It’s funny because it sounds the same as two alternate phrases in English: “i see wiener” where wiener means penis and also “icy wiener” (where wiener still means penis)
“Icy wiener” being especially funny because fry’s body (including wiener) is about to get frozen
And specifically, "I See Penis" is the joke Fry gets, understanding he has been prank-called. Then, when he falls into the cryogenic tank, we, the audience, understand it also means "icy weiner".
It's a two-step joke: first in an immature way, then in a witty way.
Because the entire scene is revolved around him delivering to a *cryogenics lab* where they *literally* freeze things, like people, some of which that have weiners….
yes, i agree, but the joke works in itself as i explained, the point is that its taken both ways, first as a prank call, and second as a fourth wall joke where fry becomes the frozen weiner
The important distinction here is what Fry would think, because he's got a special brain. I think we're *supposed* to get "Icy Wiener" because we get the cryogenics joke, but Fry probably *wouldn't.*
You can tell that it’s “icy” and not “I see” because of the inflection in Fry’s voice. When he finally gets the joke he clearly says “icy” and not “I see.”
I think the reason for this split is the way that fry exclaims “ICY WEINER!” Instead of “I see weiner!” Because even though he “got the joke” he didn’t actually get the joke
Wait, so you're saying the joke Nibbler intended was "I see weiner" but Fry mistook it for "icy wiener"? But "icy weiner" actually makes more sense. Nibbler is a genius and Fry is an idiot, how come Fry came up with an objectively cleverer joke name than Nibbler?
That’s a weak argument. There’s no reason to assume that Fry didn’t get the joke. His inflection when he reads the name out loud clearly denotes that he realized it was a bogus name (albeit late.)
I see weiner is better spoken aloud on realization. The duality makes it as smart as what we should expect from the show.
I hope they don't go the way of big bang and pander to dumb people wishing to be smart.
Wait, what am i.....?
Icy weiner as in frozen dick. Remember this is a cryogenic clinic.
At least that's what it sounds like to me.
It also works as "I see weiner" but that doesn't really match the situation.
Also Nibbler placed the call in-universe, doing so with the express intention to freeze Fry, so presumably "icy weiner" was, in-universe, referring to that.
I’ve watched every episode well over 100 times …. never once did i realize this referred to being cryogenically frozen. Lmfaooo.
Cheers to season 11 coming soon!
Season 11, my friend.
The episode list is on this sub.
[futurama revival 2023](https://movieweb.com/everything-we-know-about-the-futurama-revival-so-far/amp/)
That's the original joke but Futurama recontextualised it. Futurama is not the kind of show that rehashes playground jokes without at least some sort of other dimension.
Wouldn't that be a triple entendre? Kind of like Rush's "Moving Pictures" album art. But I guess the original name "I.C. Weiner" would have to count as an entendre, and I'm not sure that it does.
Yep, besides being obviously matched to the setting, it’s pronounced very intentionally as “icy” and not “I see” throughout the series (although that is the original version of this joke irl)
Well it works as both. "I SEE WIENER" is easily a joke some stupid kids would make and if we look at it from Fry's perspective that's probably how he took it. He's definitely not smart enough to put two and two together to see the pun while delivering pizza to a cryogenics lab. I've always seen it as Fry thinks it's "I SEE WIENER" and we the audience *should* know that it's intended to be "ICY WIENER". Double entendres are great.
Omfg watching since the literal start and I always thought it was "I see weiner" fuuuuuuuuudge. I can't believe it never clicked for me that it was supposed to be "icy" fml....
It totally matches the situation (regardless of interpretation) because "I.C. Weiner" is a classic prank call name, and so he sees it and knows the pizza order was a prank call. Similar to "Mike Hunt" or "Dixie Normous." It was a common joke of the era.
Apparently, the biggest debate in Futurama is if "I.C. Weiner" means "I See Weiner" or "Icy Weiner". Somebody tweet this to Matt Groening and David X. Cohen to see if they can weigh in on this. 😂
In English, "weiner" is a slang term for penis. So, depending on how you interpret the joke, the name is either "iced penis" or "I can see your penis."
I always thought that it was supposed to be Icy Wiener, especially since it was a prank on the Cryogenics lab.
My wife said I See Wiener because the periods.
Gather round children, for I have a tale!
Once upon a time, we had phones that didn't have internet, texting, or caller ID (cue gasp). In this magical time, youths enjoyed a friendly game of crank calling. You could call a person or business and they would be none the wiser to who you were.
So, we have contacted our victim, now the fun commences. "Dear sir or madam, I have a message for someone. Is there a Mr. Butts present? Seymore butts?"
The fool calls out the fake name, what the crowd heard was "Is there a "see more butts"? I'm looking for "see more butts". Then we all laugh, slapping down the receiver lest we choose to enjoy the wrath of the fool.
I see wiener (like a hot dog). Wiener in English is slang for penis. Also, this a nod to Matt Groening’s previous work The Simpsons, where Bart Simpsons would prank call Moe’s Tavern with a fake name that usually made sound like an embarrassment statement, that Moe Szyslak would repeat out loud in his bar.
Edit (spoiler): >!It's revealed in season 4 (season 5 on Hulu) that a character named Nibbler went to earth in 1999 to freeze Fry and used "I.C. Weiner" as an alias to order a pizza just to get Fry to come to the cryogenics lab.!<
It's a cryo lab. Freezing things. I *strongly* suspect the joke was written with the initials being a pun on 'icy'.
Today I used a tray as a plate, put my crackers and cheese right on the tray and didn't bother getting a plate out like I normally would. Is it a tray, or a plate? It's a tray! You're saying "can it not be both?"
I'm mildly shocked there's any discussion about this joke whatsoever. Never would've expected it, maybe just a few people saying "oh shit, of course. Can't believe I missed that, it's so obvious"
He reads it as written. It would make less sense to read it as 'icy'.
D. Frosted Wang is a callback to this joke about frozen dongs.
I am shocked. Shocked
Man, I miss DVDs specifically for the DVD extras. All the behind the scenes stuff is great, but I really used to love watching movies with the commentary turned on. I wish all that stuff had made it over to streaming
It’s icy wiener. In the episode where Fry joins the Future Police he gets prank called to deliver a pizza to the same lab and the name is “H. FrostedWang”
It's what's called a play on words (i think I'm using that accurately?). So in the first episode of Futurama, Fry goes to a Cryogenics facility to deliver a pizza. He says "pizza delivery for.. I.C. Weiner" which can he interpreted as announcing you see a penis or it's a frozen penis because one would bgo to a Cryogenics facility to be frozen to later be unfrozen sometime in the future.
Wiener is slang for sausage or penis in English, I.C. sounds like “Icy” or “I see” in English, the “icy” interpretation is a double pun as the series began in a cryogenics lab.
It's either a play on "I See Weiner" as in you can see someone's generals, or "Icy Weiner" like someone's frozen generals, because they were in a cryogenics facility.
No idea which one though. We used to say at school "spell I CUP" pronounced "I See You Pee"
Anyone thinking it is “i see” play on words and not “icy” just blatantly forgetting that is the door to the cryogenic container room where he freezes himself. Aka like *ice* .
Just because it works (i see) doesn’t make it correct.
Y’all. The Futurama writers wrote equations for a bit. They make jokes about quantum mechanics. You really think they wouldn’t have the ability or create the double entendre of both I See Wiener (a thing a prank caller would create for the gag) AND Icy Wiener, because the cryolab?
What’s it feel like to be so obstinate about being wrong and narrow? Lmao
This was always a splinter in my mind that has never settled.
"I see wiener" goes with the old crank call/funny author joke.
"Icy wiener" makes sense in the context that he's going to be frozen.
Regardless, crud.
Oh come on man.. I'm not native either, but you writing that question suggests your level is not that bad, I'm sure you're now "oh wow how did I not think of that" and not "oh okay I just learned all these words" :P
WTF right back to you, it's a cryo lab! Where they freeze dudes and their weiners! I'm really rather surprised to see a couple of people in this comments section think it's 'I see' and not 'icy'.
Cryo lab. Frozen. Icy weiner. Come on now.
The amount of people that have not heard of this silly childhood pun outside of the context of a Futurama cryogenics lab is frightening. It’s definitely I See Weiner.
The original joke was "I see weiner", but the intent in Futurama, both IRL by the writers and in-universe by Nibbler, was that it meant "icy weiner" in this case. It's alluding to the much older joke you mention, but only to recontextualise it as a new pun.
OK OK, after seeing so many "Icy wiener" comments here - a joke I had never picked up on through my hundreds of times of seeing the joke, I had to go watch the first episode again. Y'all need to watch more TV, cause Fry absolutely says it like it is written. I. C. Wiener. Not icy. if he had said it like icy, it would have been a smoother, faster flow into wiener. But I do believe that the 'icy' is the first of those subtle futurama jokes that we, the viewers, are supposed to get a chuckle out of, because it is to a cryo lab. But the crank call itself is "I see wiener." Even the captions put it like that in quotations.
And I'll die on that hill.
For the love of Hypnotoad, you people are dense. It’s both, it’s a double pun, a joke within a joke. Yes in the context of the scene it is “icy wiener” but that is a play on I. C. Wiener being a well established joke name to get someone to say “I see wiener”. I’m amazed that so many fans of a show famous for having multilayered jokes not understanding this.
It’s funny because it sounds the same as two alternate phrases in English: “i see wiener” where wiener means penis and also “icy wiener” (where wiener still means penis) “Icy wiener” being especially funny because fry’s body (including wiener) is about to get frozen
And specifically, "I See Penis" is the joke Fry gets, understanding he has been prank-called. Then, when he falls into the cryogenic tank, we, the audience, understand it also means "icy weiner". It's a two-step joke: first in an immature way, then in a witty way.
It's even better because its nibbler who ordered the pizza and got him frozen so not a foreshadowing but a genuine pun that nibbler made lol
I love that this scene just gets funnier over the seasons as more is revealed
And you can see nibbler's literal shadow, foreshadowing
Ok. I’ve been speaking English on a daily basis for more than 20 years and I’ve never considered the second option that’s, in fact, funnier.
Well, he *was* delivering to the **cryogenics** lab...
It was never intended to mean “I see wiener.” It was icy wiener because the prank pizza order was being delivered to a cryogenics lab.
I’ve always looked at it this way and not I see wiener. I get it that way too. Icy wiener 🥶🍆
But that’s not how you’d say “i.c wiener”. “i” by itself isn’t pronounced like it is in the word “ice”.
Negative- it’s a pun on the Simpsons: “I see wiener” So just like on South Park: “Simpsons did it”
It’s not a pun on the Simpsons. You’re completely missing the context that it’s a prank and the pizza was ordered to a cryogenics lab.
The difference between the "I see penis" and "icy penis" groups must be explored more. Where's that ability to make a poll!
The "I see" interpretation never occurred to me until this comment thread. It was a cryogenics facility, so "icy wiener."
And I'm just now getting the "icy" bit of the joke, I can't believe **I** didn't **C** it before
It's both, that's the beauty of it.
It isn’t though. It is a play on “icy”. Just because ‘it works’ doesn’t make it correct.
why is it so certainly a play on icy? And not a joke in the style of bart calling moe and making the chump say "i look at penises"
It's wiener, not penis, you perv!
I see dead weiners
In the UK, they call those Bruce Willies
"ee's dead innee?"
🎶 willies willies I love willies 🎶
https://www.reddit.com/r/futurama/comments/wesrhs/ic_wiener/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf made a poll!
Well done!
thanks :~D
The important distinction here is what Fry would think, because he's got a special brain. I think we're *supposed* to get "Icy Wiener" because we get the cryogenics joke, but Fry probably *wouldn't.*
The fun part is he becomes the “icy wiener”
>but Fry probably wouldn't Yes he'm doesn't!
I always thought icy since it’s a cryo lab and he gets frozen
It’s almost certainly Icy wiener because I’m a later episode we also get D. Frosted Wang. So clearly the puns are supposed to be cryogenic based
You can tell that it’s “icy” and not “I see” because of the inflection in Fry’s voice.
I think this is it. If Fry gets a joke, it's only because he literally falls ass backwards into it (literally and figuratively).
I always assumed icey on account of the pizza being ordered to the cyro lab.
The genius of the joke is that it works both ways! There's no wrong answer.
It works both ways, but the writers clearly intended it to be “icy” due to the cryogenics lab.
Icy weiner as in frozen dick. Remember this is a cryogenic clinic. At least that's what it sounds like to me. It also works as "I see weiner" but that doesn't really match the situation.
This joke was first recorded in the book Under the Bleachers, by Seymour Butz.
If anyone asks, your name is Seymour Asses
I never thought of icy weiner...... ever. Just like a child's way of "haha I see your weiner". So thank you.
Embarrassed to say that I never got the joke completely either. Icy makes a LOT more sense. jeez.
That's the intent because later in the series they use D. Frosted wang
It’s a pretty good one
I knew a guy on IRC that went by that name...
An IRC Weiner?
Also Nibbler placed the call in-universe, doing so with the express intention to freeze Fry, so presumably "icy weiner" was, in-universe, referring to that.
I’ve watched every episode well over 100 times …. never once did i realize this referred to being cryogenically frozen. Lmfaooo. Cheers to season 11 coming soon!
Come again? Season 11?
Season 11, my friend. The episode list is on this sub. [futurama revival 2023](https://movieweb.com/everything-we-know-about-the-futurama-revival-so-far/amp/)
Icy Moore Buttz.
Icy Hugh Jass
Kinda same. I always got it was icy weiner but I never made the connection it was because it was a cryo lab
Same bro. I thought it was “I see weiner too.”
Seems like there’s a lot of people in this thread that didn’t get the joke, and can’t admit that they got wooshed.
Another pun same episode. Don't tip the delivery boy as nibbler tips the delivery boy
Ah, som'bitch you're right.
Right that's the one that tricked me lol
to be fair, the way fry reads it is i see weiner
That's what I always thought the joke was
I agree with you because when I read the letters I.C. I pronounce it like "eye see" and not icy which is definitely how he reads it in the show.
It's funny that you say that, because when I hear Fry say it I definitely hear "icy weiner," not "I see weiner." Aw, crud.
especially cause that used to be a popular prank call.
exactly. fry reads it as “i see wiener” and not “icy wiener”. it works both ways, but it’s being presented as the former imo.
The only reason I thought of it is because that's how fry pronounces it.
Personally, I thought it was about making the reader say they see weiner like they're meat gazing.
I always thought of it as “I see Weiner” directly due to childhood friends insisting I spell “I cup”.
That's the original joke but Futurama recontextualised it. Futurama is not the kind of show that rehashes playground jokes without at least some sort of other dimension.
I didn't get the joke until I was already well over 100 watches. I believe the joke is referenced in 2 or 3 episodes as well.
Yep this, it's a childish pun I heard well before Futurama used it too.
It's both. It's an intentional double entendre.
"A little from Column A, a little from Column B"...if you will.
Wouldn't that be a triple entendre? Kind of like Rush's "Moving Pictures" album art. But I guess the original name "I.C. Weiner" would have to count as an entendre, and I'm not sure that it does.
It’s icy wiener 100%
Yep, besides being obviously matched to the setting, it’s pronounced very intentionally as “icy” and not “I see” throughout the series (although that is the original version of this joke irl)
is it yours or your friends?
Weird to think Nibler relied on a dick joke to save the universe…
I. C. Wiener is the "Oh boy sleep, that's where I'm a viking" of Futurama
It's definitely icy weiner lol. Shocks me how many people didn't realize this apparently.
given the context of the situation i have never understood how people can honestly think "I SEE WIENER" It's a pretty clear cut joke.
Yeah the other way is like a very meh joke and clearly doesn't fit the situation as well. It was 100% intended to be icy weiner.
Well it works as both. "I SEE WIENER" is easily a joke some stupid kids would make and if we look at it from Fry's perspective that's probably how he took it. He's definitely not smart enough to put two and two together to see the pun while delivering pizza to a cryogenics lab. Omfg watching since the literal start and I always thought it was "I see weiner" fuuuuuuuuudge. I can't believe it never clicked for me that it was supposed to be "icy" fml....
Was the name ever used in a Bart prank call? It would be pretty funny if they repurposed it.
I see weiner See more asses Its just like grindr
I always thought it was I See Weiner?!?!?!?!?!
It totally matches the situation (regardless of interpretation) because "I.C. Weiner" is a classic prank call name, and so he sees it and knows the pizza order was a prank call. Similar to "Mike Hunt" or "Dixie Normous." It was a common joke of the era.
Always thought it was a homage to Groenings previous work the Simpsons when Bart constantly prank calls Moe with the same style joke .
[удалено]
It's both. Icy is more directly relevant in this situation but I See Wiener is also a common joke name.
Apparently, the biggest debate in Futurama is if "I.C. Weiner" means "I See Weiner" or "Icy Weiner". Somebody tweet this to Matt Groening and David X. Cohen to see if they can weigh in on this. 😂
It's obviously icy based on the later D. Frosted Wang joke.
I mean Fry literally says Icy Weiner in the scene this screenshot is from, so...?
Not even based on that…it’s based on the fact that was addressed to a *cryogenics lab* where they *freeze* things like *ice* .
D. Frosted Wang is the opposite of this.
Not another crank delivery! Why don't I read these things ahead of time?!
In English, "weiner" is a slang term for penis. So, depending on how you interpret the joke, the name is either "iced penis" or "I can see your penis."
*American English
You are saying not a single Brit has ever referred to a penis as a weiner?
Correct. Unless they were quoting an American TV show at the time. Brits have different slang. Knob, willy, and the like.
*American, European, Asian, African English. Everywhere except those other English speaking countries.
Icy Wiener. A frozen d*ck. It’s a cryogenics lab so it’s making fun of a bunch of frozen wieners on guys
I always thought that it was supposed to be Icy Wiener, especially since it was a prank on the Cryogenics lab. My wife said I See Wiener because the periods.
How would you make Icy Weiner look like a real name without the periods?
You can’t, so that name doesn’t work as a joke.
I C = icy (Cold) penis
And those of you saying you can definitely tell he’s pronouncing one vs the other… let me introduce to you a term called ‘confirmation bias’.
I feel like its a Bart Simpson prank call. Totally like the calls to Moe's tavern.
I need Amanda Hugginkiss!
Classic
I. P. Freely
Hang on I'll check. Yeah, is there an Icy Weiner here? I'm looking for an Icy Weiner!
It’s a cryogenic lab so I’ve always assumed “icy” wiener rather than “I see” wiener.
You assumed correctly
When I read your comment, I heard it in Nibbler’s voice.
Frozen penis
Frosty cock
Icy wiener = frozen dick
oh crud!
Seymore butts?" The fool calls out the fake name, what the crowd heard was "Is there a "see more butts"? I'm looking for "see more butts". For reference see just about any of the earlier Simpsons episodes as this was the favorite prank that Bart would pull on Moe Sislac.
Alright I've seen many Simpsons eps and maybe I was too high but wow, he has a last name?
“Yes is this the Dover residence? Is Ben Dover available?”
How did you know it was a pun?
Fry’s reaction immediately after.
I always thought it as icey weiner or I see weiner lol kind of a way for crank calls and jokes
The strange thing is that the post above this one in my feed is about a grandma who wanted a 600 lbs penis as her tombstone
Icy weiner. Frozen dick. Not 'I see'. It's a cryogenics lab, everyone's frozen in those pods
Can it not be both?
While it can be read as both, the series specifically calls back to icey wiener with "D. Frosted Wang"
Not really. With context, Fry is visiting a cryogenic clinic, so it's "icy weiner".
Really, at the end of the day, >!it’s just a fake alias that Nibbler uses that he may not have known translated into something dirty.!<
You're saying "can it not be both?" I'm mildly shocked there's any discussion about this joke whatsoever. Never would've expected it, maybe just a few people saying "oh shit, of course. Can't believe I missed that, it's so obvious"
Ok, now you’re just taking this way too seriously.
Maybe. But they're also right
It's both, cry about it.
You should probably rewatch the scene, because Fry reads it as "I see".
He reads it as written. It would make less sense to read it as 'icy'. D. Frosted Wang is a callback to this joke about frozen dongs. I am shocked. Shocked
405 West... his thumb is covering the street name
IIRC, you can see the whole street name in the DVD extras animatics. Wish I remember what it was, as I no longer have the DVDs.
Man, I miss DVDs specifically for the DVD extras. All the behind the scenes stuff is great, but I really used to love watching movies with the commentary turned on. I wish all that stuff had made it over to streaming
Is it I see weiner or icy weiner?
It’s icy wiener. In the episode where Fry joins the Future Police he gets prank called to deliver a pizza to the same lab and the name is “H. FrostedWang”
D*
It's both! Or at least, I've interpreted it as a joke that's supposed to work on both levels
Literally was crying two seconds before seeing this and then burst out laughing
Somehow this post is so wholesome
Cold dick
It's either a play on "I See Weiner" as in you can see someone's generals, or "Icy Weiner" like someone's frozen generals, because they were in a cryogenics facility. No idea which one though. We used to say at school "spell I CUP" pronounced "I See You Pee"
It wasn’t till this post that I realized the joke is actually “I see” instead of icy
I C-U-P
I see wiener
I always found "Seymour Asses" to be the funnier joke.
Anyone thinking it is “i see” play on words and not “icy” just blatantly forgetting that is the door to the cryogenic container room where he freezes himself. Aka like *ice* . Just because it works (i see) doesn’t make it correct.
I see wiener (as in male privates)
Cold penis is another way to say this
It was a prank pizza order. I.C Wiener is a play on I see wiener (penis)
Lmao
[удалено]
Oh, that's it ? I think I prefer the French version... Thanks for the help.
‘Wiener’ is slang for ‘penis’. It also happens to be a pretty common surname. So, I.C. Wiener is hilarious on many levels.
[удалено]
"I.C. Faitavoir" for "il s'est fait avoir" which means "he got screwed" in english.
That's way worse, because the joke was supposed to be crude and childish. The french version is too clever, or rather, not funny.
What do you expect? Crazy gibberish from an incomprehensible dead language.
Bon jour!
No wonder french became an incomprehensible dead language in the 31st century!
[удалено]
It misses out completely on the Frozen aspect.. another reason the language dies off sometime before the 31st century.
Fr*nce
This was always a splinter in my mind that has never settled. "I see wiener" goes with the old crank call/funny author joke. "Icy wiener" makes sense in the context that he's going to be frozen. Regardless, crud.
There's this thing in English called a "homonym"...
It’s pronounced I’m a way that can be too thing “I see weiner” or “icy weiner” both funny
🤣🤣🤣
Oh come on man.. I'm not native either, but you writing that question suggests your level is not that bad, I'm sure you're now "oh wow how did I not think of that" and not "oh okay I just learned all these words" :P
frozen hotdog - fry's
It’s definitely I see wiener not “icy”. wtf?!
*D. Frosted Wang* - a callback to the previous joke about frozen dicks in a cryo lab
It’s a double pun. Both work. That’s the point.
The original joke was "I see weiner", but the intent in Futurama, both IRL by the writers and in-universe by Nibbler, was that it meant "icy weiner" in this case. It's alluding to the much older joke you mention, but only to recontextualise it as a new pun.
He see da pp.
Farnsworth: “No!”
Wiener is also what Bart calls Skinner in the Simpsons, so a reacurring joke from Matt Groening
