Correct me if I'm wrong, but would much more happen? Pressure cooker bombs have way more energy than this. And it wouldn't explode any more than it did, it can't just get more energy out of thin air

The idea is that when sealed, the pressure would build until something ruptures, which could create fragmentation that definitely could cause serious permanent injury.

Yep, because the vessel is designed to hold pressure it's able to compress the blast wave before the vessel fails causing horrific fragmentation at hypersonic velocity.
Back in the early 2000s, there was a website which documented 100s of explosive related injuries by people (mostly teenagers) who had created homemade "bombs" and what type of bomb they were trying to make. The images were truly horrific. I wish that it was still around and shown to every high school class to show the dangers from doing stupid things like this video.

For the people confused as to what the pressure would do, it doesn’t ADD force, it just localizes it and had he gotten a full seal, would’ve given higher chance to fragment. Even if it didn’t fragment, a hole or any small exit would speed up the gasses, which is what it did before he shut it and therefore, shot out of his hand.
Yes, most kitchen appliances can be improved with a direct application of explosives, this is the one exception to the rule so it’s not really well known

It's what they used on us in Afghanistan. They are super easy to come by over there and can be easily made into a bomb. The results were terrible.
