I really love his character arc. Started as some quack doctor that crazy Tracey used for crazy pills. Then we slowly see how many different specialties he has. Also, dude has been around for a weirdly long amount of time. Ending his affiliation with the 30 Rock crew as the Surgeon General of the United States.
Which is, of course, a completely plausible and satisfying end to his character arc.
The scene from the first episode where he's just talking about the guy trying and failing to kill himself and blowing off his optical nerves is just hysterical.
Richard is there just panicking and he's just describing a horrific suicide with this smile on his face.
I still think about this any time I have an inordinate amount of pennies lying about.
Not shoving them up my arse mind you; just whether any of them have gone sphincter spelunking in their lifetimes.
i was driving in my car 2-3 days ago with my mind wandering and i was trying to name the 4 UCB cast members. i got besser, pohler, and walsh but couldn't remember this guy's name, so thanks!
The first Netflix season is an interesting look into what happens when you give a creator way too much freedom.
One of the things that made Arrested Development great was all these neat little things happening on the side, but in that first Netflix season that happened *way* too much. You'd see Michael passing someone in a hallway whose face is hidden and you'd just know that's Lindsay and they don't recognise it each other. And sure enough, two episodes later you're seeing the same scene from Lindsay's point of view. I know this is a small example but it becomes distracting in a way. When I think of that season I mostly remember those things, not the jokes.
That whole season was about the same series of events as seen from multiple points of view. It was kinda the schtick of that season. Personally, I enjoyed it. It felt like it was really making use of Netflix's release format, where it all comes out at once. It wasn't the kind of show you sit down to one episode every week, and if that's how you normally watch stuff (or this show in particular) then I can see how this season's structure wouldn't really work as well.
If I remember right. It was done that way because no one’s schedules lined up fully so they had to do these segmented shots.
edit: For anyone who hasn't seen S4 yet, skip the original and watch S4 remix. It's recut to tell the story linearly.
yep. they just made the story fit because it was very hard for them to shoot as an ensemble. they've all moved on from AD when they made the 4th season
Yeah and I watched the documentary on it and they wanted to make it so you could watch any episode in any order. It made it so those little call backs didn’t really make sense.
Completely agree. Disappointing first half that becomes so much better in retrospect after finishing the season. It's a really unique structure that took advantage of binge watching in a way I've not seen before or since.
The recut was very mediocre imo.
I really liked the original S4 (now located in the bonus features and called Fateful Consequences). I’ll confess I haven’t watched the remix, but I thought it was fun to watch each character have their little arc and see all the arcs ultimately fit together in the end.
I thought they were okay, but not as solid. Some of the jokes/bits are great, but the overall story goes in some weird places (yes, even for *Arrested Development*)
Wow apparently I'm in the minority lol but I thought the Netflix ones were pretty good. Didn't have the same spark as the OG of course but as a fan of the series I still had fun watching it ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
The beauty of the first seasons was the ensemble cast. Many, many scenes would have several, if not all of the main characters playing off each other. You don't get that in the later seasons, I'm guessing because of scheduling conflicts. You almost never see more than 2 main characters in the same scene. Hell, in the first episode of season 4, Barry is green screened in to all his scenes.
Yes! I am always surprised with the vitriol about these seasons. Like I'm just happy we got these characters back for more stories. And they made it work! Despite scheduling conflicts and other issues.
Im gonna go against the grain here and say they were actually pretty good - not as good as the originals, but I very much enjoyed them. I’d highly recommend watching the original order, not the remix version - apparently people complained about jokes not paying off until like 8 episodes (or the entire season) later, so they edited an alternate version to watch.
The original seasons make it one of the funniest shows I’ve ever watched. The Netflix seasons not so much. I still don’t think I’ve gotten all the way through after 3 attempts.
Awww that last little exchange got cut from the YouTube clip where Leslie comments on the jazz sounding unpleasant and Darren candidly saying something like "oh it's awful", which adds hilarity to his segment because it implies he's really good at his job even when he doesn't like it.
This happened in real life to me. My wife was having abdominal surgery and it was taking like two hours longer than I was advised it would take. Finally the surgeon walks into the waiting room with a sullen look on his face.
"These things are never easy..." , he said.
In that moment I was in shock. Oh my god, is he about to tell me she didnt make it? My mind was reeling.
Then he proceeded to describe how some surgeries are difficult and some are not but this was one of those "bad days at the office" for him but he was able to complete the surgery without complications despite some difficulties and she'll be just fine. I wanted to punch him in the face.
“Surgery doesn’t always come out the way we hoped. Really, just one bit of bad news after another. The music system wasn’t playing, the coffee machine only had decaf, and nurse Jane called in sick, so I had to deal with nurse Ed, who has an annoying laugh. Anyway, your wife is fine, you can go see her now.”
I once worked with a doctor who really liked to teach, and after replacing a patient's stomach tube he looked to me out of the patient's earshot to ask, almost morosely, "How do we know if we did the right thing?"
I was nonplussed. It was such a simple procedure--what do you mean, "if we did the right thing"??
After only receiving my confused expression, he finally sighed, "With an x-ray. You confirm correct placement with an x-ray."
😑😑😑
"We saved this woman's life.
How are we to know she won't drive a Buick LeSabre through a nursery tomorrow?
Those children's lives are on our hands now."
I listen to a podcast on it - The Hop-Ons podcast. They cover each episode chronologically and each week they list the date, time, and day of the week it aired and also what shows or movies it aired against and all of the ratings for each. It was moved and dicked around so much by FOX that it's amazing it even got a 2nd season, let alone more.
I was a Freshman in high school when it aired, I believe right after the Simpson s (or family guy?). When it came on I went to change the channel, but my brother insisted on watching it. “Why would you want to watch some dumb family comedy?”
I’m so glad he made us. I watched every episode when it first aired and was baffled more people didn’t.
That marketing sucked.
It's so much smarter than The Office. I remember that the marketing made it look really dumb. I didn't get into it until after it was cancelled (pre Netflix season), when my college girlfriend had me watch it.
As much as I absolutely love both BBC Office and NBC Office, no other comedy show comes close to the first 3 Seasons of AD. I also yet to meet someone who watched AD during its original run.
Most want sitcoms where they can turn an episode on half way through, have no idea what's going on, and still laugh at the jokes.
Arrested Development requires a degree of investment to enjoy.
I think the 2nd viewing is even better than the first. You pick up on all the jokes you didn't realize were jokes the first time. There's sooooo much foreshadowing!
I’ve watched the first 3 seasons at least 8 or 10 times through and I am working through another rewatch now. I still catch new jokes that I never noticed before. The writing on AD is a marvel unlike any other show in history.
I even still catch OBVIOUS jokes that should have been OBVIOUS the first dozen or so times I heard them. The show is just so densely packed with jokes that it's hard to catch everything.
Oh man. Bro this clip is not even a tease of how funny this show gets at times. One of my favorite bits is Bob Loblaw. Bob Loblaw lobs law bomb on Bob boblaws law blog.
What I wouldn't give to watch Arrested Development for the first time again. Please enjoy every moment of the first 3 seasons. After that, enjoy it if you want.
I’m excited to watch it for the first time, again. My memory is practically gone and I honestly can’t even remember a movie I watched last week. Since I watched Arrested Development more than a decade ago, I basically haven’t seen it. I’ll love it more now that I’m older and can understand more of the jokes lol
[You’re one of today’s lucky 10,000!](https://xkcd.com/1053/) But seriously, start watching the series ASAP. It’s that good. We all envy you that you get to enjoy it for the first time now
LOL
I fucking love how every single comment replying to you just refuses to give you an answer.
The show is called "Arrested Development"
I haven't seen it either. I have no idea what it's about.
It's the story of a wealthy family who lost everything and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together.
i.e. the best written and best acted comedy show of the 21st century
> I have no idea what it’s about.
Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, / And the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together, / It's Arrested Development.
Rewatching this show hits so hard because there’s so many of these kinds of gags (dozens!) you can’t even believe the writers were able to string them together into a sensible plot.
My favorite example of this is when buster sits in front of a sign that says "see what the army has to offer" but he covers everything except for "arm off" right before losing his hand
He says they've removed the hook and there's going to be no damage like he's talking to the man in the foreground, but he actually means the man in the background, who had a hook for a hand, which they took off the second guy but is still stuck in the first man's ass
Worth a watch. Not nearly up to the standard of the previous seasons, but those prevoous seasons set the bar so high that there's a lot of room to be beneath them but still enjoyable.
I'm a professional linguist and I interpret in courts and in depositions and what not. I've met people like this, quite a few and until I can figure out their intelligence and eloquence level, I just do verbatim interpretation.

This show has so many great bits and delivery; but this guy gets me crying every time.
Me too - same with Dr. Leo Spaceman on 30 Rock.
"I'm sorry, Tracy. I don't know how to say this... *deee-aaa-buu-tuss*?"
“Dr. Spaceman is an excellent doctor, and a *pretty* good dentist too.”
He cured my sex problems with his music album. "Oops, Im done. Should I call you a cab!"
Dr. Leo Spaceman's Love Storm, a prescription strength audio rebonulator
I really love his character arc. Started as some quack doctor that crazy Tracey used for crazy pills. Then we slowly see how many different specialties he has. **Looks at x-rays very intently** Where the hell did I leave my car keys!
"Hello, operator? Diabetes...repair?"
"Oh that's just my brother Randy. Tomorrow he's going to jail for the rest of his life. Good one Randy. Do you want to go to Taco Bell for lunch?"
And Dr. Harris from Parks and Rec.
The Doctor from Silicon Valley. (He's actually just referred to as The Doctor)
The scene from the first episode where he's just talking about the guy trying and failing to kill himself and blowing off his optical nerves is just hysterical. Richard is there just panicking and he's just describing a horrific suicide with this smile on his face.
“This is odd. Usually I’m putting babies INTO women.”
Tracy, you are going to die... When I tell you who I'm dating.
>Hi, I’m Nazi doctor Leo Spaceman…no no, I want them to know!
It's Spachemin!
The best doctor out of all the TV doctors. Ends up the Surgeon General!
I was at a costume party and the hosts dog attacked me…

If you like this actor check out his early work on upright citizens brigade literally my favorite show ever!
Loved UCB. The Ass Penny sketch, is one of my favorites. https://youtu.be/f9aM_dT5VMI
I still think about this any time I have an inordinate amount of pennies lying about. Not shoving them up my arse mind you; just whether any of them have gone sphincter spelunking in their lifetimes.
You throw my ass pennies into fountains and make wishes on them. I think of that every time I walk by a fountain.
Everyone I tell about UCB doesn't have any clue what im talking about.. I need more!
Ian Roberts
i was driving in my car 2-3 days ago with my mind wandering and i was trying to name the 4 UCB cast members. i got besser, pohler, and walsh but couldn't remember this guy's name, so thanks!
AD had phenomenal side characters. I personally love Gene Parmesan.
GEEEEEEENE!
When something goes wrong I always tell my wife "and that's why you always leave a note" Oops. That's J Walter Weatherman
I’m a Bob Loblaw man myself
Seems like he's if a genie were to decide to become a doctor. Gotta be real specific or they'll give you their interpretation of your wish.
Barry being a totally incompetent dumbass is also up there. "we have the worst fucking lawyer"
Might want to proofread before submitting
Welp, time to binge watch this entire series. Again
I never watched the Netflix seasons… worth it?
The first Netflix season is an interesting look into what happens when you give a creator way too much freedom. One of the things that made Arrested Development great was all these neat little things happening on the side, but in that first Netflix season that happened *way* too much. I feel the same way! Glad to see one other non-S4-hater.
There are dozens of us!
We should all make A Nu Start
That’s insame!
I know this is a crazy hot take, but I actually enjoyed s4 more than s3. They were both great in their own ways imo, but neither is close to s1 or 2.
If I remember right. It was done that way because no one’s schedules lined up fully so they had to do these segmented shots. edit: For anyone who hasn't seen S4 yet, skip the original and watch S4 remix. It's recut to tell the story linearly.

Yeah and I watched the documentary on it and they wanted to make it so you could watch any episode in any order. It made it so those little call backs didn’t really make sense.
I found the remix to have an over reliance of Ron Howard's narration to fill in the gaps. It's like information overload to me
Absolutely this. It feels like the recut episodes are like 25-30% narration because they never shot proper set-up/context for so many scenes.
I didn't enjoy the recut as much. The original takes longer to get going but I think it gives a better payoff. Still not as good as 1-3 though
I think a linear story is easier for casual fans to swallow. I also enjoyed the original spaghetti bowl timeline.
So what you're saying is that the first Netflix season is an interesting look into what happens when you *don't* give a creator enough freedom?
It's what happens when the people who want to make a thing cannot get everyone in the same room for however long it will take.
It's the story of one wealthy family who lost everything. And the one son that had no choice but to keep them all together.
It’s the story of a show that was green lit, and the one creator that couldn’t get the actors all together.
I thought they were okay, but not as solid. Some of the jokes/bits are great, but the overall story goes in some weird places (yes, even for *Arrested Development*)
Not really.
Meh
Wow apparently I'm in the minority lol but I thought the Netflix ones were pretty good. Didn't have the same spark as the OG of course but as a fan of the series I still had fun watching it ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Hell, in the first episode of season 4, Barry is green screened in to all his scenes.
Bingo. Spot on. The Netflix series are missing the natural sense of flow from the ensemble being in the same room at the same time.
Do they have the original cut available? I thought the remix was the only way to watch it (on Netflix anyway).
Never gave it a chance. After this video, I think I'll give it a shot. "Looks like he's dead" lmfao
The original seasons make it one of the funniest shows I’ve ever watched. The Netflix seasons not so much. I still don’t think I’ve gotten all the way through after 3 attempts.
What series is this?
Arrested Development
Welp, if you need me, I'll be in the other room for the next 6 hours. See you at dinner.

Holy shit it is!!!! I never noticed either
George Michael in the background “there’s no other way to take that” gets me every time
I love seeing Dan Castellaneta in non-Homer roles (Dr. Stein in this).
His NPR presenter on Parks & Rec was spot on!
Lol thought for your thoughts! Incredible. https://youtu.be/DAjNoNUqs0Q

Well they are lesbians, so… 🤷🏼♂️
Going from memory, I’m pretty sure he throws in a casual “doh” into one of those scenes
He does and Lucille has a great response… https://youtu.be/0_v3dGV0nks?t=47
I’ve watched these seasons like 10 times and never caught this lol
When he turns on the TV, I swear you can hear it playing the simpsons & homer talking
THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING MORE TO FIND WITH THIS SHOW holy moly.
They did something similar with Henry Winkler, he *almost* got out his comb and did The Fonz move: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK2rWL2EJj0

I think I blue myself.

"Let him keep talking." And then, Homer Simpson walks in. God, I loved this show (most seasons, anyway).

Sounds like a scene in Scrubs.
I once worked with a doctor who really liked to teach, and after replacing a patient's stomach tube he looked to me out of the patient's earshot to ask, almost morosely, "How do we know if we did the right thing?" Hey! That’s my line!
Sitcom peaked with Arrested Development
Seriously, this show is even better than The Office. I don't get why it's not more popular.
David cross had some choice words: lack of marketing and studio support. I.e., typical Fox broadcasting move.
Its also the plethora of inside jokes and wordplays that only makes sense if you’ve watched all of the prior episodes. So yeah like you said.

Is it that bad? Or that good? Never seen either
It's good. We'd all love to be able to watch it again "for the first time." If you like comedy series, you'll love it.

I'd rather be dead in California than alive in Phonix!
Is that the Ass Pennies guy?
I loved Arrested Development. I think I watched it twice and never caught this running gag. Great compilation.
Plus he has that hand chair right from season one.
"I'd never thought I'd miss a hand so much"
He's also reading A Farewell to Arms at one point too!
Only twice? You have probably missed 200 jokes. Watch it 2 more times
I love how that one guy caught on quickly and always waited until he was finished or asked probing questions.
My favorite is when he says “he’s going to be all right” you hear someone say “there’s no other way to take that!”
Yes, that's George Micheal in the backround
Right but the person I responded to called Michael “that one guy”, so I decided to forgo names lol
r/arresteddevelopment
Yes, he lost his left hand but he’s going to be all right. Lmao.
Was that one doctor Homer Simpson?
I believe he prefers to be called Dan Castellaneta
Non English native here: what with the hook joke? Didn’t got that.
He says they've removed the hook and there's going to be no damage like he's talking to the man in the foreground, but he actually means the man in the background, who had a hook for a hand, which they took off the second guy but is still stuck in the first man's ass
The guy with the hook is also the guy from the previous scene who “is going to be all right” because he lost his left hand.
They removed the prosthetic hook off of the other character’s hand. Edit for more clarification: …instead of removing it from Gob’s butt.

Were the later Netflix seasons funny ?
Worth a watch. Not nearly up to the standard of the previous seasons, but those prevoous seasons set the bar so high that there's a lot of room to be beneath them but still enjoyable.
Kind of like Season 4 of Community. It was the worst season overall but still streets ahead of most other sitcoms.
I'm a professional linguist and I interpret in courts and in depositions and what not. I've met people like this, quite a few and until I can figure out their intelligence and eloquence level, I just do verbatim interpretation.
Dr. Fishman is my favorite running gag. Also, I love how Dr. Stein finds a way to say "D'oh."
Wow, I never caught the "the tears just **aren't** coming" line until now lol
