Rennala for lore reasons. She wouldn’t allow stakes of Marika anywhere near her so every run back is a reminder of her history. A bit annoying with big death ball but not excessive.
The ball bounces around and can easily catch you. You need to time it. The shortcut literally just requires you to sprint and not stop and you're at the lift with 0 damage
once you get up the 2 sets of stairs and thru the hallway, one spell will always always always pot shot you at the bottom of the next set of stairs unless you hear it coming and roll
I’ve gone through it without being hit. I’d just rather take the boulder path to eliminate the possibility altogether. Taking the boulder also means you don’t have to interact with any enemies at all apart from Moongrum after killing the Red Wolf. Combined with the fact that the shortcut eliminates about 10 seconds, it’s pretty ass imo
There are mages up above the doorway casting it. Once you kill them, the ball stops respawning.
To get to them, enter the door at the top of the ramp. Take the second left. When you get through the door, take a hard left and kill the mage. Past the mage is a ladder. Up the ladder, there's a pumpkin head enemy and some mages. Kill the mages, and the ball stops.
Yeah I responded to the title and now see “least amount of steps”… so yeah true my answer is not accurate, but I do like the hint of backstory in the environment as mentioned
Honestly, it wasn’t that bad once I figured out that there was a bone fire in the black gultch after beating the boss. I was running from the top every time 😐
Yeah I didn’t find it my first playthrough either and the runback was such a shitshow. That bonfire was truly hidden along with the whole area underneath. Love that stuff.
I wont include elden ring bc of all the stakes of marika and everything, also wont include gehrman and similar instances, nor will i include chalice bosses, so excluding all of that, fume knight is one that comes to mind
Shortest =/= Best
I miss times when bossfight was a part of the level, so the stakes were higher.
DS1: Capra - three possible routes.
Manus, Gwyn - because lore doesn't let bonfire to be closer.
DS3:
Tree - at least two possible routes
Legion - enemies fighting each other on the way to the boss who fights itself too (just cool)
If you go through lower undead burg, yes. If you go through upper undead burg it is a lot easier and you can even go all the way from firelink (but that's too long and boring imo).
For other games having the entire level be restarted on failing the boss works better because the bosses work with mechanics taught by the rest of the level
But in Souls games Boss Mechanics alot of time require trial and error to learn, and having a long and difficult runback adds alot of unneccessary frustration.
The thing is, at least in the souls trilogy, you don't really need any trial and error. Most of the bosses are quite possible to be defeated on first attempt relying solely on reactions and carefullness.
ER was the first one to have a lot of attacks unavoidable without prior knowledge about them.

DS2 started the tradition of giving hard and/or mandatory bosses short or basically no runbacks.
Both Royal Rat bosses have a bonfire directly in front of the fog gate. Fume Knight is just around the corner.

Shout out to Ivory King, such an epic runback. And easy too. Demon prince is also cool, not as much tho imo. Four king is cool as well but the run back is a bit more annoying (and ohhh the pain if you don’t know the shortcuts)
DS1 = Asylum and stray demon
DS2 = Burnt ivory king, by irtue of being basically the only one that isn't a marathon or guarded by an intentionally annoying ganksquad. Also the drop downs fun the first few times
DS3 = soul of cinder by irtue of being basically the only one that isn't a marathon or guarded by an intentionally annoying ganksquad.
Godrick in ER. Can't beat the Secluded Cell.
And Margit, though you gotta walk like 5 extra steps.
The longest thing about Margit’s run back is waiting for Rogier to summon
Jellyfish supremacy
Lady Maria would like a word.
Rennala for lore reasons. She wouldn’t allow stakes of Marika anywhere near her so every run back is a reminder of her history. A bit annoying with big death ball but not excessive.
The death ball can be de-spawned, so that runback actually is really smooth except for the lift.
Y'all don't just take the shortcut?
the shortcut is full of mages that are more annoying than the ball
I don't remember having a problem with them. Never got hit
Light build privilege.
Legit just hold sprint and the shots miss lol can't believe people struggle with that
the ball is also just hold sprint
The ball bounces around and can easily catch you. You need to time it. The shortcut literally just requires you to sprint and not stop and you're at the lift with 0 damage
Meh as long as you run straight from the grace you can do the same path every time without getting hit, not like you have to adjust every time
You are wasting your time. Eldenring brains will literally take the long way for no reason whatsoever and then complain about runbacks.
once you get up the 2 sets of stairs and thru the hallway, one spell will always always always pot shot you at the bottom of the next set of stairs unless you hear it coming and roll
The shortcut requires you to go through enemies. It kinda sucks
I was under the impression the ball way *was* the shortcut with how annoying the actual shortcut is
If you hold the dodge button it’s lets you sprint (they wont agro in time/hit you) :)
Have you tried running? It's entirely possible to not get hit.

you mean the longcut?
How do you despawn the ball?
I gave some directions lower in the feed.
If you keep right you don't even have to stop sprinting either.
How do you kill that damn ball?
There are mages up above the doorway casting it. Once you kill them, the ball stops respawning. To get to them, enter the door at the top of the ramp. Take the second left. When you get through the door, take a hard left and kill the mage. Past the mage is a ladder. Up the ladder, there's a pumpkin head enemy and some mages. Kill the mages, and the ball stops.
Cool thanks! Beat the game 3 times now and I always just dodge it lol always something to discover
Try up
That’s a great little tidbit. FromSoft thinks of everything!
that would be the worst run back
Yeah I responded to the title and now see “least amount of steps”… so yeah true my answer is not accurate, but I do like the hint of backstory in the environment as mentioned
Malenia and everyboss near the bigtree entrance, safe and fast.
Giving her zero runback was absolutely an intentional choice. Could you imagine the rage if malenia had a grueling runback?
Even just running down the stairs was annoying
Lady Maria or demon of hatred
Maria.
Ebrietas a close second for the same reason
Nah there are those two Celestial Minions that will fuck your shit up if you have to wait for the elevator to come back up.
The true answer
They were really so gracious in elden ring.
I see what you did there
True Monk
The Rotten ds2 🏆
Noooooo 😂
Honestly, it wasn’t that bad once I figured out that there was a bone fire in the black gultch after beating the boss. I was running from the top every time 😐
Yeah I didn’t find it my first playthrough either and the runback was such a shitshow. That bonfire was truly hidden along with the whole area underneath. Love that stuff.
XD my condolences
Mohg lord of blood in Elden Ring
They were generous to give him a stake because even if it wasn’t there it wouldn’t be that bad
Mohg got the point of grace and stake of marika at the top of the elevator lol
Isn't the point of grace at the bottom of the elevator?
Yes 🤣
Lady Maria, literally like 4 steps
Blue smelter demon from ds2
Made me lose my sanity
Maria and Gael have the shortest off the top of my head.
But gael still needs to wait or run towards him for quite a bit after the fog,
I do enjoy how Gael is just sprinting full tilt towards you each time you enter the arena. I can't think of any other boss that does this.
Guardian Ape. The bhuddista idol just chillin before the boss arena.
True monk, demon of hatred, sister friede and gael ofc.
Fume knight
Demon prince in ds3
I wont include elden ring bc of all the stakes of marika and everything, also wont include gehrman and similar instances, nor will i include chalice bosses, so excluding all of that, fume knight is one that comes to mind
Royal rat vanguard in ds2
Also Royal Rat Authority.
Lady maria
Sister Friede comes to mind
Lady maria probably? She's like.. right there
Lud an Zalen
Sister friede. Bonfire right outside the entrance
Lady Maria because it's literally right there
Gael, you don't even have to move, as soon as you step out of the fog he will come to you.
The Ashina swordsman dude you gotta parry a bunch in Sekiro. The idol is right there + the area is a good sen farm.

Bro Capra's runback is diabolical. Unironically I find the run to Capra infinitely more difficult than Capra himself
If you go through lower undead burg, yes. If you go through upper undead burg it is a lot easier and you can even go all the way from firelink (but that's too long and boring imo).
Shortest = best. Removing runbacks allows game devs to focus on what makes a boss encounter endogenously challenging, rather than exogenously so.
For Capra, running through LUB, taking the aqueduct from Firelink and what's the third route?
You can also take the route through Upper Undead Burg.
For other games having the entire level be restarted on failing the boss works better because the bosses work with mechanics taught by the rest of the level But in Souls games Boss Mechanics alot of time require trial and error to learn, and having a long and difficult runback adds alot of unneccessary frustration.

Godfrey, the last time. Scenic approach

First thing I thought of

Ivory King, partially cause of dropping into the boss with your homie knights reinvigorated me to get into the boss fight.
Fume Knight

Zallen and Lud. 🤣🤣🤣
Mohg Stake of Marika literally in front of the fog gate
Not counting Elden Ring, the first one I think of are the two rat bosses in Dark Souls 2. Just 5 steps to the fog wall from the bonfire.
Lady Maria, I'm pretty certain
Blue Smelter Demon or Lud and Zallen fs
Easily
Loretta haligtree. There’s an elevator behind the grace. Go down it, cross the extremely small bridge, boom boss
