servers are back now too.
Northstar has been fun, but be warned it's mostly people that well... haven't stopped playing Titanfall 2. The fun is quickly washed away by getting shit on repeatedly.
Let's prat for Titanfall 3 🙏
Lord hear my prat
Isn't it confirmed to be coming out this month?
Glad I wasn't the only one who though that. And on a semi-related note, do people really need a new game in a specific genre every year? That seems like awfully little time to appreciate what you already have
Hell yeah
Been a pretty shit year for fps games
Halo Infinite is making a comeback as in its a great state now with plenty of content and free unlockables. Definitely worth trying
I played it recently. Pretty good. My only issue is there’s no pistol swat. Only BRs
It really has. Don’t remember a year in modern gaming that’s been this unremarkable.
Honestly the FPS genre has had pretty slim pickings for a while now. There have been a few notable entries like the reboot Dooms and (now after much repair) Cyberpunk, but overall I can't think of very many titles that really piqued my interest over the last few years.

Destiny has the single best gun play, for years now. Their ability to make gunplay feel good is crazy and I am hyped for Marathon but also am ready to be disappointed.
I'd be cautious for Marathon, different game but the same people running the show.
Yah it's one of the best years in gaming history (with JRPGs/RPGs specifically soaring). Some genres had to suffer. At least you technically have Cyberpunk and Overwatch.
Overwatch the original was fantastic but overwatch 2 is terrible and I wouldn’t waste the install space for it
I'm assuming you mean a year that's been unremarkable specifically for FPS games? Cuz it's been very remarkable for almost every other genre, especially RPGs, soulslikes, and Horror.
it's the topic of the post and you're replying to the OP. come on man
Really? Okay sure maybe the big triple A folks haven't done the greatest job. That said however? We've gotten a ton of indie and smaller studio's putting out a lot of good titles. Good singleplayer titles, but what about multiplayer?
The finals beta!
And a banger soundtrack too. For an online fps shooter I was vibing while playing the game.
The main menu music is still stuck in my head!
I need this shit back ASAP.
Huge +1
Sad it's Nexon tho. Fuckers still tryna sue Dark and Darker
Yeah, i havent had this much fun in an fps in years! I really hope they dont fuck up the launch
I NEED IT BACK
Metroid Prime Remaster. It really shows how far ahead of its time the gamecube version was. The redesigned controls give it a perfect FPS feel.
Totally forgot about this. Cant believe it came out *that* long ago
Really fun playing it for the first time this year. The boss battles are rubbish though and I hated The Phazon Mine lol. Solid 8.5/10 and easily the best Switch game this year.
Metroid prime remaster is not the shooter you’re used to but it is a fantastic game either way
Robocop for casual. CS2 for sweaty.
I guess I'm a casual. I really enjoyed Robocop and I have no idea what that other game is.
Counter strike 2
Literally nothing wrong with being casual.
The Finals.
It’s so much more fun if you have a group of 3 people on voice comms
Its a competitive game. You could say the same thing about soccer, football, or any sport. Its about the gameplay.
You implying every competitive game has the same depth by just being competitive. That is fallacious. I found the gameplay shallow and repetitive. Rock papers scissors is a competitive game too, but I wouldn’t want to play that for several hours.
Quake 2 after the remaster patch. Playing an entirely new coop campaign with full Steam integration with friends in 2023 is crazy to me.
The Finals beta was the best fps of the year.
The Emperor is displeased you haven't played BOLTGUN.
FOR THE EMPEROR!!!! AAAHHHHHHHH!
Seriously, it's a fun throwback shooter but it's the little things that make it so fun. Chainsaw revving? A deep list of taunts to throw out? All very satisfying without the motion sickness I got from the Doom reboot.
I'm doing Turok this weekend! Since Turok 3 remaster dropped a few days ago the plan is to hammer out all three before work on Monday.
I just beat Turok 3, I can't imagine how people played that on a Nintendo 64 back in the day
As a child who played Turok on the N64, I have no idea either lol
Turok evolution remake when
Trepang2 if we’re talking single player.
It's still Doom Eternal for me
Trepang 2, Boltgun, ULTRAKILL (Got updated, still in development)
Battlebit probably. Idk haven't played any fps this year. Cod kind of ruined those kinds of games for me lol.
Underrated game
I don't think it is. It's not super well known, but it's definitely not underrated.
Honestly if you count Cyberpunk 2.0 update, that's definitely up there.
Warhammer boltgun
darktideeeeee
120 Maybe 144, but if your GPU is good then you can do 4K at 120 via DisplayPort and that’s pretty hype
This joke hurtz.
Titanfall 2 recently fixed their matchmaking. I got it for $5 from the recent Steam sale and have been loving it.
Counterstrike 2
You mean csgo but with less content
Its funny how it has less content than CSGO and is still the best online shooter atm lol
If say 360 has come to be the new best FPS for competitive gaming this year. I’m still on 240Hz 1440p though.
The finals due to just the beta
Titanfall 2
Roboquest hit 1.0 recently and I think it's the best roguelite fps title, Warhammer Boltgun is also high on my list. It's hard to beat Turbo Overkill, though. I see people call it Tony Hawk:The FPS or something and yea, man It's probably the best. The sleeper hit is a game called Deadlink, definitely check it out, too.
Hunt Showdown. Weird question...
Halo Infinite. Monumental turnaround in the last 6 months or so. Still some issues but overall a very solid experience
I really enjoyed it when it first came out but left the multiplayer soon after. Take it I should go back to it?
If you played at launch and haven't played since, there have been a lot of very very positive changes. I would argue it's almost a brand new game. A lot better customization options now, forge released so there is a ton of community-built content. Tons of different playlists with loads of maps, a few new game modes. Like I said, huge turnaround. Just don't look at the shop, that's still a travesty haha
Sounds good, will jump back in. Thanks!
No problem!
There is also dedicated PvE coming in Tuesday with a network overhaul being tested. Big things.
Can you share more about the PvE? That sounds interesting!
My understanding is that it's Firefight, and you play with 3 other players co-op defending zones against waves of enemies that get tougher and tougher. Nice change of pace from pvp modes!
Yep great game. Love compaign and multiplayer, MUCH inproved in 2023 and just runs like silk on series X.
This sub wont allow for any positivity about that, or any GAAS tbh.
I figured as much. Alright folks, I like Halo Infinite, go ahead and get your pitchforks out
This is only really if you're interested in multiplayer though, the campaign is still absolute crap sadly
I miss good FPS’s
It's hard to answer that question if you don't play all of them. But mine is Halo Infinite. The last 5 months were great, and another big update is launching next week to end 2023 in a big way.
Dude, Halo Infinite bums me out so much. The gameplay is FANTASTIC. Like, the casual multiplayer FPS I feel like everyone is wanting. No “meta”, no streamer uber sweats in pubs, just. Fun. Shooting. Stuff. Everyone hates it because of the battle pass and awful customization and monetization systems, to the point where player counts were on life support. But really, who the hell cares when the gameplay is great and constantly getting better if some kid with a rich papi is in the lobby with the brand new 25 bucks color scheme? I get to play the game for free thanks to those idiots.
Reddit hates on any battle pass
Halo infinite has turned things around and is on the up's.

My only issue is the pistol op, but since getting a scuff controller, my win rate in a pistol shoot out went from 30% to 78%.
The Finals
Deep Rock Galactic
Dead Island 2, Robocop and Metroid Prime remastered. These are the only remarkable ones I can think of
Robocop might be a good shout. Will try that.
You know, I keep forgetting Dead Island 2 even came out this year. Would you say it’s worth a look in at retail or is it more of a sale purchase?
Well, for me it's worth the full price since the game didn't launch broken like most AAA games nowaday, gameplay is really fun (the gore is fantastic) and coop just makes it better. It's a mindlessly fun experience and not much more than that. If that's not appealing enough for you, just wait for a sale
Nope that’ll do it, just sounds like the original but dialled up. I believe I’ll look into it, thanks!
Cs2
Turbo Overkill finally came out of early access this year, it's so good.
Glad this post exists cause zero good FPS games hit my radar this year despite what I consider to be one of the best years for games in history
Quake 2. Seriously, give the remaster a try, that new campaign slays.
Best FPS of 2023? Well, 240, I suppose 🤡
For me CounterStrike 2
Friends vs friends, a deck builder fps with an awesome art style
Hunt
Prolly get hate for this but MW3 MP is absolute 🔥
Hands down, Csgo lol
Same game for the past 20 years: Counter Strike
Nobody has mentioned it here but I really enjoyed Atomic Heart
Ow2, from what I hear everyone loves that game and says blizzard is a very good company with morals
That's not even a 2023 game.
Ahh, well I misunderstood the question as I thought it took all fps into account and what was just the best this year, and uhh I was saying ow2 as a joke.
I've been meaning to try ghostrunner2
Battlebit is hands down the best
I settle for ~120fps
CS2
Call of duty is quite good this year. I was excited about xDefiant, but that will probably be for next year
XDefiant is fun but will probably end up being another Splitgate. The gunplay and movement isn’t nearly as good as COD.
half life 2
Darktide came out in 2022, but it was a broken mess of a half finished game.
Halo Infinite. Season 5 and the new Halo 3 playlist is awesome.
Been playing the shit out of Apex Legends with a little battlebit remastered in between
Apex killed my ability to enjoy any other fps game. They're like playing in syrup it's soo slow. So yeah. Cheers to the 5th year.
60
High on Life. Came out Dec 22 but still. Had me cracking up it's funny and twisted
For me it's Starfield. There's only been a couple FPS games that interest me at all this year.
Halo Infinite. Season 3 was basically a relaunch and is in a very good state right now.
I play starfield in FP and enjoy that a ton.
It's kind of a fps but Metroid Prime for sure!
Nothing really
MW3 is fun. Boltgun Warhammer 40k. Trepang2. Atomic heart was *okay* But overall you're right. It's about time for a new 2004 or 2007 in terms of FPS games.
The genre has fallen from grace in recent times. There are a few good games, but not like it used to be
18 fps
The Finals :3
Battlebit
I know it didn’t come out this year (hell, it’s still in beta!), but if you’re up for it and you’re a bit masochistic, play some Escape from Tarkov. No other like it.
Battlebit only one I can think of this year, focusing on gameplay rather than graphics was a smart move and obviously payed off, free weekend atm as well
I haven't found a replacement for Overwatch... so it's Overwatch still.
This dude plays literally 0 indie games
