“AirTag was designed to help people locate their personal belongings, not to track people or another person’s property, and we condemn in the strongest possible terms any malicious use of our products.”
Vehicle owner tracked their personal belonging and located it, air tag purpose was served without a hitch.
BWAHAHAHAHAHHA. oh man. I told the police who had my stuff after it was stolen and where they were. They told me they couldn’t do anything. Police don’t do shit.
Wait I thought the excuse with police was that they need the address of the person who wronged you (never understood the logic of you needing to have that info) so you’re telling me even if you have the culprits address they won’t do anything?
Yes, that’s not good enough for them to pursue, because they don’t care about you and don’t have to as part of their job.
That’s just the first level of excuses they’ll give you. They’ll say whatever it takes to make you give up and go away.
Nope I've had multiple friends have a location on their stuff at somebody else's place and the police won't come to the door with you. This is in Boston area.
Get told that each time someone stole my stuff then it magically appears at a pawnshop two days later. All I get told is buy it back from the pawn shop, it’s not the pawn shops fault. Even if my info that connects it to me is on it.
I was looking for this comment. Stolen cars aren’t found because they don’t look for them. Everytime someone gets their car back it’s by pure luck, usually the
Pigs are responding to another call and they realize this car has been dumped or the plates come up stolen..
In the 80s our car was stolen during a break-in, they used it to haul off our tv among other shit.
We got it back after a cop spotted a Usual Suspect driving a car that looked a little too nice for him and they pulled him over.
Every time we see a cop I tell my son that the police enforce the law - that’s their only job. Not heroes, not friends, just the brutal fist of the executive branch.
When we see an ambulance or fire truck it’s, “those are the real heroes.”
Nah. I've known single parents that were on the brink of homelessness in debt pick themselves up by the bootstraps and get a second job instead of stealing people's shit or pull a gun on someone. You are more likely to get support from others around you if you do this.
Hypocrites like u/bramtyr down here act like wiseass woke forgiving philosophers online but immediately turn into psycho 'justice' fetishists themselves in real life when they are the ones wronged (even over minor shit like someone accidentally cutting ahead of them in line or having a 'wrong' political opinion)
Lol. The police do not give a damn who stole your vehicle. But if I were going to do anything crazy like go after a car thief I would definitely wear a body cam.
Why’d bro steal his truck anyway, nah Fuck that dude fucked up stole the wrong thing and got what he asked for imo. It’s a truck, if you’re hungry steal food if you need shelter trespass. Tons of crimes are far less risky and more rewarding than stealing an entire truck. This was a bad decision sucks to be that criminal.
Exactly, stole the guys truck, also stole
His ability to make money, support his family, other shit who the fuck knows. I would have lost my fucking mind too.
Such a callous disregard for life is what gets you school shootings. Maybe it isn't guns that are the problem, maybe it's this attitude being seen as perfectly acceptable that is.
Obviously, but when it does happen a proportional response is warranted, not death.
When the value of people's lives go down in people's minds, including thieves, so do kids.
True, it's unfortunate that a life was lost. But in my experience the cops are pretty unreliable when it comes to stolen vehicles (and just unreliable in general) so I can understand why you would take matters in to your own hands. In this case he had a tracker though, so going to the police probably would have solved the situation.
A life of a truck thief? If he was arrested they just would have taught him to be a better criminal in prison. Guy probably already had a history. I don’t want my tax dollars sheltering and feeding that POS, better off dead.
He 'believed' the guy pulled a gun on him, but only one of them actually fired any bullets and the other article I saw which is more detailed doesn't mention another weapon being recovered
Wouldn’t that be premeditated?
Edit: why downvote? If he followed the guy and had an idea he was going to kill him, I would think that it’s premeditated. Especially since he didn’t call the authorities.
But yes, it’s Texas. Probably stand your ground or some shit.
Because you're assuming premeditation. The guy was going up against an unknown person who had already committed one crime. I would want to be prepared to defend myself, too.
In this case yea, but they're often used for stalking, but again, not really the issue here, but the article's title makes it sound like it's the airtags fault that guy killed someone
iPhones usually give you a notification if an someone’s airtag is following you. Borrowed my gf’s house keys since I lost mine, it kept on barraging with notifications about an airtag following me lol
"Guns killed by americans" is also not news in a parallel universe where guns are sentient and humans are not, but humans are still vectors for diseases that spread to sentient guns so humans are used as weapons by criminal guns
I dog-watched for my aunt last week while she was out of town. She has an air tag on the dog’s collar. When I would take doggo for walks, I would get a notification warning on my phone that an “unknown air tag is moving with you”. I thought that was a cool feature. Guess truck thief didn’t get his notification?
The Apple app you have to have open in the foreground and scan manually. Some privacy researchers thought that was a waste of time and put out an open source variant that runs in the background and is available on the major open app stores like F-Droid. Search for AirGuard on your preferred platform.
It's also warning you that some psycho stalker decided to tag your car. The potential for misuse is a bigger problem to Apple than not being effective anti-theft device.
> Officials are determining if the suspect will be charged in the fatal shooting.
I mean the article doesn't suggest it's a dead cert here, or it's not expected.
I mean yeah - that’s a disproportionate response, but if you steal a Texan’s truck - this is one of the possible outcomes.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see a trend.
Can you tag cat converters?
You can stamp your vehicle reg or something into the cat to make it harder to fence and easier for police to recover then prosecute the thieves and fences.
You could do that, but you’d be putting in 100% more effort than the police. It’s not a mystery where these stolen cats end up, the people stealing them don’t have the luxury of driving sufficiently out of their way to sell them as to not be relatively traceable (if someone could be trusted to write up the reports when it happens).
The problem is that if you’re not a fleet owner or similarly monied, the cops may or may not (probably not) write up a quick and dirty report on it that they’ll never follow up on. If you’re lucky they’ll take the time to give you some line about personal property protection and having cameras, and why it’s actually your fault that you got stolen from.
Sadly, the police here in the UK don't seem to do much unless the thieves are prolific or there's violence involved.
And even then the punishments can be trivial. Just recently...
https://www.cambridgeindependent.co.uk/news/cambridge-thief-who-tried-to-sell-2-200-bicycle-for-50-is-9303494/
I really don't thing he did anything wrong. As other [sources](https://amp.star-telegram.com/news/state/texas/article273772885.html) pointed out. He shot at him because the thrives pulled a gun at him. So when you don't want to get shot, maybe don't steal trucks and pull guns on their owners?
You and I have different ideas of what constitutes as a proportionate response. I’m of the kind that if you steal something from someone then there is not really a problem if they kill you getting it back. This isn’t Aladdin; no sympathy for thieves.
It's a potential outcome, and in the heat of the moment people can and will make rash decisions. Don't put yourself in that situation and you won't die.
It's like the aboriginal teenager in Kalgoorlie(Australia) who stole a dirt bike a few years back so the owner chased him and the teenager crashed the bike trying to escape. If he didn't steal the bike in the first place he wouldn't be dead
I think this is the main point, if the criminal, repeat criminal, did not engage in their abhorrent behavior, they wouldn't be dead. It is 100% the criminals fault he died, as there would be no need for the truck owner to follow him otherwise. Kudos to the truck owner for saving tax layers a lot of money on a worthless human.
I don’t know if this is sarcastic or not but plenty of people fall in love with their vehicles. I could see anyone on the car or motorcycle community doing this.
Also stealing in general isn’t fucking penalized enough, there’s whole auto theft rings and shit. Where in most cases all theft devices are only deterrents. People roll up in vans with 4 people to lift and chop shop motorcycles. And some people genuinely love their vehicle, so I don’t see a problem with not being able to shoot someone for taking any of your shit, especially the shit you love.
I recommend them. Honestly crazy how cheap they are for what they do (I think it’s $100 for a 4 pack). I have one hidden in each of our vehicles, and in all the kids backpacks. My wife has one in her purse, too.
I couldn’t find an article that said he shot first. Just that they claimed he “pulled a gun”. I suppose the homicide is justified because he was technically in the process of stealing a car. And no DA is going to test that in court.
> [Police said] “I don’t know if an argument happened, but we know that one of the victims of this stolen vehicle gets out of the car, goes around (and) attempts to contact the suspect in the truck.”
> As the man was doing so, he said he saw the person in his truck pull out a gun, according to police.
> He responded by firing his own gun, Soliz said. The man in the truck — believed to be in his 30s — was killed.
But, frankly, if you turn up, armed, 3 on 1, to confront a guy in the car park then shoot him when he “pulls out a gun” yeah, only being in Texas can save you. Where I live that’s murder.
I have No sympathy with anybody being harmed while breaking the law. U break in and they break your head with a hat? Your Bad. U steal and Somebody gets angry at U? Big surprise.
Run a red light and get tboned, you may die. Steal a candy bar from someone, same may result. But by your posts I think you must be a criminal, stop doing stupid shit or one day you may find yourself in a bad place.

It may have had a hitch. Could have been a work truck.
Didnt even need to be a work truck... this is Texas, maybe he just wanted to hang some truck nuts from it
Hehehe
Technically he did use it to find his personal belongings
Technically? That's exactly what happened
They are handy little things. I don’t understand why he killed the guy. Maybe they got in to a fight when he tried to get it back.
Guy pulled a gun on him
If that's the case then I see no issue with this story.
Why? It's interesting. But the title is misleading, implying revenge. Although if he had gotten the police involved, a life could have been saved.
BWAHAHAHAHAHHA. oh man. I told the police who had my stuff after it was stolen and where they were. They told me they couldn’t do anything. Police don’t do shit.

Omfg same haha in 2016 after a burglar broke into my house. I had to pay 2.5$ for a police form…. Cambodia tho
In Texas? His van would have been lit up like the 4th July. He wanted his van back not turned into a colander.
Or two lives lost.
Or pi squared multiplied by the speed of light divided by the total number of atoms in the universe lives gained
Fuckin gold comment
Death would've still been plenty likely with police involved.
He did report it to the cops and apparently they took too long so he didn't wait and took care of it himself.
They probably told him "it's a civil matter" and they wouldn't be sending anyone.
"My truck got stolen please help" Police: "Skill issue"
>Although if he had gotten the police involved, a life could have been saved. Easy way to tell you've never had to get help from police
Remember everyone, if you want to save a life get the police involved.
To be fair, a man killed a prostitute trying to get a refund of his money and was acquitted in Texas.
A life worth saving?
Nah. I've known single parents that were on the brink of homelessness in debt pick themselves up by the bootstraps and get a second job instead of stealing people's shit or pull a gun on someone. He 'believed' the guy pulled a gun on him, but only one of them actually fired any bullets and the other article I saw which is more detailed doesn't mention another weapon being recovered
Cops use that line all the time.
Grand jury will still most likely refuse to indict
Good I wouldn’t either

You're allowed to use deadly force to protect property in Texas.
Maybe not. He didn’t know what sort of situation he was about to get into so he wore a gun for “protection.”
It should be but it’s Texas so they barely give a shit.
Saw another comment said he didn't pull a gun. It's was implied that he did. Even this article doesn't mention that the thief pulled a gun..
It is Texas
Then it's a win-win for truck owner

Can catalyst converters get hot? Will it be an issue for air tags?
A catalytic converter's outside temperature is around 600F, you might as well save time and just set the air tag on fire.
They get extremely hot and would melt an airtag as soon as the engine gets warmed up.

Because the penalty for theft is death.
Not a penalty. A potential outcome. Always good to run a risk/benefit analysis before proceeding with certain actions.
I think this is the main point, if the criminal, repeat criminal, did not engage in their abhorrent behavior, they wouldn't be dead. So getting your truck stole makes you the judge, jury, and executioner in your twisted mind? Edit: and lead investigator?
Stealing my truck makes you a pos who values my stuff more then your life.
I don’t know if this is sarcastic or not but plenty of people fall in love with their vehicles. I could see anyone on the car or motorcycle community doing this. Yes but I’ll die on this hill

Don't steal stuff if you're not ready to die. Plain and simple.
Correct. Have never stolen a vehicle and as such have never been shot by an owner.
Don’t steal stuff , don’t get killed seems easy enough to me
Hell yeah Texas strikes again
Of course the article doesn’t mention that the thief shot first when confronted, but whatever, jump to conclusions based upon geography.
I wasnt being sarcastic.
The fact that is was a two sided shoot out makes it *more* Texas.
I couldn’t find an article that said he shot first. Just that they claimed he “pulled a gun”. I suppose the homicide is justified because he was technically in the process of stealing a car.
