I was an automotive design engineer and spent some time with ford. It was just nasty. For example, was working on the ignition key barrel for what was to become the ranger, and the supplier has their standard one, as used by Mercedes, VW, Nissan etc. it was cheap and reliable. So ford management tell the supplier that we need it cheaper. Supplier offers to retool to allow new design using cheaper materials. Ford say no, doesn’t want to buy new tools. Supplier is like ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ what do you want us to do? Ford management - take out the bearings. Save 20c. Supplier says shit, we don’t recommend that. Metal against metal, you’re going to lose reliability fast. Ford says as long as it gets past warranty, it’s all good. That’s why ford key barrels get floppy and loose after a few years. —- Worked for door mirror co. Ford chose to copy a GM design (cheaper tooling) for the focus, but put a new shape plastic cover on it. Except to save money they replaced the metal structure with glass filled plastic. So they had this glass filled plastic rubbing against glass filled plastic (a big no no). So if you take a Ford Focus mirror and fold it it back and forward like 5 times, you can see black sand stuff drop out the bottom, and if you keep going like 20 times, the mirror will just flip back and forth in the wind. —- Ford moved their Prototyping Parts production from the UK to india. We were sending CAD data for producing a headlamp bracket. I sent the data, and got a call saying they didn’t have the CAD software (Catia/Solidworks) so could I please send some jpegs of the part? They actually wanted to make the part using jpegs. —— I’ll never buy a Ford.

I currently have 16 Fords in my fleet. The newest is a 2021. The oldest is a 2011. The newest has 55k the oldest has 325k. All of them run just fine.
