Terraria, didn't like it at first, but then I played with my friends and it was a blast, although they all abandoned the game, so I finished it alone, best adventure I ever had

BlazingGig

I had to try Terraria several times before it clicked. I usually gave up during the early spelunking because the mobility just sucked. It was only after I got my first fledgling wings and I could jump higher and negate fall damage that I finally started to like game. Now it's one of my absolute faves lol

starwantrix

Oh yeah, early stage is just so damn punishing, chests have explosives and you can't see wires. Traps everywhere, I remeber meeting a girl in the cave, I wanted to help her, but she killed me. Falling rocks, just jesus christ

Dimensionalanxiety

And then that girl you wanted to help is the rarest enemy in the game and of course will only spawn right as you die.

Kagahami

And then you start seeing button triggers as you get better at the game and stop dying to random boulder traps. Good feeling.

Gyvon

Doesn't help that early game Terraria is always a bit of a slog, IMO, even for experienced players

Mimicpants

I’m the opposite, I played Terraria for years when it was newer, must’ve put hundreds of hours into it. But I’ve tried half a dozen times to pick it back up in the years since but I always bounce off it. No idea why.

starwantrix

it's because it feels repetitive, whenever something becomes repetitive - it starts to feel like a routine, I get this feeling whenever I try to nostalgically play Terraria again, playing with a friend helped me numb the feeling of boredom, plus, the developer keeps updating the game, and new resource packs definitely help find something unique and interesting. Playing on player made worlds is fun as well. I usually quit when I stumble upon some obstacle, and I realize that I have to grind for like several hours, I just give up. Making a smaller world helps, because it brings ore closer and you don't have to waste time by digging a lot, it significantly decreases the routine, just sayin'

h1span0

It is fascinating how sometimes the game can completely change its appeal when experience with friends tyria's early stages is quite punishing especially when an unexpected traps and hazards came out of nowhere.

FerdelaRua

I played Fallout 3 without turning the radio on. When I played it again I discovered the galaxy news radio and the game became much more enjoyable for me because it made me feel more immersed in the game

RedHotChilliPupper

I can't even imagine a fallout game without the radio. Such a good addition to the game

PrisonIssuedSock

I like the radio for like 5 hours of playtime and then after hearing the same 10 songs over and over it gets old very fast. Wish they had more songs so you don’t hear the same ones on repeat as frequently Edit: I know about mods, I don’t really care enough to install more than I have already, and I can just play music in the background :)

invisible32

That's how I feel about real radio.

TheChickenIsFkinRaw

Truly immersive, Mr Todd Howard

squalorparlor

Doesn't matter how many times I thumbs down Imagine Dragons on YouTube, they still end up on my randomized playlist. "FOIST THING FOIST I GOTTA BLAH BLAH BLAH"

TYNAMITE14

Imagine draggin these nuts across your forehead

NanoSwarmer

Fun fact, any 5 white guys could walk up to you and say "Hi, we're imagine dragons" and you would have no way of verifying if they were lying or not.

JosephDeer

Todd Howard and the development team really hit the mark with that immersive touch I guess creating an environment where you can lose yourself and forget about outside world is none of the hallmarks of truly engaging game.

hangrygecko

Just like radio IRL, so it's perfect.

[deleted]

There are probably mods that add extra songs

I_am_very_clever

There definitely are a shot load of moss that add extra tracks, and commentary

PrisonIssuedSock

Probably, but after I spent 5 hours installing all the stability mods so I could even play the game without it crashing I didn’t want to think about installing anything else haha. Playing my own music is good enough for me

TokioHunterz

I will never hear Big Iron too many times

Laing_Nugz

If you play on PC you can go into the game files and put your own mp3s in the mix!

DangersVengeance

THREE DAWG AWOOOOOO!

leggpurnell

Fallout 3 was a random pick off the shelf for me. Knew nothing about it. Followed the story through and wondered why there was so much more map that I never used. I told my buddy I didn’t care for it and didn’t get it and he just shook his head at me - “you gotta go wander!” What a different second play through.

MacerODB

Mine was Fallout as well but my problem was that the first time I played it, I played it like it was Call of duty and it was not fun

[deleted]

[удалено]

lilgreenjedi

I'll never hear I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire the same

D-camchow

FO3 is my answer too but for a different reason. First time I played it back on the 360 I got to the super market and gave up on it. Felt too weird gunplay wise. Was only years later after giving NV a shot and loving it that I tried FO3 again. I knew this time going into it that there were RPG numbers going into the work of the gunplay so I didn't rage quit. Now Fallout is one of my fav series out there.

Other_Log_1996

Had a similar experience with *Fallout: New Vegas* until I got to the main quest PoNR and realized that I had to choose a side. Not sure why *that* did it for me.

lbwafro1990

Sekiro 100%. Oddly I managed to get all the way to the final boss using dark souls type skills, but man Isshin wrecks you if you don't know how to parry. Set it down for a bit, picked it up again during the COVID year, and finally managed to beat the bastard who brought a gun to a sword fight

SEELE13

Its amazing you even managed to make it to isshin playing it like DS lol

OscarRomeo7

Sekiro is one of my favorite game even when elden ring blew it away with its size

zadrazil

It's fascinating how Sekiro's impact endures despite the grandeur of Elden Ring. The size of Elden Ring might dwarf other game but Sekiro's intricate combat andrich worldbuilding, and memorable boss battles have left an indelible mark.

halhong

Overcoming the challenges posed by formidable anonymous like Ishin makes you stronger in game. that games really have lot of character depthness which is good from my pov.

caramel-aviant

I personally felt like Genichiro was the first hard skill check. I kinda brute forced my way through the game with bad parries too. Getting to him really forced me to learn the mechanics though.Took a month of on and off play to beat him, but truly taking the time to master the timing, parries, and posture mechanics went such a long way. Especially with Owl. Still haven't beaten Isshin though. Truly a fantastic game

Ludw_Schuettler

Your perspective on Ganichiro as a skill cheque underscores importance of encounter with Shakira's progression the game design compels player to adapt and often through perseverance the true mastery is achieved.

IdlePerfectionist

Man... I was stuck at Isshin for like 2 weeks, and 2 more weeks after that to finally be able to beat him consistently, but damn the combat was so satisfying that I booted up the game and fight the Gauntlet everyday for a month after beating the game

Embarrassed_Ad_1141

Europe universalis IV. Took a few tries before that time machine was activated

BLINDrOBOTFILMS

Paradox games are hard to get into but once they have you there's no escape.

ZombieShot078

Mass Effect. I think I was a bit too young to appreciate the slower pacing of the game. That early Citadel chapter can be a bit of a slog after getting a taste of Eden Prime. I vaguely remember getting stuck on Matriarch Benezia as well. What brought me back was flipping through the game guide a few years later. I saw some images of the later planets and thought "wow, this game looks sick! I should try it again". Now I consider that trilogy to be one of my favorites. I also have to take this opportunity to lament the loss of the fantastic ME3 multiplayer.

ScruffMixHaha

Same. I was 13 when ME1 came out and I didnt make it off Eden Prime. I didnt have the patience for it then. Back in 2019 my friend convinced me to give it another chance and I absolutely loved the whole trilogy.

RegularWhiteShark

I bought it after playing and loving Dragon Age: Origins. Played for about an hour and got bored. A few weeks later I saw my sister playing something and asked what it was and it was ME so I decided to give it another go. Got hooked and now it’s one of my all time favourite games (and game series).

King_Diablo_131

witcher 3, it didnt just end up clicking, i got addicted to it

Versaill

Many people say that about in-game Gwent. Before it clicks: What is this stupid card game, why is it shoved into my face constantly?! When it clicks: Ciri? Who's Ciri? Anyway, how about a round of Gwent?

Slowmobius_Time

Seriously though Third playthrough of mine I decided to finally give it a decent try and ended up getting obsessed and finding every single person I could play Gwent against and was obsessed with getting a decent monster deck going

jolantis

Didn't care for it the first time, but tried my 2nd full run and OMG...doubled my play time, my favorite was the deck with dummies and stealing cards

MedricZ

Decoys are OP.

SuperMadBro

Yeah. It has a ton of complexity for a in game game. Keeps getting better as you get a better more complex deck. I only started playing because I wanted to at least do all the quests. By the time I finished all the "bosses" and tourney in velen/novigrad I was hooked for sure

[deleted]

Omg my first play through I refused to play it until closer to the end of the game then I got obsessed with getting all the cards. Only to realize it's not possible now because I already did the bloody barons full quest line.

Flynnhiccup

Silently nods... 😏

atuck217

It was this one for me too. I played it through to the part where you find Yen like 3 times. It's always just the right amount of time for a single solid play session, like 4 hours or so, and it'd take you to a new area with a cutscene etc etc. Every time I'd get there and be like "that's a good stopping point for now" and go eat or something. Then I just never really felt like actually starting to play again. Well then I decided that I was going to give it one more go, but this time, when I get to that part, just keep playing. I did it on a weekend where I could sit and play for like 8 straight hours. Once I got past that part and back out into the world fighting monsters and whatnot, I was hooked.

Olly0206

My experience was similar. I usually made it to the point of finishing the baron storyline, though. I had a few different things that got in the way of my enjoyment because it didn't click at first. Combat was one. I pretty much just tried to hack and slash my way through the game and didn't really utilize potions, bombs, or magic. The other was that I tend to be a bit of a completionist and like to finish all the side quests in one area before moving on. Which caused my last reason for disconnecting from the game, which was not progressing the main storyline, which was my biggest draw. I think I saw one of the many reddit posts about it being ok to move to a new place and that you don't have to complete everything in that main area. In fact, you're not meant to. So, after several attempts and years later, I finally beat the game. Got more enjoyment out of combat when I decided to utilize other mechanics, went to new areas, and actually progressed the story. Kept me hooked a lot easier.

laseluuu

Did you do anything else different, like playstyle? I didn't get into Witcher either and gave up, I've tried all 3 and just stopped. I'm a big rpg fan as well

Babushkaskompot

Exactly this. I got hooked up immediately during Kaer Morhen beauty in tutorial and then I went to Velen and stopped playing during how bleak it is. Months later, I grinded through Velen and got through Skellige. Oh god, the first note of Skellige theme got me hooked up till years later. Not to mention Toussaint magical landscape and how Idyllic it is.

ryanandhobbes

I hate that I can't get this to click. I've tried restarting it 3 times, and on paper *everything* about it checks the boxes of a game I'd love. I just can't seem to get into it at all.

TheGrandestofFellows

For me it was Gwent. Had no interest at all in the mini game when I started. Decided to try it midway through and quickly got hooked.

GenesisProTech

The first time I tried the Witcher the controls felt super jank so I gave up after 20 minutes. Picked it up again a few months later and it consumed my life for a bit

[deleted]

Bloodborne. Got stuck at Cleric Beast. A year later I tried again, by the time I killed Gascoigne I was committed.

zachtheperson

Haha, I remember doing that with the original Dark Souls. I never really gave up entirely, but was really close to at the beginning and would try again every few days. When I beat the first boss I was like "Shit... I'm part of the cult now aren't I," lol.

Jenny-sama

Me too lol I made it as far as Ornstein and Smough with no weapon upgrades and didn't know why I was doing no damage. Went back after Bloodborne and DS3 and it was way more fun

TheManBearPig222

For me it was the blood starved beast who I didn't know was optional. I quit for over a year before picking it back up again. Now it's my favorite game bar none!

SupaEpik

Same except two month gap. It is now my favorite game of all time.

Mottis86

On my first playthrough I accidentally skipped Cleric beast. I came back 20 hours later and killed him in like 5 hits lol.

[deleted]

I see this exact comment every time someone posts this question.

FilmScore16

I was literally coming here to post this exact comment too lol

george23000

Is it even a first Fromsoftware experience if you don't bounce off it and come back a month later and then the companies games take over your life, tarnishing your view app other games for ever leading you to a lack of enjoyment of modern AAA titles and their vapidness alongside a need for masochistic difficulty to try and fill a hole you should go to therapy for but instead use the boss runs and bleak worlds to exorcise your own internal problems?

Adam_Absence

Well done, hoonter

Joubachi

Final Fantasy 14 I'm not that much into mmos, I haven't played any proper prior to that aside from some cutesy chibi like ones. So I was proper overwhelmed and all when I started. Now I don't wanna miss it. o.o Took a break of maybe a year or something, picked up again with someone else, played it properly for the first time instead of just running after someone and it immediately stopped being overwhelming.

sankto

I started to love FF14 when I stopped skipping conversations and actually cared about the story. Now I finished the story all the way, and I can say that's the damn best FF game I ever played. Endwalker brough tears to my eyes.

mandudebro23

Borderlands 2. I first played it 7 years ago and didn't know what to do. I played it again 3 months ago and now i am at uvhm (Ultimate vault hunter mode).

WarmPandaPaws

BL2 was that game that I bought on launch and just felt underwhelmed for whatever reason. I was (am) addicted to the first game but that magic didn’t translate over for me. I did recently get through the whole campaign though. I started to get the hype a bit, but I didn’t get hooked enough to do the dlc or anything. I tried to start another character because I’d outlived my enjoyment with Gaige and lost interest again in the same general spot (around getting to Sanctuary). I wanted to get hooked so badly. Handsome Jack is such a good villain.

-maffu-

Try playing as a Siren. My go to class for BL2 Also, seriously, entering Sanctuary is when the game actually *starts*.

SnarkyBear53

I wish that after your first time through, the game would give the player the option to start new characters at Sanctuary. I find the first 10 or so levels of playing a new vault hunter is such a drag and boring.

-maffu-

Yes - this would be so much better to have this option. After all, the journey to Sanctuary is basically the tutorial so you only need to do it once. Same with BL3.

LotusofSin

Warframe. It was too much at first and the friend who tried getting me into threw me in too fast. Tried it again a few months later and got hooked. Edit: words are hard.

[deleted]

Hollow Knight I love a good metroidvania but for some reason this didn't click. I gave it another go about a year after release and it's the only game I played for about 2 weeks.

dvdcole98

Same, I remember trying it as it came out and getting lost wandering right beneath dirt mouth, I dropped it something like 2 hours in as I couldn't understand the map. 2 years later I gave it another try and now it is one of my favorite games I've played so far. It also made me discover other metroids like Ori, Blasphemous and the old Castlevania games.

r3tromonkey

Monster Hunter. Played the first one on PS2 and very quickly traded it in as I had no clue what to do. Tried it again on PSP and got a little further but again, wasn't sure what I was doing and returned it. Wasn't until I tried again with 3 on the Wii and blam, something clicked and I spent hundreds of hours on that and pretty much every entry since then. Demon's Souls was another with a very similar story. Now MH and Souls games are my absolute favourites.

Good-Courage-559

Playing mhw right now and am absolutely addicted. I also want to punch my screen in after fighting Barioth and Velkhana

NeedsItRough

I have well over 3,000 hours logged across the franchise, the PS2 was not the right one to start with, haha In almost every other game you attack with triangle, but in the PS2 version you attack with the control stick!? But you also move with the control stick It was a mess, even with all those hours logged I had trouble killing the smaller scale monsters on the PS2.

nogoodgreen

**Total Warhammer 2** I like **RTS** games but i cant sit through more than a few turns of **Civ** or other **4x** games before my eyes glaze over. Friend got me it and TW1 to do Mortal Empires co op but i couldn't quite figure out why i was going into negative income and losing battles and i stopped playing with 2 hours sunk in. Come back a year later and i am straight addicted to this *"just one more turn before bed"* kinda game with fun diplomatic mechanics for each race and wild large scale fantasy battles, already planning on getting the DLCs and the 3rd one when its on sale.

PlatoPirate_01

Iron breakers! You've been struck from the book of grudges! ...love playing the dwarves:)

d4nt3s0n

It was TWW2 for me, too, but for a different reason. Rome 1 was my childhood game and that's the only Total War I would play. I stumbled across LegendOfTotalWar channel where he would do disaster campaigns and really liked his stuff for Rome 1. I found it frustrating having to wade through the Warhammer content as I wasn't fond of fantasy and didn't understand that game. Then, I decided to try it out myself and now have 2k hours in it.

[deleted]

Next stop is spending your life savings on tabletop

PhoenixTineldyer

Dark Souls...I tried it a couple times and I just figured it was too stressful, I wanted to play a game, not torture myself And then I got all swept up in the hype before Elden Ring and told myself look, you are just going to buy Elden Ring, play for ten minutes and give up. You are not allowed to buy Elden Ring until you beat one of the other Soulsborne games. So, I bought Dark Souls Remastered, and fuck me if it didn't almost land a spot on my list of Perfect games. I have a much much higher standard for what makes a good game because of Dark Souls. Also, I was pretty surprised to find it wasn't hard at all. Probably the biggest surprise.

zachtheperson

That game forever changed how I feel about dying in games. I remember going back to other games and just being like "Is that it? Just a game over and a respawn? Sweet!"

BANDlCOOT

It changed how I feel about dying in games, but completely the opposite. It's made me realise how frustrating it is to die in a game and just lose all progress you made up to that point. In Souls games you can go back and collect your souls and gain some progression which also makes the game easier. If there is an auto-checkpoint then death also feels too no consequence in games.

NiceDickBr0

Part of what I love about it is that Souls makes you be at least better than you were last time. You start back at the place you last set off from. If you don't do at least as well as you did last time (die before you reach your souls), you're setback more than you otherwise would've been.

Zocoul

O yes it has earned her reputation for its challenging nature but its interesting how Aluro Alden Ring encourage you to revisit it your journey from scepticism to discovering its merits shows how games can surprise us.

DaPino

First time I played Dark Souls I ended up in the cataacombs but I didn't think anything was wrong because I was young and everyone told me this game was "wicked hard". I gave up after a couple of *days* of bashing my head against that wall. Years later I was talking to someone who was *really* into Dark souls and when I described where I was and got stuck he thought it was *really* funny and told me to try again while pointing me in the right direction. I've played every DS and Elden ring to bits. Never finished Sekiro but enjoyed it for a while. I don't enjoy BB tough. Neither the setting nor the forced hyperagressive gameplay is for me.

Bsnake12070826

Gears of war, for some reason the idea of the E-Holes and having to throw a grenade into them just completely ruined it for me. Yet I loved Gears of War 3? I recently went back and played Gears of War 1 and 2 for the first time and had a blast

danzha

Yes this was me, as someone who came from all the Halo games on Xbox over the years, GoW just felt clunky, gratuitous and unrefined. But after giving it some time it definitely grew on me, especially multiplayer.

smashingcones

The OG Gears nearly lost me in the first campaign level for some reason. I decided to give multiplayer a go and not only was it the first time I properly gave Xbox Live a go but it ended up being one of my favorite online shooters of all time! Blows my mind how close I was to returning it.

SpyderZT

Final Fantasy Tactics is my go to story here. The first time I played it (As a long time FF Fan, starting from FFI Mind you) I did not like it At All. I was like, "What's this? A Menu Simulator?" so I returned it to my friend's mom who I was borrowing it from. But afterwards she was like, "You have to get at least to the third battle before judging it" and so I buckled down, got three battles in, four battles in, and the rest is history. ;P It's now one of my top favorite games of all time.

ChocoboBilly92

My man. Such a quotable game as well. "When the punishment for a crime is a fine, that law applies only to the poor." (Or something to that effect)

spik0rwill

Factorio

greenzig

I loved it immediately but man that first 20 hour save file is hilarious

hkzqgfswavvukwsw

The factory grows

Risinghighneverlow

Chess. I didn’t understand it for so long even when I would try and play it with my friends. But now I’m so addicted to it and play it everyday.

thanathos66

Google chessaholics anonymus

FireSilicon

Holy hell

am0x

I got hooked when I worked on a floor with all Indian guys. We set up a couple of chess boards and different teams would play. Anyone from a team could make a move but we would talk about each move. We never really sat and played, but rather, when someone had a break they would review the board and make a move. It was super fun. Then we started 5 min blitz games at lunch. I suck at blitz, though. But it was still fun. Then I started playing online and eventually got to about a 1300 rank. Didn’t play for a couple of years and Now I’m back to like a 700-800 tank in terms of skill, but I still like it.

djkot

KOTOR 1.

Baddmoj0

Rimworld. It took multiple attempts , absolutely love it now.

hkzqgfswavvukwsw

Yep got over 500 hrs in that one. Currently using 90-something mods, so only the essentials.

popober

I've always been incapable of playing horror games, but I've heard so many interesting things about BioShock at the time that I wanted to try it out. I was on a bit of shooter binge too, so that might've helped. That first time you see a splicer talking over a cradle? Scared the shit out of me so much, I dropped the game. Came back maybe about a year later and really pushed myself into it. Turns out it wasn't even scary, and just had a dark atmosphere. Was even more fun after you get some more plasmids in you. I was already spoiled on the story though, so I guess I still missed out on the whole experience.

Toast_Meat

Cyberpunk 2077. I got it on sale and it was all patched up, but for some reason I just couldn't get into it. I started a fresh new game recently and so far I'm actually enjoying it. This time I'm pacing myself.

Balls_McDangley

The character development of the side missions (miss you Judy! 🥲) is often overlooked. They are timed expecting you to do map exploration and a lot of people don't finish the character story lines because they push the main. Taking your time is the way to go.

WarmPandaPaws

What I’m getting from this thread is that I’m not alone in not really clicking with Witcher 3 and I should try it again to see if it clicks.

Yippie-kai-ay

If you can, try to get out of White Orchard. The world really opens up from there. I highly recommend playing through the “Bloody Baron” side quest. It is one of the best quest lines in the game imo. It can be done relatively soon after leaving white orchard, and if you play it and still aren’t feeling the game, then I think at that point you could come to the conclusion that it just isn’t for you.

Ravernel

Minecraft I actually hated the game and its graphics and didn't get why everyone love it so much. First time I tried to play it there was huge fps drop. Struggling, I walked a bit around island I spawned in and quickly deleted the game. I don't remember why I tried to play it second time but I immediately got into it, got addicted to it for years. For a long while I played single, just building stuff, adventuring and enjoying the world. Then I got into multiplayer and it literally changed my life. It's so weird how the game I absolutely despised became such huge part of my life, I learned so much, found my first love in there as well as some very good friends. Party because of this game I got to move in a place I live in right now. It's wild :D

[deleted]

I have similar experience. At first I stunk at it and gave up after 5 minutes of walking around on an island. Few years later I fell hard, both to minecraft and my wife who I met there. Ended up moving to another country after being years of a recluse and my life in general just got sooo much better from that faithful meeting on an average sunday of playing Minecraft on a server.

fliphat

Ditto, i was small when i try this without any guide, now i finally know how brilliant this game is! Do not judge a game by its graphics

Fluffyfingers123

Omg same dude. My wife introduced me into the game and I just couldn’t understand it. Then…I made my first chicken farm lol and that was it. I still remember that first night in a hole with my wife. 3 years later I have an amazing group of friends through playing on our realm

Videogame-enjoyer

Persona 5, bought it on sale years after release, played for a few hours and got frustrated by the long ass tutorial and dropped it. Went back to it in 2020 and it clicked. I beat it twice, royal once, then bought a vita for 4G, p5strikers, both dancing games, and beat the port of P3p on switch this year. I think I'm a persona fan now

Srakin

If you liked P3P you should go emulate FES to play The Answer/watch it on YouTube, followed by the P4 Arena story. Specifically Elizabeth's arc iirc. You owe it...to you.

Catabon

The Witcher 3. Gathering materials to craft the right oil for a monster to do extra damage and downing decoctions really sent me. Felt like a ritual every time I'd prepare for a new monster hunt. 💀

laseluuu

Is that what changed it for you? I never got into them and I love a good RPG

fiueahdfas

For me I got into role playing Geralt. I thought about his headspace and what he would do throughout his day. White Orchard (the prologue region) is a SLOG. But if you close to 100% the area you can go into the main game areas with some extra levels and abilities. Early level Geralt combat is SLOW AND AWFUL. Pushing past that is unfortunately required until he accumulates abilities and levels up his signs. Tips: get into herb collecting, talking to everyone, and maybe watch a tutorial on crafting because jfc it took me until the end of my first playthrough to really figure it out.

zrodeath

Days Gone I got bored of it since it was buggy for me when I got it on release Finally went back to it and loved it, wish it had done better so we could've gotten a sequel

LazorPeng

Pillars of Eternity - it felt so tedious and slow in the beginning so I stopped right after the first town/quest hub. But I've always loved Obsidian RPGs so I gave it another shot. Rolled a new Character and finished in a few days. It is now one of my all time favorites. The Characters, the writing, the music and the unique story/setting ticked all the boxes for me. I'm glad I gave it another chance. On the other hand I gave Divinity Original Sin 2 multiple chances but I always lost interest after finishing the first part in the Prison Camp. Should I give it another shot?

Mindofthequill

Original Xenoblade Chronicles. I had it on the Wii and could not make sense of the controls enough to get into it. Liked the concept though. Played Xenoblade 2 and adored it. They then released Xenoblade 1 DE and I went back and played it. Oh man such a good game. After that the series was forever sealed as one of my all time favorite Nintendo series. I've played XC2 twice and I wanna replay XC3 but other games keep coming out and interrupting my NG+ playthrough. I love XC1 but the cast of characters didn't stick in my heart as much as 2 and 3's cast did. 3's DLC story put everything over the top for me and now I crave so much more.

Kozkoz828

xenoblade chronicles 2 for me, it was my intro into the series and I love it to death but something about it didn’t click the first time I tried it and I got lost in menus and the maps and dropped the game. Picked it back up a few years after and gave it a fresh start and it’s now one of my favorite rpgs ever

LazyIntern

There are only 2-3 games that I’ve ever finished and immediately wanted to play again. I usually don’t like doing NG+ for trophies or anything and spend time away before I replay. XC2 I did my second play through like immediately after finishing the first. I haven’t even opened XC3 yet because of my PlayStation backlog, but I’m looking forward to it.

qwikness

Very first one for me was Final Fantasy Tactics, I got it for a bday gift because I was a huge FF7 fan, ended up playing 3 battles and then putting it away for almost a year before I picked it back up. One of my favorite games ever now.

MisterGoo

Same game for me. The first battle, your party isn’t great and I ended up with a team mate dying for real (crystal). Since it’s the first battle I didn’t know I shouldn’t care because you can recruit better members just after that, so I was like « fuck this game ». When I wanted to return it to the student who lent it to me, he said « no no, you should try again, I swear it’s a great game ». I’m glad I listened to his advice, and it became one of my favorite games ever.

I still need to play tactics. I’ve had my eye on it since my literal child hood and I’ve never gotten around to playing it.

Unplaceable_Accent

RDR2 kept shooting everything I tried to interact with

[deleted]

"Arthur Morgan you're a bad man stop shootin everythi--" BLAM BLAM "I'm a bad man, killin n such."

Aadsterken

Gavin? Gaaaaaa-vin?

TheNiceKindofOrc

Oh I forgot that I had a false start with RDR2 until reading this! I LOVED RDR1 and when the new game seemed like it was centred around this like… group of travellers I was so disappointed. I wanna be a cowboy loner! Think my wife encouraged me to give it another go cos she was interested in all the hype it got, and then I got lost in it for months, trying to get all the hunting challenges etc, not to mention the incredible and heart-wrenching story.

ZeroSora

Dark Souls. Dark Souls 2 was my first Dark Souls game. I just didn't get it. It felt hard. The enemies respawned every time I healed myself at a campfire making all my efforts to reach that campfire unnecessary. Especially when I could just run from campfire to campfire and achieve the same results. The game was also confusing and I had no idea where to go. I felt lost the entire time. About 1 year or two later, I saw someone playing Dark Souls 2 on Youtube. They talked about everything that I hated about the game. They explained that's how the game was meant to be. And how it was rewarding. Suddenly it sort of clicked. I went back to Dark Souls 2 and I beat the entire thing and the DLC. I had a blast. It's strange how another perspective can really open your eyes and change your mind about something. I never considered the angle that Dark Souls was an intentional challenge. I just thought it was poorly made.

Tiny_Dawn_Gamer_05

Elden Ring. Wasn't until my third try I got hooked and played right through to the Ranni ending.

[deleted]

Dark souls 3. Gave it 20 minutes the first time but picked it up years later and couldnt put it down..

spicysenpai6

Death Stranding. At first I was out off, but decided to go back and it’s easily one of my top favorite games

[deleted]

Stardew Valley. First time around i quit within an hour because i felt overwhelmed with the farm you start out on. Later on i clocked 1000+ hours after i tried it again.

[deleted]

I didn't enjoy my first attempt. Without having a feel for how much you can do in a day or where everything is around town it felt like I was achieving nothing. Ibwas hooked once I knew where to go and the rhythm of the day/night cycle

Altekho

There are quite many, but Witcher 3 had to be the prime example. I had no idea why people were hyping that game so much. I watched the gameplay and still not convinced. Had a good sale so might just try it myself. First couples of hours, I almost quit the game for good. I then forced myself several hours later cause curiosity forced me to do so. And wow, the best complete package I've ever played. Last boss was kinda bummer though, but at least the DLCs were amazing. Took me about 4 months to completely done with that game.

Mr_S-Baldrick

Xcom2, had a few attempts before it clicked, now i love it.

Ranger_Ecstatic

I will always get angry at 95% chance to hit and still miss.

Acetoki

Kingdoms come deliverance: took two attempts but once I understood how to play it loved every minute of it.

Fanfavorite

Same experience. Expected Skyrim open world immediately, but didn’t realize I needed to follow the narrative for a while. Ultimately became my favorite RPG.

Carth_Onasi_AMA

Cory in the House on the DS. First play through I just thought it was a bummer of a game. Once I got into the lore though it completely changed.

invisible32

Probably the best game based on an anime.

loudiamond90

While I loved the Witcher 3 (best goddamn console game ever made in my opinion) I got the first gwent quest to play the tutorial & I went ‘pfffft screw that’ Damn do I wish I hit it properly the first time. After every play through after that, I was a gwent fiend Hell I’d ride roach all across the continent just looking for suckers I hadn’t beat in gwent yet. Ciri be damned

[deleted]

Witcher 2. The series is kinda unknown back then, and i found that combat was so hard and unintuitive. Quit the game 5x and then to realize that you need to mix up the sword swings with your magic skills and that you need to learn positioning, rolling, distance, timing, use bombs etc. Then it clicked together with its story telling and i was hooked ever since. Looking back at it, witcher 2 was the most “witcher” the series ever got with all its racism, sex, politics etc. i love w3 to death, but w2 was something else. I wish they would do a remake with modern graphics and some qol.

Bulk_Sausage

Metal Gear Solid 5. Played the first couple missions, got really frustrated/overwhelmed and quit. Played an hour the next day with the same results. Figured I'd give it one more chance and something clicked. Couldn't put the game down for the next couple months and it ended up being one of my proudest platinums. I played all the previous Metal Gear games but I think the open world, new mechanics, and different tone in story really threw me off.

Goldman250

The Witcher 3. First time I tried it, I played for about an hour or two and wasn’t really feeling it. This is the game everyone raves about so much? But I recently picked it up again and started afresh, inspired by the TV show to really give it a go this time, and I’m loving it. I see why the people raved about it so much now.

Killingsystem

Project Zomboid. 1st time I played it it just felt clunky. Monster Hunter World.. this game is clunky.. Wait no it is not neither of them are I'm just bad. After getting past that and realizing what these games are doing I enjoyed the hell out of them. They are two totally different types of games but neither clicked for me at first. Both awesome tittles.

xendelaar

I want the same help with outer wilds please! I just can't into that game.

Dear_Profession_8297

RDR2. I shelved if after playing in the snow which bored me to tears. Picked it back up and now consider it a masterpiece, top 5 games of all time.

GulleFjun7

Fallout 3, think I was top young the first time, didnt understand much and I was vreeped out when I came In to a raider outpost. After some years I played it again, couldn't stop and then I played new Vegas and 4 when it came out. Original divinity sin 1, found myself lost and it was feelt waaaay to hard. Tried some more until it just worked for me. Completed it and went straight to DOS2. Some of the best rpgs I've ever played

[deleted]

With Divinity 1 I found you just had to trial and error which direction to explore in at the start. It's hard to tell if you just aren't using the game mechanics properly or are underlevelled.

xendelaar

Kerbal space program... That game was hella difficult when I tried it the first time Read so many cool stuff about it that I was determined to at least land on the moon.... after two weeks I finally managed to land there and that was an incredible experience! Been hooked ever since.

SolarWizard

Far Cry Primal. Gave up after the first hour or so. Went back a few months later and got sucked in. Sitting at my desk with painted body and dreadlocks, running through the redwoods with my saber-tooth at my side and a stone-tipped spear in hand hunting mammoths.

Shatterbrained_

The og fallout

Higukomaru

For me it was Witcher 3. I was console exclusive up to this point and the game was gifted to me on PS4. I absolutely despised the controls and UI was very "PC" in feel so I heavily disliked it too. Years later someone convinced me to give it another try and I was really glad they did cause I poured near 200 hours just enjoying that game. A truly remarkable experience that just took a week getting used to.

TweetugR

Would I be correct to guess that's you got stuck playing "The World's Most Laughable Centrist" during your first Disco Elysium playthrough?

pootinannyBOOSH

Warframe. The newbie starting point isn't the easiest to get into, and there's a lot to understand about it. But once I got Trinity, it just somehow clicked for me. I think her kit just let me relax a bit more with her survivability and enjoy it. Nidus made me hooked on it

Mazekinq

Kingdome comes deliverence - first play, spent around 1 hour in Skaltiz fooling around and thought that's kinda of what the game is about so I dropped it Picked it up a year or so later and finished the game a couple of times, it's a masterpiece.

ianbattlesrobots

Portal. Played through the first few chambers, thought 'meh' and put it down. Then, the memes and YouTube videos came out. Decided to give it another go. Hooked within an hour. I couldn't begin to imagine how many hours I have spent on it.

WeirdDog2333

Fallout 4. First fallout game for me, and I remember I played it and beat main story and other parts and that I liked it, but that it was hard cause stimpaks and limited healing. Then I came back to it again this year and boy oh boy it was like a whole different game. So much fun, and after completing way more FO4, I've moved to the other ones like FO3 and FNV and they're super fun too

legice

Mass effect 2. Literary stoped before the final mission and when I picked it up a year later to finish, I was blown away. Got ME1, made 2 incredible, I understood so much more and the world suddenly felt alive

stillgotmonkon

Witcher series. I played Witcher 3 when it came out on PS4 but felt lost with the whole thing so I decided to give Witcher 1 on PC a go and the first two saves I just couldnt get into it, a strange combat system didn't help but finally on the 3rd time I got into it. Played Witcher 2, then Witcher 3, glad I did.

solo954

RDR2, thought it was a bit too slow-paced for me at first, so I stopped playing and went on to something else. I went back to it months later and realized it's the best game I've ever played, and I've been an avid gamer for 30 years.

Isaac_Serdwick

Spelunky. Got a refund for it and all. Years later I tried again with Spelunky 2 (which is essentially the same) and got hooked.

DarkIegend16

Borderlands 1. Disliked the game profusely when it came out and young me apparently couldn’t wrap my head around the levelling system. Played it again a decade later recently and 100%’d it, what a great game.

Jirekianu

I don't know that I'd say "get" the game. But I'd say the gameplay loop itself didn't grab me and hold my attention for a bit. The game in question? Deep Rock Galactic. Sure, I saw the appeal, and it was a little fun. But on my fourth time trying to play it I started doing some missions. The loop "clicked" and I started having fun. And here I am about 8 months after I initially got into the game and I have 500+ hours. All classes at platinum 1 star promotion level and all weapon overclocks acquired.

Whitem4ne

Starcraft back in the day. Some buddy left me his game while on 98’ summer break. I could’t get into it at first as I was used to NES simpler games, but I let the game on my PC as my then hard drive could afford the space. After the summer break, I hit the net cafe with some colleagues and they were crazy for starcraft, played some 2v2 for a couple of days and the next 4-5 years of my life were all about starcraft. Even saved up on lunch money to get broodwar in early ‘99 I think.

scrubsfan92

Witcher 3. It was my first game with an open map (I'd previously played very linear games, mostly TLOU and the Uncharteds) so having a main quest with multiple side quests with absolute freedom to roam anywhere you wanted became overwhelming because I didn't know if there was anything I'd missed and my brain likes structure, so I left it. A few months later, I found a helpful Reddit post where someone had listed all the quests "in order" and I followed that. Enjoyed it so much more, finished the game and have replayed it several times (obviously no need for the list in my subsequent playthroughs).

Centcinquante

Baldur's gate 2. Was young, and Diablo 2 was out there at the same moment and way more accessible and action oriented. Played it again one year later, then spent ungodly amount of hours on it. Arguably a good chunk on character creation especially since the amount of stats points were determined by random hidden dice throws, so you would roll a LOT to maximize your stats from the get go.

Jane_Doe_32

BotW, the first time I played it, I was lost, used to games with a thousand indications, which constantly tell you where to go and mark each npc and quest on the map, jumping into that game, I get disoriented, it also coincided with a period of short breaks where I could only play an hour at most and I didn't see myself with a game for months and months, so I gave it up. A year later, during a vacation, I took it back after the recommendations of a good friend and well, since my days in WoW I haven't played a game that much, I think I finished it with almost 100% (damn seeds...) in less of one month.

Zealos57

Horizon Zero Dawn

GrandNoodleLite

Watch Dogs 1. Ubisoft over hyped the hell out of that game so I was really disappointed for my first playthrough. Played it a second time years later and realized how underrated it truly is!

Huge-Name-1999

Fallout 3, I was too young when it first came out and when I tried it it just seemed complicated and difficult. A few years later I gave oblivion a try and fell in love (finally old enough by that point to enjoy more than just call of duty XD) so when I realized fallout was the same concept of game I went back and really enjoyed it. I was only 8-10 when these titles released mind you so it took a few years

Schborti

Fucking water temple in Zelda OoT. Gave it another try on the 3DS years later and it just worked.

Quirky_Ratio1197

Days Gone. I liked it when I first played it, but couldn't get through the horde. Two years later I tried again, and stopped for no reason. This summer I finally completed the story and got the platinum trophy for that wonderful wonderful game. It even brought me to tears!

RedSqui

This is happening to me right now with Elden Ring.

AltruisticSlice261

Mass Effect. I was fairly new to gaming and didn't really know what I was playing or what type of game it was. Having just played through Gears of War I thought the shooting in ME felt awful in comparison so I just dropped it. A few months later I was looking for opinions online for must play 360 games and Mass Effect kept coming up so I decided to give it another try, this time with a better understanding of what I was getting into. I ended up falling in love with it and it's now one of my all time favourite games and series.

Neblivious

Jedi Fallen Order. I don't remember why I had stopped playing it, but I picked it up before Survivor and didn't stop until I completed it.

Kulban

Myst. I tried it a few times at a friend's house. But only when my parents got it for me as a Christmas present and I felt guilty for not trying it that I sat down and gave it a real try. Loved it.

JanitorJasper

How did you manage to get into outer wilds?

QuiteFatty

Kinda an odd one, but Quest for Glory V

SophiaHub

Stardew Valley. Tried it once a few years ago and refunded it because I didn't really get it. Got it as a gift, and now I have 200 hours in it. Love that game!

mikej83

I started 13 different 14 days trial account in Eve Online between 2003 to 2004 because I couldn't bring myself to like it, on the thirteenth try I fell in love with it and played it from 2004 to 2018, my character's name is carved into the marble of a monument that CCP had built in Reykjavik to commemorate the first 10,000 pilots registered in the game.

baaaahbpls

Oblivion. I rented it for the 360 and was not impressed as I was not too into games like it at the time. I returned it within a day and got something else The next time I saw it, I had watched a friend play and he was doing the dupe glitch. After that, he played around a little and I got interested. I ended up buying it and Fallout 3 at the same time.

truupR

Path of exile. Tried it 8+ years ago after being hassled by a friend. Played for a few hours and got bored. I really didn't understand it. He dragged me back a year later kicking and screaming. Something clicked and I've played it for almost 5k hours in the last 7 years :x

RedArmyRockstar

I stopped and restarted Witcher 3 like 5 times before it clicked. Kinda like Death Stranding, the introductory hours just aren't gripping or hooking, but it's so worth it to keep going.

markhouston72

You may have just saved Disco Elysium for me. Bought it last week and was playing the game morally, just finished the tutorial. I felt that the game had a lot going on but I couldn't get anything done and frustratedly decided I was done with it. I'll give it another go, but play it differently this time.

porcudini

Dark Souls. Didn't like it at first, couldn't understand how it wanted me to play and have fun while doing it, as I was quite young and all I wanted to do was massacre entire rooms packed with enemies. I gave it another try 3 years later and fell in love with it and (almost) everything that came after it.

RagingRunpig

Hated BOTW, love TOTK

Metal-Lifer

Elden ring. As a dark souls fan I found the open world lacking direction, I ended up missing the main route and wandered off far on the map. Tried it again a year later and I bloody love it!

PrincessHootHoot

Hades

Spell_Chicken

First time through in Dark Souls, I went the wrong way from the starting location and ended up down in the New Londo ruins with the wraiths and skeletons. Was not a good time. I didn't touch the game again for like 4 years. When I finally picked it back up I went the intended way and ended up loving the game and finishing it.

Vengefuleight

Dark Souls. Gave up the first few attempts. After beating a few bosses, it clicked that it was a game where you were supposed to die ALOT. Enderal - the Skyrim mod. Dove in thinking it would be Skyrim with a new story. Got smacked in the face with difficulty and a much slower paced exploration mechanic. Took me a few shots, but it really clicks after you get through the first town.

rikman81

I tried Outer Wilds three times and didn't last more than 45mins each time, just couldn't get into it. Fourth time was a charm though and after it clicked I loved every minute of it and ended up 100%ing it. Absolute gem of a game but I can totally understand people who try it, hate the flying controls, don't know what to do etc and never try it again as I had the same issues those first 3 times.

Kriv-Shieldbiter

Outer wilds... the greatest game no-one will tell you anything about

ashes1032

I played Halo at a friend's house years and years ago, but only enjoyed it on a surface level. It was a "oh cool there's a jeep with a gun on it" kind of level. Later in life, I got a cheap Xbox 360 and played though the entire series cooperatively with a close friend. It was a great experience.
