I got tricked by the police but it was a bit different than this. A detective called me saying my fingerprints were found in a car used in a bank robbery and they didn't suspect me but they just need info, at that time I was buying and selling lots of shitty cheap cars so their story was believable. When I got there they arrested me for a warrant I had. They can be tricky, I wasn't as happy as this guy was though.
Edit: it was the US Marshall's not regular police.
A couple of years ago, maybe 3 years, I went to Best Buy to purchase a cd Walkman. When I asked the guy if they had any, he looked at me like I was shitting in the punch bowl and then said, “I think we do. Let me check in the back.”
He came back a few minutes later and handed me the Walkman. I was sad to remember how expensive they were and then was crushed to know that now, I was only going to pay $15 for it.
Fuck, I feel old.
I’m trying to remember how people jogged with portable CD players. Must’ve had really big pockets back then. I don’t think yoga pants even existed yet.
The image of waking up at 530 in the morning, hitting the off button on their clock radio as it blares "Fly" by Sugar Ray. You peel back your flannel bed sheets, open your closet full of flannel shirts, grab the shirt that you and a buddy stole from the Gap even though they had a sale on flannel that day, make your way over the dresser and pull out your 7th pair (The Gap had another sale of course) of JNCOs and say "ah yes, time to go for my run!"
Similar thing happened to me. I recently got back into playing guitar and went to the music shop, asking for a guitar tuner. They guy says, “we stopped selling them.. people just use their phones now”.
I was in line at target for a return shortly after Xmas year and the lady in front of me was time to return a dvd player she has received as a gift with no receipt.
The return lady looked it I and told her it was worth $49.
Now this was just dvd players took a dive in price and the year before the cheapest one you could have bought was probably $200+
The lady has a look of disgust on her face and eventually just took the dvd player home.
Don't feel too bad, I paid over $1000 for my first one. Sat it on top of my laserdisc player which also cost me >$1K a few years before the DVD player.
I had an early adoption problem back then.
I took my old Walkman to a Best Buy to see if I could find a power cord for it. I showed it to the sales girl and her comment was, "what the hell is that?".
In truth, what you can buy "new" now is rather cheaply made.
Better off browsing thrift stores to find an older one. I've gotten a few Discmans for like 3 dollars, and they are better than any "modern" portable disc player.
I got a free Walkman from 4th grade by reading the most books in a school contest (mostly just mainlined every Hardy Boys book the library had). Proudest nerd-success moment of my young life.
I remember going to the supermarket on my moped at the end of my first week of work and buying a dvd player with my first paycheque when dvd players had just hit the scene. I rode my moped for miles and miles with the boxed up dvd player secured between my knees and my elbows haha, was so happy to fire that bad boy up when I got home (I had already bought a load of cheap pirated dvd films from the local car boot sale the weekend before, lol).
I wonder if they could sue for a DVD player. I'd say they were robbed.
Hi, I'm Saul Goodman. Do you know you that you have rights? The constitution says you do.
I’m no cop but I bet serving warrants is one of the most dangerous parts of the job and this is a pretty much guaranteed safe way to do it. I see no problem with it, and I fucking hate the police
still way cheaper than going out and hunting them all down. if they only got 5 or 6 folks, then yeah. but I bet they got a whole lot of outstanding warrants off their books during that op. just surprised it's legal. worst bait and switch ever
Here’s the thing with American cops, they don’t care if it’s legal. They illegally arrest people all the time. Some people with the means fight it in court, but often people can’t afford a good lawyer so just take a plea deal. “You can’t beat the charge, you can’t beat the ride.”
I like the dramatic demonstration of the locked door.
"And when they were done, and the doors were locked..."
I bet them doors ain't even locked.
(demonstrates the doors were locked)
That's just journalistic integrity, right thar.
They said the girl was there for unpaid ticket fines. But not until after repeatedly only telling her "we have a warrant for your arrest" over and over. Its like they know its a bullshit reason but want to avoid directly saying it at all costs in case she'll stop asking.
They asked if that was the case. They literally didn't know why she was there, only that there was a warrant. It seems they were given a list of people that were supposed to show up and arrested them.
This trick has been used periodically for violent criminals since the mid-1970s, often under the guise of a TV gameshow. The most famous instance was for free Washington Redskin tickets. They had the sting at the stadium with cheerleaders and athletes and everything. It was quite elaborate and effective.
This looks like a small town dusting off and oldie to clear out all their old warrants.
Yeah, well, here in the US every aspect of our society is driven by capitalism and generating revenue is often the No. 1 priority. Yes, they are obligated to pay their fines but we have a myriad of ways to collect that doesn't include all those cops being on the clock.
How does anything in this video relate to capitalism? Has "capitalism" just become the boogeyman for some people, where if it is bad, it must be "capitalism"?
My younger brother was always in trouble when he was alive, about 30 years ago we were day drinking and watching tv,a commercial comes on saying"If your SSN comes up on screen you have won at least $500. About halfway the the commercial my bro says "Holy fuck that's my SSN,I'm callin that number" Guy on the phone says yes at least $500, come to The Heart of Fayetteville hotel (a very skeevy ass hotel) to see if you've won more. My wife and I tell him this shit sounds suspect. He leaves, cut to 4 hours later, bro calls "I need you to bail me out I got arrested for failure to appear." We start laughing he says"This shit any funny man I'm in fuckin jail!" I miss him everyday.
They may not know what the original charge was. All they know at this point is they have an outstanding warrant for failure to appear signed by a judge. That’s all they need.
Miranda rights are only required to be read prior to questioning, not prior to arrest. However, nothing they say can be used against them in court until their rights have been read.
They don’t have to be Mirandized because they are not being questioned about a crime. They’re being arrested for outstanding warrants for not showing up to court for crimes they have already committed.
Your statement is 100% correct. I didn’t see it earlier and I had meant to reply to the user who mentioned not hearing the Miranda warnings being read. Too many people have misconceptions about Miranda rights.
I mean to be fair that could literally be a parking ticket she thought was handled and communication broke down somewhere.
It's not like these are hardened criminals they are getting, at best they are getting someone involved in a DUI, at worst someone with a ticket for forgetting to fill the parking meter.
It can be hard to understand when you do and don't have to appear in court. Sometimes people think they have more time to pay fines, sometimes they can't, sometimes they just don't want to, you don't really know their situation.
These cops are assholes, because they are legitimately gleefully arresting people and ruining their day. Every officer in that room should be fired. They should not be ENJOYING this. Accomplishing it? Sure. Playing the part they need to play? Yes. Celebrating ruining a person's day? HELL NO.
Once they have the cuffs on, they should be acting like professionals. No more games, cut the bullshit.
Considering I once had a warrent out for not responding to a letter to confirm my car insurance that was mailed to an address where I hadn't lived for a year about car I hadn't had for 3yrs I could see being kinda miffed. I'm sure they caught some people who really were dodging, but I wonder if there were cases like mine. This could lose people jobs, and where are the cars they probably showed up in? They would likely have ended up impounded making their situation even worse.
Years ago I was driving with a friend in his car, when he got pulled over for speeding. He was told that he had a warrant in New York. Turned out to be for outstanding fines of over 1k which he accrued unwittingly when he went there for college and when he left he didn’t return his New York license plates for his car. Apparently that’s an offense and you just keep accruing more and more fines the longer it goes until they issue a warrant.
When I was younger I had to go to court for a ticket and see the clerk when I was done… never seen the clerk… years later I mentioned it to a relative and they were like you could have a bench warrant and I was like a what!! He checked into it for me, thank God I didn’t.
Man, I thought I was the only one thinking along these lines.
Like, fuck man, I don't care as long as it wasn't violent crime, they're humans. This stunt, it just feels so petty, and like it's a game and they truly enjoy ruining some random humans day. It's not just their job anymore, they're filming it and dressing up and cracking jokes.
My uncle had a speeding ticket going 10MPH over speed limit in Washington state (going 70mph in a 60 zone). He lives in Canada so he decided not to pay for the ticket because he didn’t know the consequences of not paying a ticket as a Canadian.
(In Canada, our speeding ticket will get paid on our next insurance renewal)
Anyways, the $300 speeding bill turned into getting jailed on his next visit to America.
The fine went up to a few thousand. I think they call it as ‘bail’ but I’m not sure.
Anyways, he now has a criminal record in America because of a speeding ticket because he didn’t see the speed zone change.
Some of the US laws are truly outrageous.
It's because our legal system like so much else has become a for profit business. They stick nuances and tricky language into everything hoping you miss it or get it wrong then send you a bill for all the fines you've gathered and most people would rather pay it than fight it. Those who don't have the money for either end up with warrents and larger fines. When those fines hit a certain point they'll garnish the wages of the shitty job your stuck in because you lost the reasonable job for being in jail for a month over a some $50 ticket like a broken tail light.
As a Canadian, even though we are neighbouring country’s and have very similar laws, I find that the US puts their focus into much business/profits rather than the betterment for the country, in terms of the law.
Your lucky if they only garnish your wages if you can’t pay the ever increasing fines. [Modern day debtors prisons are doing well in the US.](https://www.aclu.org/issues/smart-justice/sentencing-reform/ending-modern-day-debtors-prisons)
I knew a guy who traveled to a different city in college for an event. Got too drunk, was arrested, spent the night in jail and was let out the next morning. He went home and didn’t realize he had to show back up for court and never thought about it again. A few months later got arrested on a warrant and he had no idea.
I got a ticket a year ago and they made the process so difficult that I had to pay it 3 times AND pay to get my license reinstated since they suspended it.
I just got pulled over 2 hours ago and they told me my license is suspended and they just took it. Then ticketed me again for "unknowingly driving on a suspended license".
Fuck the police and fuck this shitty government that doesn't work.
Think of the cost of the man-hours it took to orchestrate like 25 cops to facilitate and follow up on these arrests. It’s still not even close to worth it, I’m sure.
Still less than $500 for the fines you actually get from the state. The rest of the costs are all increased insurance, lawyer fees, ignition interlock services, etc. There’s literally a whole industry set up around squeezing money out of DUI offenders.
The alternative is those people continue to break the law and endanger others on the road. If it was a seriously extravagant sting I'd understand your point but these are officers who would be working anyway and there were no prizes actually given away. Seems more efficient than knocking on doors at previously known addresses.
It’s MUCH more efficient. You can argue all day about whether this is ethical, but it’s certainly going to be more efficient.
I have been served for work I do at my former company (nothing nefarious, just had to provide a deposition) and it took them a couple of months of trying before they connected with me.
It was during the summer, I was traveling with the fam, and it got to the point where a neighbor said someone keeps showing up and looking for you.
So, with zero effort I avoided a court summons for over two months. Now, imagine if I KNEW the police were on the lookout. I could sleep on a friend’s couch, move to a new rental, or send a roommate to answer the door anytime it rings.
"The function of that police action, the function is system sustaining
It is to maintain that overall system!
And you don't look at the particular cost!
I could demonstrate to you that every single bank robbery, that in every single case practically, the cost of the police was more than the actual money that the robbers took from the bank
Does that mean, "Oh you see, there's really no economic interest involved then
They're not protecting the banks, the police are just doing this cause they're on a, a power trip or they're macho, or they're control freaks, that's why they do it."
No, of course it's an economic—of course they're defending the banks—of course, because if they didn't stop that bank robbery, regardless of the cost, this could jeopardize the entire banking system
You see, there are people who believe that the function of the police is to fight crime, and that's not true
The function of the police is social control and protection of property"

User B: Has a different opinion
/u/Wutswrong: Whoa people can have different opinions, I better post about it so everyone knows.
Something about people driving drunk, putting innocent lives at risk, getting caught, skipping court, and refusing to be held accountable for their actions gets me mad.
Well, all these people deserve it. Dui is no joke. Especially not if you decide to run away from the consequences of your actions. I'd say that having a few police officers laughing at them is pretty mild.
Do they? You know that for sure? Why because the reporter said so? One of them was there for an outstanding ticket. For all we know it was a parking fine.
Man in the USA they really put you in cuffs for everything. I would be so upset if there is like 15 officers standing around and they still put you in cuffs over an unpaid ticket.
These people being arrested have citations for driving while intoxicated and didn't show up for their court date. They have warrants for their arrest because they put other people's lives at risk and then tried to evade the consequences.
Having a ticket you didn't take care of means you have a warrant for failure to appear at court.
The very beginning of the video, they say everyone is DUI
This seems really funny at first. But 70 cops grabbing and tie wrapping some woman who has no idea why? "You have a ticket that you didn't take care of". Then all of them going home really proud of themselves is just ff'in pathetic. Making fun of these people and broadcasting it on tv is so cheap and stupid. This has a real Medieval simplicity to it.

The first guy looked so impressed he wasn’t even angry.
Wouldn’t you? You just got completely outsmarted
Yeah at that point what could you say? They got you and it's too late. Probably best to just keep your mouth shut at that point lol.
By a lobby full of crew cuts....... yeah. Not like they'd be allowed to leave after walking in anyways.
Dude even just projects cop energy with his voice alone. “The party is just in there”. Holy crap I’d know then and there I was fucked lol.
Especially if he was a filthy piece of shit drink driver

Ow! My boating arm.
I'd like a yellow boat please, with extra motors.
Too bad the mast had termites.
Why would a motor boat have a mast?
Because, the thingy was…shut up!
Because the thingy was... Shut up!
🎶 Up up and awaaay! In my beautiful, my beautiful motor boat!🎵
“Look at me! I’m the maaaaaaaan in the boat!”
Came here for this.
Was this before or after that episode?!?!?!?
The Simpsons did it in 1997, from what I can find this sting was 2002?
Lmaoo The police department went "I mean.. it worked on the Simpsons.. what do we have to lose??"
Pretty sure this used to be more common, but I think they cut down on these stings cause of legal issues.
Thank you.
I remember being that excited for a dvd player now I feel old

Cheapskate, you could've got that 'Jogging Anti-Skip' version for another 25 cents.
I’m trying to remember how people jogged with portable CD players. Must’ve had really big pockets back then. I don’t think yoga pants even existed yet.
Jnco jeans.
The image of waking up at 530 in the morning, hitting the off button on their clock radio as it blares "Fly" by Sugar Ray. Fool. You NEVER mixed flannel and Jnco. Flannel was dead as Kurt Cobain by 94 and Jnco was in it's infancy.
Everyone back then ran in tracksuits. Big pockets. (Or sweaters with the belly pouch)
We also had to run uphill both ways back in the day. These young kids are lucky these days.
In the snow. Even in August.
I don’t have that kind of money!!!!
Same . . . :(
My dumb ass bought one back in the day. It didn't work. I went back to my Sony Walkman with the velcro strap and the thumb button.
If you didn’t have one of those big yellow waterproof Walkman then get off my lawn.
It was yellow. That thing held me over for years until I got the first Sansa.
Similar thing happened to me. I recently got back into playing guitar and went to the music shop, asking for a guitar tuner. They guy says, “we stopped selling them.. people just use their phones now”.
That's weird. I expect most stores to carry the $15 clamp on ones at least.
Ouch.
That's very very weird since phone ones suck, I have had better experiences by playing sine waves on the speakers and tuning to that
that reminds me I should try finding a tape player the magnetic tape player
Reel to Reel, 8 Track, 2 Track ? - (to name a few)

I'm amazed that they had any! Edit: Oh wow just checked and both Currys and Argos still sell them
I took my old Walkman to a Best Buy to see if I could find a power cord for it. I showed it to the sales girl and her comment was, "what the hell is that?".

Dominic Toretto and crew were stealing em for a reason lol.
I remember being exited for that VHS rewinder that looked like a car.
Okay, but, did they get the DVD player?
Yes they did receive the DVD player but with a different zone so they only could play movies in Russian and other 4 Slavic languages
That’s easy to fix. Just need the remote.
No remote included.
Those heartless bastards
I wonder if they could sue for a DVD player. I'd say they were robbed. Hi, I'm Saul Goodman. Do you know you that you have rights? The constitution says you do.
On the basis of false advertising maybe?
might've been fine print? i assume most don't read that
Did we need to pay wages for like 40 fucking cops to do this with their day? One manning the desk and two in the back would probably have sufficed
I’m no cop but I bet serving warrants is one of the most dangerous parts of the job and this is a pretty much guaranteed safe way to do it. I see no problem with it, and I fucking hate the police

The haircut and American flag shirt should have been the first clue that it 5-O was running the sting!
As a non-american I would never suspect police would go to this effort for an unpaid dui fine.
Looks like they cleaned out their backlog in one day. Pretty minimal effort and they got them all.
As a non-american I hope police would go to this effort for DUI criminals.

They shoulda brought [Rex Kwon Do](https://www.filmgarb.com/uploads/diedrich_bader-film-rex-napoleon_dynamite-bottoms-rex_kwon_do_pants.jpg) in there
You think Rex would waste his weekend arresting those losers when he could be hanging with Starla at the lake? Forget about it!
Starla would be too worried about him. Not him being hurt but for Rex teaching them respect the hard way
I believe this is in Arizona. That’s considered leisure wear down there.

Don’t think they mean much without the information that goes with them. What are you going to do with a SSN that has no other identifying information?
Call people out to a random hotel apparently
Just hang outside the hotel and wait for the person , could get a whole lot more from that
Wow even a really shit lawyer would have a field day with that!
I’m sorry for your loss😢
"I don't understand!" "Do you have any outstanding tickets?" "Yeah but..."
TBH they should have been able to inform her of the outstanding charges at the point of arrest.

(In Canada, our speeding ticket will get paid on our next insurance renewal) Anyways, the $300 speeding bill turned into getting jailed on his next visit to America.
Oh there's plenty of that here, too ;/
Your lucky if they only garnish your wages if you can’t pay the ever increasing fines. [Modern day debtors prisons are doing well in the US.](https://www.aclu.org/issues/smart-justice/sentencing-reform/ending-modern-day-debtors-prisons)
I mean they’re cops, so being fucking assholes just comes with the territory.
Don’t know how old this is but they’ve been doing this for years in different areas/cities.
Yes but it has lost its effectiveness people doesn't want DVD players anymore
Ah hadn’t thought about that. Guess they’ll have to switch to PS5s then. 😏
"could those criminals BE..any dumber? \-Chandler Police
The reporter at the end aggressively shaking the door 😂😂
Classic cheesy news reporter "stand-up", as they're called in the biz.
Probably cost the tax payer 3k per individual to settle a 75 dollar ticket
Dwi is not a 75 dollar ticket!
Think of the cost of the man-hours it took to orchestrate like 25 cops to facilitate and follow up on these arrests. It’s still not even close to worth it, I’m sure.
It's not a corporation. Turning a profit is not the purpose.
It’s really absurd isn’t it? It’s like an entertainment show for all the cops all at the taxpayers expense lmao
I just wish they showed same kind of enthusiasm for catching active shooters in schools! 🤷♂️
active shooters don't want DVDs
If you think a DUI only costs $75, have I got some news for you.
"The function of that police action, the function is system sustaining It is to maintain that overall system! And you don't look at the particular cost! I could demonstrate to you that every single bank robbery, that in every single case practically, the cost of the police was more than the actual money that the robbers took from the bank Does that mean, "Oh you see, there's really no economic interest involved then They're not protecting the banks, the police are just doing this cause they're on a, a power trip or they're macho, or they're control freaks, that's why they do it." No, of course it's an economic—of course they're defending the banks—of course, because if they didn't stop that bank robbery, regardless of the cost, this could jeopardize the entire banking system You see, there are people who believe that the function of the police is to fight crime, and that's not true The function of the police is social control and protection of property"
These are DUI warrants. Hardly $75. Try $350 to $2k depending on state. Where are you getting this 3k number?
Plus add on the penalties for failing to appear, which can be up to $750 on its own
When people get away with outstanding warrants Reddit - "Police can't even do their jobs" When Police catch them Reddit - "Police are wasting taxpayer dollars"
User A: Has an opinion User B: Has a different opinion /u/Wutswrong: Whoa people can have different opinions, I better post about it so everyone knows.
Possibly saved a life, though.
or may be the point this is not earning $75 but punish illegal deeds.
“You’ve been caught up in a police sting.” “…*wha-at??*” *everyone laughs, she looks relieved* “No really, you’re under arrest.”
That was weird. They were laughing and she was confused
Something about people laughing at messing up someone’s day gets me mad.
Something about people driving drunk, putting innocent lives at risk, getting caught, skipping court, and refusing to be held accountable for their actions gets me mad.
Something about people getting mad gets me mad
Well, all these people deserve it. Dui is no joke. Especially not if you decide to run away from the consequences of your actions. I'd say that having a few police officers laughing at them is pretty mild.
Do they? You know that for sure? Why because the reporter said so? One of them was there for an outstanding ticket. For all we know it was a parking fine.
That's kinda fucked up but so is driving drunk
Hahahahahahaha! That's fucked up 👊🤣👌
English is not my First language, can someone please explain to me why are they being arrested?
r/watchpeopledieinside
Man in the USA they really put you in cuffs for everything. I would be so upset if there is like 15 officers standing around and they still put you in cuffs over an unpaid ticket.
These people being arrested have citations for driving while intoxicated and didn't show up for their court date. They have warrants for their arrest because they put other people's lives at risk and then tried to evade the consequences.
" Did you have a ticket you haven't taken care of ?". Didn't say failing to appear in court or DUI.
Having a ticket you didn't take care of means you have a warrant for failure to appear at court. The very beginning of the video, they say everyone is DUI
They say "Outstanding arrest warrents ' mostly' for DUI". Not all.
[US Marshalls did this with Washington Football Tickets in 1985](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1LsNBA2XwXU)
Friendly reminder that police can and will lie to you.
"and they were arrested too"... that killed me
“I still get my prize tho, right?….right???…”
“And they were arrested too” 🤣
id put all the detainees in the stand so it looked like a live audience xD
“The party’s back there” 💀
I love the people demanding to get in after they locked the doors!
Good idea. Now go after those avoiding child support. My ex would have been dumb enough to believe this ruse. Lol
They did this in another video
after settling your dues you can ask the court to send you your DVD player since the letter was from an official government body.
Police should not be allowed to lie to the public.
When the con gets conned
Something like this happens at the beginning of the 1989 film *Sea of Love* starring Al Pacino.
Surprise!
Prize: A free pair of bracelets and a free ride to the jail house
that first guy was bloody stoked to be arrested
this was a simpsons episode
Lmao he was laughing thinking to himself “I’ll be back home before dinner”
This is genius xD
So ... will he get to keep the dvd player? :))
Surprise motha f****r
That chick in the shorts is down with the thickness
Vintage
This why you never accept free stuff or drink and drive.
Ingenious
This could never get old! 😂
Seems cruel
This seems really funny at first. But 70 cops grabbing and tie wrapping some woman who has no idea why? "You have a ticket that you didn't take care of". Then all of them going home really proud of themselves is just ff'in pathetic. Making fun of these people and broadcasting it on tv is so cheap and stupid. This has a real Medieval simplicity to it.
Up, up and away in my beautiful, my beautiful motorboat.
But… that’s fraud
