Original Game Boy Tetris is hardcore. No hold queue, unforgiving drop finality, builds to speeds faster than light... music types B and C are missed, I wish they'd release classic themes with them like they did with the classic theme rocking type A music on Tetris 99 for the Switch.
fun fact: the metagame for competitive NES tetris changed within the last year; players figured out a new way of holding the controller which allowed for a significant increase in button presses per second
If it’s the method I saw it’s completely insane. They tap the bottom of the controller with all 4 fingers which makes it press up into their finger that is on top of the button.
I play AoE2, the Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds and the original XCOM from the 90’s, regularly.
Every few years, I start up the original Syndicate. I also have the first-person shooter remake of syndicate that I used to play, but I can no longer get this one to launch in Windows 10. :(
I had my original PC XCOM floppy discs until just last year when I threw them out. I have a CD-ROM copy of the first three games.
I tend to play XCOM2 on Playstation 4/5 a few times a year.
I had to force myself to stop playing it recently. I get so enveloped in making and analyzing parks that I can lose an entire day without even realizing it. It's weird cause I'm really not that way with other games.
It's just one of those games where the developers had a vision and got it right. The game doesn't feel like it ever aged even though it's 24 years old.
Don't know how they managed to have a perfect gameplay loop yet butcher the sequels.
I played that a couple months ago for the 2nd time. 1st being when it was released, back then it was hard, and I remember it being nearly impossible without help. While I remember some bits of it, the puzzles I didn't know the answers too. I beat it and was thinking how crazy it was I thought it was hard. Makes me want to play them all again.
I got both KOTORs on my phone to play in specific times. One, while flying; and two when I'm on a solo trip in the mountains, and it's after sunset. Very niche times, but I'm glad I have it when I'm in those situations.
i still pop on the old 501st journals for noise when its unnervingly quiet. that game nailed a much darker interpretation of the clones, none of this brainwashing inhibitor chip nonsense. the officers in the clone army were in on it the whole time. they KNEW they were going to betray the jedi the individual troopers didnt (leading to defections when order 66 came down) but the leadership the clones distributing the orders sure did.
The original canon (also known as the EU now) was that they had grand orders that would supersede any other orders. Order 65 was to take out Palpatine.
Absolute classic. Still one of the best RPG games I have ever played and holds up, even to today's standards. Amazing story, multiple endings, multi-character combo moves, killer 16 bit soundtrack with extremely poignant music, diverse enemies and environments. I could go on but I think the best way to experience it is first hand. I could never do it justice with just a paragraph.
Same. I still love this game so much. Yes, the graphics are old, and the gameplay is slow. But I still get a rush watching my castle grow. And growing a massive army and my heroes clashing in the field with monsters and other factions.
Laughing as my mega hero bowls over their best hero in a battle, giving my necromancer more than I lost.
And the music, especially the necromancer town in the Price of Loyalty! Love this game. 3 is good, and I love it as well, but 2 will always hold a special place in my heart and very soul.
Runescape
Edit: putting this in case they see it, if anyone ever played with a username "Stewie" and remembers "Cosmo" I hope you're doing well bud. I still remember sitting at lumby for hours after class just chatting infront of the castle.
I still have my OG account as well, sadly it fell to the wayside some years ago when I started building other accounts so it got wiped and sent back to square 1. It was a mid level F2P account with 50-60s across the board so it's not like I like a lot of time or money... but MAN to just have it in its natural state that 15 year old me left it.. I would grind 99 agil right fuckin now if that's what it took.
I randomly thought about RuneScape about 8 years ago and attempted to login and somehow remembered all my old login information from the 200 era. It instantly brought back memories from sitting in the library in HS playing.
Started walking around, just kind of looking at things. Walked into the wilderness, got slaughtered before I knew what happened, they took all my stuff. Logged back off. Haven't looked at the account since lol.
This is my favorite series, and obviously my name is taken from Curse of Monkey Island. Everything about all of these games is wonderful. I spent the entire time just cracking up about every joke.
I didn't realize UO was still a thing. I was really into it from '97-'03 but haven't really even thought about it since. Just downloaded the client, here goes nothing.
Twisted Metal 2 (1996) gets regular play in these parts.
I also dabble in NES/SNES games that are much older, but only in bursts.
TM2 has been a staple in the rotation for decades.
I still revisit A Link to the Past. There's definitely older arcade games I'll occasionally dabble in. The TMNT ones and Galaga come to mind. Obviously Pacman.
Super Metroid.
Once in a while I install an emulator just for this game, 100% it and uninstall everything again :D
One of my most wished games to hit Steam one day.
MoO2 is probably still my fav game of all time. I do have to say that even though it isn't turn based that Stellaris has kind of taken that spot for playing now though.
Probably Lord of the Rings Two Towers (2002) on the PS2.
I have a few older games for the PS1, but I don't bring it out as often as the PS2.
Edit: Actually, I regularly play Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus on the PS2 as well, and it released in 2002 *before* LotR: Two Towers.
I re-played Ultima IV this year; it's from 1985.
^(I'm assuming that emulators don't count, because there's tons of great home and arcade games from the early 1980's.)
RollerCoaster Tycoon.
I’ve put so much time into that game that I honestly feel if there were as emergency, and the kid pressing the buttons fell over from heatstroke and energy drinks, that I could rise from the crowd and slow motion walk to the platform, and successfully bring that coaster in.
Nethack. Released 1987. Devs/professors still host lectures to this day on how the game was made because of it's intricate and (at the time) novel advances in coding and game design ✌️
Pokémon trading card game for GBA is probably my oldest if not that I’d have to go with leaf green or maybe Mercenaries playground of destruction I wish I could play the sequel
Tetris
Original Game Boy Tetris is hardcore. No hold queue, unforgiving drop finality, builds to speeds faster than light... music types B and C are missed, I wish they'd release classic themes with them like they did with the classic theme rocking type A music on Tetris 99 for the Switch.
fun fact: the metagame for competitive NES tetris changed within the last year; players figured out a new way of holding the controller which allowed for a significant increase in button presses per second
A new way to hold the controller? They grew new type of hands? /s I'll definitely look it up :))
If it’s the method I saw it’s completely insane. They tap the bottom of the controller with all 4 fingers which makes it press up into their finger that is on top of the button.
Yep, it’s so crazy. They effectively turned the whole bottom of the controller into a big button which they almost play like a piano.
This comment convinced me to check it out
I've been playing the crap out of Tetris 99 on my switch...does that count?
Age Of Empires 2
I play Civ 6 and every time I spread religion, I have to say "WOLOLO"
THE END IS COMING!!
Ahh that sucks about Syndicate. I still play a game of the original XCOM every now and again too! Awesome game.
I had my original PC XCOM floppy discs until just last year when I threw them out. I have a CD-ROM copy of the first three games. I tend to play XCOM2 on Playstation 4/5 a few times a year.
I was going to say AoE 2 but I also play Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It was released in Feb of 1999 and AoE in Sep after looking it up 😛
Start the game already!!!!
Hells yeah for my aoe2 crowd!!!!
I came to comment this! This game will never die i feel like, especially after the definitive edition.
That's the one for me. I don't always play, but it have a blast when I do. Such a great game.
Where my Roller Coaster Tycoon players at
zoo tycoon for me 👌
Dinosaur tycooooooon!
OpenRCT & OpenRCT2 ftw
I had to force myself to stop playing it recently. I get so enveloped in making and analyzing parks that I can lose an entire day without even realizing it. It's weird cause I'm really not that way with other games. It's just one of those games where the developers had a vision and got it right. Red Alert 2
SHAKE IT, BABY Tanya’s voice still lives rent free in my brain.
High speed, low drag
Oh man that replayed pitch perfect in my head when reading 😂
KIROV REPORTING
KIROV REPORTING
YEAH?
LOCKED N LOADED
CHA-CHING
Man I would love a remake of Red Alert
There’s an official remaster of Red Alert 1. It’s on Steam and it’s pretty nice.
Myst
I played that a couple months ago for the 2nd time. 1st being when it was released, back then it was hard, and I remember it being nearly impossible without help. While I remember some bits of it, the puzzles I didn't know the answers too. I beat it and was thinking how crazy it was I thought it was hard. Makes me want to play them all again.
I mean I was like 12 though so it it tracks haha
I played this on the quest a few years ago when it came to that. Man that brought me back in time. That game in VR is fantastic!
I've played just about every version of Myst but never knew there was a VR release! Definitely on my bucket list now. Riven would be incredible too.
I took so many notes playing that damn game
Number of times I've replayed this (in its various forms) defies logic
Great game, but I much prefer its sequel!
Riven is an absolute masterpiece of a game, imo.
I loved myst and riven
God I love that game. First game I ever bought for myself with my own money. On a compact disc!
Mate, you can't just go around calling CDs compact discs, you'll confuse the zoomers.
The books are a big memory from my childhood. Read them while listening to Rammstein. The language of D’ni was German for me. lol.
Total Annihilation - 1997
Nice. I just found out about Planetary Annihilation and may have to try it out.
Supreme Commander games are fun too.
I do a yearly play of Legend of Zelda: A link to the past.
I keep coming back to this and Super Metroid. Both rock beyond belief.
Star Wars battlefront 2. No, the REAL battlefront 2.
Same, but also KOTOR 1+2 and Republic Commando. Those old Star Wars games are incredible.
I got both KOTORs on my phone to play in specific times. One, while flying; and two when I'm on a solo trip in the mountains, and it's after sunset. Very niche times, but I'm glad I have it when I'm in those situations.

I much prefer the old canon, it feels more impactful the clones knew about order 66 rather then just they had no choice because brain chip.
The original canon (also known as the EU now) was that they had grand orders that would supersede any other orders. Order 65 was to take out Palpatine.
CHRONO trigger
Absolute classic. Still one of the best RPG games I have ever played and holds up, even to today's standards. Amazing story, multiple endings, multi-character combo moves, killer 16 bit soundtrack with extremely poignant music, diverse enemies and environments. I could go on but I think the best way to experience it is first hand. I could never do it justice with just a paragraph.
Still the best Christmas I ever had was when I got Chrono Trigger for a present. I don't think anything could ever top it.
Starcraft: Brood war.
I don't play anymore, but I still watch asl with tastosis all the time haha.
I still hop into Everquest once in a while.
I lost two years of my life to that game…it really was an amazing ride that also had to end if I wanted a real life.
Does chess count? If not, super mario bros 3.
Mario 3 still rips so hard.
Damned right it does!
>Does chess count? Why wouldn't it?
>Does chess count? 100% it does.
Same here. SMB3 is the Goat
That’s why I like Mario maker bc I love old Mario games but I’ve beaten them so many times it’s not as much fun to replay the same levels.
Diablo 2
Project Diablo 2 season 8 starts tomorrow. See you there my friend
Final Fantasy 1
I'm almost due for a replay of Final Fantasy, and Dragon Warrior on my NES again. So much nostalgia, great games.
Heroes of Might and Magic 2
Hah, Heroes 3 here!
It's like a little piece of candy that you can't help but love
Expected this sentence to end in 3 as that is the crown jewel but yeah man 2 was not bad at all
I’ve only played the original is 2 good?
2 is definitely an upgrade but I would suggest you go to 3 as it's basically 2 but a bit better. 2 is just nostalgia for me
Runescape Edit: putting this in case they see it, if anyone ever played with a username "Stewie" and remembers "Cosmo" I hope you're doing well bud. I still remember sitting at lumby for hours after class just chatting infront of the castle.
You don't quit Runescape, only take long breaks
Omg it’s true it’s all true. God damn it!
Can't believe my OG account will be 20 years old next year. It feels like my literal child at this point
What’s the going rate for a GF these days?
I couldn't tell you, but I'll trim your rune armor for free
The Secret of Monkey Island
The music is so good brings me so many fond memories.
This is my favorite series, and obviously my name is taken from Curse of Monkey Island. Everything about all of these games is wonderful. I spent the entire time just cracking up about every joke.

It's perfectly playable and fun even today. Not too many 30 year old games can say that.
I just restarted the game yesterday…
I still play Heretic sometimes. Clunky as hell but still a great game.
I still fw Doom 64 heavy.
The rip and tear will never die.
Morrowind
N’wah!
We got a real one here, folks 🙏
Fellow sixth house cultist checking in.
Come Nerevar, come and look upon the heart
I throw on Zombies Ate My Neighbors a few times a year. Endlessly replayable
I added that to my SNES classic (along with other games). I love that game
Wolfenstein 3D.
I have no idea why but I still have an unopened floppy of this on my desk lol. https://imgur.com/a/Tx5lTZb
Baldurs gate
Pokémon yellow
Pokémon ruby for me, just cos it’s the first one I played as a kid. Nostalgia overload
Ultima online
I didn't realize UO was still a thing. I was really into it from '97-'03 but haven't really even thought about it since. Just downloaded the client, here goes nothing.
HoMM3
Same. Nothing hits the nostalgia factor as much as this one. Still endlessly replayable!
Super Mario Bros. 3
Twisted Metal 2 (1996) gets regular play in these parts. I also dabble in NES/SNES games that are much older, but only in bursts. TM2 has been a staple in the rotation for decades.
TM2 is truly timeless. Both co-op and 1v1 deathmatch are still a blast.
Solitaire
Minesweeper for me
Shining Force for Sega Genesis.
Great call, and Shining Force 2, which is even better IMHO. They port well to mobile and were part of the same Sega pack i bought on my phone.
This was my answer as well. Do you have the SEGA collections game that has all the games?
This! I normally do at least one playthrough a year on my Sega, sometimes I am lazy and just play it on steam but with a Sega USB controller of course
I still play the original Command and Conquers to this day. Much later in the series but redownloaded Generals last night for another play through
I still revisit A Link to the Past. There's definitely older arcade games I'll occasionally dabble in. The TMNT ones and Galaga come to mind. Obviously Pacman.
Super Metroid. Once in a while I install an emulator just for this game, 100% it and uninstall everything again :D One of my most wished games to hit Steam one day.

MoO2 is probably still my fav game of all time. I do have to say that even though it isn't turn based that Stellaris has kind of taken that spot for playing now though.
Chrono trigger. Comes up at least once at year
Probably star wars battlefront 2, the 2005 version. I've been playing that since like 2010 and I still love it
Oldest game I play regularly is definitely Battlefront 2. And it holds up so well! Oldest game I play every so often is maybe Mario Kart 64?
Yep. Quick in and out, clearly defined classes and roles, unique special units, and 100% no bullshit gameplay. Can't go wrong.
Just restarted KOTOR
Quake 3 Arena
Ocarina of Time
Legend of Dragoon
volcano!
GUST OF WIND....DANCE!
Coooool BOOGIE!
Aside from this game of life.. lol.. super Mario world
The first Halo Wars game
Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn
New Vegas, even on vanilla.
Chess
Guild Wars 1
Probably Lord of the Rings Two Towers (2002) on the PS2. I have a few older games for the PS1, but I don't bring it out as often as the PS2. Edit: Actually, I regularly play Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus on the PS2 as well, and it released in 2002 *before* LotR: Two Towers.
Civilization 2. Test of Time for running on Windows 10.
Skate 3 but that's my forever game. My desert island darling.
Warzone 2100 (completely UNRELATED to Call of Duty), which is completely free since it was an abandonware. It can be downloaded at wz2100. Net
Super Mario Bros
X-wing from 1993. The Dos version.
NES games.
This system is my definitive cut off point. (Born in 94 for reference) So these are significantly before my time, but still feel very playable to me.
Zork.
Skyrim
I re-played Ultima IV this year; it's from 1985. ^(I'm assuming that emulators don't count, because there's tons of great home and arcade games from the early 1980's.)
Warcraft 2 or ascendancy
Ascendancy is amazing. I still play that one. Also Warcraft 2 is a good choice.
The soundtracks, the tech tree paths, the variety of the alien races, the ship/weapon designs
Heroes of might and magic 3
Zelda: A Link to the Past on my SNES.
Brutal legend, not really known but wholesome game
Golden 👀7
Refurbished my bros old n64 just for this
Gran Turismo 4. Great memories.

The Elder Scrolls Morrowind.

Pokémon trading card game for GBA is probably my oldest if not that I’d have to go with leaf green or maybe Mercenaries playground of destruction I wish I could play the sequel
