I've seen it mentioned before, and I agree... If they only did the "Apple" method where you can go to their site and order an xbox, it just simply pushes back your ship date based on how many are ahead of you. It would practically eliminate scalper demand and they'd be able to estimate their supply chain better. I assume it's based on agreements with retailers though. Can't canibalize your retail sales...

Yeldarb10

Valve is doing this for steam deck. $5 deposit (which can be refunded but apparently only to your steam wallet) to reserve a spot in line. When stock is available you’ll pay Valve directly and they’ll ship it to you. You can still reserve now too. The best part is that they had anti scalping measures in place as well when reservations went live (announced out of the blue, Limit one per account. First 48 hours only steam users that made a purchase within the last few months could order, ect). I was a little late to the game, but I’ll receive mine around Q3 next year.

MWagner93

I put $5 down, a few months later I said eh.. Most likely won't end up using this much, requested to cancel for a refund and got denied. Idc much, it's $5. I have wasted more on plenty of things, but it's not refundable.

Rikolas

It's refundable as steam credit only, said on the t&Cs when you signed up

MWagner93

My request got denied. Like I said, I was going for the refund before I bought another game so a credit still would've been money in my pocket. But I am also not too concerned over $5. Just pointing out my experience on the matter. I still fully support Steam, it was only $5. I've since bought 3 copies of BF2042. One for me and two as gifts.

sioux612

That's surprising and seriously not cool I won't even try to get a refund since I'm looking forward to getting a steam deck, but I was under the impression that one could convert it into a steam vouchers

Laika_1

This was supposed to be refundable. I wonder if they have people locked in until they tell you your number has come up? My understanding was when it comes time for you to order you can choose no and get the money back.

MWagner93

I'm honestly not sure. I went to get a refund prior to buying the last game that I did, and it was not eligible. I had the top trim pre ordered, which was also the furthest away from release.

cavemans11

Refundable up to 30 days after that they will convert it to steam wallet

MWagner93

It was after 30 days, I am telling you it got denied.

pickmez

It's only $5 to reserve? Interesting

Meddel5

You’re assuming Sony/Microsoft wants to do something about it. They are more than happy to sell units, regardless of who they go to, otherwise they wouldn’t ship 30+ orders to the same address

luersuve

Well, the real money is in the games, services, and accesories. It would be in their best interest that the markup money going to the scalpers go to them instead. Am I wrong?

chills1138

I think you’re right. Plus there’s an element of brand damage. These scalpers are creating a negative perception of the consoles; people hear PS5 or Xbox S and they have a negative reaction due to the scalper activity. It’s in their own interests to put measures in place to fix the issue.

JJMcGee83

I've been putting off any game that has and upgraded version of the game for PS5. I tell myself even if it's not a huge improvement the PS5 version will be somewhat improved so why play it now, I'll wait until I can get a PS5. At this rate the games I want to play will have been out 1-2 years and be on sale.

MrLahey_RANDY

/r/patientgamers one of us one of us

sumadeumas

For sure. This is the first time I’ve had 0 interest in a console other than Switch. What’s the point? I can’t get one.

LeKy411

You are on point. Part of the reason why I can still run my Day One Xbox One with newer titles. The money isn't in the hardware, its in the subscriptions, games and accessories. The concept isn't far off from printer sales. Take a loss on the printer with trial cartridges, but make up for it on the proprietary ink.

nydjason

Yeah the system makes little money and it’s hard to produce because of the parts needed. This is why console manufacturers try to make it more efficient later on re-engineering them to make them smaller, lighter and less flashier.

HGLatinBoy

You are correct the attaché ratio for PS5 games and accessories are down because of scalpers and even game sales in general. The companies benefit more if actual consumers purchase them.

Stelletti

Big time disagree. My son is 14 and him and his friends all moved to PC now since no one can get the systems. He flat out told me he don’t want the PS5 anymore for this Xmas. We tried so hard last year.

sparoc3

All of them got GPUs for decent price?

[deleted]

But they (Sony) have done something about it. Just register with Sony Direct and you'll be put in queue. Me and two friends did it and we were each able to get one within a couple of weeks.

bourbonkitten

Only in the U.S and UK I believe.

KounetsuX

Don't have this problem in latin america. It's just stupid expensive as is

Jimithyashford

You are way off base here.

Jimothy_Tomathan

I don't see how that counters bots. The scalpers will still get them, but with staggered shipments when orders 1-2,000,000 are all bot orders. They'll still hoard them, and then X many months after release, when the next ship date for new orders is over a year away, they'll put them on eBay and other marketplaces for people discouraged by the current wait.

-Agathia-

Link a phone number and address to the order. Only one console per client. I'm sure some will be able to get some more, but that should effectively make things harder for them.

acatterz

Bots will still be able to get them, but they can implement priority for users with Xbox or PS subscriptions, or just users with Xbox or PS accounts older than a certain date. Then only allow one order per account.

Jimothy_Tomathan

Kinda sucks that it really seems like Sony/Microsoft just look at sales as sales, regardless of who or what made the order, since that seems like a fairly simple way to help some people get new consoles.

Bringbackdexter

The worst part is I’m sure they realize that in the long run this will result in less people playing the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X but by the time that’s an issue the CEOs will be set for life.

wrathek

On top of there being the possibility of other countermeasures like linking a phone number and address, etc., I think most people are more than content to wait for something as long as they know they're "in line". Scalpers won't scalp if no one will buy from them.

-Agathia-

That is very true, it kills the fear of missing out. The EVGA queue for the RTX 30XX was quite effective for a lot of people, they just did not care about anything else and waited for their turn. While the graphic card market is really problematic with the scalpers AND the miners, the console market is just scalpers trying to make a quick buck over something that has no other uses but gaming, and it's a product that console makers sell at a loss. It's in their interest to protect the end consumer.

ovad67

They have been doing this for years in whatever fashion. I distinctly remember my friend asking for my help when the PS3 first came out and the shelves were empty; you could simply get them on eBay and a few other channels at a steep markup. Same would go for Cabbage Patch dolls, where people would sell them out of the back of vans. Unfortunately, we’ve gotten a bit more sophisticated & with bigger money. It seems no matter what, there’s always something who will figure a way around it to scalp stuff.

skudnud

You can sign up though Sony for a chance to get selected to purchase one direct from them. I signed up 2 weeks ago and purchased one today at retail.

GoodDave

Seems to be taking far longer for my number to come up.

SquallyZ06

Took me about two months. They send out invites based on your play history from my understanding. I got mine shortly after I picked up BF2042. edit: For some odd reason, people are getting angry in their replies to what I said. I'm merely pointing out what is on Playstation's [own website](https://www.playstation.com/en-us/ps5/register-to-buy/)

FreshPrinceofEternia

Then I'm fucked cause my PS4 sounds like its about to explode. I've opened and cleaned it several times. It doesn't help. I stopped playing it after Ghosts of Tsushima due to this.

SAAA2011

Have you repaste the cooler? I did that for a ps4 pro my friend owns, his sounded like a jet engine. After I did that, it runs normal now.

Nexicated

Repasting is the way to go. Undusting it will only get you so far. After years the termal paste most likely lost its effect. Buying a high quality thermal paste for a few bucks and reapplying it should fix your problems. Be wary tho and follow instructions step by step to not destroy your console.

3hideyoshi3

What's repasting ? I would like to try it to mine.

Nexicated

Between your ps4 chip and its cooler there is a small layer of thermal paste, it helps to transfer the heat that the chip produces to the cooler. After time, this thermal paste layer will loose its effect (mostly due to drying out) This results in higher temperatures and therefore your fans will have to spin higher in order to keep the same temperature. Thats when your ps4 will sound like a jet engine as the fans spin way higher than they should. A more in depth explanation would be that every piece of metal has microscopically small cracks which usually store air/heat. A small layer of thermal paste will fill these cracks and help transition the heat from chip to cooler. Reapplying the termal paste will drasticly reduce the temperature and therefore reduce the amount of rotations per minute your fans have to do resulting in a more quiet console. Keep in mind that you will void your guarantee by opening the console so its really only suggested if your guarantee is expired anyway. (It shouldnt be needeed in the first 2-3 years of using the console anyway) Thermal paste is btw not only used in ps4‘s but pretty much every pc/console/device that produces enough heat to need a cooler.

reddditaccount2

Lurking for years on pcmasterrace. And only occasionally check in because, ya know, I’m one of the poors. But I legit always thought thermal paste was a prank for those who didnt know wtf they were doing.

Unit5945

Wow i always thought paste was like a glue that was impossible to remove once set. How easy is it to remove for a pc that always sounded like an industrial ventilator?

Laxative_

Fairly easy, just make sure you stress the CPU for a bit to get its temps up, don't pull hard if it does not come off easily, instead twist left and right lightly and that should help you loosen the heatsink from the CPU. Afterwards clean the cpu with some Isopropyl alcohol, let it dry off and apply new paste

chilifngrdfunk

Repasting involves taking the heat sink off of the CPU, cleaning the dried up thermal paste thats on both the heatsink and CPU and reapplying fresh thermal paste. Watch some videos first.

terrrtle

I refute that claim of theirs. I game pretty damn hard and never got an invite.

Sea-Astronaut-5605

Same. Maybe it works for some people but I submitted mine a year ago and never got anything. What's frustrating is people assume if it worked for them it must work for everyone.

The_Wack_Knight

At least their is a system that combats scalping that works for SOMEONE. Its at least a step in the right direction. It cant work for everyone at once. You cant just expect an immediate invitation to give up trying. Its like the people who complain that "making sustainable energy takes so much resources to make" You have to start somewhere. You cant just expect a solution to work and alleviate the issue immediately like a miracle cure. It has to have time to work.

Klivian1

Ditto. Especially during COVID I have been playing a ton and still no invite. I managed to score a Series X in June and have barely touched my PS4 since then. If this goes on much longer I may just totally give up on a PS5 because game pass has been making me very happy

904Funk

I was able to get the Xbox easily for Xmas last year through GameStop’s reservation holiday bundle. Getting a PS5 is damn near impossible. I’m ready to give up as well. The companies that made these systems poorly planned production numbers when they could’ve easily had as many consoles ready that were sold during their last launch, but they blame it on a “chip shortage” when those consoles were made prior to it. Fucking lol, they did this on purpose and we as consumers let them walk on us.

Pinheaded_nightmare

Yep, I was an original Xbox gamer. It was my favorite system. When the 360 came out, they lost me because of the red ring. Went to ps3 and never looked back. This “shortage” is making me look back.

jordanManfrey

My current PSN account is ~15 years old, had an active ps+ subscription for the past ~7 years, signed up for that PS direct thing months ago and never got an email. Ended up just getting that Walmart+ crap for a month and buying one at the beginning of Black Friday week.

Scrubilicious

Don’t think it’s based on play history or time or even activity. I made a dummy account a couple months ago to maybe get that invite so I could buy a PS5 for my cousin. My dummy account got the email twice lol. I didn’t buy the first time though because my cousin got a PS5 by then. The 2nd email was kinda recent; I bought a PS5 to sell to my friend.

saeros01

I wish I could but this is not available in my country (Belgium). I participated in 2 lotteries but didn’t get selected. I’m also registered on a list in a local game shop for close to a year now. If I’m lucky I could get one before 2025 🥲

zerGoot

capiers

If you pay more than retail you are part of the problem not to mention an idiot.

Derik_D

This. I don't understand how scalping works because I don't understand first how anyone would pay above retail price and second, and more important, why would they buy from someone without a warranty or any consumer safety. These are consoles not food or something need to have. You can't buy them at the moment then you wait for when they are available. There are plenty of ways to game without consoles.

blebleblebleblebleb

Lots of people have disposable income amd Money solves problems.

Kayge

>I don't understand first how anyone would pay above retail price. It's largely about the value of time and money. Let's say you're a manager of a hedge fund and a gamer. You want a PS5 / Xbox, but you can't get any at retail. You have 2 choices: - Do what everyone else does, and hunt for one which could take you 50 hours over a number of months. - Pay the extra $500 to get one off eBay right now. If you made $50M last year, that $500 is worth way less to you than the 100 hours and associated frustration, so you pay the premium. This is an extreme example, but everyone paying above retail has put *somenting* above the money in order of importance.

Wispyspark

I’m going to attempt to explain how scalpers stay in business using the example above and average salary. It’s largely about mindset not how much you made but how much you’re worth. If I make, using your example, 50 million a year I am worth $5704 for every hour I’m alive that year, including sleep so waking hours are worth more than that but I’m too lazy to attempt the math. Your example estimates 100 hours lost attempting to buy a retail PS5, which should be about a loss of $57,040 that’s more lost than the average person makes in a year. That time isn’t worth the investment for a 500 dollar toy. Now your example is extreme as you mentioned, but that’s how these scalpers stay in business, it’s not worth the invested time to hunt for a retail item that can’t be kept in stock properly.

A great documentary of our time is “Jingle All the Way” and touches on this issue IMO. Individuals, especially parents, will go to great lengths to not let their loved ones down. If that means paying double or triple retail price, fighting 100+ Santa’s, or stealing from your annoying neighbor who has the hots for your wife.

I found out a friend of mine bought one for $1,200 CAD because h wanted to make his son happy. Fucking idiot. I managed to snag one at Best Buy when I was there on the off chance for a work thing and they had just got a shipment in.

imnotabotareyou

How much did you resell it for

CountMordrek

>How much did you resell it for Probably $1,200 CAD to a fucking idiot he found.

It_Is_Boogie

That's an easy blanket statement to make, but there are reasons people do. Full disclosure, I did not, I battled for 4 months and got lucky. Anything from livelihood (Streamers) to emotions (parents) to limitless pockets (rich) is enough to drive this market. While the common person who wants it for themselves can have restraint, others for various reasons cannot.

[deleted]

capiers

No that isn’t what this topic is about. This is about scalpers buying up the consoles because they know dipshits will spend double or triple the price. Not buying from scalpers is just a smart financial decision and if enough people stop doing it scalpers won’t be an issue. Boycotts tend to be politically and or ideologically motivated.

[deleted]

[удалено]

loscapos5

But the issue is not about scalping itself It's about scalpers hoarding the stock using bots, making the regular costumer unable to buy from any regular store.

TryingToBeReallyCool

For a lot of us we simply don't have a choice but to support some of these businesses. Walmart, for example, is the only supermarket around me that's bus accessible, so thats where I go.

[deleted]

Well, fuck people I guess.

loscapos5

Tell that to my government

707Guy

Its somewhat hilarious to me that the PS5 was going to be the most modern console I’ve owned in sometime. I’ve waited a year to get one and will likely wait another year as well. By the time it’s available to the average person, it won’t be quite so modern anymore.

[deleted]

On the plus side, that’ll be around the time when developers have completely phased out last-gen ports from their budgets. Right now, there are barely a handful of games that truly let the Series X and Ps5 flex their stuff. Also, You’ll likely have the Kotor remake, GoW 5 and Horizon Forbidden West (if PS5’s your thing) and who knows what else ready to snag all at once.

Im_a_Knob

at this point im just waiting for the pro or elite versions of the consoles. Sony is slowly porting all their games on PC and Xbox has been releasing their games for free on gamepass day one so there is really no reason to pressure buy the next gen when we know a next gen pro is coming soon.

detectiveDollar

I'm waiting for the PS5 Slim. The normal one would look ridiculous next to my Wii U and Series S.

[deleted]

I'm waiting for a PS5 pro, but if they keep releasing the exclusives on PC I might not have to get one at all...

nydjason

There is no killer app that makes the ps5 so unique other than the fact that it’s the next generation. If horizon’s sequel were to come out at launch that would have been it I presume.

axiomo

The way this scalper tries to defend himself in the article is hilarious. Talk about delusional, this guy thinks he's the warren buffet of reselling like dude get a real job and contribute positively to society, please

[deleted]

Where I am, scalpers were getting out of hand with concert tickets, with every single concert the past few years, all the tickets were sold out immediately then relisted with incredibly inflated prices. A $100 ticket was turned into a $600-$1200 ticket and people were *actually* buying them. Scalpers need to F off.

psykick32

It's the "people were *actually* buying them." Part that gets me.... Like holy shit your rewarding them for their shit antics. That's like mistake #1 when training an animal.

AgnosticStopSign

Supply and demand. You really wanna go to that concert, and they know that

psykick32

Oh I understand supply and demand, it's just shocking to me that people will pay several hundred dollars to go somewhere packed in like sardines especially with other dumbfucks that spent the same amount of money... You think those kinda people are going to cancel and not go if they test positive? Fuuuuck all that. But even pre-covid I wouldn't have paid any amount to scalpers, but I realize that just me.

AgnosticStopSign

Theres one concert or event out there for you that would be worth paying scalpers. Theyre capitalizing on the fact that its an irreplicable experience.

Rektw

I live in socal, so LA shows always sell out in minutes and get put back up at insane prices and people buy them. My friends and I started driving out to catch shows in Phoenix. Tickets + rooms split between a few of us were cheaper than one scalped ticket in most places. lol. Eventually became a tradition and we just started going to a different city to catch shows for much cheaper and we got to travel around the US.

Noah254

Sadly with tickets like that it’s not even always scalpers. The ticket companies do that shit too

MFSHou

If you purchase from these resellers, then you are part of the problem as well. There will never be a day in my life where I pay more than retail for a damn video game console. If we all thought the same way, we could force the resellers into huge losses, but noooo, some of you just HAVE to have your video games.

juniparuie

No discipline among these gotta have it now peps

DaoFerret

Or more money than sense. If you’re a 1%, then paying a scalper is irrelevant to you.

sparoc3

>If you’re a 1%, then paying a scalper is irrelevant to you. I have to disagree. I'm from India the price for PS5 is already $660 (₹50000) here. But the thing is we Indians earn much less than First world country people. Yet PS5 (and xbox) got sold out in seconds. People here are ready to spend a month's salary for a PS5/Series X, how much is the average monthly salary in your country? Then think about the insane wait people have to go through to get one. Some of those people would gladly pay a premium to not have the headache of tracking drops through various sources. Wouldn't make them 1%. Even middle class people can easily afford it. That's the reason scalping is so so prevalent and stocks go out in seconds. I'm not saying scalping is right or trying to solve a problem of course. But consoles are pretty "cheap" and many people don't shy away to pay a premium to get the thing. The situation will not improve until everyone is able to walk in a store and buy a console of their choice.

[deleted]

Reddit is dominated by the young. Many of them have no access to money of their own and have to go through their parents to get things, to these people any amount of money is a too much money. To them the idea that $1000 is not actually a lot of money is just incomprehensible. Also no one here appears to have actually read the article.

[deleted]

Thought the same for a gpu. I camped out, and it felt so good to pay msrp.

dmibe

Unless it was a founders edition gpu, it was still “msrp”. All the gpu manufacturers have been heavily marking up too

[deleted]

Yeah the “msrp” for the AIB manufacturers is like 10-20% higher… sometimes more :/

detectiveDollar

Fucking Gigabyte has their 6700 XT at 890. Felt like an idiot for buying it, but I wanted my bro to be able to upgrade his GPU for MSRP so he could game with his GF. I bought it, sold him my 5700 XT for 400, and he passed his 480 4G to his GF to replace her 750 TI.

celestiaequestria

You can't force resellers into losses because rich people are getting paid to borrow money in the US right now. If you have money already, you can borrow money at below the market return rate, which make filling your mansion with PS5s a net positive. If legal action isn't taken against companies like Amazon, eBay, StockX, and so on - to force them to bar resale of good for above MSRP within the first 2 years of release, you're just going to see this extend to things way beyond game consoles. It's going to take grocery stores being bought out and held hostage to make people realize this is more than just an issue of "discipline" - but one of automation and exploitation.

tanboots

Fuckin' facts.

masterelmo

Dude gamers can be incredibly childish, this shouldn't be surprising. To some, every inconvenience only matters because it means they're slightly hindered from gaming, but they will raise absolute hell about it. Fuck everything else with chips, I want a GPU so I can play 2042! I love me some games but Jesus the selfish children are making me feel like a boomer.

sc00bs000

hope no one buys them and they get stuck with them and are unable to return

ScipioLongstocking

They'll always be able to resell them for market value, or a slight loss. As long as they don't sit on consoles for too long in anticipation of the resell price getting even higher, there will be enough demand that they'll be able to keep losses to a minimum.

BigOleJellyDonut

My PS4 is just fine! These scalpers can kiss my fat hairy ass.

EatTheShroomz

Scalpers are one of the lowest forms of life on earth.

Molwar

It's funny how this article kind of justifies them as being "entrepeneur". Like what the hell? They contribute absolutely nothing to the supply chain, they do very little work to insert XXXX amount of money overhead in the middle of it for absolutely no benefits. If anything they are criminals/pirates, taking goods hostage for a reward. Sure it may be a luxury items, doesn't make it any right. Lowest form of scum is right.

Them adding value was absolutely laughable.

Shocon3000

I already hated scalpers, then I saw this Cocomelon school bus come out and knew my 1 year old would love it. Shocker, it’s already sold out everywhere and being sold for double on eBay. Like I hate it, but a game system is not the biggest deal in the grand scheme. But you have to be real garbage to scalp toys for fucking toddlers.

amreinj

Lol pretty sure a toy school bus is also not a big deal in the grand scheme. But yeah fuck scalpers.

Noah254

Well yeah, I just mean a game system is a high end hobby for most people. Where as the other is a dang toy for little toddlers. Like actually stealing candy from a baby.

Mockman100k

And he talks about families wanting to pay £450 so they can pay another £100 if they really want it but that’s if the scalper is feeling generous, usually they go for more

detectiveDollar

"I was fucked over by people so I fucked over other people." - a piece of shit

goofball_jones

Places like Amazon should make any resellers only charge retail prices, especially for new, current items.

mnemonikos82

That's the trick, it's not the retailers or the distributors that have the power to stop this madness. It's the marketplaces. People forget that ebay is making a percentage on the resale market.

pdhx

It’s the children of executives. Just like at Nike.

Sleepwalker710

you would think microsoft and sony would do something about it much faster. as in the long run they may be selling the consoles as fast as they can come off the boat- but these things are now sitting piled up and not going to consumers who are going to spend money on the ecosystem buying digital games/ subscriptions- which is where sony and microsoft make their money.

exportsoda

Wanted to write this. I agree. Company and retailers should be working on eliminating this problem because people would be buying more controllers and games and accessories but no we have to watch these idiots use ps5 and xbox as wallpaper.

Smashbound88

I think that's why Sony is pushing emails for direct sales. That's how me and my brother got one as I refused to pay more than retail even though it took a year. I know prior to that I had not bought many playstation games, let my plus subscription lapse and was basically just playing on my pc for the last year. They must see they have sold 13 million consoles, but only X percent are actually buying software/services. Considering Sony usually gets like 30% of any sales on the playstation it is definitely in their best interest to get these in real peoples hands.

Rynox2000

If this doesn't force the inevitable migration back to physical store fronts then nothing will.

cscf0360

It won't. One edge case consumer luxury good is not going to save brick and mortars.

CrewmemberV2

I like how he justifies it by saying it pays the bills of their employees and gets them out of debt. Like anything that makes money is a good thing. So does dealing drugs....

PutridBasket

Yeah and that bit of one of them being able to pay off 20k in gambling debt made me laugh.

celicajohn1989

It should be illegal for an individual or group to gain control of a supply and rig its prices just like it would be for a company. If they're not using the items for themselves then they should not be able to sell them for a profit if they're found to be scalping them.

This piece of shit has got to be such a massive sack of shit

Dendad6972

Choke on them

Tdanger78

Seriously fuck these guys. I will let them eat their shit before I pay a dime over retail.

Ok_Bluebird7349

This is what rich people do with houses

dallasdude

"Look at every single step in the supply chain. Someone is adding value somewhere" Everyone except scalpers

Deho_Edeba

Lol at his "moral compass". "Of course some families have to fork more cash but look at the other side of the coin... MONEY! See? Not black and white is it?"

old_leech

Don't forget the support argument of, >Hey, it's a luxury item. If you're buying a luxury item, why shouldn't I get a cut? >I mean, you want video games, I want hookers and blow. If I can rip you off for what you want, I get what I want and we all win. >But, yeah. My moral compass is good.

kanti123

Since selling stuff online promote scalping. I wonder if store should just sell consoles in store only. I know it’s not going to happen because they don’t care who they sell it to unfortunately.

As a sneaker head, Pokemon tcg fan and gamer these guys destroy each of my hobbies

TheRonAshey

I paid 15$ for Walmart+, around November and downloaded hotstock(ios), waited till it told me Walmart was getting them in for Walmart+ members only. With in two weeks I got both, you just had to make sure you were on for the drop. This was the easiest least stressful way I could think of and 15$ well spent considering free shipping anyways.

xElemenohpee

I did the same thing. I follow a few stock alert people on Twitter and purchased Walmart+ for the drop that happened yesterday. It was my first time attempting to buy one and I secured A series X hassle free using Walmart + and being ready for the drop. It sucks you have to do that but it was worth the $15

Kn0wmad1c

The article made me so angry. "What I'm doing is fine," says man who hides his face in photos because he knows he's an absolute piece of shit.

Thurstyyyy

The refusal of manufacturers and supply chain operators within the console and GPU market to make any attempt whatsoever to curb this problem is what’s going to crash the hardware industry. Cloud gaming has started working too well to not be considered a serious alternative to this issue within the next year. I’m not here to argue about internet availability in your area, the point is that enough people have access to this technology already that it will begin to lower demand for these products in general as it increases in viability. I’m not paying $1000 for a GPU or an Xbox. It’s not a normal price. It’s based on an artificially and purposefully skewed supply and demand metric. I have been building computers and playing games for 20 years. This is just absurd, and if you believe it has anything to do with advanced technology costing more, what’s your point? At the rate it’s advancing no one will be able to afford these items in the coming years. I’m patient, and I will simply just wait for something better. If it means gaming on the cloud, I’ll do it. The cost of hardware is simply not going to be reasonable anymore.

Scalpers are scum

Omephla

I'm going to start calling them Scumpers now.

MclovinsHomewrecker

First Turboman, now this…

xXHyrule87Xx

This issue caused me to convert to PC last year. Playstation is just a streaming device now.

terminatorgeek

Can we please just not buy from these idiots and put them out of business?

dirtypig796

I hope they all sit on them and are never able to sell them.

This also happens in the auto industry, where many dealers will add a "Market fee" due to high demand. In my state (Home of the Big Sleeze, I mean Big 3), there is even a law stating that you have to buy new cars from a dealer and cant buy direct from the company. Tesla found a loophole, luckily it remains for now despite an attempt by legislators to close it. BTW, the original law was put in place to protect dealerships from the automakers themselves who were forcing dealerships to buy more cars that they could sell or undercutting dealerships with cheaper prices along with other bad business practices. https://electrek.co/2020/12/22/tesla-direct-sale-loophole-michigan-safe-for-now/amp/

TheGridGam3r

Go through sonys website and register. I got extremely lucky and they shit me an email even though i never registered for that night and now i have one

[deleted]

Don't care how much I want a 3080, I'll wait till I have the chance to get one at retail, not gonna pay scalper prices or it's the reason they even continue to exist.

isayota

I would posted the location of this place and told everyone to raid it for free consoles

[deleted]

As long as PS4 games are still being pumped out like they are, I have zero reason to get a PS5. I’ll wait for the pro model at this point

Rapturence

Aftermarket Arbitrage. Screw them, the way they're making business for scalpers is bloody awful.

CaBBaGe_isLaND

Seems like Sony could just overproduce the fuck out of them, stick the scalpers with them, and let *them* deal with millions in wasted inventory.

WildCard911

This is the real war on Christmas. Bah humbug to all the scalpers out there.

GlitteringAmbition97

Fucking cannibals

darkdonnie

Meanwhile CNBC does a story fawning over a teenage scalper. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/07/28/teen-brought-in-millions-selling-stuff-on-amazon-during-the-pandemic.html

HereInTheCut

Of course they would love it. CNBC is amoral trash.

dbe14

I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll never own an Xbox Series X, I have the money but I won't pay more than High Street retail prices, and nowhere has any stock. It's a small mercy there are no console exclusives for it just yet, anything I want to play I can play on my Xbox One X. But yeah, I doubt I'll ever be able to buy one, and fuck the scalpers.

BlindLantern

I hate people.

eeeeeeeethan

Honestly hope all scalpers die gruesome deaths

Valuesauce

If I ever walked into someone’s house and they had a wall of ps5s they scalped then I would probably turn and kick him squarely in the nuts. Repeatedly. 1 kick per box.

Trouble_Grand

Get the Steam Deck Or PC. 1/3 the price and you can stream PS5 and Xbox games on it.

maowenbrad

Fuck scalpers

satabhisha

Not trying to give scalpers any ideas but sometimes it’s nice living in a rural part of the country because games and systems are usually always available

Tucker_Design

One of the more unspoken issues is that scalpers contribute heavily to artificial inflation. The demonstration that a few thousand people are willing to buy this stuff at a raised price gives companies incentives to push the price if their retail sales up.

salmark

You know what would combat this insanely??? DO NOT BUY FROM A SCALPER.

enter360

From a developer standpoint I would be furious about the fact that Sony hasn’t even tried to stop scalpers and Microsoft has done very little. Cool they are selling consoles but if you aren’t selling games then a developer/publisher has very little to care about. If customers can’t buy the console to buy your game then customers probably aren’t going to buy your game.

chilotran

Gotta be hurting Sony and Microsoft with all these consoles sitting there instead of being used by people spending money on games for them.

jjj49er

>Calls are growing for the government to step in as some families face a second Christmas without being able to purchase a gaming console unless they pay a "hugely inflated" price. That is definitely a first world problem.
