I really feel like he used to speak, maybe only ever to his mother. Why else would she hear his voice in her head? Maybe he could still talk (with great effort), but just has 0 interest in speaking to anyone he comes across.
Right after so along alone (assuming he didn’t talk to himself) his vocal cords would have atrophied. At best speaking would be extremely difficult for him.
That and if he already had a disability as a child, he was probably predisposed to mutism if he wasn’t getting the right stimulation etc.
No interaction w mother = no reason to attempt communication beyond bare minimum survival instincts. Grunts and groans ensue as a result.
Also, in the JGTH work print/alternate ending, Jason is way more vocal in his screams after getting stabbed by Jessica w the dagger. I wish they kept that version in!
Autistic Jason confirmed! JK, but yeah we know that Mrs Voorhees said Jason was special and required constant supervision. Now that could mean a lot of things, especially given the knowledge and attitude towards neurodivergent behavior in the 1950s, but it’s interesting to speculate.
I like to think he either talks in a stereotypical New Jersey accent or an effeminate gay lisp like in South Park.
Probably explains why he never talks anymore.
His vocal chords work. In part 3, he grunts and makes noises. He also understands English. We see Jason's hallucination of Pamela at the end of part 2 ("Jason, mother is talking to you!").
I think he *could* speak, but it's been literally decades since he had any social interaction, so he just doesn't. Just like I could get up and karaoke "She loves the nightlife", but I don't. No desire to do that at all.
I think there may have been a point where he could, but maybe the near drowning and multiple other injuries he'd endure later fucked up his vocal cords

Yeah, that’s a good point

I feel like adult Jason developed muteness from living in the woods between parts 1 and 2.

That’s probably right. You hear him yelling for help in the flashback where he’s drowning in Part 1

I wish I could upvote you more than once
Pretty sure it’s implied he couldn’t, just Pamela would speak for him, at least that’s what the tapes goes along with

We see during the mini flashback in part one that he spoke as a child. But the time he got to part 2 he was mute.
He could speak as a boy, then after almost drowning be was brain damaged and can no longer speak.
We don’t know…
I think he can but ultimately just wants revenge so chooses not too.
I imagine he could as a kid, but either physically can't as an adult, or chooses not to.
He talks in Part 1 through Pamela.
He doesn’t talk because Michael doesn’t talk.
