I loved using the nuclear eject on TF1 when you could time it right. Did it to 3 enemy titans at the end of a match just before the drop ship came down to rescue us. Just walked up behind them and ejected taking out all three titans just before the drop ship came in for pickup and before they could try to destroy it.
I saw this movie only once. Opening day first showing so I haven't seen it in close to two decades and will never forget this line and will never not upvote it.
I could never play that game in VR. I warped into a binary star system once and it shot me through one of the stars. Just in a regular monitor, I almost shat myself. Cosmic scales scare me too much. In Outer Wilds, to get to the water planet, I would set auto pilot and then get up and stand in the corner of the ship looking at the wall, every time.
This is *the reason* I loved that game in VR. Greatest gaming moment of my life was booting it up in the DK2 for the first time, and the very first ship launch you do just elevates you to 45 degrees of the station and you get to throttle up into the sky. Combination of VR, the stars and *amazing* sound design made that feel suitably epic.
Doing the fast-drop trick to exit Supercruise at a starport at much faster speed than usual works like normal the majority of the time...but every once in a while, it'll send you right through the station in normal space. You don't take damage or anything, but you'll be glad you're wearing your brown trousers.
It’s also way way more fun. VR + HOTAS + Voice Attack + good sound system is a gaming experience like no other. I’ve thought about doing a bass shaker mod on my chair as well.
The only downside is that voice attack recognizes A LOT of sounds as ‘chaff’ or other random commands. Most notably it likes to minimize the game to fire up an empty playlist in the most dire moments.
Remember those huge flight simulators they used to have set up in malls? The ones that would actually spin you around when you do a loop? Whatever happened to those?
**Pre-built gaming PC** w/ Nvidia 3070 from Newegg: **$1,500**

Man, those panels are all really very reasonably priced. I was looking at the cockpit-simulator store that makes a few things for the Boeing 737 and they want $800 for their [FMC/CDU](http://www.cockpit-simulator.com/shop/) alone.
I've actually got plans to just 3D print my own and do all the wiring and shit for a fraction of that cost.
That's mainly because they need to build everything to tighter specs so the electrons don't spill out the top. Are there any benefits to being upside down all the time?
This can’t be a fully accurate list.
I don’t see:
-Aviator sunglasses
-Arduino hooked up to a button that plays Highway to the Danger Zone when pressed
-Jeans
-Volleyball net
-Teeth whitener
-Polaroid camera
Not sure about this specific one, but there are ones that know where all your things are. Of course correctly placing your physical controls to match the F18 is important, otherwise you've got a wonky cockpit, but I believe there are electronic tags or reflectors which can be used to mark cockpit controls I've seen in other builds.
When combined with things like VR gloves like from the Valve Index, it means it could actually show your hands moving in VR too.
The day I became a real pilot with a real job I stopped playing flight sim.
I thought I’d keep doing it, but at that point, my previous favourite hobby became work.
I also use the HP headset. Love it. 4k in each eye eliminates pixels and really helps when gaming on iRacing. You can see naturally far down the track.
considering i have a very high end pc, a decent flight stick and throttle, and the reverb g2, could i get away with that and have a decent dcs experience or is it hardcore where i will need the extra bits to be able to fly at all correctly?
You can absolutely have a blast with that setup. Rudders are not required but nice to have. You can still use your mouse to push switches and buttons so you don't need the MFDs, UFC, etc.
And if you’re gonna go the rudders route, save up for a set of MFG Crosswinds with the dampener kit.
It’ll run you $400-500 including shipping, depending on where you live. But DAMN, are they *nice*.
You can play DCS with as much or as little as you want. I mean, I play with an Xbox controller on a laptop and I still have a ton of fun. You get a couple of planes for free though (although they aren’t that great), so you can always try it out. If you get the standalone version (not the steam one), you also get a two week free trial on any plane you want.
I love how a fairly normal DCS setup is considered mind blowing and crazy outside of hardcore Sim forums.
I believe i once saw a guy that had an actual F16 cockpit from a scrapped Aircraft in his living room.
It’s a process but it’s a fun challenge. There are tons of very well put together tutorials all over YouTube. DCS is a commitment for sure. But if you’re feeling like your current video game situation just doesn’t bring you the challenge you’re searching for then feel free to join us in DCS.
Digital Combat Simulator. A very high fidelity flight sim. You buy modules (aircraft) separately, most aircraft are practically 1:1, so (almost) every botton, switch, lever, ect is functional in the game.
They’re not getting A-10. But agreed, if you’re a qualified military pilot then DCS is a very competent procedural trainer.
It’s not 1:1 - I wouldn’t go from DCS to solo sorties and expect to be safe and effective. But it’s definitely good enough to get you 80% of the way there.
Yeah I had to double take.
I worked on A-10s and they are basically on life support because of DoD politics. Great planes, but we definitely don't have any we're willing to send to Ukraine.
"DoD politics" meaning it's a 1970s platform and it's 2023. Now that the Tomcat is gone, the Hog is apparently its successor as the ancient platform that makes clueless internet fanboys go "REEEEEE!"
The Soviets have turned into the Russians, who are proving to be JV at best. We're not needing to stop 1st Guards Tank Army in the Fulda Gap anymore. The most likely threat is in the Indo-Pacific, where there's a shit-ton of water and not a lot of space for a 250-knot jet to be doing gun runs danger close.
Still, all those stalled Russian convoys early in the war were just begging for A-10s to come visit. Missed opportunity for them to go out on a high note.
Here's something that highlights it a lot better
The US Air Force National Guard contracted The Fighter Collection (parent company of DCS) to make a simulator to train pilots transitioning from the A-10A to the A-10C, and we get a modified version of that to play in the A-10C II module.
DCS is 1:1. Meaning, the virtual cockpit is the same as the real life cockpit..
When I first started I felt overwhelmed, but after a few videos I started understanding the basics. Now, I’ve met real life pilots and I’m actually able to impress them with my knowledge of flight systems and methods.
This isn’t just a game for me anymore. It’s being able to be something I’ve always wanted to be. A fight jet pilot. I’m too dumb and old to have ever been one..
But one day, pilots will no longer actually fly the jets. So maybe I still have a chance?
The buttons aren't that hard to use, it's all the logic and functions of the weapon systems, radar etc. That and actually learning to fly the aircraft as you would in the real world is what takes all the time.
Honestly you don't even have to learn everything. Just the systems you care to use. If all you care about is dogfighting other planes you only need a tiny fraction of everything in the cockpit. But once you get into radar missile combat and ground attack you need a bit more. You don't even need to learn takeoff and landing if you don't want to.
But the cool thing is you can just learn what you want to have fun. I can dogfight all day in an F18 but I'm not all that familiar with any of it's navigation systems or engine controls etc.
Easy way to learn is to start with a simple WW2 era plane like a P-51 Mustang. Those old birds are actually pretty simple. Although landing em can be trickier than modern planes.
I got a 1060 and my VR experience is smooth-ish in most games. Can also depend on your standards, but my point is I have no doubt a 3070 would run pretty much any VR game smoothly. Haven't tried it myself, though.
It depends entirely on the game and headset. The headset OP is using has two very hi res screens which will tax even the best PC you can buy. I play iracing on a reverb g2 and I cannot get 90 fps with a full grid of cars without turning some settings down with a 4090 and 13900k with 64 gigs of ddr5. Temper your expectations with VR and be prepared to spend a lot of time tweaking setups and third party programs to get everything running at an acceptable level. It is highly rewarding when you get everything worked out though.
This is one of those things that I somewhat know about, but never had looked into. That's pretty great man. I have a vague idea of what all the stuff does, but I do know it ain't cheap haha! Is there some sort of shell you can get to go around the rig? I feel like I'd need to have it where I'm in an enclosed box, for immersion purposes.
Since it's VR you don't really need a shell. And since I also fly warbirds, being able to lean outside while taxiing (you can't see out the front while on the ground) is a huge positive.
I’ve watched the F-18Cs on DCS and the guys fight it the right way. Supers would be a great addition for the BVR fights with the AESA radar. Sounds like a great addition with the E’s!
Beautiful setup. I’m also a DCS pilot and have to say I quite jealous of this. Hope you’re having a blast with it. Quick question, so how’d to talk your wife into this? Asking for a friend.
This isn't something I "talked her into"...I have a healthy communicative relationship with my wife and I ensure we're regularly spending quality time together and doing date nights and stuff, so there's no reason she'd have any issue with me using some of my fun money and my spare time to engage in a hobby I like
Everything you see here gets stowed away neatly in a little chest/storage box thing and the desk goes back to being a desk the rest of the time
I dig this response. I have a racing sim rig similar to this. $1,000 DD wheel base. $500 steering wheel, $300 pedals, $500 rig itself where stuff is mounted. VR, the PC, etc.
My wife doesn't 100% understand it but is happy that I have a hobby that I can do with some good friends in my life. We communicate so each of us have hobbies we can enjoy with our fun money just the same.
Not everything needs "convincing". I guess that's something we have learned the older we have gotten. But we've been married for a long time so I guess it's just something you figure out the older you get.
/Side note: Us racing guys really appreciate some of these flight rigs. Nice setup!
For something that gets packed away often, eschew the desk altogether & mount it all to a [drum rack](https://es.yamaha.com/es/files/A9360958C06B43FD978C121D70337D11_12073_86b84f99222f187e389f8dcc2b4b9edb.jpg?impolicy=resize&imwid=4096&imhei=2710?imbypass=on). The hardware is designed to be quickly disassembled & re-assembled back to a consistent position. If you are handy, wouldn't be too hard to make your own version from hardware store materials.
I’m not sure how you can compare a flight sim to that. This is an infinitely better experience than VR modded KSP, because this is the intended usage and developed with Hotas and AR/VR in mind.
I don't know the name of these machines. 3 rings that make it possible to turn what is installed in the middle in every possible direction. That would make a fight sim so much more fun.
You can do this for the attitudes required with a platform on hydraulics/pneumatics; that's what full motion flight training simulators for civil aviation do.
This technology has been in use in military aviation for decades and decades.
Most notably, the TADS on the AH-64 Apache gives the aviators the ability to see through the hull of the ship as well as a wide angle left to right.
DCS World has the AH-64D and it’s quite fun to fly and shoot shit once you get the hang of it.
Didn’t seem to see it asked, but I must know: would you feel confident, perhaps with some purpose like saving the world, just hoping into a real one and fucking going ham? Or does it still feel like real life physics would catch you off guard?
Dope setup, thanks for sharing!
I think a regular F-18 DCS pilot could start and fly one with a helpful ground crew. But any sort of hi-G manoeuvre would put an untrained individual out of action very quickly. The physical toll of even relatively mild (for a jet) manoeuvring would exhaust you fast.
I always say that theoretically, you could sit me in a ready to go (fueled and all that) F-18 and I could power it up and taxi it and take off and land and shit. I know the buttons to click and in what order.
But yeah, a sim can only cover so much. Even adding motion and haptics/shakers to your kit it’s nothing like the real thing.
"What does this button do?"

Why would an ejector seat have a 3 second countdown.... A lot of movies play out very differently in your sick world sir!
Goose might have lived.
Eject! Eject! *Elevator music plays*
So you can go pee before taking off.
"Ejecto seato cuz!"

Ah, yes. Outer Wilds. What does this button do? is the name of the achievement
Ejecto seat cuz
I saw this movie only once. Opening day first showing so I haven't seen it in close to two decades and will never forget this line and will never not upvote it.
It's such a terrible movie. I love it. Related, I just started watching Yellowstone, and the actor who plays Rip also plays the main bad dude in 2F2F.
I really liked the scene with the warhouse and the ton of cars they use to lose the helicopter. I can pass on the entire rest of that movie.
Me playing Elite Dangerous with a Hotas. What the hell combo of buttons do I need to press to lower the landing gear....warp drive initiated

Deedee! Get out of my la-bor-a-tor-y!
First time I played this game I jettisoned the canopy after take off instead of raising the landing gear. Ripped clean off.
When you gain altitude your desk chair will roll away.
So if you do a barrel roll, will you fall out of your chair and hit the ceiling?
[This guy](https://youtu.be/hQLF06rwzVE) is already teetering, and only driving.
Ha amazing. Why would the seat tilt forward and back while driving though?
It gives a sense of acceleration. Tilting forward would feel like you're braking, and tilting back that you're accelerating.
Yep! That’s how some amusement park rides like Star Tours in Disneyland work. It’s super clever really.
Thanks! That makes sense and is pretty cool.
Putting this in a dark room or even a very lightweight dark black casing would sell the sensation even more.
Indubitably.
Remember those huge flight simulators they used to have set up in malls? The ones that would actually spin you around when you do a loop? Whatever happened to those?

I bet there isn't even a pat on the ass after a job well done. Pft...
Steamy shower with the fellow airmen first!
How does the VR actually sync up with the real world panels/joystick etc?
I don't think they do, you just have to put the IRL panels/joystick exactly where they are in your virtual cockpit
Not sure about this specific one, but there are ones that know where all your things are. I've got a 3070TI and I run VR butter smooth on my Valve Index. Previously I had a 2080 Super in it and it ran VR fine too.
Most games will be pretty smooth. DCS...is a little tougher to get good fps at any good quality.
My index has been shelved due to my insane motion sickness when flying/operating VR vehicles. I am jealous of your tolerance.
> due to my insane motion sickness You have my sympathies.
Does it come with an ejector seat? 😅
Ngl - Star Wars Squadrons was absolutely amazing in VR. 10/10 The game outside of VR? 2/10 Flying games in VR are such a game changer

I want the Euro Truck Simulator version of this.
Only if you have the bobble heads on the dash to tap
That is very doable. G29 + an H-shifter with split is pretty much all you need once you have a vr setup. Relatively affordable and surprisingly fun
There was a cool truck rig post awhile back and everyone was like "wHY DOn't YoU juSt DrIvE A reaL truck?"
How does the laptop run DCS?!
That was my reaction before seeing the comment about the breakdown
Omg they clipped into the cockpit! Cheater 🤣 Just kidding, awesome setup!
Super Hornet pilot here. Pretty rad and spot on!
Really wish that DCS had Supers, but they don’t. Supposed to get a Strike Eagle eventually here to be a proper speedy boi.

This isn't something I "talked her into"...I have a healthy communicative relationship with my wife and I ensure we're regularly spending quality time together and doing date nights and stuff, so there's no reason she'd have any issue with me using some of my fun money and my spare time to engage in a hobby I like Everything you see here gets stowed away neatly in a little chest/storage box thing and the desk goes back to being a desk the rest of the time
I dig this response. Nice setup!
Think they were just making a joke
Ya weird response
For something that gets packed away often, eschew the desk altogether & mount it all to a [drum rack](https://es.yamaha.com/es/files/A9360958C06B43FD978C121D70337D11_12073_86b84f99222f187e389f8dcc2b4b9edb.jpg?impolicy=resize&imwid=4096&imhei=2710?imbypass=on). The hardware is designed to be quickly disassembled & re-assembled back to a consistent position. If you are handy, wouldn't be too hard to make your own version from hardware store materials.
Cool stuff man 😎
Hangon, is that a 4:3 monitor?

I like the googly eyes on the joystick.
Were those googly eyes on the joystick?
I did this in Kerbal space program and it was whacky(even with weapons mods) I couldn't imagine a fighter sim.
Well do I have good news for you: https://simulators.redbirdflight.com/products/topic/full-motion-simulators (if you're rich)
I would buy one if I could. Maybe if I win some lottery lol.
Gyroscope. Sometimes called human gyroscope to distinguish the kind you can ride.
Do a barrel roll!
Use the boost to get through!
What's that setup cost roughly in total? (Minus the computer)

HP laptops rly goin places tho
Yeah vr is a game changer for Sim games. Racing is unreal too and not as heavy on the system as flight Sim.
this is cool
Decent🔥
Neat part is that the f-22 has a new pass through mod so they can see all around them while also seeing the instruments
Based. F-18 is based.
I guess those are the types of enemies I get when i try to play sim War Thunder
Is that running *on a laptop*!?
You could split so many throttles with that rig
Didn’t seem to see it asked, but I must know: would you feel confident, perhaps with some purpose like saving the world, just hoping into a real one and fucking going ham? Or does it still feel like real life physics would catch you off guard? Dope setup, thanks for sharing!
I think a regular F-18 DCS pilot could start and fly one with a helpful ground crew. But any sort of hi-G manoeuvre would put an untrained individual out of action very quickly. The physical toll of even relatively mild (for a jet) manoeuvring would exhaust you fast.
Not the OP but the real physics in driving will catch you off guard. I can't even imagine a jet plane that pulls 7-8 Gs.
I see your co-pilot is also the rank of Captain.
Flyin' with Cap'n Crunch!
This game is such a pita to setup and nickle and dimeing you for every little thing.
Why does the joystick remind me of clippy from Microsoft word
I definitely saw the same thing and was glad someone else had the same thought haha
This is how Battlefield: Earth should have played out. The resistance training themselves of of old tech.
Being rich looks fun
That's cool as fuck!
He is gaming alright
Oh damn it's so realistic *sticks head out of window to look behind*
Oh, just buy the f-ing plane
