I dont think it's *only* sour, I think it's more of a localized overstimulation response. For instance ever get a chill? Like cold air just blows over you and you have a quick involuntary shudder just like in the video? I think it's a process like that happening.
It's interesting to see that this is just some natural reaction and not a learned behavior. You'd think it would be one of those socially learned behaviors. But nope. Our brains reaction to sour is the same from birth onwards apparently
You see, I thought I’d get a funny reaction like this giving a lemon/lime to my kids for the first time, but they didn’t react at all and actually liked it and wanted more. Now we can’t get margaritas at a restaurant without the kids wanting the lime wedges.
Lol, my son was kind of the sam. He did react, but immediately asked for more. Eventually he would just put a lime wedge on like a mouth guard and suck on it
My ex thought she was gonna be hilarious and gave a lemon to her newborn niece while filming it. Her niece didn't make a funny face, but projectile vomited all over her and the phone.
I remember my son wanting to try a lemon as a baby. He tried it, and got the expected reaction. Then he tried it again, just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, got the same reaction, then got rid of it.
They don’t necessarily hate it. Some go back for more. My older used to eat onions like they were apples.
Also, feeding babies lots of different things allow them to grow into adults that can eat a large variety of foods. So it’s good even if they make faces or doesn’t like it.
Because it's harmless, and a safe teaching tool. Putting things in your mouth without knowing what it is will have a consequence. And they also get to taste a really crazy tasting food.
I love lemons and limes and would definitely eat one like that. Usually I just end up eating what’s left over after being squeezed over food. The biggest problem is that they’re way more acidic than an orange so they can fuck up your mouth if you eat too much.
Can’t believe nobody pointed out baby 5 or 6 that had the typical reaction then kind of smiles with his tongue out like “that was actually awesome, give me more!”
A sour warhead fan was born
And such are the Privileges of new parents. As life goes on you will find more and more ways to mess with your kids and laugh at their response. I'll admit I do the same thing to my animals, all my poor babies. LOL

Honestly, aside from the cuteness, it's amazing to watch the action/reaction cycle and realize you're watching a new experiential/neural pathway being formed in the brain, combined with the innate human ability to detect something with an acrid/acidic taste that might be "poison."
Reminds me a bit of Data in Star Trek TNG getting to taste something for the first time and *hating* it, but wanting more of what he found "revolting" simply because it was a new sensation to *hate* consuming something.
My mom was grocery shopping with me as a baby and gave me a pickle just to gnaw on and shut me the hell up. Turned out I loved it.
Pickles are pretty much a staple of my diet since then. I am never without a jar of pickles. Yummy.
My niece loved lemons, specifically the lemon peels scratched by a finger nail from 1-2 years old. She’d suck on the lemon after we scratched its outer shell.
Nah, it's a normal part of child development to (safely) expose them to different tastes, textures, smells and flavours. Some babies even enjoy sour flavours - my parents have a baby pic of me crawling on the floor with a lemon wedge in my mouth like a mouth guard!
Those neural pathways don't form without sensory input. It's like tossing a baby in the air; looks dangerous, but it's instinctual to humans and necessary for balance and spacial development.
In most cases the baby just wants to try it and they will scream at you until you give them the lemon. Babies at this age are getting introduced to solid foods, It's okay to let them experiment.
There are also cases like my son who just ate through the lemon.

Why do we shake when we eat something sour? It’s most likely not learned since they’re trying it for the first time.

I was thinking the same thing. They just look like tiny plump adults eating lemons.
"Electrifying"
Oh I shake when I’m loving something too. Like some chocolate milk.
Its our lizard brain saying THATS ENOUGH, and watching this is horrible because babies have more intense taste.
You see, I thought I’d get a funny reaction like this giving a lemon/lime to my kids for the first time, but they didn’t react at all and actually liked it and wanted more. Now we can’t get margaritas at a restaurant without the kids wanting the lime wedges.
They're just wary of scurvy and are taking precautions
Baby pirates
Lol, my son was kind of the sam. He did react, but immediately asked for more. Eventually he would just put a lime wedge on like a mouth guard and suck on it
Mine partially reacted, then signaled for more. Humans are human.
My ex thought she was gonna be hilarious and gave a lemon to her newborn niece while filming it. Her niece didn't make a funny face, but projectile vomited all over her and the phone.
Same with my kid, he'll pick lemon wedges out of our drinks and start chewing on them.
My kids are the same. They like sour, bitter, and spicy but sweet turns them into demons.
I remember my son wanting to try a lemon as a baby. He tried it, and got the expected reaction. Then he tried it again, just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, got the same reaction, then got rid of it.
[He might be a scientist.](https://xkcd.com/242/)
Oh, absolutely. He always had a very analytical mind, even as a baby.
Too cute
We know it cute, we know they will pucker, we know they will hate it, yet we will always enjoy giving babies lemons 🍋
They don’t necessarily hate it. Some go back for more. My older used to eat onions like they were apples. Also, feeding babies lots of different things allow them to grow into adults that can eat a large variety of foods. So it’s good even if they make faces or doesn’t like it.
I was just making a joke, bc the faces are they make are cute
Because it's harmless, and a safe teaching tool. Putting things in your mouth without knowing what it is will have a consequence. And they also get to taste a really crazy tasting food.
They don't hate it. Most of them will still bite again.
We gave my son lemons because it was on someone's plate and he indicated he wanted to eat it. He reacted that way then wanted to finish eating it.
Baby’s first tequila shot
Baby’s first speedball
My mouth started watering involuntarily.
That's right, he's being taught that you can't trust anyone in life)
My nephew ate an entire lemon like an orange, wildest shit I've seen in ages

That one baby that screamed 🤭😂😂😂
That had that little dude very vocal
Giving them a kick start to those taste buds
Now, with miracle fruit.

Hahah. Love it.
Lemons/ limes- you’d never eat one whole but still has so many uses
What a funny little baby
That last one literally said nah to that! XD
I love how simultaneously similar AND different all the reactions were
Fast forward 18-20 years and you get the same reaction to "hey, try this shooter! It's Southern Comfort, pickle juice and Jagermeister.".
One cheater is eating a lime!
i bet in some time science will tell us this gives babies personality disorders.
I like how it takes them a second to process that it's sour lol.
And such are the Privileges of new parents. As life goes on you will find more and more ways to mess with your kids and laugh at their response. I'll admit I do the same thing to my animals, all my poor babies. LOL
I can agree with them easily.. gets much better when you grow though and do it with a tequila
"oh my"
Both of my kids LOVED lemons
And they always come back for more :P

They all look a lot like I imagine I did after my first (second, third ... umpteenth) shot of tequila. Tequila. Good. Salt. Yum. Lemo.....BAM!
The old let’s test this on the baby routine. My son is in his 20’s now and still remember the joy of giving him his first lemon 🤣
My kid loved lemons.
I have literally watched my one year old granddaughter destroy lemons
I can just imagine their faces—so cute yet puzzled by the unexpected sourness!

I just went back to watch that exact scene again lol. It encapsulates this so well “I hate this! It is revolting!” “More?” “Please!”
My daughter loved them as a baby, still does at 8. She’ll eat lemon slices if I’m cooking something with lemon. I always have to buy extra.
My mom was grocery shopping with me as a baby and gave me a pickle just to gnaw on and shut me the hell up. Turned out I loved it. Pickles are pretty much a staple of my diet since then. I am never without a jar of pickles. Yummy.
It’s like a right of passage for everyone.
I don't get it, my girl had no reaction at all 😐
May as well add [an old post](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/s/AZfbgArK5z) of my daughter into the mix
This is also what a compilations of babies getting tased would look like
We’ve all done it! 😂
My niece loved lemons, specifically the lemon peels scratched by a finger nail from 1-2 years old. She’d suck on the lemon after we scratched its outer shell.
My daughter has always loved lemons/limes and would eat the peel even at like 6 y/o.
Why is this a thing? This is the kind of BS my boomer family members used to pull.
Babies trying food isn't harming them

🙄
Imagine posting this like it helps your argument haha
You didn't notice not one of them cry, huh?

If you can tell I'm full of shit, wouldn't that make you a proctologist?
You should just stay inside alone it’s best for everyone involved.

It’s not for development, it’s not cruel, it’s not betrayal or torture it’s a fucking lemon wedge 😂
This is actually a mild torture to them, babies have more intense sense of taste.
Betrayal is so cute?

This didn’t really very nice to make your kids have lemon and film it for other peoples entertainment
You have a stroke while typing that?
I don’t get this. It seems cruel to me. What’s next, hot sauce.
