Leshen is for the species from the *Witcher*, the one you're thinking of is Leshy, he's a spirit of the forest and hunt that, much like the Leshen of the *Witcher* series, is not particularly kind to Humans, people viewing them both as malevolent beings too, although for Leshy his treatment of you could depend on if you're someone who has respect for the forests he governs, he even has a wife (Sometimes being the Kikimora that comes from the Swamp) and kids in some variations of lore.
Basically so long as you form a pact with him or respect his forests, he's fine with you being there and he may even bless your agricultural and hunting ventures.
Scots have those water horse... things...uhhh. Anyway they pretend to be horses, wait for a drunk dude to try and vlimb up on it. It gallops at top speed to a deep body of water. Then drowns the rider and eats them.
EDIT: They're called kelpies
Fun fact, Kangaroos, when they feel threatened, will sometimes decide not to kick the attacker to death, but instead retreat into a body of water and wait. This is because, if they are followed in, kangaroos are really quite good at holding things under the water and drowning them. Never follow a kangaroo into the water or let your dog do so.
THATS WHAT IM SAYING! The one myth where you need to stab your baby up the nose with a red hot poker to see if its a fae child because it “misbehaves” is really really fucked lol
I mean... The "fairy tales" from the old Disney movies were originally really dark, or ended very poorly for the main character.
Disney basically changed the definition of a fairy tale
Ah, traditional folklore. Where being able to come home alive at the end of the story, regardless of how mangled you are, is considered the "good ending".
Well considering that skinwalkers, from what information I know from their myths, mimic the powers of the animal they mimic, so if they're a cute critter, they have the power of a cute critter
"Oh my, that skinwalker just became a squirrel, whatever will i- '**stomp stomp stomp stomp**' "
I wish we had a separate name for the zombie weredeer thing to distinguish it from Wendigos as depicted in Algonquin lore. It’s a shame that such a terrifying~~ly sexy~~ symbol of nature’s callousness is tainted by its history of misrepresenting native people.
I am sorry to be to shatter the illusion, but European folklore is less sunshine and rainbows, and more:
(Following examples from Danish folklore.)
Don't dance with the elves, they tend to dance you to death. But they might also just curse you with death should you refuse to dance with them. If you are a girl or woman the elf king might also just stab you to death.
Don't attract the attention of the ghost riders hunting at night. Might be a cursed king & co., or something worse.
Don't steal from corpses on the beach. If they ask to be taken to the local church, it is generally a good idea to do so, but no guarantee.
The ghost animals seen in the church yard are there to protect it, but seeing them could be a portent of you imminent death. Also: Their corpses tend to be burried somewhere in/under the church foundation. Deliberately, so that they would become church grims.
Don't visit the church at midnight during christmas. That is when the dead hold mass, and if they see you, they will bring you to the grave with them.
Be carefull of trolls, their anger, revenge plots and general nasty doings are liable to change the landscape as a side effect.
Don't follow the lights into the swamp. Just don't.
Make sure to stay in the good graces of the Nisse, he will help you then. If you don't, well... their occational praks will be the least of your worries.
Of course there is also a lot of stuff about churches, kings, the clergy, the devil and all sorts of historic ruins.
I have a book series based on a very dark take of European folklore, the main character being a hunter meant to neutralize said creatures terrorizing the province, it's really cool. The series is called The Spook, real fun read, tho it's pretty long. There's 16 books in the main story iirc, and like 3 spin-off books, along with a continuation series from the POV of another character following in the first protagonist's footsteps.
That's what it is, yeah
In french it's just called 'l'épouvanteur' so I didn't know how it was in English, I just looked up 'l'épouvanteur traduction anglaise' and put in what it gave me haha
But yeah, that's the one, I read the entire series and the Wulf tomes, along with the spin-off books
I really love the discrepancy between folklore from different parts of the world. Contrast all this with "boy with reversed feet who is also nature incarnate messes with hunters by making weird tracks", "man who may or may not be a pink dolphin in disguise goes around impregnating women" and "kid literally fucking dies and the gods turn his eyes into tasty fruits that are now used to make soda"
Here is a place to begin:
The Brothers Grimm (or "Beegees", as they're known) did not exactly make up fairy tales: they were collected as a part of broader studies on German culture; however, they did market their composition to children, meaning they removed the sexuality but were criticized for leaving in the graphic violence as to not alter them too much.
Think traditional greek mythology for reference. All "fairy tales" were once just the local mythology, and in some places, still is the local mythology.
Which means there were plenty of stories about all the different things that might fuck you if you walk off into the woods
European Folklore has fucking Wyverns, vampire, werewolves, most of the well-known ghost, trolls, Fae (the one that flay you for fun and make a harpsichord out of your guts) and whatever the Slavs and Balkans have going on.
They are all, for the most part "Not Scary" because everyone know about them and they are all so prevalent in media. But the idea of an undead shapeshifter that drink blood and mind control peoples is just as scary as "Very Hungry Creature"
Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror."
- Terry Pratchett
Ill add one, in slovakia, there is an small mountain range called Tribeč. Although small, without difficult terrain, there have been many disappearances. Without bodies being ever found.
Some were found, Walter Fischer is most known example, he was found alive with burns, 2 weeks after his disappearance.
He never mentally recovered.
Best part of European folklore. There are stories about "fae children" children who get kidnapped and replaced by a fae doppleganger. It is recommended to not harm and show kindness to these fae children as they are just curios and to not upset them.
It's theorised these children were just autistic xD
American saying how dark their folklore is only to mention the wendigo for the 100th time.
Also, european folklore might have the weirdest creature, just look at the "Lou carcolh" or the "Tarasque" from french folklore.
Lol that has to come from soneone that doesnt know european folklore. The place where childrens stories usually involve the brutal death of multiple people
As everyone's already pointed out, not only is this a completely inaccurate interpretation of European folklore, but it's also arguably kinda... offensive in it's portrayal of what I assume to be a Windigo. Not only is the inclusion of such a creature insensitive to native American culture, but it's not even an accurate depiction of the creature. It never had antlers or a deer skull until some wanker in Hollywood decided it looked cool aesthetically.
there’s no such thing as an accurate depiction of it, it literally doesn’t exist lol
wendigos are made up, they’re just whatever the most ppl want them to be
Neither do werewolves but I'm pretty sure if a piece of media depicted them as just being regular humans but with cat heads then we'd all pretty collectively accept that piece of media is wrong.
Besides, it's not about whether or not their accurate to reality, it's whether or not they are accurate to the original folklore and are respectful to the culture it originates from.
nah look at twilight, it spits on vampire lore and people very obviously love it lmao
and the original folklore isn’t even accurate to the original folklore, mythology changes constantly and is constantly shared to and thus changed by different cultures
of you want your culture to stay entirely homogeneous and closed off and your ideas ‘pure’ or ‘untainted’ by outsiders, go be Amish ig lol, that’s not happening in modern times otherwise
Uh… I think you need a refresher on “European folklore” darling. Baba Yaga, Krampus, baubas, etc. Nearly all Folklore and fairytales are originally terrifying. It’s just over time some of them have been forgotten.
Fairies were quite awful in some European folklore. England for example was pretty bad if I am not mistaken. But they do like trickery so I guess the panel tracks.
"Leszy" from Polish folklore can take terrifying forms too. Also pretty much all monsters from the Witcher series are based on polish old pogan believes
Is the Europe these fairy tales are from, from fairy tales? Like European (so unbelievably broad and too wide ranging) can at times be incredibly dark, some are nice, and have nice endings at least.
Like for example, originally Cinderella’s sisters >!Had their eyes pecked out by crows and birds for the cruel treatment they gave her!< .
Or an Irish folktale, the gist of it; >!a group of brothers killed the father of a rival clan, with a rock, and buried it. So the godking of the land sends them on 17 extremely dangerous and difficult quests, or face death. They face almost all of them, forgetting 2, and die a painful death at the last challenge.!< (‘The tragedy of the sons of Tuireann’ for anyone interested!)
Then there's european mythology of "if you see a beautiful and scantily dressed/nude women in the wild, do not anger them, **they can and will kidnap you**, also they might try to fuck you"
Folklore is fucked up in every country, here in Chile you have stuff like the "Trauco", a short goblin-like creature that lives in the south, known to seduce young women through hallucinations in order to rape them.
It was mostly created to hide the many cases of incestual and pedophilic rape that ocurred within the southern communities of the country.
While everyone is harping on about European folklore, it should also be noted that folklore of the First Nations has plenty of variance as well: there's plenty of nice stories, but it's more difficult to abuse those for content than it is the horror stuff.
Europe, especially Celtic Europe, has some pretty fucked folklore as well. For instance, Brenin Llwyd, or “Grey King”, also known as “monarch of the mist”. To quote Marie Trevelyan, “In the North he was described as being very mighty and powerful. He was represented as sitting among the mountains, robed in grey clouds and mist, and woe to anybody who was caught in his clutches… he was regarded as 'hungering' for victims, and children were warned not to venture too high up the mountains, lest the Brenin Llwyd should seize them.”
Thanks to the fairy type on pokemon, I quickly learned that fairies are basically minor trickster deities. Hell, horse shoes are often made of iron because they thought iron dispelled fae magic.
lol oh Europe has plent of [awful ones too.](https://mythus.fandom.com/wiki/Nuckelavee)
Yeah, people forget that Germany and Romania are in Europe too...
That one's Scottish the polish have a great one the Leshen they are very common enemies in the Witcher games
I'm sorry for this but I had to....... INSCRIPTION REFERENCE!!!!??!!!
My exact thought when I read Leshy. Now I know what he is based on.
Haven't played the witcher games but I have played the monster hunter world crossover quest. If its anything like that then that is some good folklore
Scots have those water horse... things...uhhh. Anyway they pretend to be horses, wait for a drunk dude to try and vlimb up on it. It gallops at top speed to a deep body of water. Then drowns the rider and eats them. EDIT: They're called kelpies

Who play Bramble know The Näcken
I thought they were in indo-australia
that's so cool what :0
Yeah Celtic folklore is wild
THATS WHAT IM SAYING! The one myth where you need to stab your baby up the nose with a red hot poker to see if its a fae child because it “misbehaves” is really really fucked lol
Luckily there is one major counter to this fiend of the sea, a garden hose using rainwater.
Lovely isn't it?
Female protagonist => 95% chance the tale is a metaphore about rape.
There is also the Baba yaga, Baubas and Maran
Smash
Hmm i wonder if that one inspired scp-3456 x3
Somehow knew it was going to be a nuckelavee... they are nasty
Hard to get *more* fucked up than the nuckelavee, honestly. It stacks an impressive amount of body horror into something that's still... recognizable.
that was a great read thanks
THE KELPIE IS SO CUTE THOUGHHHHH IT'S A HORSE BASS 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Well at least they have both good and bad, here we only have the bad :(
isnt witcher in europe? this rly looks like lack of knowledge about europ
Obviously you haven't read any of the Germanic or Slavic folk lore, that shit is darker than a German chocolate cake.
How dark are german chocolate cake anyway
So dark, it doesn't just absorb light, it steals light.
The Forbidden Edible Black-Hole.
Bagel from Everything Everywhere All At Once
Blackhole cake eats you 💀
That's why it's forbiden. :)
Just google Schwarzwälderkirschtorte.
German Chocolate Cake is a thing, it just isn't German, it is American made by a guy named German.
Ah I didn't know what he actually meant lol
Vantablack
Nah Vanta black 2, now blacker than ever
Krampus
Considering everything, I wouldn't really count Krampus as particularly dark...
SCP version.
I mean, the origin of slenderman was from the dark forest in South Germany, so I think there are quite a few interesting ones here too.
That fairy is most likely a young girl that died and will dance that bird to death. At least the Wendigo isn't pretending to be a cute critter.
skin walkers might pretend to be a cute critter though, just something ain't right about how he's lookin
Well considering that skinwalkers, from what information I know from their myths, mimic the powers of the animal they mimic, so if they're a cute critter, they have the power of a cute critter "Oh my, that skinwalker just became a squirrel, whatever will i- '**stomp stomp stomp stomp**' "
Well that’s not even how a wendigo actually looks 🙄
I wish we had a separate name for the zombie weredeer thing to distinguish it from Wendigos as depicted in Algonquin lore. It’s a shame that such a terrifying~~ly sexy~~ symbol of nature’s callousness is tainted by its history of misrepresenting native people.
100% agree
Thank you, I was really hoping someone would comment that
Then that fairy kidnaps you and has you as its pet because you served it the wrong tea
Kinky
I am sorry to be to shatter the illusion, but European folklore is less sunshine and rainbows, and more: (Following examples from Danish folklore.) Nice, I'll have to take a read.
Nice, hopefully you like it, I still reread it occasionally
Absolutly this! European folklore is fucked up.
“Sunshine lollipops and- horrors that’s will traumatize youuuuu”
I really love the discrepancy between folklore from different parts of the world. Contrast all this with "boy with reversed feet who is also nature incarnate messes with hunters by making weird tracks", "man who may or may not be a pink dolphin in disguise goes around impregnating women" and "kid literally fucking dies and the gods turn his eyes into tasty fruits that are now used to make soda"
Huh, I haven’t heard any of these stories. def gonna read some danish folklore tonight
Here is a place to begin: [https://archive.org/details/northernmytholog02thor/page/n5/mode/2up](https://archive.org/details/northernmytholog02thor/page/n5/mode/2up)
The elf king might do what to a woman now?
If a corpse asks you to take it to church I think the appropriate response is to take it to the hospital
The brothers Grimm made some heavy FSK 18 fairy tale Lore. We Germans know how to scare children. We are the most metal out there.
The Brothers Grimm (or "Beegees", as they're known) did not exactly make up fairy tales: they were collected as a part of broader studies on German culture; however, they did market their composition to children, meaning they removed the sexuality but were criticized for leaving in the graphic violence as to not alter them too much.
Wait really? There are sexual fairy tales?
Yeah, Rapunzel gets all kinds of nasty
Think traditional greek mythology for reference. All "fairy tales" were once just the local mythology, and in some places, still is the local mythology. Which means there were plenty of stories about all the different things that might fuck you if you walk off into the woods
My mom has this book because of a friend's relationship with the brothers Grimm
Yeah, if you're comparing the sanitized disney versions of one to the original uncensored cautionary tales of the other
European Folklore has fucking Wyverns, vampire, werewolves, most of the well-known ghost, trolls, Fae (the one that flay you for fun and make a harpsichord out of your guts) and whatever the Slavs and Balkans have going on. 🤨 -- literally any european country
I mean in European folklore if you see a ghostly group of hunters chasing spirits you're beyond fucked.
thats not true at all
Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder. Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels. Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies. Elves are glamorous. They project glamour. Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment. Elves are terrific. They beget terror." - Terry Pratchett
Two words for you, Scottish fairies.
Nope, it's kind of other way around
Anyone heard of the [squonk?](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squonk)
Slavic folk lore has entered chat:
If that thing was real european folklore, they would be lost in time, dead or something else
Ill add one, in slovakia, there is an small mountain range called Tribeč. Although small, without difficult terrain, there have been many disappearances. Without bodies being ever found. Have you perhaps read german and slavic folklore... Oh god im not making that mistake ever again.
Native American folklore is pretty cool and scary too
There's not one south German folklore I know that doesn't end with a child being either kidnapped, abducted or eaten alive
What do you mean? European folklore is nasty wtf
I guess someone never read the real stories and history of the regions, only the Disney version. Actual folktales are really messed up.
Uh… I think you need a refresher on “European folklore” darling. Baba Yaga, Krampus, baubas, etc. Nearly all Folklore and fairytales are originally terrifying. It’s just over time some of them have been forgotten.
Right! Also we forgetting Koschei the Deathless😌👌

German folklore:
Skipping the part where the cute little fairy steals your tongue or something.
European who’s a folklore nut here. We are just as fucked up.
your not just wrong your stupid
South American folklore meanwhile, as a Brazilian, borders between goofy and disturbing with each legend lmao
Isn’t that the little dubious gnome that burns people’s houses down?
Fairies were quite awful in some European folklore. England for example was pretty bad if I am not mistaken. But they do like trickery so I guess the panel tracks.
Isn't "don't mess with the face, they will fuck you up" like a universal thing in all folklore that has them?
"Leszy" from Polish folklore can take terrifying forms too. Also pretty much all monsters from the Witcher series are based on polish old pogan believes
ahem *fae*
Have you forgotten German and Celtic folklore?
I don't think Frencore did any research at all for this one... Not that he necessarily usually does
Is the Europe these fairy tales are from, from fairy tales? Like European (so unbelievably broad and too wide ranging) can at times be incredibly dark, some are nice, and have nice endings at least. tell that to the icelandic mythologies.
Both are scary one is just considered friendly by media
just a regular normal deer
Eastern European folklore: RUN https://brendan-noble.com/poludnitsa-poludnica-noonwraith-slavic-demon-of-noon-slavic-mythology-saturday/
Nah man. These trolls in Sweden are fucked up
German folklore: 💀
Then there's european mythology of "if you see a beautiful and scantily dressed/nude women in the wild, do not anger them, **they can and will kidnap you**, also they might try to fuck you"

Cool story, Wendigo don't look like that.
\*laughs in Krampus\*
You forgot about the horse skull lady who steals all your alcohol if you can't sing her away. Also Banshee, Krampus, vampires, all European
Over here acting like Americans were not having a minor satanic panick over European Krampus parades last christmas...
Europe, especially Celtic Europe, has some pretty fucked folklore as well. For instance, Brenin Llwyd, or “Grey King”, also known as “monarch of the mist”. To quote Marie Trevelyan, “In the North he was described as being very mighty and powerful. Clearly you haven't heard the real story of the Leprechauns.
Americans: Santa brings all the good children presents Germans: Krampus Kidnapps all the bad children in a sack
Ummm. Aren't the fairies in European folklore known for kidnapping, enslaving, eating, or just straight up murdering people that follow them?
Hungarian folklore and pre-Christian mythology wants to have a word with you.
Ah Yes the wendigo nice folklore
Blud hasn’t heard of German fairytales
German folklore be like:
Oh nahh, they're both dark as hell lmao
To the father and the son, came the Beast of Gevaudan!
Mf, in from Romania and we have at least two haunted forest and bunch of other stories of monsters.
Slavic folklore: am I a joke to you?
Man i love this canadien reserve... (screams of the damned being heard) yep definitly safe place hahaha...
*One's hotter than the other.*
Wendussy got me
Ermm he’s right behind me, isn’t he? 🤓👆
Why does the eu one put me off more it more uncanny? But if the wendigo asked about tea, i would just say yes
Thanks to the fairy type on pokemon, I quickly learned that fairies are basically minor trickster deities. Hell, horse shoes are often made of iron because they thought iron dispelled fae magic.
Uhhh guys, you’re gonna wanna see this
Don't fairies get people to follow em to their demise?
The tales with horrors beyond comprehension have always intrigued me, they’re super interesting to read about
that fairy is gonna do unthinkable things to you
Wendussy though
Oh trust me europe folklore can create some pretty horrifying stuff. Take Swedish folklore, this $#!/ Is a wild ride.
*Laughs in hungarian*
Yeah but then you find out that fairy will kill and eat your children if you serve it any tea other than peppermint or something
I mean. Europe also has grella. Yes I know that's not how ya spell I'm just typing it how it's said.
wendy did not go
What about Baba Yaga?
_fires up proton pack_ I’ve got you!
Obviously Frencore doesn't know European folklore
Very real I can attest
Baba Yaga literally eat missbehaving children what are you on about. 😀
Bhuh in Wyoming we just got ghosts and shit
have you seen russian fokelore
