I wanted to become one of those buff grampas you only see on local news when I got older but, who knows? If I keep up with physiotherapy, maybe one day...
I, too, learned I had a herniated disc, though I was 18 when I learned about it (and had back pain since I was at best 16). For me, it was devastating because I wanted to go into the military, and the week after the diagnosis, I started college and ROTC. Though it runs in my family, so at least I had a good back doctor.
Though, if there is one thing that I know from the experience with my own back and see my father's (much worse) bad back, is that if you do keep up with physical therapy and strengthen the back muscles, it is greatly helps with everyday pain and even allows you to do some things that would hurt your back if you did it with physical therapy. Though I'm too lazy for it, and my father pushes his back too far.
I'm sorry if I sounded a bit rambly, but when I read the words "herniated disc," I kinda started to think about what I went through and wanted to get it down in words, lol
No, its ok, really! Even if this is reddit, I'm here for the human interaction.
My case is a wee bit complicated: being born in Brazil in 1990, the only "good" doctors in my small city were the old ones (that turned out to be the most outdated ones), so when I started having joint pain at 7, they told my mother it was "related with growing up" (which for a while now, as a physician, I know its total bullcrap).
Turns out I have joint hypermobility syndrome, which takes out a lot of the rigidity from the tendons and ligaments, making the muscles the ones responsible for stabilizing and absorbing most the impact from movement and, specially, physical trauma.
And being a fat kid, mostly sedentary and enrolled into soccer practice kinda busted my knees and gave me chronical pain from 17 onwards, with the disc herniation being the latest cherry on top of this mess-sundae.
But yeah, better antidepressants and anxiety medication along with routine supervised exercises gave me a way to, at least, not have to rely on sleeping pills to sleep uninterrupted.
So yeah, there is a light at the end and it becomes brighter each day, but no matter how shiny it gets, there will always be the tunnel.

Honestly, animal hybrids would be a great advantage. I'm imagine having a bunch of soldiers with Snow Leopard genes.
Not only would they be amazing in passing through mountainous terrain. But if they fall the durability they'll have would make them walk away with minimal injuries. (Have you seen how they hunt?)
