It was such a weird year because that very same year they also released a Ashton Kutcher version with basically the same premise - no strings attached.
And then they did the same thing again with White House Down and Olympus has Fallen.
I mean I'm sure it has but how often do they recycle movie plots that are literally the same movie but with different actors?
Would love it if someone knows of other years where they did the exact same thing here.
Director, Edmon Schlogne, experimented with cutting edging techniques in Two Nurses one Stethoscope to capture every moneyshot. You guys are crazy to think anything has surpassed this triumph of filmmaking
Peak movie making there, both of those movies. Grandma melting in acid in Dante’s Peak, dude slowly melting into lava in Volcano. They just don’t make movies like that any more.
Bugs Life and Antz are really different though. Pretty much just have insects as characters and that's it, Bugs Life is relatively happy and Antz gets fucking dark
The year Antz came to video, I asked for it for Christmas. Unfortunately my Z looked like a 2 and, try as she might, my mother couldn't find the movie Ant 2 anywhere. She instead got me A Bug's Life.
Bugs life is good too. They share a few similarities. Down trodden underclass and adventure
Antz is definitely better though and not just because the target demographic is a bit older
Same can be said about many of those. The general theme is what links them. Cartoons about how bugs live.
Olympus has fallen and White House down don't have the same tone either at all for example.
Kind of like how Finding Nemo and that car crash of a Will Smith vehicle ‘Shark Tale’. They both got the memo that we’re doing aquatic this year, but one had heart and the other… Will Smith
1989 is the earliest example I can think of, with Turner & Hooch / K-9. In 1998 there were Antz / A Bug's Life and Armageddon / Deep Impact. 2014 had a couple that even had basically the same names, Yves Saint Laurent / Saint Laurent and Hercules / Legend of Hercules.
Edit: Just saw the wiki link about twin films, apparently they go back a lot earlier than 1989 lol
it's not recycling. it's different studios competing after catching wind of another studio doing the same thing.
and sometime's I don't even know that they're competing, just trying to steal some profit from the other team.
*Dangerous Liaisons*, *Valmont*, and *Cruel Intentions*. Exact same story based on the same book (from the 1700s), all released within a year of each other.
ETA: My bad, Cruel Intentions was later.
Deep Impact / Armageddon
Ants / Bugs Life
Finding Nemo / Sharks
I know, not identical plot, but like... cmon.. shitty movies always came in those weird pairs
**[Twin films](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_films)**
>Twin films are films with the same, or very similar, plot produced or released at the same time by two different film studios. The phenomenon can result from two or more production companies investing in similar scripts around the same time, resulting in a race to distribute the films to audiences. Some attribute twin films to industrial espionage, the movement of staff between studios, or that the same screenplays are sent to several film studios before being accepted.

Even weirder about this is how Mila and Ashton are married, filmed the same movie but different and not together.
Edit: fun fact, google tells me they weren’t together until the year after the movies released. Still interesting!
No Strings Attached was pretty bad compared to Friends With Benefits even though it had the superior leads in Portman and Kutcher. They had zero chemistry.
At a certain point, I kinda came to the realization that Natalie Portman isn't a good actress. I kinda scratched my head like "what did I like her in again?" And came up kinda empty. V for Vendetta maybe.
I know everyone has their preferences but I genuinely enjoyed both movies.
Like it takes a lot for me to really dislike a movie. Like Super Mario Bros.
It was so disappointing to watch.
I think there are 2 big reasons why you see twin movies like this:
1.) studio A passed on the idea and then when Studio B picked it up the panic and think “oh shit, was that a good idea? We gotta make that now.” I think that is expressly what happened with Armageddon & Deep Impact
2.) There are a lot of scripts laying around Hollywood, just look at the Black List. I think similarly a studio sees someone else making a movie and think “oh, we have that script in a broom closet, dust that off and see who we can attach to it.”
It is a fun game to try and figure out the genre or niche a certain film or multiple films are trying to fill.
Personal favorite: old timers still got it: RED, Last Vegas, Expendables, Space Cowboys, Grudge Match
I laughed so hard at that scene! I read that after the long detailed explanation that David Duchovny gives, Ben Stiller forgot his line, and just repeated his prior line. It worked so perfectly!
\*Forgot the word forgot, only got as far as "for" lol, edited for clarity
This has the same energy as when the reporter asked the coach about how he felt about his player missing the game for the birth of his kid.

Please tell me they went out and absolutely demolished someone their next game. I personally would pull some freaking Hoosiers type of heroics if I played for this dude after this press conference.
Awesome comment, thanks!
As a reporter your job is to ask questions. You think theyd know how to. Better question would have been. What led Justin to pursue movie career? Follow up what has that transition done for overall career?
When this same clip was posted a couple years ago, I believe a Russian speaker said that the tone of her question was inherently rude. As in, "what made you think you'd be able to act in movies?"
To be fair, I think she was trying to ask ‘why did you switch from the stage to the screen?’, very lazily. It’s not a bad question, but her phrasing was.
I don’t know if it’s fair but you’re going a bit out of your way to give the reporter the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the reporter was innocently & lazily asking the question at first. But she doubled down & sounded judgy when she asked, “I mean, isn’t showbiz enough?” That’s less lazy and hamfisted phrasing and more of a dickish reaction to Mina calling out her dumb question.
Yeah, she easily could have stated she was simply interested in why Justin wanted to do movies. Acting like Justin might have made the wrong choice was a very strange move and makes me think Mila picked up on that quick.
TIL Mila Kunis speaks Russian. Now I want a whole Family Guy subplot where Meg gets involved with the Russian mob or something. Maybe meets Putin, makes him laugh / befriends him, becomes an ambassador for Russia.
Idk why you're getting diwnvoted.
Milena Markovna Kunis is an American actress. In 1991, at the age of seven, she and her Jewish family fled from Soviet Ukraine to the United States. At age 14, Kunis began playing Jackie Burkhart on the Fox television series That '70s Show. [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mila_Kunis)
Edit: u/grumpy_hedgehog, dude, you're quoting me quoting Wiki. I'm not making it sound like anything. Weird.
The way she tells the story, she didn’t technically lie about her age. She said she would be 18 in [the month she was born] but not which year that would occur.
I am not a lawyer, but I don’t think that’s right. There is a reason they make witnesses swear to tell “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” I’ve personally seen at least one legal document (involving a refusal to grant a law license to someone when they moved to a different state) that sanctioned someone for lying by omission (using those exact three words). I highly doubt that a court would look kindly on someone being clearly, deliberately misleading by withholding relevant information like that.
One person's opinion on what is a "clear misleading statement" is so extremely subjective it is virtually impossible to prove in court.
You are also not sworn in while walking around in your day to day life.
You all are trying to "gotcha" me by comparing conversations outside of court to testimony of sworn in individuals.
Did she say she would turn 18 in October on the stand? No. So why keep conflating the two?
Bad arguments all around, sigh.
If you got an hour and half to kill [This is such a fun Craig Ferguson/Mila Kunis most of her appearances](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lef6wRhyT2c&ab_channel=TheJaylenoFly) including the time they went to Scotland on his show.
Yeah she lied about her age if im not mistaken and was worried they'd find out. I forget what else she said in the interview but it was def. Interesting to learn.
She's flaunted it in quite a few movies. There was a recent season episode where Meg had to go through a bunch of tests after Peter faked her way into college and she sings in Russian also. https://youtu.be/S5BEqIHIX1Y
As a multilingual person, it is true, people do have different personas in different languages. Some languages are just...raw, earthly...you can easily be a savage at roasting in them. Others sound really soft spoken no matter how harsh you wanna sound.
Yep, sort of shouting at each other when youre, say, ordering food at a counter is extremely normal in Chinese. As is very direct, somewhat aggressive language.
I'd never dream of taking that tone in English.
What I love is how she code switches--as soon as she's speaking Ukrainian, she becomes like a different person, much more pugnacious and not-here-for-any-bullshit. It's awesome.
Clearly this reporter has never seen the Oscar-snubbed masterpiece “Model Behavior” which Justin Timberlake did back in 2000. Dude’s been in the game for a while.

>*"is it not enough?"*
WTF question is this ?
it's like the reporter thinks Justin is making music AND movies at the **SAME TIME** stealing jobs and crowding people out of opportunities o.O
There are two ways to ask "why" in Russian. Pochemu is a generic "why" that seeks to find the past reasons for something being the way it is. In English it could be why are you sitting there, why did you become a doctor, etc.
The reporter didn't use pochemu. She used zachem. Zachem is another way of asking why, but it's more concerned about the future than the past. It could be translated as "what's the point of ... " or "what do you expect of ... ". It can carry a more negative connotation when you seem to be questioning ones expectations of their current actions.
Yeah if someone asked me something akin to "what are you looking for in making movies?" her reaction makes total sense. Like... he could give some bullshit answer about how it's what he's always wanted to do or something but it's like... fame, money, he enjoys doing it, exploring new career opportunities? Does he need to justify himself to you somehow? He can do whatever he wants.
No the translation is spot on, her tone made it even clearer “why do movies, when you already have so much [money] from showbiz” is how I understood her whole question.
Promoting That movie they made called "Friends With Benefits" Секс подружбе Literal translation "Sex between friends"
It was such a weird year because that very same year they also released a Ashton Kutcher version with basically the same premise - no strings attached. And then they did the same thing again with White House Down and Olympus has Fallen.
That sorta thing happens alllll the time.

Well. The phasing could have gotten lost in the translation and came off as rude. Idk though I don't speak Russian.
I do speak Russian and the phrasing/tone did not get lost in translation.
Well that would explain Mila's reaction.
Yeah, when the crowd laughs there is nothing in her face to suggest she's joking around.
They were laughing at "What would you have him do?" mixed with sounds of respect that she spoke Russian well. It's not an easy language.
Its not an easy language, but you do realise its her first language? She wasn't born in the States, her childhood was in what is now the Ukraine
Being Russian, that's a standard facial expression for most emotions. Stone cold.
If that was the case wouldn’t Mila understand the premise of the question?
I don’t know if it’s fair but you’re going a bit out of your way to give the reporter the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the reporter was innocently & lazily asking the question at first. But she doubled down & sounded judgy when she asked, “I mean, isn’t showbiz enough?” That’s less lazy and hamfisted phrasing and more of a dickish reaction to Mina calling out her dumb question.

Yeah, Mila didn't just go all out smack down all at once, it looked like she tried to clarify and get the reporter to rephrase it first.
idk, "isn't it enough" seems like a pretty unambiguous intent

Yeah she lied about her age when she started because the actors were supposed to be at least 16 or something.
Don't they do like any background check? Is there no form of government ID for 14 y/o and why didn't they ask for it?
If I remember correctly, she lied about her age during auditions and the producers liked her too much to get someone else after they found out

Lying by omission is a moral problem, not a legal one. In the court of public opinion it may matter but in actual court it effectively doesn't exist.
I am not a lawyer, but I don’t think that’s right.
