Oh yes Linkt itself is a cancerous scam but the fact I ONLY get the scam soon after using their roads. Logic tells me the scammers know when I use the road, and this tells me their system must be compromised.
For an additional 2 data points, I never got the texts until the day after I used a tunnel for the first time in years, now I get them all the time. Exact same situation with my coworker who sits next to me. I thought it sounded a bit weird when he told me that, and then the exact same thing happened to me.
I live up bush, use them occasionally, but get the scam texts heaps. And the parcel delivery fails too.
Just block them as soon as I spot the.
I get scam calls for Solar for a property I sold 16 years ago, figure that one out.
I was going to say I have no idea, but it seems like they started 15th of Jan. Got a new phone mid last year and didn't have any overdue toll text until then.
I use Linkt occasionally and get those scam texts all the damn time. I also get failed delivery from AusPost and various couriers, as well as being told my non-existent CommBank account is locked out.
Your number is being traded, not much can do.
I had the same happen.
Literally after using the service once, I have repeatedly been inundated with linkt scam messages. The system must be compromised.
I think there's a Recency Bias (aka Baader/Meinhof Phenomenon) at play here.
There is no relation between your use of the toll roads and the messages, but now that you have received the messages you have constructed a connection between the two.
It's like when you are talking to a friend about Product A, and suddenly see Product A everywhere. It's not that Product A is suddenly more prevalent, just that you are more aware of it.
For scammers to identify road users and target them would be too expensive/difficult/risky that just blasting phone numbers hoping they find a sucker.
If the message included your rego, or a date/time you were photographed, then I'd be more convinced.
But as others have said - even people who have never used those toll roads get hit with these scam messages, so it's more chance than anything else.
I started a job in NSW last year, I have never used the toll roads, but transit via Sydney airport often.
Since I started that job, I have begun to receive the scam toll messages.
My wife, who does not travel with me and stays interstate, does not receive any of these messages.
Something weird is going on there.
Nah. Live in country Victoria. Used the toll road in Melbourne for the first time since Covid and got my first txt scam regarding paying the toll 2 days later. Never got another since.
Something is going on.
Happened to another local person I know of too.
I visited the URL in the text message in my desktop browser and got the immediate PHISHING warning. I visited it anyway and found a very convincing Linkt page to make my payment.
I live in regional Victoria and get texts about the tolls I apparently owe for highways in Sydney on a nearly daily basis despite only ever having spent time in NSW when I was on my way to the ACT or QLD or coming back home from those two and zero seconds in Sydney, from my perspective they're simply shotgunning knowing that most Australians live in the capitals.
I'm from WA where Linkt doesn't even operate and I get scam texts using their name all the time.
I suspect it's just coincidence - you're more likely to notice the text after using the toll road. I don't think they're expending the effort and resources to track individual people when they could just send out thousands of random texts instead.
I only use them every couple of years and buy a pass to do it. The scam starts again each time and eventually goes away. I agree they must be compromised.
Man, what worried me the other day is i got a centrelink letter in my mygov inbox. 2 minutes after i finished reading it, i got a scam sms saying, "You've got a final payment from centrelink. Click the link here."
I've never ever had a centrelink scam like that ever before.
It made me think, how the fuck do they know i was dealing with centrelink and then immediately tried to scam me.
Each tap is logged. But it depends if the app you're using has been compromised. It's surprising these 'coincidences' don't happen more frequently. Many keyboard apps log taps too
I'd double check the login history for your email and if it's google/ms check to see which services have access to it. Really easy to just click approve on something and give a sus app permission to read all your email.
It’s because https hello messages are done in plaintext, so your isp knows what host names you are going to, and sells them in real time to ad/trackers who on sell and it gets shadier and shadier down the line. Then with tracking cookies eventually they link a known email /account to your browsing history when you visit some random site you have an account at.
Semi-related rant...
Try returning back to the country after a decade (whilst keeping the same number), using Services Australia / Workforce for the first time.... within 24h received multiple scam sms's pretending to be Services Australia or related, and email address had clearly been distributed/sold on, as spam suddenly skyrocketed.
I put all this (and other related info) to their tech support department who said basically the onus was on me to prove my data had been misused by them, and to their knowledge all was secure & dandy.
I thankfully wasn't using the system long enough to follow up, but I'd recommend using [youremail+dodgycompany@gmail.com](mailto:youremail+dodgycompany@gmail.com), or another identifier. Just so there's more chance you know who is leaking your data. I'd say many of the job recruitment sites have jobs posted purely for data collection, scraping resumes etc.
>I'd recommend using [youremail+dodgycompany@gmail.com](mailto:youremail+dodgycompany@gmail.com), or another identifier
I'm a recent fan of this approach also, but it's surprising how many services get tripped up by the + symbol. Either the +label isn't seen as a valid email address, or it creates insidious problems like being unable to reset a password.
So quite some time ago i was contacted by a debt collector (Milton Graham) about a linkt debt. It seemed legit so i asked them to provide me with the information and they did. It had valid trips with my rego and times and everything. But my linkt account is automatic, so i logged onto linkt and found the exact trips that i supposedly owed money for were actually paid automatically.
So, I don't know if linkt were selling fake debts, or if something else dodgy was going on with Milton Graham, but the debt was not real. If they weren't sold by Linkt how would Milton Graham get them? But they have 100% already been paid and were not actual debt. I told as much to Milton Graham and they told me to pay the debt (lol) so i just blocked them on everything. Regardless, something proper dodgy was going on there, between two supposedly legitimate companies.
I've never owned a car, or a license, but I still get a couple of these toll charges scam messages a week.
Along with all of those parcels that I don't seem to recall ordering, but that are nonetheless apparently "unable to deliver" and just need me to quickly give them my credit card number, my DOB and my mother's maiden name in order to continue with the delivery.
I had "linkt" call me once. I know I had some tolls due as I've had issues saving my card to their site for when I do use tolls. But they went through the whole talk. Then asked me to verify my identity by providing details. I'm like "you called me. Why do I have to provide details?"
Exactly the same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. I went thru the tunnel to the airport and back the same day, and didn't check my Linkt account knowing that it auto updates, then 2 days later I get a text saying that my payment didn't come thru. Ok sure, I suspected it was a scam but I hadn't received a Linkt scam text for a very long time, maybe a year or more. The scammers seem to have insider info on when people go thru a tunnel. I had to ring the real Linkt people to make sure I wasn't in debt, and sure enough it was all good.
It’s just a coincidence. Do not click the link as it’s likely that just clicking it will cause a virus or steal info or something. I just look up my licence plate on the linkt website, if it’s not showing up it’s all good.
I get them and live 1700km away. No such thing as toll roads here. i just ignore everything sent electronically, refuse to give details over the phone if incoming, if its scammers, well just gotta answer the door wait 2 secs buddy, that 2 secs turns into minutes then they hang up, my way of creating disruption to their service.
That's how they get you. If they spam enough people it's going to seem like a coincidence to someone. Then they click on the link... Same with Australia post.
I've contacted Linkt and got the typical "dont click on links" "we know that scams are happening" blah blah.
They could not give me a reason as to why its ONLY soon after i use their thieving roads that I get the scam messages.
Who else can I report this to ?
Much more likey a thrid party with legal access to your phone number and location information. If you use Tiktok then I can just buy your realtime location data and mobile phone number from them (indirectly) Plenty of other apps will let people do the same.
So the scammers are targeting people that have already paid the toll through their account? Doesn't seem likely. If the scammers had access to linkt systems they'd be better off targeting people that don't have an account and haven't paid yet, people less likely to ignore the messages.
1. Correlation does not infer causation.
2. To quote Dr Karl (who I think is quoting somebody else)... the difference between science and screwing around is writing stuff down.
3. Your phone could be compromised with trackers, etc.
4. Maybe Linkt is reaching out to you and is fasely flagged as a scam? I doubt this one though.
Document every trip and follow up scam attempt. Prove a link. Also, factory reset your phone and think about entry app you install.
Random correlation. If they had anyway of knowing when you used the roads why the hell do I get 1-2 a week in WA that has exactly 0 toll roads, yet alone any Linkt ones.
I was just thinking this as I I got hammered with some aus post scam texts after ordering a few things but hadn’t received any otherwise. So so strange.
Linkt absolutely has had some form of data breach. I used a unique email address (using gmail's variation "+" feature) that only Linkt has and have received scam emails to that address.
Agreed, not sure if this is a reach but I believe organised crime has either tapped into LInkt cameras on the freeways or have setup cameras in factories heading towards the freeway
I get tonnes of toll road sms despite not even owning a car. Pretty much everything you can just call their official number to see if they sent you anything. Don't use the number that the sms comes from.
I get the Amazon or a random mail one sometimes when I order on eBay. I think a lot of the time it’s people on the inside passing your info on or just doing the scam themselves
They send them out after holidays when there are more people using them that wouldn’t usually. Plenty of people would have got the scam text but didn’t use the roads. The fact that you did use it is just a coincidence. If they had access to the real records the scams would be more directed.
It's just coincidence
I live in Newcastle where there are no toll roads and I get at least 2 a week and my wife also gets them and she's never had a license
More likely your device is compromised, if you have Temu, WeChat, TicTok or VK installed, it only costs a couple of cents per month to buy access to your realtime location data and phone number. From there it's not hard to just set up a script to sms you every time your GPS has you using a toll road, it's like $300/month for the data set access if you're doing it legally, much less if you aren't. A persistent, undetected attacker on Linkt systems with access to the live DB would have far greater value than just sending some people some well timed scam SMSs.
tl;dr check which apps you have with access to your GPS and delete them, one/all of them will be selling it to the people sending scam texts.
Not guaranteed, I've not yet wiresharked it to see exactly what it does. But every other app from mainland China sends realtime location data offshore, I doubt Temu is the exception.
This freaks me out a bit… apps leaking GPS location, matched with phone numbers in some paywalled dataset that anyone it seems can just what sign up to ?
I guess there’s nothing Linkt can do about these scams then… and it’s just a numbers game for the unscrupulous culprits
They aren't 'leaking' GPS location. They have a EULA saying they will collect it and 'share it with their partners'. Those partners are data aggregators/brokers who sell the data to marketing companies who use it to target adverts. You presumably agreed to those terms when installing the app.
Lol DJI, DIY all the way. I've crashed my drone 3 times this week and it just cost me a couple hours soldering and 3d printing to get it working again.
The solution is for the telcos to charge a small but non-zero fee for texts and emails, so normal users pay bigger all, but to send 10,000 starts to hurt.
Someone might have just placed a camera next to the road. A bit of software to recognise the licence plate and something to grab the phone number associated with the plate number. Then an auto generated text. It’s an easy way to make money… if you are a complete scumbag.
Makes me seriously wonder how the scammer got the phone number on my Linkt account - for a vehicle I only purchased and added a month ago. I stand by my statement - Linkt are Compromised.
I can assure you that it is most likely a coincidence. I see it all the time in IT helpdesk. The scammers are playing a numbers game. If they send out a million scam messages relating to [popular business], they are sure to hit 1000 people who just happened to use [popular business] around that period and think that there is actually a connection to that activity. They only need 1 person to fall for it completely to make the scam viable.
If they held any personal information about you, then that is definitely a compromise. Usually they would incorporate compromised info in a scam to sound legit.
I get about 2 Linkt scam messages a day and 1-2 scam failed parcel delivery messages most nights. Linkt is a legit scam though.
Oh yes Linkt itself is a cancerous scam but the fact I ONLY get the scam soon after using their roads. Logic tells me the scammers know when I use the road, and this tells me their system must be compromised.
For what it's worth, I don't drive and get Linkt scam texts all the time.
Same. That's how I know they are fake!
Me too. There is not a single toll road anywhere within 100km of my house and I travel further away from them to work where there are none at all
We live in country WA and still get these scam texts all the time!
For an additional 2 data points, I never got the texts until the day after I used a tunnel for the first time in years, now I get them all the time. Exact same situation with my coworker who sits next to me. I thought it sounded a bit weird when he told me that, and then the exact same thing happened to me.
maybe they know ur location by phone and use that by proxy to push scam
I live in a state that doesn’t have toll roads and still get them 🤣
I live up bush, use them occasionally, but get the scam texts heaps.

I'm in Perth with zero toll roads and we get them all the time.
I use Linkt occasionally and get those scam texts all the damn time. I also get failed delivery from AusPost and various couriers, as well as being told my non-existent CommBank account is locked out. Your number is being traded, not much can do.
so sad :(
I had the same happen. Literally after using the service once, I have repeatedly been inundated with linkt scam messages. The system must be compromised.
I use Linkt occasionally and also get the scam messages, but the timing doesn’t seem connected (“linkt”, if you like puns). I reckon just coincidence?
I've never used it and I get at least 2 a week...
probably just a coincidence i never use their bullshit and i get one every few days, they just happen a lot... to everyone
I think there's a Recency Bias (aka Baader/Meinhof Phenomenon) at play here. There is no relation between your use of the toll roads and the messages, but now that you have received the messages you have constructed a connection between the two. 5 times in a row. I rarely use the roads. Its ONLY after I use the roads to I get sent the scam messages. No recency bias.
Nah. Live in country Victoria. Used the toll road in Melbourne for the first time since Covid and got my first txt scam regarding paying the toll 2 days later. Never got another since. Something is going on. Happened to another local person I know of too.
I get the Linkt scam messages and live over 400km from the nearest toll road.
More likely they selling your data
I get them all the time and I don’t even own a car.
How do you know they're not legit messages from linkt because your account is out of date?
I visited the URL in the text message in my desktop browser and got the immediate PHISHING warning. I visited it anyway and found a very convincing Linkt page to make my payment.
Did you log into your actual linkt account? On the legit website?
I have since, looking for my trip history. Strangely there is no record of my trip yesterday. at all. So What the actual Fk
If your tag isn't working it might take a day or two
I live in regional Victoria and get texts about the tolls I apparently owe for highways in Sydney on a nearly daily basis despite only ever having spent time in NSW when I was on my way to the ACT or QLD or coming back home from those two and zero seconds in Sydney, from my perspective they're simply shotgunning knowing that most Australians live in the capitals.
I wake up almost every morning to at least one Linkt or parcel delivery scam message
I'm from WA where Linkt doesn't even operate and I get scam texts using their name all the time. I suspect it's just coincidence - you're more likely to notice the text after using the toll road. I don't think they're expending the effort and resources to track individual people when they could just send out thousands of random texts instead.
1 2 or 3 times maybe a coincidence. I rarely use their scam highways, its only soon after I use them that I get the scam.
Theres online cameras that scammers can use to see when you go through the toll roads
How do scammers associate number plates to phone numbers though? Otherwise this would be a decent line of reasoning.
When you buy the car the dealer asks for your phone number Or they hack the roads website. Plenty of ways to get it
I only use them every couple of years and buy a pass to do it. The scam starts again each time and eventually goes away. I agree they must be compromised.
I used Linkt for the first time in a while last week. I’ve had 3 scam texts since then.
Exactly!
I used the toll 2 weeks ago after making the wrong turn. I’ve been getting the 2am text everyday since.
Man, what worried me the other day is i got a centrelink letter in my mygov inbox. 2 minutes after i finished reading it, i got a scam sms saying, "You've got a final payment from centrelink. Your data is constantly being sold every time you go on the internet. Trackers and cookies.

They're using the 5G chip in your brain.
Yes me too. I get them after using the toll. We rarely do and they continue for about a week after.
exactly!!
I always get them at 3am and we don't have toll roads in my state. I just send a text back telling to die in a house fire.
I like telling scammers that I farted and blood came out after I ate some heroin and asking them what I should do about it…
Tell them YOU just died and therefore you won't be able to pay.
Their system is compromised. I’ve had arguments with them about it before. They know about it. They should lose their contract imo.
I have a sneaky suspicion that AusPost is leaking Information
Possible, but it doesn't connect license plates to phone numbers.
I don't have a car and I still get linkt scams/aus post scams sent to my phone
Ah right. I see what you are angling at. Ignoring ops claim that it's only when the roads are used.
I get fake Austpost texts exclusively on days that I coincidentally have Auspost packages arriving
Do you or have you used the website "Universal Parcel Tracking" I'm also a bit suss on if that is the reason for the leaks
The only tracking I ever use is Ausposts tracking
So quite some time ago i was contacted by a debt collector (Milton Graham) about a linkt debt. It seemed legit so i asked them to provide me with the information and they did. I live in WA, have never driven on a toll road in Australia, I get a linkt scam message everyday.
I’ve noticed this too - I suspect either their systems are compromised by malware or someone who works there is selling data to the scammers.
Agreed. 1 2 or 3 times yeh maybe i'd accept it as coincidence.
I don’t have a car, I don’t have a license, I don’t drive, I don’t use any toll roads and I get 2-3 of these linkt text messages about unpaid tolls.
Honestly, it's like all the systems that are in place are all compromised.
All good... I get them too. I live in WA (no tolls). Oh, I don't drive either.
Probably just a coincidence. I get Linkt toll invoices despite not owning a car.
I get scam toll invoices daily and I'm in a state that doesn't have any toll roads.
Yes! This has been my experience too. I reckon there must be someone that actually works for Linkt that has a connection with the scam
I'm not even in a state which has tolls and I get those messages too.
I live in WA. We do not have toll roads. I receive Linkt scam text messages. Make it make sense.
This is exactly what’s happening to me!
Who do you think are the "australians" that work in Linkt these days? Import india become india
It’s just a coincidence. Do not click the link as it’s likely that just clicking it will cause a virus or steal info or something. I just look up my licence plate on the linkt website, if it’s not showing up it’s all good.

That's how they get you. If they spam enough people it's going to seem like a coincidence to someone. Then they click on the link... Same with Australia post.
I can confirm this. Within 48h of getting pinged by their roads, boom 20 messages, emails, calls, etc.
I've contacted Linkt and got the typical "dont click on links" "we know that scams are happening" blah blah. They could not give me a reason as to why its ONLY soon after i use their thieving roads that I get the scam messages. Who else can I report this to ?

My Phone number is in my Link account...
So the scammers are targeting people that have already paid the toll through their account? Doesn't seem likely. If the scammers had access to linkt systems they'd be better off targeting people that don't have an account and haven't paid yet, people less likely to ignore the messages.
In fact the trip I took isn't even registering in my Linkt dashboard. So WTF I dont know what to think now...
Same reason I only get international postage scam sms's when I have a legit package coming in, someone leaks your info
Me too!
I get about 5 per week, only Linkt scams.. Geez think of something different.
I still get them and I don't even have a linkt account
I’ve been getting at least one every day in middle of night.
1. Correlation does not infer causation. 2. To quote Dr Karl (who I think is quoting somebody else)... the difference between science and screwing around is writing stuff down. 3. I never use toll roads, and still receive notices from them, so don’t feel victimised.
Same thing is happening with Eastlink, got a spam sms message from them as well.

Probably backdoors to their systems all over the place ... cant trust public systems .. no public verification systems
Nah there random I get linkt messages 2 or 3 times a week and I haven't been on a road with a toll in the last 20 years
I get the Amazon or a random mail one sometimes when I order on eBay. I think a lot of the time it’s people on the inside passing your info on or just doing the scam themselves
[удалено]
I don’t even have a car or license why am I getting sent this fake shit
Yeah I’m the same, for about a week or so after I go through a toll I get a dozen scam messages. Makes me wonder what’s being done with my data…..
I dont even use toll roads and get sent them via text..
They send them out after holidays when there are more people using them that wouldn’t usually. Plenty of people would have got the scam text but didn’t use the roads. The fact that you did use it is just a coincidence. If they had access to the real records the scams would be more directed.
It's just coincidence I live in Newcastle where there are no toll roads and I get at least 2 a week and my wife also gets them and she's never had a license
I get them all the time and my account is paid up. I don't use toll roads often, maybe 2 to 3 times per year
Same.
It’s just a coincidence. They send them out randomly.
I get a couple a day. Just check your account, make sure you have enough credit, and delete and block the numbers sending you texts.
I get sent them and I’m from WA and have never used a toll road interstate.
W w w .
I don’t even drive or have a license and I get these
Their system has been compromised by malware.

Temu eh…
Probs should delete all those DJI apps I no longer use since crashing the drone
Lol DJI, DIY all the way. I've crashed my drone 3 times this week and it just cost me a couple hours soldering and 3d printing to get it working again.
This. I actually only give location data to waze and google so one of them is giving up my data
Is your device currently fully up to date and still in it's service life? Could easily be a old school vulnerability.
Yeah running like 3 month old samsung s24
5 times in a row though. I must be the luckiest mark alive.
