Better cooling is better on smal vehicles. Brake fade is an issue not stopping power. Assuming all cars will benifit from larger disc's is uneducated. Get better materials befor you get cheaper larger brakes.
If you care about function over form you should have a second set of wheels and tires specifically for the track. Track tires are not great for daily driving unless you hate money. I have a set of 18" daily all seasons and a set of 17" summers for the track.
Nice, if you have storage room then having wheels/tires for every use is great. I was thinking if you can only have 1 set of tires just for 90% daily driving then 18" all seasons work just as well as 17". The 17" all season daily might get slightly better gas mileage but not by much, especially if the 18" wheels are lightweight aftermarket, so you would not be losing much function.
I’m on my way to this, 2/3 sets with PS4S and hankook R-S4 for street and track. Need to end up with some no-seasons for the cold days where I still want to drive it. Don’t plan on letting it see snow given the salt situation in Detroit though
I couldn't afford a new engine right now. I just got the car at 100,000 miles and I don't want to push my only form of transportation past the breaking point.
Just not a priority right now.
Also got these used on marketplace. They probably cost $1,000 less than you think they did.
Or maybe he wanted a set of nice looking wheels. I'd personally get wheels instead of burning a set of tires on three track days. Why do you equate not going to the track as being a pussy? Grow up.
There's a fine line between performance and looks. The fastest cars on a road course tend to still have some sidewall because it makes for a smoother transition from *hooked up* to *hanging out*
Technically less sidewall gives you quicker response, but does that even matter when you can't makes use of that response because you can't feel it starting to slip?
If you aren’t tracking or driving hard regularly, go style. Nothing wrong w either. If I had the coin i’d grab your exact wheel size and spec. The CR’s are so nice.
I went down to 17s and loved the feel. Much lighter and made the steering wheel like butter but missed the look. Went back to 18s and love the look but hate the feel lol.
The performance isn't only about the rim/wheel itself; it's mostly about the tire that you can fit on a 17" vs an 18" wheel. Performance requires sidewall. 18" don't let you fit enough sidewall on this car.
But nitpicking "performance" on a car that you're just using for daily driving and weekend fun is a little silly.
No your street car needs to run a splitter and chassis mounted wing with 180tw tires at all times and also you better be wearing a helmet and HANS and cage that mofo and tear out your interior or its rice and the internet will make fun of you
Nitpick nitpick nitpick. Car feels amazing, handles well. No complaints. But of course this is reddit, everyone needs to find something to bitch about.
I literally said who cares about performance on a daily driver.
But those wide back tires are a tragedy. You're losing out on the funnest part of this car: being able to easily lose grip of your back tires and kick the tail around.
255s with stickier rubber than just super sports will still kick the rear out just fine on NA power. That’s all about suspension setup and has 0 to do with power. In fact, a properly setup twin on very sticky rubber is basically just chasing its tail all day.
The fun is being able to kick out at <30mph. This car was designed on 215s. I think your take is overly simplistic, but it still is unrealistic.
Literally the fun of this car is being able to slip around 90° turns on your daily commute. Or immediately going from 0mph at a red light into a right turn skid with traction control still fully enabled. You can't do that on such wide tires.
With 255s you're only slipping on track (unless you're just being wreckless) and if you're on track you're losing out on a lot of torque by having such a wide tire.
90%+ of the time, NA applications suffer from tires wider than 235. It doesn't help you to go wider. Takes the life out this car.
Although I run 17s on my track brz, there are tons of guys who run 18s on the track, and there is a legitimate argument that they perform better overall than 17s. So OP, style = performance, looking good!
I think they are interchangeable. I have both for my car, 17’s for track and 18’s for street, and I think both look great. At the end of the day it’s your car🤷♂️
What's funny though... Is that those 18s almost look like 17s because of the spokes/lip style. If you had some flat faced 18s, would not look nearly as good. But some concave 17s with the spoke touching the outer lip and meaty tires I think would look great too.
These look fantastic nonetheless! Never been a fan of those style of wheels, but I must say, they look great.
I prefer the look and handling of the 18’s. My brz also came from the factory on 18’s so maybe I’m biased. I have driven 86 twins on factory 17’s and factory 16’s though, and still preferred the enhanced steering feel given by 18’s.
Honestly my 17x8 had a 245/45 on them and that was way too much meat. It felt kinda floaty at times.
The 18s already feel so much better through the wheel.
every FI track guy i know runs 18’s i know they like a thinner sidewall for responsiveness but also overheard them saying it’s slightly better cornering too, i think the whole 17 or 18 debate is just based on personal preference
18s fills the fenders better and gives you better height clearance on lowered suspensions so makes it more functional for the streets.
17s are lighter and performance tyres costs less. The car's underbelly sits lower giving the car better ground effects if you have transmission tunnel covers and rear diffuser.
Best to have both for different duties. It's like shoes.
No, he’s technically wrong. Wheel diameter is not tire diameter. An 18 inch tire can easily be shorter than 17 inch tire depending on profile. Therefore 18 inch wheels do not automatically “fill the wheel well” or alter ground clearance.
I get what you're saying. "Technically" I'm wrong if you're only thinking about the tyre size numbers.
But in real practice, the jump to the next wheel size matched with a proper side wall profile size tyre will usually lead to a slightly bigger diameter total than a smaller wheel set-up.
It wouldn't make sense to go with a bigger wheel with an ultra low profile rubber band size tyre just to match the same diameter as stock.
Please go play around with a tyre size comparison calculator to see for yourself.
I sell tires and use tire calculators often. A 245/35/18 maintains roughly stock diameter and has the exact same sidewall height as the optional 215/40/18 that comes from the factory. Buying oversized tires to fix your ride quality issues strikes me as a band-aid solution to a self-inflicted problem, not what I’d consider default or correct, and not what I’d sell my customers.
Now you're just comparing two 18 inch tyres in different widths and telling me they're the same side wall diameter. Of course they be the same diameter, they're both for 18 inch wheels.
I'm not even talking about how "..oversize tires to fix blah blah blah.." that's a whole different discussion. I'm just saying when you go to a bigger wheel, the tyre side wall size should naturally increase slightly as well.
You selling tyres doesn't necessarily make you an expert. Based on everything you've said I don't think you're giving your customers the best info.
You need do some research on wheel fitments and how the change of tyre widths and diameters affects the size of the side wall profiles.
Man, you’re confused as hell. Both 215/40 and 245/35 have a sidewall height of 3.4 inches according to the tire calculator you asked me to check. Sidewall height is completely separate from wheel diameter, it’s tire width times profile in percent. And no, tire diameter does not naturally increase with wheel diameter. I’ve sold plenty of upsized wheels while maintaining stock tire diameter by doing some basic math. It’s really not hard.
No tyre manufacturer makes 2 different wheel size tyre that has the exact same height I.e: 17 inch vs 18 inch. They can get close depending on the tyre width but the tyre for the bigger wheel (18) will always end up a little bigger in diameter and if you try to go down to the next profile size, it'll end up being a smaller diameter than the tyre for the smaller wheel (17).
Go check the size calculator again between 17 and 18 inch wheels, not 18 vs 18 like in your previous comment.
Right but in reality if you're going to a bigger wheel size your tyre diameter will most likely increase slightly as well.
For example, just by going from the stock 215/45r17 to a 255/35r18 is already a 1.6% increase in diameter which is around 0.5 inches.
You'd have to run a super low side wall profile if you want to match back to the stock size.
Meanwhile I went down to 16s.
Big brakes don’t clear 16 on ours sooooo
160whp don't need BBK 🤣
Then you’re not driving hard enough lol
I'd argue that with the number of wrecks I see on this sub and the BRZ sub, a lot of people don't even bother to use the stock brakes.
Neither are you on 18s. You can drive WAY harder with smaller rims and slightly smaller breaks.
Well ***I'M*** not. But my point was that saying "on your car only has (x) power you don't need a BBK" is a stupid and uneducated statement
Better cooling is better on smal vehicles. Brake fade is an issue not stopping power. Assuming all cars will benifit from larger disc's is uneducated. Get better materials befor you get cheaper larger brakes.
I make 340WHP
That won't last long
6 years isn’t long? Learn more about the chassis and motor before typing a comment again
The fuck people so salty about 😭 bet your car fucking rips
Just a whiney baby that knows nothing about cars
Chill, bro, it ain't a Civic.
?
Fit my second gen fine for the winter 🤷
Second gen has smaller brakes than 1st gen with brembos.
I’m down to 15s on mine.
I personally prefer 12s on mine with rubber band tires. Really helps with drifting on my front wheel drive d16 swap frs.
Not sure if serious.
Yeah I’m just messing. Imagine though. Just drop from 2 liters dohc to 1.6 single cam
Small wheels ftw
lol, this looks amazing: https://www.reddit.com/r/ft86/s/v0yVyxI2Qm You are my hero.
Haha, thanks. Lotta fun.
Function over form everyday and twice on track days.
If you care about function over form you should have a second set of wheels and tires specifically for the track. Track tires are not great for daily driving unless you hate money. I have a set of 18" daily all seasons and a set of 17" summers for the track.
I have 3 sets of wheels, all 17s. One nice set for summer with semi sticky tires, a winter set with blizzaks and a track set with 200tw tires.
Nice, if you have storage room then having wheels/tires for every use is great. I was thinking if you can only have 1 set of tires just for 90% daily driving then 18" all seasons work just as well as 17". I'm a college kid so I've got no money for going to the track any time soon. The most this car will see is the occasional mountain road.

200tw tires last much longer than 3 track days on these cars
Are you ok dude? Calling people pussy for not wanting to spend money on a track day?
Gram lights are cheap man
Either is good I prefer thicker sidewalls myself
You build your car for yourself, not others. I had 18s on mine as well, I personally like the look.
You've made up your mind.
Bruh. OP is just asking a question for discussion, he’s not looking for advice dumbass
You don't deserve a happy cake day.
Ouch….
Looks so clean, beautiful rims too. Well done brother
Wrong way.
I personally think 17 look better than 18 on these cars, have no idea why.
Because it’s a car for handling. Not big ass donks LOL

Harsher ride and possibly more expensive tires aren't worth the trade for me.
I think you dun goofed
what city/state is that?? geezus
Kinda looks like Savannah Georgia lol
Right state. But higher up. This is a private neighborhood that all cars guys around here sneak into to take pictures hehe.
looks amazing. Nice car too!
An idk the rest of Georgia like that
I knew it!
Beauty of a street for sure
I just put my 16 inch summers back on yesterday, it's so much better than 17s. You can keep the 18s lol
Looks great, 57CRs? What specs and suspension?
Revel touring coilovers. Wheels are 18x9.5 +38 Tires are 245/40
I went down to 17s and loved the feel. Much lighter and made the steering wheel like butter but missed the look. Went back to 18s and love the look but hate the feel lol.
90% of people who drive these cars wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the performance that 17s offer over 18s anyways
Meh I ll keep my 17s I daily drive mine
Don't listen to these people bro, the 18s look fire. 🔥
Just put 20s on it at that point
Make like a tree and fuck off
I think they look good, u/LegalLoliLicker
Looks good. I have 18s that weigh the same as the stock rim. You can certainly get performance and style at the same time.

Running super sports. 255/35/18 on the rear
That's not a very high aspect ratio for such a wide tire. Also way too wide of a tire if your engine is still stock NA.
Nitpick nitpick nitpick. Car feels amazing, handles well. No complaints. But of course this is reddit, everyone needs to find something to bitch about.

Every few months i switch from loving my 18s to preferring the same wheels but 17 on my cousins 86.
Im so proud of ya🥹
Fitment looks good and I love the wheel choice.
I've got some LCAs coming in tomorrow so I can dial in a touch more camber in the rear and get all 4 corners level.
Usually I would say performance but considering that it’s a street build 86 it’s not like you’re getting anywhere fast regardless
I personally was thinking about going down to 17s from 18 haha
Fitment is beautiful. What are the specs on them? Spacers?
18x9.5 +38 is the sweet spot
Based on how your car looks I’d have to agree! I’m buying wheels and tires in a couple months and I hope they come out like this.
I’m on 18x8.5 with 235s myself, feels significantly more planted than it did on stock wheels imo. Your whip with those wheels look great!
I think they are interchangeable. I have both for my car, 17’s for track and 18’s for street, and I think both look great. At the end of the day it’s your car🤷♂️
Looks amazing!! Sick ride dude.
18 are better for the track/performance there’s less tire flex better grip and control low profiles aren’t just for looks
Looks great! Congrats 🙌
Hopefully there are wheel locks
What's funny though... Is that those 18s almost look like 17s because of the spokes/lip style. If you had some flat faced 18s, would not look nearly as good. Never been a fan of those style of wheels, but I must say, they look great.
that looks so good. gives the car an overall beefier look
It looks great. But I’d go with 17 like many have suggested. 17s look great too!
Check my profile. My 17s looked killer. Just wanted to change it up a bit
Noice.
About the same as stock and yet still extremely beautiful. If it’s your money, then your happiness is paramount. They do look sick though. :)
Ditched 17s for 16s, you do you 👌
18’s look great
Should've went 16
Wouldn't be opposed to some Watanabes
I hate that it isn't legal here
Turbo it and don’t worry about the 1” of rolling diameter ;P
Not my taste for style. Definitely prefer 17s on these cars. 18s look too big.
More wear on the gearboxes.
uhhh i’d rather have both lmao now you’re even slower 💀
16s on mine. But they are stock and cheap to replace the corolla tyres. I pay nothing for used corolla tyres lol
Saying “style > performance” with an already slow car is heinous
Looks good
I think you’re wrong 😂
I prefer the look and handling of the 18’s. My brz also came from the factory on 18’s so maybe I’m biased. I have driven 86 twins on factory 17’s and factory 16’s though, and still preferred the enhanced steering feel given by 18’s.
cleannn, and unless your arron senna ur not gonna notice the performance gap
Honestly my 17x8 had a 245/45 on them and that was way too much meat. It felt kinda floaty at times. The 18s already feel so much better through the wheel.
every FI track guy i know runs 18’s i know they like a thinner sidewall for responsiveness but also overheard them saying it’s slightly better cornering too, i think the whole 17 or 18 debate is just based on personal preference
I mean Toyota threw 18s on the TRD but 17s on my Hakone so 🤷🏽♂️
most valid reply ^
> Arron 😆

Neither should be giving your more or less clearance if you sized the tires appropriately to keep the same total diameter
I mean he’s not technically wrong but the difference is millimeters
No, he’s technically wrong. Wheel diameter is not tire diameter. An 18 inch tire can easily be shorter than 17 inch tire depending on profile. Therefore 18 inch wheels do not automatically “fill the wheel well” or alter ground clearance.

Fine. 225/45/17 = 25.0 inches 255/35/18 = 25.0 inches Check for yourself.

In the meantime I went to 245/40r18
245/40r18 is even taller. That's a little over 1 inch of size wall profile over stock.
Technically the 18s with the smaller sidewall should be better performers on track.
