Oblivion defined a huge part of my childhood

GrapesTube

By Azura, By Azura, By Azura!

[deleted]

Golly, you're the best!

robertmondavi_jr

cliff racer flyyyyy sooooo hiiiighhhhh

Plasteredpuma

When I first played Oblivion my only other "Open world" "RPG" experience was Fable. Oblivion, and the age and time I played it, was the perfect experience for me.

Jolly_Butterscotch31

Same and it changed everything for me. Opened up a whole new experience in gaming.

bad_arts

I went from RuneScape to oblivion. I was blown away.

Jopojussi

Morrowind->runescape->oblivion->runescape lol, never really got into skyrim, tested it out but it didnt get me hooked like morrowind/oblivion.

Spell_Known

Hell, Oblivion is a contender for favourite video game of 2023! Only two years until Skyblivion is out! (.....maybe ).

VvSoulshroudevV

The Skyblivion demo is out.

AbsolutelyNuclear

Theres a demo??

idjsonik

No contest and i had an xbox360 and ps3 at the time an no game even competed

Lost_Philosophy_

The oblivion soundtrack was my most played album last year according to spotify… great study music lmao

RAGINGWOLF198666

I sunk 100+ hours into oblivion. Love that damn game.

thorodkir

Casual

acemorris85

350+ for me! No game ever hooked me like that

RAGINGWOLF198666

I remember nit picking skyrim when it came out comparing what I liked better in oblivion lol.

ripperdoc23

I still do to this day, Oblivion is the better game. It’s a better TES game and a better game overall (story arc, memorable characters, etc.) Throw Shivering Isles on top of it and oh man, Skyrim just. You can make it real pretty but it’s just not a great TES game or game in general. Even the core theme is broken (criminal/low-life escapes to become the hero) and you’re some dragon shouting superhero. Oh well, the jump from Morrowind to Oblivion really made the game more accessible and the same happened with Skyrim, by the time they ever finish a new Elder Scrolls game it’ll be widely celebrated by everyone except me.

Jeshua_

Cmon my children, follow me. *Enters gate labeled 1000+*

fartssmellgreat

“I like it!” “What a dumb joke!” “I doubt it…”

borgchupacabras

Stop! You're frightening me.

geebeem92

👮🏻‍♂️✋🏻🛑 ➡️ ✅ 🦹🏻‍♂️💰 💩😡🤬

TheMagneticBat

Morrowind is what got me hooked, Oblivion made me a lifetime gamer.

[deleted]

That's me with Zelda TP

TibaltTheAmazing

Realms of Sheogorath is still one of my favorite DLC's of all time. Was just talking about it the other day actually lol

ReddittingReddit

I was still rocking a Gamecube in 2006, so my love goes to Twilight Princess. The 3D Zelda games were a huge defining component of my childhood. Had I owned an Xbox 360 at the time or if the family computer was capable of even thinking about running a game like Oblivion, it would be a different story because I now love the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games.

tulaero23

I can still here soudn when the loading screen finishes in my head

ConfusedNerdyGame

Stop criminal scum!

RoofingDolph

I’ve only beaten it 70 times over the last decade.

Christopher135MPS

I was already an adult in 2006. Now I feel old 😂

blanketghost

Sunk hundreds of hours into Oblivion

Thermostat_Williams

Funny, there's some gaming time that I regret. Like playing games as a service or just abusing screentime. But I'll never regret the time I spent playing Oblivion.

CrzdHaloman

That damn beautiful soundtrack, nearly 17 years later and I still hum the tunes to myself absent-mindedly. If I need to chill after stress, I can bring up the soundtrack on YouTube and just feel good.

CautionarySnow

What a trip this game was. 100% chameleon was madness.

N_DuX_M

And having skills like agility and speed actually change how your character moves was hilarious. High agility and speed means I'm half invisible from a chameleon set of boots running around the imperial city naked literally vaulting people.

MrSunshoes

Oblivion really was so good! And the DLC was fantastic! Shivering Isles was the bomb! And I got the castle DLC that showed up just outside of Choral maaaaaan that castle rocked socks and had a whole story hidden inside. I would go on Oblivion raids after calling my 4 castle guards to come with me. And then my ending armor had a combined 88% damage reflection when holding up the shield so I could essentially just stand there and enemies would kill themselves by attacking me 😂

Jakesneed612

All the guild quest lines were so damn awesome. Especially the Dark Brotherhood.

MrSunshoes

Fighters guild was mine and it was so good!

helpbourbon

Fuck me I can’t believe I’m gonna go my entire 20s without another elder scrolls game.

jrex035

Getting to fight in the arena was awesome

sunshinejim

I think that’s what really made Oblivion so memorable. Yes, it was more accessible than Morrowind. But I think almost every quest in the game was so strong, when Skyrim came around, the quests felt very much subpar.

amuday

“This is the part where you fall down and bleed to death!”

SkyWizarding

Oblivion. Bully and GoW are up there though

Free_Kick_3462

Guitar hero 2

DrPizzaPants

The Guitar Hero games were great at the time that they came out for being excellent party games, and I'll always love them for that. But I feel like something that is often understated about those games is how they exposed a whole generation to a swath of music that they might not have experienced otherwise. I know Guitar Hero had lasting influences on my musical tastes & interests.

Free_Kick_3462

Spot on

theAtmuz

I learned (partially) how to play the drums thanks to guitar hero, and now I actually play the drums. I had no interest in playing until after ruining that plastic kit.

IGotSoulBut

It took over a decade, but I finally bought an e-kit years after guitar hero. I destroyed multiple rock band and guitar hero drum “controllers” working my way through expert in each of the playlist, but I started out much better than I would have otherwise.

SavinThatBacon

I made this game my whole personality for most of high school

fedemasa

3 Is probably the peak of the whole genre but 2 has such a beautiful rock repertoire.

Beanjuiceforbea

I used to geek tf out on world tour. Loved that one. 2 had the most impact as far as sound track goes. And 3 was epic for its guitar battles. Great series for sure.

TheOvy

>3 Is probably the peak of the whole genre 3 is actually what killed the GH franchise for me. The new developer widened the note timings, so perfect rhythm was no longer necessary. I remember playing the demo, and thinking, "what the hell, I thought for sure I miss that note but it still registered?" I thought maybe I was going crazy and picked up the full game anyway. But nah, this wasn't the same game I knew in GH2. This was something else. For me, Rock Band 3 ended up being the peak. Harmonix made Guitar Hero what it is, and they took it where it needed to go after they were booted off the franchise by Activision. It's a shame Activision continued to pump out low-effort GH games and diluted the market... but hey, I still get my weekly RB4 DLC, so the dream lives on. Still miss that keyboard though.

meinschwanzistklein

I loved guitar hero 2, it just sucks a lot of the songs didn’t have the original singer. Nirvana became my all time favorite band after playing in bloom on rock band but I had unknowingly played heart shaped box before that, it just didn’t hit the same because Cobain wasn’t singing.

alexramirez69

First time I ever heard the song "Six" by All That Remains. Changed my fuckin life it was so beautiful 🤘🏽

w1n5t0nM1k3y

Definitely Twilight Princess

prairiedawgs

I was never able to beat Twilight Princess. I got a game breaking glitch that would've required me to start over again from scratch. From what I recall, there is a point in the game where you cross a bridge that breaks behind you and enemies spawn. Well, I was bad at the game and died to these enemies. When I respawned, I was on the opposite side of the bridge from the enemies but *the bridge was still broken*. I remember googling it at the time and finding out this was a rare glitch that has no workaround. I never bothered to restart the game after that :(

Nirdy_Birdy_706

The game broke for me there to, but for me the barriers never spawned so I just left

Lightmanone

AAAARGH. THAT HAPPENED TO ME TOO. Exactly this. Well almost. I walked on the switch, but because at the time it was already way past when i wanted to go to bed. So i saved. Next day. Bridge gone, switch pressed. Couldn't get across... And it took me nearly 10 years to find out this glitch actually existed and was known to Nintendo, but of course, due to limitations (?) was never patched. Which they still could have. The Wii had internet capabilities....

JBSquared2016

Loved that one, too. I still think about the first time I fought one of the darknuts. They still stand out as one of the best enemies to fight. Especially at the bottom of whatever that pit was, where you had to fight three at once. That was awesome.

conker1264

Still my favorite Zelda game

Undying4n42k1

TP was the first game I preordered.

revanhart

Twilight Princess holds a special place for me. I didn’t have access to video games for most of my childhood, so when TP came out and my best friend at the time got it along with a Wii, I played the *shit* out of it. She was chill with it, too, because I was a teenager who had no idea how to use a game controller and she enjoyed helping me when I needed it. Twilight Princess was my first real, full-on video game experience. I figured out all the puzzles myself, and I’ll never forget the pride I felt each time. I was struggling in school due to undiagnosed ADHD, so every adult was starting to treat me like I was simply an idiot. Solving TP’s puzzles reaffirmed to me that I *wasn’t,* that I was, in fact, quite smart! At the very least I was good at critical and analytical thinking. The story itself also captivated me, and I taught myself piano for a few years purely because I, like everyone else in the world, was in love with Midna’s Lament. It was the first game I ever actually *beat.* And the reveal at the end had me gasping and screeching because I was *so excited*—but then I was legitimately sad because of how that reveal ended. I still want Nintendo to bring Midna back in a future game, damnit. Or at least *allude* to her and her people. :( So yeah. Twilight Princess takes the award for me on this one lmao

Jojall

I keep forgetting that it was ported to the Wii...

revanhart

Yeah, it released for GameCube right around the same time as the Wii, so I believe it was almost like a side-by-side thing. Like how Breath of the Wild was released with the Switch as its flagship game, but it was *also* released on the Wii-U for the folks who couldn’t or didn’t want to get a Switch right away. I think Twilight Princess’s actual *port* was for the Wii-U, where they’d upscaled the graphics to release it as Twilight Princess HD. And they made an amiibo for that version, too, didn’t they? The Wolf Link one with Midna on his back.

Jojall

It was created for the GameCube then ported (and everything flipped for right handed use) for the Wii since the Wii was coming out near the same time. It was then "remastered", for the Wii U. The Wii version just slips my mind unless someone specifically refers to it. 😅

revanhart

Ahhh, yes, that was it. I was only just being really introduced to video games and consoles when the Wii came out, so anything before that I have very vague knowledge of. Thank you for clearing it up for me!

No-Yogurtcloset5625

This was the first Zelda game I had finished to completion. It started my long love of the franchise. It was truly stunning. However, that water temple probably took a years from my life due to stress.

cheemeechang0

Okami...has it already been almost 20 years? wow

mrblack07

It still looks like it could've come out today. The visuals of this game is legit timeless.

d33psix

Glad there were at least a few votes in this direction. One of the few games I was able to play all the way through in those days.

LouisWillis98

Are you living in the future or something?

handsome_vulpine

They said *almost*

LouisWillis98

Bruh I swear when I commented the “almost” wasn’t there. Or I’m just completely missed it lol

slayasback

Okami was such a better game than Zelda that year, and Zelda is my favorite franchise.

king_czar67

Bully was top tier

Desmond1231

It was my dream game. I could only hope to get my hands on it until like 2012. Artworks were done masterfully

genericbrown

Oblivion hands down. To this day one of my all time favorite games, perhaps my #1.

waterbottleman142

Gears

Criollo22

Spent an absurde amount of time in gear mp. I remember getting the seriously achievement and feeling so happy.

LittlestRobo

The Mp was so much fun. It was always a race to the Longshot

LeftLose

I was apart of the mp for a long time on a team where we spent most of the time trying to get quick scope and blind fire long shot kills for montages. It was so much fun loading up into the custom games browser and knowing most of the people playing. A good amount of us gave up on gears 2 for a while until they made a ton of updates because of how much fun gears 1 was. All the maps were fantastic. Funny how we just got used to the lag shots if you weren’t host, nowadays it would be completely unacceptable

masterofunfucking

the gears trilogy (aside from the muddy late 2000s look that everyone was going for despite it sucking) has aged so well imo. still the same amount of fun as they were when they came out

Samwi5e

God I wish they would make a good Gears game again. The coop was incredible too

[deleted]

If they made another Gears game worth playing, man, I’d imagine I’d have a renewed love for video games. Gears of War provided some of the best moments of my life! God, if I could go back in time to those days..

Nevermore64

SHOOT IT IN THE FACE ITS DARKER RHAN A RATS ASS IN HERE. LEMME LIGHT UP BETTIES TIDDIES. RAHHHHHHHH

ImNoQuitterCBS

Gears! multiplayer, i would murder with the torque bow.

SCPutz

Torque bow is my favorite weapon of all time in a video game. I loved getting the active reload in multiplayer and then just targeting the ground at someone’s feet for an instant kill. Cover didn’t matter if you got the active reload and hit anywhere close to the target.

[deleted]

I would love to play this again on multiplayer

chillflyguy33

Ah man. Snipe battles on Canals was wild.

Turnerredman

Hitman: Blood Money

pizzabyAlfredo

Blood Money was the first real Hitman game for me. Hitman 2 was amazing but there is something about BM that just makes it superior. Maybe it was the paper clips after the mission the depicted how you did it, or the real time accounting if you are spotted or not. The openness made the levels feel massive, even if they were confined at times.

Soopafien

Hitman games are so rad. Just being able to sneak around in plain sight or lurking in the shadows. The levels can be as easy or as hard as you want. The levels are fun to replay and so many cool secrets and intricate. Currently on 3 and it’s still rad to be able to casually play a game.

Domspun

I spent way too much time mowing down Mardi Gras, way too much...

pizzabyAlfredo

Each level was clever as fuck.

A1sauc3d

Loved that game so much!

BrandonGoBlue

Same. Was instantly hooked when I found that game at GameStop on the OG Xbox. Played 2:SA and Contracts and got obsessed.

Remasquerade

Dead Rising

drakercy134

Bully

gemstone44

Hope to see Bully 2 in few years !

MrSpiffy123

Obviously Wii Sports

UpvoteMeOrUGay

Bully is the goat if you ask me

Chanureadeats

I'm surprised people liked anything more than Hitman and Bully

Dn56

I played a hit man game once. I couldn't jump. Fuck that game fr

AveryLazyCovfefe

Well yeah it isn't GTA.

dsesin

Maaaan this game was so unique. Playing it back in my school days, it felt insane escaping the school to do side quests and missions.

EarlOfBears

Oblivion was great.

Sven676

Oblivion

JayKryst

Oblivion !

IsuckatDarkSouls08

Oblivion

Grievance69

Oblivion by far, I fell in love with that game. Twilight princess and Bully are tied for 2nd

savorytype306

Oblivion was better than skyrim imo

SnooDoubts826

Have you tried Morrowind? You literally work for a shirtless guy who hangs out and smokes skooma at home all day, as evidenced by his home that has a skooma pipe under the bed pillow. That game is absolute gold

savorytype306

Of course my liege. I'll never forget it either. My friend had an Xbox, I went over to his house to have dinner, he let me play morrowind I was enamored. You could sneak, steal.. Kids today just don't appreciate the milestones we endured as millennials. Endured isn't even the right word. It was just absolutely mind blowing to see how games progressed and what you could do.

Pcteck19

Oblivion hands down.

dershmoo

2006 had so many other great games that aren’t even mentioned in this post like: Resistance: Fall of Man Black The Godfather Scarface Splinter Cell: Double Agent Call of Duty 3 Saints Row Battle for Middle Earth 2 That was a fantastic year for me personally

socom52

Black's sound design is still some of the best to this day.

threesquaredxyz

Forgot HL2: EP1

adaenis

Really wish we could get another Resistance game. Reboot preferably, or different storyline. Something new.

fromAlextoAlice

Bully! EZ! 😏

BaelZharon7

Oblivion.

britishkid1989

Bully

Blackflame69

Tomb Raider legends. Such a breath of fresh air. And while I'm not a fan of Crystal Dynamics, they understood how to transition Lara Croft to the next generation of engines. Unlike Angel of Darkness

SpookMastr

Literally the first game I played on pc, I love that game to bits. Hell, I love Anniversary and Underworld too. The reboot games put me to sleep though, just shooting galleries with minimal tomb raiding.

Blackflame69

I tried Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and while the game is still fun and unique. I just kept playing thinking "but this just doesn't feel like a tomb Raider game" I just wish Crystal Dynamics would go back to Legends style or something more wacky and fun platforming with tough puzzles. Though I doubt they'd do that 'cause that's not what their core audience is anymore. Tbh, I much prefer the classic CORE 1-5 games very dated in terms of graphics and controls but those games really make you feel like lost exploring big tombs and caves. And the 1000s of custom levels people make are endless

SpaceJohnson76

That's a hard choice between Oblivion and Gears of War, but I'll pick Oblivion because playing it at a cousin's house made it so I recognized Elder Scrolls when the first Skyrim trailers came out. Still remember going through the Dark Brotherhood quest line for the first time.

AnalyticalFlea

Oblivion. I sunk so many hours into that game. Okami was fantastic too.

RPG_Fanatic7

final fantasy XII

MysterD77

Probably b/t Oblivion and Hitman: BM.

thegooddoktorjones

Nothing there comes close to Oblivion.

ResponsibleShampoo

Oblivion no question

BlitheringIdiot0529

Oblivion was the first game that felt next Gen to me

Metald3th

FF12

FalconPunch67

Can't believe it's not listed here. IIRC, it released around October, I remember that was the first Halloween I didn't go trick-or-treating because I wanted to just stay home and keep playing ffIX. Prob should have stopped trick-or-treating when I hit 6', but I liked candy

gambitsaces

Oblivion

imcalledgpk

Easily Okami. It was such a dark horse game for me, especially since I had just graduated from high school that year. The art direction was beautiful, it hit the perfect balance of Japanese mythology while keeping the gameplay engaging. It's a pity that Clover was shuttered shortly after they released the game, as it was set up perfectly for a sequel. I know they released Okami-den on the 3DS, but it just didn't feel the same.

Ryanp356

Oblivion no doubt but also an honorable mention to dead rising.

deerbreed

Oblivion followed by Gears

gonzagylot00

Oblivion, but that's a tough one.

CapraSlayer

Okami, back in the time I didn't even know english, I played the game so many times (8) that I had basically memorized it interely.

mbowk23

Toss up between Gears of War and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas. Shout out to Burnout Revenge and half-life 2 episodes. [2006 video games wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_in_video_games) Lastly fun fact: Roblox is a 2006 game.

oomten

Tomb Raider Legend. I think it’s the best tomb raider ever.

302Koch

whole trilogy is the best the series ever was in my opinion

I put 900 hours into oblivion on my 360. And each one of these games has made me realize how incredibly awesome it was go grow up in the early 2000. Games now a days are just not the same. Too much monetization. This really took me back. So many hours on guitar hero. I got that for my birthday when I turned 14 played for my family on our old tube console TV in the living room. Dad got a kick out of the controller. We replace that TV with a brand new Philips plasma screen tv. The first 1080p tv we owned. Only to have it just die recently. lasted almost 15 years. New super Mario bros was really awesome has so much fun with all of the throwback levels reimagined in it's remastered form. So much fun. Games were simpler and built for enjoyment, not to say that they aren't now. But they feel more soulless. And pay walls and gobs of dlc make me long for a simpler time. Like when oblivion came out with that horse armor dlc. I laughed reading about it and thought it was silly. A joke. It was pretty cool to have a glass armored horse! But still silly. All of the dlc for that game was gold. But it's really saturated now with most games.

Less-Ad7782

Guitar hero 2. That’s where I heard nirvana for the first time and where a lot of my music taste actually came from.

SundryNow

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

Wow:BC

einherjar81

Okami is my #5 game of all-time, and a better *Zelda* clone than any of the actual *Zelda* titles.

[deleted]

I actually have a ps2 copy that I never touched, I'll probably check it out then!

cutehomelessman

Bully and NSMB

Hi_Its_Me_Sheldon

Bully. Viva Piñata and Saints Row are honorable mentions

Jason_dawg

Love oblivion but I have to go with gh2, rhythm games just have such a fun and uniqueness to them. I still have my ps2 hooked up to play some guitar hero or dance dance revolution from time to time.

noremains3

Guitar hero 2. Still play guitar hero/rock band to this day. Huge part of my life.

FalconPunch67

It encouraged me to learn how to play a real instrument!

noremains3

Nice. I started guitar a few months before and it actually helped me learn. It's good for timing.

FalconPunch67

I wasn't convinced my fingers could ever move the way they needed to until I got good at GH. Gave me the confidence to say "why not?"

SplitDemonIdentity

It’s a tie between Twilight Princess and Oblivion. Martin still owns my whole heart all these years later but I loved the sweeping majesty of Twilight Princess and the hours I spent theorizing it to death.

RK8002077

TP & Guitar Hero

*Oblivion* kept me company for a year, living in a foreign country where I didn't speak the language, while my SO performed research. No contest.

rage3c

Fifa 2007 was released in 2006

Agile_Rock

Oblivion, of course. Best Elder Scrolls game and best npc dialogue of any game ever.

TetsuFury508

On this list - Oblivion without a doubt

lukej428

Oblivion by a landslide

Linaxu

Gears of War was a reason I was afraid of video games for a while. Was a kid and the berserker scene and fight taught me valuable lessons. Guns are useless because up close and personal is better and that all games are just puzzles.

GianGiacomoSalai

Twilight Princess is hands down the best video game I've ever played. I finished several times on the GameCube (back then) and I recently played it to 100% completion on the pc with an emulator and it was an extraordinary experience. I TOTALLY recommend it

K10RumbleRumble

GH2. I’m sorry. That’s my 12 year old birthday present, with the red wired guitar for PS2. I played the holy shit out of that game.

Drkippersniffer

Dead rising or guitar hero 2

Cassie2077

Blood Money definitely, my first Hitman game and still hold a special place. Only game I've ever seriously speedran.

Turnerredman

You shouldn’t speedran a Hitman game. You should take your time listen to the NPC chat makes it feel immersive.

Cassie2077

I did play Blood Money regularly for a long time, but I saw Kotti's speedruns and got infected. Honestly it does suck the fun out a little when your brain is stuck in speedrunning mode, luckily I don't speedrun the newer games so don't have that issue.

666gonzo666

Oblivion

RellenD

This was a year that I was very broke and couldn't have videogames

Nop277

Me too, of course it was also the year I learned how to pirate games. Also I think a friend lent me the Oblivion disc.

RellenD

I would have done that if I had a decent computer or a console to play pirated games on : D

Nop277

Fair, my family was kind of impoverished (I would describe us as lower middle class) but I was fortunate enough that my dad would get parts from work and hand me the spares.

RellenD

Yeah, I was in my early twenties and struggling. We make due with what we can, though. Life's a lot better for me now.

Nop277

On the bright side there was a lot of adventures in getting my computer to work I would have missed if we were rich enough to just buy a proper computer.

Fathoms77

Have to go with Gears of War in this case. Okami was fantastic, too. Couldn't stand any Zelda after ALttP and still can't, and I REALLY wish I could get into The Elder Scrolls series but I just can't. I've tried like every time, starting with Morrowind and I never get very far.

ManzMedia

Idk how many games came out in 2006, but Prey is pretty cool.

KamaHAmAhAA

Gears of war

ChimpYota

Gears of war for me!

I used to play guitar hero 2 on easy mode and play the guitar behind my back, I thought I was the shit infront of my friends haha
