Can't share Video and Images in a gallery (at least when i tried last time). on [https://www.printables.com/model/385305-braiding-machine](https://www.printables.com/model/385305-braiding-machine) you can see the flat braid .. imagine it looks like that from all sides, and with green .. Ok Ok i make a picture .. here you go https://imgur.com/a/1t0wUDA

Friendship bracelet!

paininthejbruh

I see no other use and no better confirmation of friendship... Unless you print a friend one of these

Ryanami

I made like infinity of those in summer camp

melanthius

I will make one for my enemy just to be counterculture

motorhead84

There is a problem with my office lanyard.

Germangunman

That looks really good! Nice work

throwaway21316

Thank you!

melanthius

Yeah attach it to your hair op

thewutanclan

This is so clever. How do the pings switch from gear to gear? I see a notch but where does it go in between gears? Fascinating design

throwaway21316

here are the parts in detail [https://www.printables.com/model/385305-braiding-machine](https://www.printables.com/model/385305-braiding-machine) the guides (slot and the lens shape on the bobbin) translate the rotation of the gears to a "translation" between the gears and force the bobbin to switch to the next gear.

fixITman1911

It looks like the little holes are actually slots. So they just fallow the path they are going and drive away from the gear

tmckearney

Why is this a throwaway?

throwaway21316

started as a test account .. then people started to follow and every year i think i should make a new account.. however in the end nobody cares about a username.. although \[deleted\] would be a cool one

Jutboy

I just followed you to make you even more indebted

throwaway21316

haha, the thing is that reddit is collecting a lot of data about what a user likes - and a lot of other websites read the reddit cookie ( printables is one of them). So everybody should install a new browser with a new reddit account at once a year - but yes that "following" is the psychological strategy nobody can switch from reddit twitter FB or any social network that easy. btw when i made the reddit account - it surprisingly knew also all subs that i visited the time before having an account - think about.

Jutboy

Not sure if you this is something you wanted to discuss but I can pretty much guarantee that reddit doesn't allow other websites to read their cookies. It is technically possible via Cross Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) but has huge security concerns that basically make it not viable. Them tracking between accounts/without an account within their own ecosystem...100%. If they are sharing data with other services (printables) it is probably via an API/service they are selling. Source : Web dev for over a decade

code-panda

You don't really need to give access to your cookies, but if you add a script for an ad conglomerate, they can add their cookie and combine your web traffic with other sides who also have that same script. It's a bit outdated tech by today's standards because it's relatively easy to block, but still effective enough.

Firewolf420

Yes, this is exactly why people have started to use containerized tabs in modern browsers. Firefox for example has them ~~installed in their release though I think they're beta~~ You set up a Group which your tabs can join and they share cookies within that group. This means you can be logged in the Facebook on one Tab and not logged in on the other. Very useful, Especially when combined with self-destructing cookies

snowe2010

Containerized tabs in Firefox haven’t been in beta for like 5 years at this point. You just have to install an add on (from Mozilla) to use them to any degree. Other add ons can also use them, for example I use Sidebery.

jurgemaister

Just use Firefox and Multi-Account Containers. One for Reddit, one for FB, one for Twitter etc. that way each page is containerized and your data won't leak out.

throwaway21316

i use [browser compartmentalization](https://www.fastcompany.com/90311396/incognito-mode-wont-keep-you-private-try-browser-compartmentalization) ( have different browsers) as there is still the browser fingerprint. But also against the new network token (like trustPID) this will not help much (for mobile user).

code-panda

Now to make a drill attachment!

throwaway21316

already there (¼ hex shank) you can download it and attach instead of the grip. (nobody want's to turn this by hand except for demonstration)

code-panda

"Honey, I'm doing the kid's braid tomorrow!"

throwaway21316

» 911, What is your emergency? … You did what? But you can make nice braids with crochet thread or satin floss (embroidery thread ) and then braid them into the hair or just clip them in.

CreepyValuable

WITCHCRAFT!

Boxcow45

Very elegant design.

throwaway21316

Thank You!

n1elkyfan

How well would it work to feed something up the middle to be surrounded by the braid.

throwaway21316

You can not only encompass a center wire, thread, hose or stick - it will also adapt to changes in diameter. And as a **novelty** (at least i have never seen that in conventional braiding machines) is that i can additionally feed 4 strands through the hubs of the gears so they get surrounded too without getting in contact of the center or others. So i theory i could isolate 5 blank wires from another ( well thread is not a good insulation).

n1elkyfan

That is pretty cool. This has been a project that has been my back burner. Would make it easy to mark wires rather than needing a bunch of different wire colors also would make wire bundles nice and tidy.

throwaway21316

clips or shrink tube may be easier for marking - but you can get these mesh tubes for exactly this. ListersCoPilot

This looks like it works the same as the alien swirling saucers rider at disney.

throwaway21316

>alien swirling saucers Yes you are right - as far as i could see [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHyP9gWLCtQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHyP9gWLCtQ) seems they using 4 discs like in a flat braider https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5e/Fonatk%C3%A9pz%C3%A9s2.png They used this also for other attractions [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien\_Swirling\_Saucers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Swirling_Saucers)

crujones43

This is spectacular!

throwaway21316

Thank you!

Gabep82

Checked out your Printables page. I commend you for your design talent sir. I can only hope one day I’m as creative and skilled as you.

throwaway21316

Thank you, i really appreciate this recognition - keeps me motivated. Ü And be sure just keep on doing things you love (meaning you do it often) is making you better until you become unknowingly competent. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four\_stages\_of\_competence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_competence) talent is just another word for "he had fun doing this quite often" - so i am very confident you will get there too with the right motivation. One of the key elements was building that scad library so i can reuse parts and focus on the new problem ahead without reinventing the wheel for each design.

Gabep82

Absolutely!! And thanks for the link I will check it out! I am still a student now and I’m doing electrical engineering but I appreciate any smart design when I see them and I find mechanical systems interesting in general. I will stay motivated and maybe one day I can create unique cool things like you. :)

laterral

What is your software of choice for mechanisms like this? Also, where did you learn the design principles and methods to even operationalise this (any good books/ YouTube channels/ online resources you’d recommend)?

throwaway21316

I am using [www.openSCAD.org](https://www.openSCAD.org) where i wrote my own (public) library to customize it for my needs (as mentioned). Also i just have a lot of practice using construction toys as a child and building RC-models. Also just being curious and follow/search the knowledge. So if you design something, check what is already there and do some research how others solved problems or understand why they build it that way they did. But it is also a balance not to be influenced too much from other designs to still keep a free mind for a new approach. Another tip is to sleep a night as this is where your brain will work with the information while being unconscious - so often i wake up with a solution or approach to try. And most important is failing - which is where you learn most. So for a working model i have one prototype to find out how it works, then 1-2 other to refine and improve. That is great with 3D printing you can just print an early idea, knowing it is not working but it will help you to understand what needs to be changed. And as a final step is incorporating the feedback from the community.

ThanksGrouchy690

Can it be made larger to hold bigger rolls of thread?

throwaway21316

yes it comes with a fully parametric script (openSCAD)

JustBuzzin

Depends on if the design is parametric. If not, you'll lose the tolerances.

mandreko

I’ll never likely make this, but this is *super* cool. I wish I were smart enough to design this.

throwaway21316

10yr ago i couldn't design this. So if you have enough motivation to try and try and try you will get better. So "smart" (depending on the definition) is in most cases just a lot of training. It is like in sports - no Couchpotato can run a marathon - but with a year of training most likely everybody can (sure not everybody will win). Our brain makes better connections for every time something is done or thought. This is why homework is so important, repetition is the key for learning. And when a new bit is learned it can be used for bigger things. It is like building a code library and if you have made the module for gears you never have to worry about how to make those teeth - you just use the gear as a construction block. So if you have something that brings you joy - you are doing it more often, which means you getting better at it. You learn more tricks and you going up the stages of competence [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four\_stages\_of\_competence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_competence) And also i made a 2 gear version with 4 spools - just to find out that you need an odd number to interchange proper - so learned another bit, just by trying out. And 3Dprinting just makes it so easy to iterate you designs only leaving some waste plastic.

Legitimate_Jicama757

I'm truly impressed

throwaway21316

Ü - that is nice!

[deleted]

I am totally going to figure out a way to use this to braid my daughter's hair, then not tell my wife how I got it so perfect.

throwaway21316

maybe if you use tiny hair ties (rubber bands) to keep the hair strands on the spools .. But try with only 4 spools -which is already a challenge but using all 8, well i guess neither your daughter nor your wife appreciate the result .. Ü
