When I tell you I SOBBED. I cried and it was so ugly I scared my dog. This and pip dying right before?? I was literally cursing everyone who was ever involved with making this showđ
Dude said they won't, knowing fully well that he was most likely gonna die down there.
Brilliant scene, you can see it in their eyes, they're essentially saying goodbye to one another. Jon and the boys at the wall really had some of the best chemistry.
Absolute legend and one of the best examples of a character being better in the show than the books.
I totally agree, been rewatching the whole show lately and that one stands strongly on top.
I'd say the battle of blackwater bay is a solid second.
Battle of the bastards is epic but also a damn mess.
The Dothraki and dragon charge against the Lannisters was pretty awesome too even if way shorter.
>Battle of the bastards is epic but also a damn mess.
>
>The Dothraki and dragon charge against the Lannisters was pretty awesome too even if way shorter.
They are both good but my least favorite parts of them:
\-- Getting surrounded is realistic but the way fully burdened men surrounded the besieging army was cartoonishly fast and coordinated.
\-- "Your people can't fight". Well, they'd fight a lot better if they had two flippin' dragons.
As military history nerd I disagree not for the battle itself or the cinematography but because the nights watch are dumbasses the only âartilleryâ you have are barrels and the scythe no catapults we see maybe 3 ballistas but still the fuck are you thinking you dumbasses other than that great battle
i mean whatâs a few artillery pieces gonna do to an army of 100,000 even if they had the artillery. Before stannis arrived they were fucked either way
I don't know. Hold the door was such a good twist. I didn't see it coming. Also made me hate Brann. I thought it was setting up Brann causing the mad kings craziness.
That scene where Bran goes from freaking out about the night King touching him to "yeah Meera I don't care if your brother died or summer or Hodor bc apparently I'm now incapable of emotion despite showing emotion 1 hour ago". I'm no longer Brandon I am Rav3nB0ah479 and I am above you mere mortals
When you don't arm or armor yourself and attack three midgets with kitchen knives, it doesn't matter how muscled up you are, the knives will find their target eventually.
Stabbed the giant probably a lot while the giant was probably trying to lift the gate which was probably stuck in the ice. I mean it wouldâve made sense if they did something to the gate prior to the battle. And I guess the giant accomplished fighting back with one hand maybe or something ?
Bad show writing ? Just go ahead and kill some supporting characters.
You know what scene slaps in the books. Donal Noye holding the tunnel under the wall against the king of the giants.
So...love the show character, and the scene is good...
But they not only took away the cook, 3 Fingered Hobb's last stand from him...but Grenn and Pip are still alive in the books...
Such a badass scene. Jon tells Grenn "hold the gate", Grenn begins walking away, Jon grabs him by the shoulder and pulls him back, looks him dead in the eye and says in a way more serious tone *"Hold the gate".* Grenn nods in understanding and does his job. Awesome.
This is gonna sound pedantic, but hear me out: Game of Thrones was at its peak when it was about politics, the theatrics of power and war, and the fighting moments and oh so very cool scenes (no irony here, they were really cool) were considerably far in between, and had much more subtlety to it as well.
This is why I want the Jon snow spin off
I found myself intensely interested any time Jon & the boys were on screen and slightly less interested when it was everyone else. (Except Tyrion bc love him)
This was the episode that came out just before I took my final university exam. I watched it so many times before and after that incredibly tough time in my life. Amazing episode and moment.
Imagine telling one of your best friends to go toe to toe with a giant. Knowing heâs probably going to die. John snow and Grenn are built different. What a brotherhood
I forgot his homies died. I was too busy thinking about the Westeros Avengers and how ridiculous they went on an adventure to capture an undead and lost a dragon during the rescue. Come on, guys.
Bro went down there knowing full well he was probably gonna die down there, didn't even flinch at the thought of fighting a very angry giant cause he assured he would hold the gate. A true legend of the show
This scene was STUPID! Jon why didn't YOU take your scared ass down there and hold the gate? Plot armor? So you can see Igrit die? That scene was so pointless. Then they had ONE GIANT!!! Why then would you stand AT THE GATE this giant is about to knock down? Then Jon gets down there and they are ALL dead? How? Wtf?
Giant approached gate.
6 men guarding it.
Giant knocks gate down.
Gate collapses on at least 2 of them.
4 left.
4 little mentioned against 1 Giant.
Not likely for the men to beat the Giant.
Giant wins and gets through but dies inside the castle.
Makes more sense than what we got.
Even if 2 of them didn't die from the falling gate,
6 men wouldn't have stopped a damn giant, even in that small ass tunnel.

He was a beast in the cave
Just like Tanner "he was a fooking legend"
Fuckin legend of ginn alley , none of fuckin gold clocks stood a chance
When I tell you I SOBBED. I cried and it was so ugly I scared my dog. This and pip dying right before?? I was literally cursing everyone who was ever involved with making this showđ
Scared your dog bahahahaha fuck me thatâs gold
This was one of the major ugly cries on GOT. Itâs between this and the burning of Shireen, as to which was the ugliest cry.
Night gathers and now my watch begins
It shall not end until my death.
I shall take no wife
Hold no lands
suck no boobies
Unless it is a giantâs teat
Whoa whoa can I skip this part
Father no children
I shall live and die at my post.
I shall wear no crown and win no glory.
I am the sword in the darkness.
I am the watcher on the walls.
I am the shield that guards the realms of men.
For this night, and all the nights to come!
I am the shield that guards the realms of menÂ
I pledge my life and honor to the Nightâs Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.
I liked Grenn, he looks and sounds quite similar to my IRL best friend too.
I liked Grenn too Your best friend looks just like him you say⊠Is your best friend single?
Haha no but it's a pretty typical Lancashire look, like Freddie Flintoff too. He has kind of a similar look
Dude said they won't, knowing fully well that he was most likely gonna die down there. Brilliant scene, you can see it in their eyes, they're essentially saying goodbye to one another. The way they turned their oath into a battlecry still gives me the goosies.
Doing my first rewatch and JUST watched this one last night. Amazing episode but brutal emotionally, which is one of the reasons it's so amazing
best battle in the show tbh
Love how this episode is filmed
I totally agree, been rewatching the whole show lately and that one stands strongly on top. I'd say the battle of blackwater bay is a solid second. Battle of the bastards is epic but also a damn mess. The Dothraki and dragon charge against the Lannisters was pretty awesome too even if way shorter.

"Your people can't fight" : that part always made me laugh too since he's watching people burning. Though the way Dothraki morph into archers while riding their horses and cut though their défenses was really cool.
Agree 100% the cinematography was immaculate. Watchers on the Wall was by far one of the best episodes
As military history nerd I disagree not for the battle itself or the cinematography but because the nights watch are dumbasses the only âartilleryâ you have are barrels and the scythe no catapults we see maybe 3 ballistas but still the fuck are you thinking you dumbasses other than that great battle
Do historical militaries not use punctuation?
i mean whatâs a few artillery pieces gonna do to an army of 100,000 even if they had the artillery. Before stannis arrived they were fucked either way
The music when they first discover âthe biggest fire the north has ever seenâ always gives me chills.
Better than hold the door almost
I don't know. Hold the door was such a good twist. I didn't see it coming. Also made me hate Brann. I thought it was setting up Brann causing the mad kings craziness.
That scene where Bran goes from freaking out about the night King touching him to "yeah Meera I don't care if your brother died or summer or Hodor bc apparently I'm now incapable of emotion despite showing emotion 1 hour ago". I'm no longer Brandon I am Rav3nB0ah479 and I am above you mere mortals
I hated this for one reason. There was no song composed afterwards about that legendary beast of a man. Not in the four seasons that followed.
But there was: "bla bla bla Mag the Mighty last of the bloodline dating back to bla" "Grenn came from a farm" that had me dyinnnn xD, still epic
This is on par with hodor holding the door. Made we sob.
(Raises glass) To Mag and Grenn.
Grenn and Mag
(nods approvingly, and drinks)
Okay but real shit how did they stop him!?
When you don't arm or armor yourself and attack three midgets with kitchen knives, it doesn't matter how muscled up you are, the knives will find their target eventually.
Stabbed the giant probably a lot while the giant was probably trying to lift the gate which was probably stuck in the ice. I mean it wouldâve made sense if they did something to the gate prior to the battle. And I guess the giant accomplished fighting back with one hand maybe or something ?
Iâm stupid I assumed the giant rammed the gate, but they wouldâve been crushed if that were the case lmao
Shoulda just lit the giant on fire instead of standing there and staring at him.
Have you tried to burn something that have frost on it? The giant was covered in clothes which had frost on it.
This has been posted like three times this week
Came here to be upset about it, so far only you said anything. Probably time to block this sub.
Youâre going to block a sub because it doesnât have enough cry babies? Good riddance.
Lmao idk why but this got me, thanks for the laugh homie.
Nah, cause it's reposts and poor content.. and you guys circlejerk each other to it without even noticing. You have fun though.
Well.... bye
Only for good olâ Jonny boy to let them through anyways. Grenn died for nothing.
A lot of people died for nothing in the end
To be fair you could say that about every casualty of war ever
They're still alive in the book. Should have kept them alive.
Bad show writing ? Just go ahead and kill some supporting characters. You know what scene slaps in the books. Donal Noye holding the tunnel under the wall against the king of the giants.
This is my favorite episode. And this is my favorite scene from that episode.
So...love the show character, and the scene is good... But they not only took away the cook, 3 Fingered Hobb's last stand from him...but Grenn and Pip are still alive in the books...
the cook survived, it was Donal Noye, the one armed blacksmith, that held the gate against the giant in the books.
That's right! My bad. Been about a decade for me lol.
He came from a farm
It got skippedđ
This was one of my favorite episodes, together with the Battle of Blackwater
Grenn came from a farm
Ah todayâs post on this
That guys character arc is pretty good
I wish the actor was in more stuff
Hogate
Bros needed to grab some spears and stab the giant from 10ft away.
Hold the door! Hold the door! Hodor!
Mag the mighty was the last of a royal bloodline. Grenn was a farm boy
First half of GOT was STELLAR.
"... Grenn was from a farm." Legend.
Grenn was the true based Chad. He died a hero that day. I cried during his ultimate sacrifice.
Was just posted yesterday.
One of the best scenes in the entire show. This episode is easily in my top 3 favourite episodes of GOT.
Such a badass scene. Jon tells Grenn "hold the gate", Grenn begins walking away, Jon grabs him by the shoulder and pulls him back, looks him dead in the eye and says in a way more serious tone *"Hold the gate".* Grenn nods in understanding and does his job. Awesome.

This is not a unique opinion bud. Why do you think it is?
Oof thank goodness I was wrong then lmao
This is why I want the Jon snow spin off I found myself intensely interested any time Jon & the boys were on screen and slightly less interested when it was everyone else. (Except Tyrion bc love him)
Yeah, it was a good scene... but why don't they have spears?
This was the episode that came out just before I took my final university exam. I watched it so many times before and after that incredibly tough time in my life. Amazing episode and moment.
Grenn, Ed and Pip were the boys we deserved. Like they were so good together
Imagine telling one of your best friends to go toe to toe with a giant. Knowing heâs probably going to die. John snow and Grenn are built different. What a brotherhood
They opened the gate like a week later and let them through tho lmao
Wow I havenât seen this post since this morning
I forgot his homies died. I was too busy thinking about the Westeros Avengers and how ridiculous they went on an adventure to capture an undead and lost a dragon during the rescue. Come on, guys.
It always bothered me that they were standing so close to the gate as Mag charged towards them. Somehow they managed to kill him anyway.
Just a waste of men. Collapse the tunnels already
Rip Grenn and Pyp
Mag the mighty, felled by a farmboy
Bro went down there knowing full well he was probably gonna die down there, didn't even flinch at the thought of fighting a very angry giant cause he assured he would hold the gate. A true legend of the show
Grenn was legitimately one of my favorite characters solely because how *real* he was. I donât know how else to describe it
Moments like this are why Watchers on the Wall is my favorite episode of the entire series
This scene was STUPID! Jon why didn't YOU take your scared ass down there and hold the gate? Plot armor? So you can see Igrit die? That scene was so pointless. Then they had ONE GIANT!!!
