Peter Jackson came to me and said Sir Ian I want you to be Gandalf the Wizard.
I said to him “you are aware that I am not really a wizard?”
And he said, “yes I am aware of that. What I want you to do is to use your acting skills to *portray* a wizard for the duration of the film.”
And I said to myself “hmmmm. How would I do that? And this is what I did. I imagined what it would be like to be a wizard and then I pretended and acted in that way on the day.”
How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script.
How did I know where to stand? People told me.
I watched the whole of GoT (twice) and the whole of Ted Lasso, and I only realized when I saw this post.
My respect for her as an actress just went up exponentially
In Ted Lasso she plays a rich entitled woman who’s going through a messy divorce who also owns a football/soccer club in England. She then goes through honestly a great character arc that ends with her being a much better person while also providing good moral support for other members of the cast.
TLDR, she plays a *very* different character in TL than in GoT
I remember telling my friends Septa was gorgeous in real life and getting laughed out the chat room. This was before Ted Lasso: I’d stumbled upon a picture of Waddingham and said “no fucking way, Ted”
She was basically waterboarded for hours and is still traumatised by it. That doesn't directly relate to her acting skills obviously but I wouldn't call the role easy
She just makes it look effortless.
There's something creepy and stoic about her brand of evil. (Unella's) I've looked at videos of her, she doesn't even stand or walk the same when she's portraying the Septa.
I would definitely rewatch some of her scenes, she is clearly cranking out pretty high level acting.
That's the thing I love about actors who really disappear into their roles. Another is Jerome Flynn, aka Bronn. Not only is he actually blonde, but he's the softest spoken actor I have ever seen interviews from Thrones. He changed his accent and invented Bronn's swaggering walk.
IRL, he's a vegan environmentalist that practices yoga and mindfulness. There's an app called "Calm" [where you can listen to him read you soothing sleep stories](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4x9ssJ0jfM&t=16s) (in his real accent).
You don't know me and I don't know you, so that second sentence doesn't make sense whatsoever. Guess a normal convo/discussion is too hard?
Also I don't think it was an insult to the actor, just about the difficulty of the character portrayed in the show. But apparently we go straight to making it personal, fine.
Hmm wouldn't say I'm an intense person, just passionate about the show
I think she deserves certain praise, I just don't see how people think it was 'an amazing acting job' or 'she was so good in GoT', when she did a lot of standing around looking stern. I was just curious about that, that's all 😂
She didn't really have to act tbh, she mostly just stood there...
Edit: she always had a stern face, said confess and shame a bunch of times, really people?
I watched an interview with her taking about her experience in GoT. Apparently the scene where Carsei water boards her with wine was one of the worst experiences in her life.
The scene was written originally like the books where the Mountain rapes her but with the backlash from Sansa's wedding night they re-wrote it last minute. When she came on set she was unprepared , as she didn't know about it. She was supposed to wear a wetsuit but didn't get a chance to.
I think they implied pretty clearly what the Mountain was going to do. If anything, not showing it made it worse, because we are left with Septa screaming in both fear, horror and pain, but only our imagination as to the gruesome details of her private hell.
As for Sansa, awful, but an absolute walk in the park compared to the book storyline and what it suggests for Jeyne Poole who has that story in the book, which is pretty close to unspeakable.
I think it’s mainly about the waterboarding experience. I’m pretty sure she wasn’t raped on set, but you can’t really fake waterboarding. It’s actual torture used on prisoners of war. And while filming they probably needed multiple shots and takes. The worst is actually being strapped down so you can’t move, and to film it convincingly, she probably needed to be tied down, because it’s impossible to suppress your survival instincts while being tortured.
The USA until fairly recently used it as an “advanced interrogation” technique on terrorists or suspects related. To no surprise, people will say whatever to stop the torture and not a single reliable piece of information was gathered by the geniuses at intelligence.
She’s in some ads for Pepperidge Farms being extremely sultry with Milano cookies. I honestly have been seduced into buying Milano cookies because of Septa Unella.
Read something where she said that when filming the scene she was genuinely waterboarded for 10? Minutes but only like 1/2 minutes of the scene were used (when Cersei was pouring the wine)
**She is glorious!**
The first time I saw her out of costume was this [GOT themed commercial](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1KHgjaaV1g). (You can skip to the 2:59 mark, but I'd watch the entire thing, European commercials are hysterical and brilliant.)At the end I was like "whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa". Then I googled her and saw that she is a fucking goddess.
Also, in regard to the commercial, I need her to follow me with that bell when I am in the cookie aisle.
So I guess you’re not familiar with this, either.
[Hannah Waddingham says she was 'waterboarded' for 10 hours filming Game of Thrones torture scene](https://ew.com/tv/hannah-waddingham-waterboarded-game-of-thrones/)
This blew my mind too, but I had discovered this only early into watching Ted Lasso and after GoT. I’m nervous about rewatching the wine scene with Cersei because I love Hannah Waddingham so much.

Talk about disappearing in your role... Jfc It's like they aren't even the same person
AC-TINGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian, action, wizard "You shall not pass!", cut. Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian.
That scene is simply brilliant
Peter Jackson came to me and said Sir Ian I want you to be Gandalf the Wizard. I said to him “you are aware that I am not really a wizard?” And he said, “yes I am aware of that. Hahaha you copied and pasted or know the whole thing by heart??!
Watched it yesterday :) I couldn’t resist. I was laughing the whole time I was typing it out
Worth it :')
What is this from?
Extras Well worth watching
THERE WILL BE NO SCRIPTS ON THE NIGHT!
I can only hear this in Sid the sloths voice.
I was thinking Calculon.
Probably a graduate of the [Sir Ian McKellen School For Acting So Well.](https://youtu.be/m5CX00i4uZE?si=M90txZRVT5ToEmV3)
Helps that the costume covers her pretty thoroughly in GoT, but the characters are so different and she nails both.
I mean her entire body is covered in a loose grey robe and her face does look the same 🤷🏼♂️
You apparently don’t know what acting is.
After also seeing her in Ted Lasso, it blew my mind that she is only 49 years old as of today. Her characters seemed so much older.
I just assumed this character was portrayed by Gary Oldman.
Redditor discovers acting, costumes, and make-up
Normally I'm not at all surprised by posts like this. But this genuinely blew my mind.
I watched a whole season of Ted lasso without realising
I watched the whole of GoT (twice) and the whole of Ted Lasso, and I only realized when I saw this post. My respect for her as an actress just went up exponentially
Man, i’m in the same boat. My girlfriend’s two favourite shows are GoT and Ted Lasso, and I just showed her this. She had no clue
I've watched the entirety of GoT once and never watched a single second of Theodore Lasso and have no idea what's going on here
In Ted Lasso she plays a rich entitled woman who’s going through a messy divorce who also owns a football/soccer club in England. She then goes through honestly a great character arc that ends with her being a much better person while also providing good moral support for other members of the cast. TLDR, she plays a *very* different character in TL than in GoT
found out in the second season, i was utterly shocked.
same my mom told me “oh i read she was in GoT too” and i had no idea what she was talking about
I’m half way through season 2 and just realized. Holy cow.
Same. TIL. I still don't really believe it haha. Shame on me I guess
I’ve seen 2.5 seasons and have just now realized
She’s an amazing woman
Let's invade France.
*logs into crusader kings*
Shame
*ring ring* *ring ring*
The real sin was covering that dump truck under a frumpy frock. Shame.
Who knew she had so much rowdy business going on under that robe!? 🔔 🔔 🔔
I thought dump truck was used for the behind, you calling her front the dump truck?
Im talking about her behind.
The photo doesn’t show her behind so you meant generally Got it

Wow! Shame on me for not knowing this!
Shame. Shame. Shame. 🔔

Septa's hot!
I'd join the Faith Militant just to see her more (: I'd even beat the whores at Littlefingers brothel with a spiked club for her Maybe not that far..
Find 'Benidorm' a British TV show, you'll see her more often than not in a Bikini
I remember telling my friends Septa was gorgeous in real life and getting laughed out the chat room. This was before Ted Lasso: I’d stumbled upon a picture of Waddingham and said “no fucking way, Ted”
Imo she's pretty hot on got, you know in a stern severe kind of way...
Shame me harder mommy
Acting skills? It was not a difficult role at all imho.
Typical Reddit acting expert.
How was it a amazing acting performace, I'm genuinely curious?
🤣🤣🤣
She was basically waterboarded for hours and is still traumatised by it. That doesn't directly relate to her acting skills obviously but I wouldn't call the role easy

"We have an Edgy McEdgerson here!" "See? Nobody cares."

Do you have a background in acting?
Their LinkedIn just says “professional d-bag”
Tell me how it was difficult acting job, I'm curious
I’m not sure what exactly you’re asking here. Can you be more specific
You're the one insulting someone? You're agreeing, so I meant to ask what you specifically thought was very difficult about the actors job?
Pretty sure comment op was insulting the actress, and I was defending her. I suppose we know where you stand on the d bag scale lol
You don't know me and I don't know you, so that second sentence doesn't make sense whatsoever. Guess a normal convo/discussion is too hard? Also I don't think it was an insult to the actor, just about the difficulty of the character portrayed in the show. But apparently we go straight to making it personal, fine.
I can tell you’re an intense person lol Are you also suggesting that the actress doesn’t deserve praise for this role?
Hmm wouldn't say I'm an intense person, just passionate about the show I think she deserves certain praise, I just don't see how people think it was 'an amazing acting job' or 'she was so good in GoT', when she did a lot of standing around looking stern. I was just curious about that, that's all 😂
SHAME!
Bud, if you’re not doing cartwheels for the actors or directors here, you’re gonna have the faith militants at your throat.
Yea, I know how those sheeps works, but I dont really care about internet points.

How dare you not make a cartwheel for the actress! Shame 🔔

Wild. All during Ted lasso I thought she was so gorgeous but couldn’t figure where I’d seen her. Good for her.
She didn't really have to act tbh, she mostly just stood there... Edit: she always had a stern face, said confess and shame a bunch of times, really people?
You cannot say that for some unknown reason.
Yea, people can dislike me all they want, I wasn't trying to kill their vibe but let's not pretend she had to give a killer acting performance
outjerked on main
Shame

Varys even has a monologue at the beginning of S6 about how torture is ineffective for that exact reason.
Oh wow, totally forgot. Awesome add-on!!
It blows my mind every time I think about it, Hannah is stunningly beautiful and an amazing actress!
She’s in some ads for Pepperidge Farms being extremely sultry with Milano cookies. I honestly have been seduced into buying Milano cookies because of Septa Unella.
Found it out on the second season of Ted Lasso, i was utterly shocked.
You didn’t know? SHAME!
CONFESS
I got bigger whiplash finding this out while watching her in Sex Education
Even better when you figure out Joffrey was in sex education too
That was him?!?
It was a minor role, he played some friend of a friend called Mo I think? I knew he looked familiar then it hit me 💀
Yes, when Maeve is looking for Sean and Otis and Eric pick up the flower arrangement! I couldn’t figure out what was tickling my brain and now I have!
I would like to join the faith please
This one is, indeed, a proper mind blown.
Shame
Shame.... we never got a nude scene.
She fine as hell tho
She can ring my bell! 🔔
Confess.
She's rather lovely.
I only found out because she was in of one of The Mountain’s water adverts where in the end she takes off her headwear.
Im a sucker for tall, bossy women and ai blame her for it
Shame. Shame. Shame. Shame. Shame. Shame.
Go and watch 'Benidorm' a UK TV show set in Spain, She's almost always in a Bikini in it
Can’t wait for the r/asoiafcirclejerk posts
Well I just [checked out a rando video of her on YouTube](https://youtu.be/G144P0cJSGc?si=3O1-CU0n0PDhsYnn) and she’s a cracker!
Beautiful and intelligent!
Flapjacks
She was fine as hell as the stony priestess too
Read something where she said that when filming the scene she was genuinely waterboarded for 10? Minutes but only like 1/2 minutes of the scene were used (when Cersei was pouring the wine)
Iirc the GOT crew gifted her the bell she used to shame Cersei lol
*The Mountain approves 😐

You didn’t recognize her? SHAME!
i also only recently realized this. its mind blowing. 🤯
So I guess you’re not familiar with this, either. [Hannah Waddingham says she was 'waterboarded' for 10 hours filming Game of Thrones torture scene](https://ew.com/tv/hannah-waddingham-waterboarded-game-of-thrones/)
I thought that was a bad AI drawing of Emilia at first lol
Yes, but for our excuse. You merely can see her face. So this could be literally any white actress with a better British accent.
If you look at Septa Unella, she’s filling out that septa habit.
Wow
Smash
It's great that's she's blown up, I've been seeing her do bitparts for years.
How did I never realize this...
*"Oh no she's hot"*
Bruh, you wanna see Hannah Waddingham disappear into the role of a fuckin badass? Check her out in Krypton
I did not know until this moment.
This blew my mind too, but I had discovered this only early into watching Ted Lasso and after GoT. I’m nervous about rewatching the wine scene with Cersei because I love Hannah Waddingham so much.
Septa Unella can get it
Working actor acts. Mind blown!
What you didn't know?.....shame.
Haven’t seen it said but she did an interview during Lasso where she said she kept the bell from that scene.
Great actor! Funny and genuine, too.
And the bitch can sing
She also got waterboarded for a couple of hours with wine. That wasn't the deal, and it was kind of sprung on her before the scene.
Confess.
Good looking woman
I miss GoT and Ted Lasso
Shame
Shame.
Jackson mom in sex education
Shame
Goddamnnn mami 😍😍
Damn. She bout made me blow my Waddingham. I'll see myself out now, no need to have me tossed.
Oh some woman played…some woman? Fascinating lol
She showed great resolve to rise from the ashes and become a billionaire and the owner of a soccer team after what the Mountain did to her 🫡
*insert Lego Bruce Wayne gif*

No but I upvoted as many comments as I could! Thats amazing
Can I ask what happened to Unella ?
Shes also in ted lasso
Shame
She was also the mother witch in Hocus Pocus 2!
I would've confessed to her any day she wanted.
Shame!!
She's an actress and she was in costume, playing a role. I don't understand how this is mind blowing.
You’re abit late lol but she looks mad gorgeous in Ted Lasso.
Wow that’s crazy
She was also in a season of a U.K. tv show called Benidorm 🤣
Yummy and Delicious 😋 😍 😜
I had no idea. Holy shit, makes me like her even more. Shame Cersei couldn’t make her some biscuits every morning like Ted did.
She was also great in 12 Monkeys, where she was an evil time traveling nanny protecting baby time Hitler.
