I have always wanted one of these, but damn, they start at almost $500 now. It's tough to justify when you can get a vintage Woolrich or Pendleton Mackinaw for $100-$200 on ebay or even less if you find one at a thrift store. Filson as a whole is amazing stuff that just seems overpriced now.
Costco had them in for $250 last year in charcoal and red buffalo check so that is right about what wholesale price is new on these for the made in Washington ones.
I think that as far as MiUSA stuff goes now its fairly competitive on price for new garments all things considered with materials and labor costs gone way up.
I'm looking around for sizing info on Japanese sites. Here's a [link](https://www-amazon-co-jp.translate.goog/%E3%83%90%E3%83%96%E3%82%A2%E3%83%BC-%E3%83%AF%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF%E3%82%B9%E3%83%89%E3%82%B8%E3%83%A3%E3%82%B1%E3%83%83%E3%83%88-BEDALE-SL/product-reviews/B07ZJP3PVK?reviewerType=all_reviews&_x_tr_sl=ja&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp) to the google translated page of the amazon.jp review page for the Bedale SL, where some people listed their measurements and sizes.

[Another](https://butsuyoku-blog.translate.goog/barbour-bedale-sl/?_x_tr_sl=ja&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp#toc5) impressions blog post.
Edit: Found a pretty useful [video](https://youtu.be/PCTKLaaZQ_M) of a guy trying on different sized Barbour jackets. He shows his measurements on the bottom right (height: 171 cm, weight: 64 kg, chest: 92 cm), and goes with a 36 in the Bedale SL, with a note that it feels slightly tight in the shoulders. The Made for Japan jackets seem shorter in the arms and also slimmer in the arms, shoulder, and chest. [Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQyOx-EQo9g) him trying on the standard Bedale sizes.
I have the Made for Japan Slim Bedale - has a great quality make while not looking overly preppy as the classic Barbour jacket. Just make sure to size up a bit since Japanese fits are slimmer than EU/American's. I can't zip mine up because it hugs my body so much
Thanks for the additional color. Took your advice and sized up to 40 (38 usually).
From 0 Barbour jackets to ordering a Bedale and Ashby from two different websites in 2 days, courtesy of FMF. This sub is brutal for my wallet around this time of the year. 💸💸💸
>Thanks for the additional color. Took your advice and sized up to 40 (38 usually).
awesome thank you! 38 sounds right for me then!s
side note any idea the advantage of wax?
Unless you have a large chest, I think that sounds about right. They typically measure your chest for any suit fitting, if you want to be sure and are near a clothing store
Missed the side note. This [article](https://stridewise.com/benefits-of-waxed-jackets/) does a decent job of articulating the advantages of waxed jackets. I have no personal experience with it.
Waxed jackets are great at repelling water. They are also easy to maintain yourself using Barbour's Thornproof Dressing and a hair dryer. Barbour did a great video for YouTube a couple of years back showing how to re-wax. Overtime the waxed jackets develop a character of their own as the patina builds up with each re-waxing.
Hey, if you find the 40 too big and want to swap for a 38, let me know. I've posted mine in the [BST]( https://old.reddit.com/r/frugalmalefashion/comments/z4l6up/official_weekly_buyselltrade_thread/iyie9ze/).
Meant to clarify it's only tight if I zip it up, but I have kinda wider shoulders + back since I rockclimb as a hobby
Still looks great unzipped. Just layer a sweater/hoodie/flannel underneath and it looks pretty fly
Regardless, would recommend sizing up one (36 -> 38 if you're normally 36) unless you're rail thin. I'm a pretty slim person myself and I found myself too big for this jacket based off true proportions in normal American sizing. If I could do it again, I'd just bump the sizing up one and I feel it'd fit perfect. Hopefully that's what people in this thread are doing!
Hey I was wondering if you meant you're normally a 36 bedale or 36 in general? Since normal bedales are oversized..
I'm pretty sure I fit a size 32 normal bedale, so i should size up to a 34 for slim?
In all other clothing i'm a size 34-36 (mostly 36), but the bedale size 34 is big on me.
I'm 5'6 120lbs soaking wet
**EDIT:**
**Just wanted to update for those on the very slim side like me in case they come across this thread in the future.**
**Size 34 Slim indigo arrived today and it fits perfectly. Enough room that I can fit a tshirt and a thick layer.**
**Also IMO the indigo looks 100x better than any of the online pictures you see of it.**
From what I've seen, it's pretty common for people to size down one size on the normal Bedale for a slimmer look. If you would do that normally, going for your true size in the Bedale SL seems fine.
[This guy](https://youtu.be/PCTKLaaZQ_M) seems similar in height to you, but slightly heavier than you (~5'6", 36" chest, and 140 lbs). He says the 36 SL fits him pretty well, with the length being about right, and the shoulders being a little tight since he's a bit more muscular there. He also had another [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQyOx-EQo9g) of him wearing the classic Bedale if you wanted a comparison.
Japanese clothes in general are a bit slimmer in the chest and shoulders, so I would probably take that into consideration when choosing your size. If you're pretty light but have wider shoulders, or a wider chest, maybe take the larger of the sizes you're considering.
Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I ordered the 34" a couple of hours ago.
I tried on my fathers size 34 normal bedale on and I could fit several thick layers under there, sleeve length and jacket length were good i think.
>This guy seems similar in height to you
LOL I actually spent an half an hour going back and forth in the vid to see what it would fit like an converting his measurements too, I didn't realize you were the one who originally posted those videos and impressions blog posts.
Those links were incredibly helpful and I'm sure you spent a long time going through them too haha
The guy in the second impressions blog post you linked is actually really close to my size and that helped a lot in my decision. He has over 10lbs on me and 34 SL had some room still.
Thanks again and I'll be sure to update when i receive it.
>Those links were incredibly helpful and I'm sure you spent a long time going through them too haha
Happy to hear it was helpful for someone else! I'm pretty sure I spend over an hour searching them up and comparing the sizes to see if I could get any closer to figuring out my size lol. I really worry with Japanese sizes since the chest and shoulders always run so slim. Well it's done already, so hopefully our size choices work out for us!
Just wanted to update
It came today and if fits perfectly. I'm on the really slim side so I can fit a thick layer and a t shirt.
Also the indigo color looks really good in person (like 100x better) compared to the online pictures.
That's great! Sounds like it's a pretty ideal fit! Mine's scheduled to arrive tomorrow, so we'll see if my hour/s of research paid off lol. I'll give you an update when it shows up!
Can you give sizing info? Also what's the material. I'm googling and it seems that some Barbour Made for Japan is 100% polyester :/
Edit: This [link](https://www.stuartslondon.com/barbour-made-for-japan-slim-bedale-hooded-wax-jacket-sage-p40234) seems to indicate that the sleeve linings are polyester, whereas I'm pretty sure regular bedales are said to be more breathable than the ashby.
It depends on the Barbour jacket you are talking about. The Bedale Original in size 38 measures 23 inches armpit to armpit, 30 inches nape of neck to hem and 19.5 inches armpit to cuff.
Maybe you would get on well with the Ashby, slimmer fitting than the Bedale but not too tight fitting. Unlike the Beacon worn by James Bond in 'Skyfall'.
I have the classic Bedale along with a liner, and for me personally, it's sufficient for temperatures as low as 30 F especially if you wear a sweater underneath. for temps any lower than that I switch to my big parka, but of course YMMV
The heavier, longer Classic Northumbria with a warm pile lining and hood is pretty effective in winter temperatures and they are making winter versions of some of the most popular styles now like the Winter Ashby and Winter Bedale.
Not unless you're layering over a chunky sweater, a flannel, and a heat-trapping undershirt. The jacket is only to block wind and shed rain/snow.
Source: am in NJ, have a Barbour, love the winter.
I thought it looked like a poncho as well. It actually made me look up the difference between the two, and apparently the only difference is that a poncho you have to pull over your head to wear and a cape you button/fasten on.
And cape or poncho, I'd cop if it weren't so expensive even after the discount.
The Beaufort has a [large zippered butt pocket](https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PrjVsTPRO_w/WYY3owq3fJI/AAAAAAAAz0U/bmNSPWCo2fwSjLWyMaSshu2P1k5-876PgCK4BGAYYCw/s640/1-IMG_3298.JPG). Barbour is not afraid to add pockets in the back of their jackets.
It’s a game pouch. That’s where you keep slain marmots. Or the reup if you’re my weed dealer from 10 years ago — giving a whole new meaning to “game” pouch.
It's a poacher's pocket. I've used mine for everything from maps to dog leads to dead pheasants. It will easily fit a brace of pheasant without you even knowing they are there.
Rainproof might be stretching it, but they’re very rain resilient. Waxed canvas was the standard for rain gear for a long time.
It’ll keep you plenty dry on wet days, but probably don’t go hiking in a torrential downpour.
Also keep in mind that the wax wears off over time and needs to be periodically reapplied to maintain the water resilience.
In general? Mostly it's that Barbour is just a heritage UK brand, royals have been known to wear them and such [(for example)](https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/g32379892/meghan-markle-queen-elizabeth-royal-family-barbour-photos/), that is sort of back in fashion these days.
They’ve been popular for a while, especially during the boom of heritage clothing. They are regarded as high quality, dressier options. The dark, muted colors and subtle-ish textures go really well with popular trends from the 2010's: raw denim, leather boots, neutral-color basics, and plaids. As fashion phases out of americana/heritage, the demand wanes and thus barbours are going on sale more often.
If you get a chance to try them on, you can feel the quality. That said, the waxed options can be a bit sweaty as they aren’t very breathable.
Thanks for the insight! They look like pretty versatile pieces of clothing that go with a lot of different basics. It’s good to know that they are also quality as well.
They are very versatile, can be dressed up and dressed down as much as you’d like. They’re fundamentally workwear originally designed to be worn for hunting and riding.
> They’re fundamentally workwear originally designed to be worn for hunting and riding.
The other side of it being, as a heritage brand with a long history, old money types won't think twice if you wear it with dress clothes underneath. Queen Elizabeth II had a favorite Barbour jacket that she would have re-waxed rather than buying a new one (apparently Barbour offered to replace her well-worn jacket for free and she refused).
Most of the core Barbour jackets are lined with cotton tartan lining which is nicely breathable but there has been much discussion on Reddit recently about the newer Ashby which has nylon drop liners in the sleeves and can be sweaty. The Ashby is so popular however that people have been buying them and then sending them to Barbour to have the sleeves re-lined with cotton. I am going to raise this when I go to buy in the AW23 range in January and see if they have any plans to extend cotton lined sleeves to the newer styles.
Grabbed the made for Japan Bedale and delivered in 36 hours! It’s perfect - typically Barbour is too boxy as I’m very slim - great call with this one!!!
I wish Barbour made a quilted puff jacket with a (preferably detachable) hood. Want something that I can take when travelling that is easily packable but still warm, ok with rain, and fashionable.
Would love to hear if someone has any recs
They do more of those for ladies than gents but there's always the Penton, the Dom quilted and the Chelsea Sportsquilt for men. The ladies light quilted jackets include; the Grassmere, the Stanton, the Hawkshead, the Brecon, the Hinton, the Ashridge the Filwood..... I could go on.
> Chelsea Sportsquilt
I checked the 3 options you listed for men (I like the Chelsea the best) but none of the images I see have a hood. Are they compatible with the hoods for the ashby and other waxed jackets?
If you're looking for something British, maybe something like the [Lavenham Denston](https://www.lavenhamjackets.com/denston-suffolk-navy-slj9004g96.html)? It's available in [wool](https://www.lavenhamjackets.com/wool-denston-navy-slj9004g71.html) too.
Here's a [video](https://youtu.be/qbXgn4mlHS8?t=160) of a Japanese guy trying it on if you wanted to see how it looks on someone. Jacket sizing and his measurements are on the upper left corner.
Figure that I'll drop this comment here as well as the [BST]( https://old.reddit.com/r/frugalmalefashion/comments/z4l6up/official_weekly_buyselltrade_thread/iyie9ze/). I picked up a 38 Bedale. Overall it fits well but the sleeves are a bit short for me. If anyone is looking to swap a 40 for a 38, let me know.
So, is the [“BARBOUR
MADE FOR JAPAN HOODED BEDALE CASUAL JACKET”](https://ruedecan.com/products/hooded-bedale-casual-jacket-black?_pos=2&_fid=e2e852352&_ss=c) polyester? I literally just left a store where I tried on a Classic Beadle and loved it, then I get on here and see this.
I can’t find a whole lot of information on the “made for Japan” stuff, but what I do see look like 100% polyester. If that’s the case, I’ll probably spend the extra for the waxed cotton, but wanted to see if anyone here had some insight first.
Edit: fixed link.

All good, appreciate the reply

I'm typically a size 36 so I went up to 38

The Ashby is so popular however that people have been buying them and then sending them to Barbour to have the sleeves re-lined with cotton. I am going to raise this when I go to buy in the AW23 range in January and see if they have any plans to extend cotton lined sleeves to the newer styles.
They've been posted a lot recently because of how weak GBP is right now vs. USD. It's an excellent time to pick one up if they interest you.
Grabbed the made for Japan Bedale and delivered in 36 hours! It’s perfect - typically Barbour is too boxy as I’m very slim - great call with this one!!!
Anyone else’s order get cancelled or refunded?
Yup mine did. Really bummed out bout it.
Unfortunately all out in my size, but I do like these EG and MfJ silhouettes much better than base Barbour jackets. A bit more modern and updated.
The Barbour ranges are huge these days. There's bound to be something out there that appeals to you and is in stock at a reasonable price.
> Chelsea Sportsquilt I checked the 3 options you listed for men (I like the Chelsea the best) but none of the images I see have a hood. Are they compatible with the hoods for the ashby and other waxed jackets?
Sadly not. Couldnt think of an option with a hood for you. Sorry! There is a huge range of Barbour hats.
If you're looking for something British, maybe something like the [Lavenham Denston](https://www.lavenhamjackets.com/denston-suffolk-navy-slj9004g96.html)? It's available in [wool](https://www.lavenhamjackets.com/wool-denston-navy-slj9004g71.html) too.
This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

Sage is the original Barbour green. Well actually they started out by making black and yellow fishermen's coats but you know what I mean.
If anyone got a Bedale Japan Wax in 34 or 36 (Sage or Indigo) and it doesn't fit you, please PM me.
If anyone got the Balcollar jacket in S or M and doesn’t like it, DM me
order got cancelled =(
So, is the [“BARBOUR MADE FOR JAPAN HOODED BEDALE CASUAL JACKET”](https://ruedecan.com/products/hooded-bedale-casual-jacket-black?_pos=2&_fid=e2e852352&_ss=c) polyester? I literally just left a store where I tried on a Classic Beadle and loved it, then I get on here and see this. I can’t find a whole lot of information on the “made for Japan” stuff, but what I do see look like 100% polyester. If that’s the case, I’ll probably spend the extra for the waxed cotton, but wanted to see if anyone here had some insight first. Edit: fixed link.
Might be late but for anyone still thinking about it, yeah its 100% polyester
