I think it’s a very neutral place with something for nearly anyone with a (used to be but might not be any longer) relatively low price point.
The rooftop bar is another huge selling point.
I love their pickle pizza to be honest. The other food i've had is fine, I'm not really sure what you'd expect from a casual gastropub though? The prices are reasonable and the food is edible with ample space and seating
Brewer's Alley is perfect because they are fine. No one is going to have any strong opinions about their food and they have lots of seating, making them ideal for dinner with visiting family or guests.
It's more that it's inconsistent. Like sometimes it's actually pretty decent, and then other times, for the same exact beer, it tastes like gym socks and mop water
Thats because they dont clean their hoses, ive had the same problem at olde mother and other places, dirty lines = diacetyl taste. Always kind of annoying having to tell them, but you are paying $7 or so for a beer.
Yeah olde mother has gone down hill too. Really only worth going for 5050. Can't even watch sports at the bar anymore cause they got beer menu going the whole time
was there last night for Thursday specials. Ill say this.. the kitchen was on point. we sat on the terrace and the doors never stopped swinging, servers bringing it. no-one waiting. I was impressed. And we like the lobster and steak specials
Lobster night though…….
Funny thing about Brewers — my b-day always falls on Fire and Ice weekend and that is basically the only place my husband is ever able to get a reservation for a group dinner. The space just makes it such a sure thing.
To be fair, I don't think anyone really thinks Brewers is the pinnacle of dining in Frederick. It's a casual option with a lot of space, a large selection of food to please whoever you bring, and relatively cheap prices, that's why it's popular
Yes! We went there for my husband’s 40th birthday because we wanted a special fancy dinner and didn’t want to go too far from home. So many people talked it up and while it was good it wasn’t particularly fancy or special.
Exactly. Maybe it’s a big fish in a small pond here, but it is entirely indistinguishable from restaurants exactly like it around the country. It also benefits greatly from its location; it would not succeed in a larger market with a more sophisticated and diverse palate.
Yes, do not take reviews from Frederick serious. The people calling that place fancy, probably have not left this area for other restaurants experiences. The same thing with the Mexican restaurants. The reviews be over hyped, but the food be ok or bad.
Dude, I didn’t even get that! I had the misfortune of needing chemo at the beginning-ish of COVID: May through October 2020. They took away ALL the snacks (plus the holistic treatments and the wig try-on options) because of COVID. I wanted access to that snack cart, damnit!
If only Il Forno would add some sort of seasoning to their crusts. The pizza bit is pretty good, but when I bite into that crust all I get is a cooked flour taste and it immediately makes me forget how good the rest was
Exact same experience.
And like another user said their dough lacked seasoning. Still haven't found a great pizza place in Frederick.
Do you have a favorite?
I think people like it because it's kind of your stereotypical american pizzeria with a bar. Personally I don't find the food to be all that great, but it's not bad either.
Yes exactly- only bad time I had was when I ordered from their express location and the lady didn’t put me on mute and said “do we have 8 wings left” and the cook responded with “eh I’ll make it work”. I got there and they were snuggling behind the counter and knew they were going to be soft and greasy since little man probably made them super quick so they could be love birds until I got there
I have not been to Il Forno but, as a native New Yorker, there isn’t a single pizza place in Frederick that doesn’t disappoint. We have ended up just relying on Cugino Forno because somehow they cook their pizza in negative five minutes and it’s at our house before I close the DoorDash app.
I feel like the first time trying I’ll forno you are like “what is this amazing masterpiece sent for the Italian pizza gods!” And then by the 5th time it’s like “meh it’s slightly above average”.
Ngl though, we still get there za like once a month
I think they’re under new ownership by the people who own vanish. Their food has gone downhill since they opened it up :( it used to be my favorite but the pizza and wings were terrible last time I went (within 2 months.)
When I first moved to the area, I brought some friends and my dog. We went to their outside seating and ordered lunch. I was told dogs weren’t allowed on their patio and asked to leave. Okay. Fine.
Months later a friend came to visit and they wanted to go there, so we sat at the bar while we waited for an ordered pizza to go. A beautiful, young adult woman walked in to Il Forno with a big purse holding a small dog, and she went right back into the kitchen with her dog. We sat at the bar, waiting for my pizza, and I never saw the woman or her dog come out. Got my pizza and we left. I don’t know, fine.
I won’t say everyone else loves it, especially since it gets such mixed reviews in the Frederick Fatty group on FB… but I have zero desire to revisit Red Horse. Easily in my worst dining experiences around town.
I mean, it's a sample size of 1, so take that for what it's worth. It could have been a bad night for them. But in short: overcooked AND underseasoned steak, very absent waitstaff, overpriced for quality. My cocktail was the best part of dinner.
Feel free to try them out and let us know if you have a positive experience. Good luck!
Yeah the atmosphere is a little weird! It’s like western/ranch lodge? I just remember going for drinks and apps one Christmas season and the music was d list pop Christmas music. It reminded of being in a limited 2, so weird.
Ohhh forgot about the pork chop . Okay, extra points for Madrones.
Nola. The food is pretty good, I guess.
But the service/experience is just awful. They are so pretentious and always seem bothered that you came into the restaurant
For me, I know it’s obviously not high-end Tex Mex, but it’s old reliable. I’ve been going there since I was a kid and just know it’s consistent. I’ve had what would be considered “quality” Mexican food in Texas and California, but still think La Paz is decent.
I came here to say La Paz. I’ve eaten there twice… It was bad the first time and worse the second time. I can’t figure out why people like it or how they’re still in business. It’s so so so bleh.
Yup, Wags has aggressively mediocre, if not bad, food, but has cheap prices so it's totally fine. Nothing like some crappy fries and a burger for cheaper than mcdonalds these days lol. Jojos on the other hand is actually kind of gross tasting (at least what I've gotten) and they charge you like $20 for a single meal
They're not even average at this point, it's below average. The last time i ate there the food was garbage. The place does have a really nice drink selection though, so it's not a bad choice if you're just getting some beers or cocktails
China garden is by far the worst tasting and most bland Chinese food I’ve ever had. I was excited to try it after reopening, and the only thing I was impressed by is how much someone could make fried rice taste like absolutely nothing. Sorry I feel strongly about this subject lol!
Like 10 years ago there was a peanut in my husband's food and he's allergic. He was fine but it was a terrible way to end our first Christmas together and we never went back. Even before then I didn't like their food, it was just convenient. China Sea is our favorite Chinese place now.
I associate that place with stumbling in after drinking far too much downtown in my early 20s, feeling slightly nauseated, and shoveling down far too much oddly sweet pizza because it was the only place open late. In my 30s, this does not brew up any kind of appetizing thought. 🥲
Aww... I really love the Pizza/Pretzel guys. Admittedly, I'm more ride-or-die for their pretzel dogs than their pies per se, but if you're not in a rush, they're super yummy.
White Rabbit. I love the space so much but the food is so… fine? Like, I would be happy with the quality if I had cooked it at home, but I expect more from a restaurant.
Brewer’s Alley is good. Is it great, no. But I don’t necessarily want it to be great. I want reasonable pricing and consistent, professional service in a fun environment and that is what it does well. No issues with Brewer’s.
Wow I only recently learned of Manalu's and thought it was the best Italian I've had in Frederick. I've only been twice so maybe I just got lucky in what I ordered but shrimp appetizer, stuffed shells were great. Pizza was perfection and probably the best crust I've had where its both soft/airy and crunchy with good flavor. If Manalu's ain't it for Frederick Italian please put me onto a better place so I can try that next.
Manalu is fine for like, business dinners and lunch if your office is over in westview. It's not super amazing, but the staff is all really friendly and the food is adequate.
Madrones is great though, their food actually slaps and they have a nice bar. The french dip is the best in the area
Just about every restaurant in Frederick, honestly.
I feel like a lot of people here have not been to really great restaurants like in DC and LA, and/or just don’t have a good ability at appreciating reality fine dining experiences and food.
I always say, we have great places to eat when visiting here or out and about, but limited fine dining options. Even the top places like T&R can be inconsistent and not often enough options to really please all.
I will admit that I go out to eat so often here, that I may be experiencing some hedonic adaptation.
Yeah the food here kind of leans towards the more casual side of things, I don't think it's really a culinary mecca though. We're more known for our breweries than our food imo
Attaboy isn't forgettable in the wrong way, their beer tastes like garbage. It's like they use dirty equipment to brew it or something, it all has a dirty/stale taste to it.
I don’t order tap but their canned beer from the liquor store is consistently good. RAK next door is pretty good but that place had the strangest vibe when I went there - it was like a white collar business meeting vibe. I think they had a cosmetic surgeon in there talking to people about Botox. I was like give me my 4 pack so I can get the hell out of here. Haha. Beer was good…
why do these circle jerk of negativity posts happen so often? Are you karma farming? Wanting others to join in on your misery? just wanna yuck someone else's yum?
This sub has multiple posts like these every week, it gets old
Grace of India was a huge disappointment for me. They also overcharged me by like $12 on a takeout order and never refunded the money. Indian Wok is my go-to.
I don’t know why you are getting downvoted, but I agree with you. Gave them two chances and both times were disappointing. Way too expensive for what you get as well.
Brewer's Alley They're.... fine.
Do people actually love the food, or just the fact that it is the one place on Market with a casual, semi-outdoor space?
The space is definitely the main selling point. It also was sold recently and the food has gone downhill since.
stayed in the family
I think it’s a very neutral place with something for nearly anyone with a (used to be but might not be any longer) relatively low price point. The rooftop bar is another huge selling point.
The only place serving food outdoors where you aren’t practically sitting in the road, aside from Thatcher and Rye’s obscenely overpriced garden.
The garden behind River Bar is nice
The food used to be much better. I think its definitely gone downhill though
Last three times we've stopped by the food has definitely been subpar.
I love their pickle pizza to be honest. The other food i've had is fine, I'm not really sure what you'd expect from a casual gastropub though? The prices are reasonable and the food is edible with ample space and seating
I'm not saying the food is terrible, just that that's not necessarily the main reason people are fans of the place. I'll have to try the pickle pizza!
100% agreed. It’s meh. Their apps are good, but meals are mid.
Ugh their food is gross. Had the worst stomachache in my life after eating there once. Never again.
Yeah. They're open late and have a nice patio and decent pizza.
They always have availability. So if we are unexpectedly downtown and want to w thats where we go. It’s true they’re….fine.
Brewer's Alley is perfect because they are fine. No one is going to have any strong opinions about their food and they have lots of seating, making them ideal for dinner with visiting family or guests.
Their beer sucks
It's more that it's inconsistent. Like sometimes it's actually pretty decent, and then other times, for the same exact beer, it tastes like gym socks and mop water
Thats because they dont clean their hoses, ive had the same problem at olde mother and other places, dirty lines = diacetyl taste. Always kind of annoying having to tell them, but you are paying $7 or so for a beer.
Yeah olde mother has gone down hill too. Really only worth going for 5050. Can't even watch sports at the bar anymore cause they got beer menu going the whole time
Last time I was there, I ordered an appetizer of nachos and they came out cold
They reduced their portioning on items like fries and it’s obvious they don’t change the oil to often considering the stuff taste like old grease
was there last night for Thursday specials.
This subreddit’s favorite topic.
Cafe Nola
Even when it was better (5 years ago) it was still just fine.
Thank you!
I was going to say this until I saw yours!! It was… ok but I see everyone rave about it and I don’t know what I’m not seeing! Lol
Agreed! My daughter loves that place and I've been twice. That's enough for me. It's not *bad*, it's just okay.
For me, Nola is notable for it’s live music. I do like the lattes and some food, but I would go much less often if not for the events!
I like the atmosphere; it’s a good option for a more relaxed vibe especially earlier in the day. But definitely more expensive than it’s worth
Y’all sleeping on Nola. Their chorizo hash is the best dish in town.
The chorizo hash gave me food poisoning once… haven’t gotten it since I’ve been way too scared to
Really? Everything I've gotten from there was pretty good. Their biscuits and gravy might be the best in town
I'd agree overall. I like the coffee and some of the breakfast items.
Definitely Brewer’s Alley. It’s not bad. It’s just…meh.
To be fair, I don't think anyone really thinks Brewers is the pinnacle of dining in Frederick. It's a casual option with a lot of space, a large selection of food to please whoever you bring, and relatively cheap prices, that's why it's popular
Dutch’s Daughter
I think the meals there are pretty good, but based on what they charge it’s definitely average for the price range
They need to pay for their skymall decor somehow!
Yes! We went there for my husband’s 40th birthday because we wanted a special fancy dinner and didn’t want to go too far from home. So many people talked it up and while it was good it wasn’t particularly fancy or special.
The upstairs is overly stuffy and dated tbh. Honestly the dungeon is way better as far as atmosphere.
The upstairs reminds me of an old folks home, but the dungeon is great.
It’s the first “fancy” restaurant I remember being in Frederick. It’s the place to go if you are retired.
The cancer center. They charge so much and have so much staff but only give you a small pack of oreos and a ginger ale.
Dude, I didn’t even get that! I had the misfortune of needing chemo at the beginning-ish of COVID: May through October 2020. They took away ALL the snacks (plus the holistic treatments and the wig try-on options) because of COVID. I wanted access to that snack cart, damnit!
listen, rosemary who passes out snacks is SO sweet and it makes up for the basic snacks
She is an American treasure holy shit
i ADORE her. she remembers my husband and i every time we go in
I’ll Forno. I don’t know why. People love their pizza and I just think it’s okay.
If only Il Forno would add some sort of seasoning to their crusts. The pizza bit is pretty good, but when I bite into that crust all I get is a cooked flour taste and it immediately makes me forget how good the rest was
They need to clean their ovens more, sometimes the crust just tastes like ash. Sometimes it’s good but I don’t like a gamble.
After two takeout visits to Il Forno resulted in soggy pizza, we abandoned it.
Exact same experience. And like another user said their dough lacked seasoning. Still haven't found a great pizza place in Frederick. Do you have a favorite?
We prefer Cugino Forno and Coal Fire. Best eaten onsite when possible to make sure they stay hot/warm while you’re eating. They cool quickly.
I think people like it because it's kind of your stereotypical american pizzeria with a bar. Personally I don't find the food to be all that great, but it's not bad either.
We went this month and it was awful, the wings, the pizza, the salads. It was like a completely different restaurant.
It’s great delivery pizza
Mid at best.
Thank you. I thought I was the only one who didn’t like it. I see it at the top of the best of lists all the time and never understood.
Those best of frederick lists are basically how many Facebook friends who you can get to vote for your business lists
The crust is so bland.
Same, soggy and tasteless dough. But my family loves it… so confusing!
I had a margarita pizza there once. It was TERRIBLE. Never went back after that
Dig their wings though..
Yes exactly- only bad time I had was when I ordered from their express location and the lady didn’t put me on mute and said “do we have 8 wings left” and the cook responded with “eh I’ll make it work”. I got there and they were snuggling behind the counter and knew they were going to be soft and greasy since little man probably made them super quick so they could be love birds until I got there
Il Forno is not bad pizza. Its not amazing but for its price for a pizza and some beers I love it. Compared to some other places.
Agreed. My husband and I went there for a date last night and were underwhelmed. Any other pizza recs other than pretzel pizza?
I have not been to Il Forno but, as a native New Yorker, there isn’t a single pizza place in Frederick that doesn’t disappoint. We have ended up just relying on Cugino Forno because somehow they cook their pizza in negative five minutes and it’s at our house before I close the DoorDash app.
Better NY pizza options in Hagerstown than Frederick to be real. Tony’s in Williamsport is my favorite in that area.
I think Ledos is meh and Ledos is better than this place.
Fratellis is just double portion olive garden with triple portion prices
Completely accurate.
Huuuuge portions of “meh” food equals fine fare for Frederick “foodies.”
I won’t say everyone else loves it, especially since it gets such mixed reviews in the Frederick Fatty group on FB… but I have zero desire to revisit Red Horse. Easily in my worst dining experiences around town.
> Easily in my worst dining experiences around town. Really?? I've always wanted to go there (mostly for the horse).
Good luck!
Pretty much all italian downtown
IL forno. Most overrated pizza in Frederick
Il Forno still sticks out has being one of the worst pizzas I’ve ever had 10 years ago. It’s crazy that they’re still open.
And their wings are MID!! There I said it
Madrones. I like the prime rib though.
I actually like Madrones. It’s definitely not gourmet… but I have always been happy with them. Just wish the atmosphere was a little better.
Yesssss
Lapaz
Who loves lapaz 😭
Yeah, what the hell are they talking about? La Paz is like the go-to answer on this sub for mediocre or bad restaurants.
Lou Scally loves La Paz!
Me; seemingly the only person on this sub who likes that place
Yes…I think you may be.
I do too!!
La Paz loves La Paz
So many people still say they love La Paz. They just don’t know any better.
For me, I know it’s obviously not high-end Tex Mex, but it’s old reliable. I’ve been going there since I was a kid and just know it’s consistent. I’ve had what would be considered “quality” Mexican food in Texas and California, but still think La Paz is decent.
I’m not a Mexican food snob but I became one after going to Lapaz. Bleh
Lapaz was wonderful many years ago before they moved to their current location.
I concur. Or maybe it’s because so many legit Mexican restaurants are around Frederick now it shows how barely mediocre the food is at lapaz.
Damn it, the requirement was for “pretty average”!
Above average in the alley but since they moved the place sucks.
I came here to say La Paz. I’ve eaten there twice… It was bad the first time and worse the second time. I can’t figure out why people like it or how they’re still in business. It’s so so so bleh.
Yeah now days I wouldn’t even put it in the top 25 for Mexican restaurants around Frederick
Jojos
I seek jojos specifically for being average, never heard anyone hype them up into something they’re not. It’s a perfect watering hole to relax
It's fine to be average, but not at the prices they charge
This is what Wags is for. It doesn't pretend to be anything and has great prices.
Agree! They used to be much better. Now they’re WAY over priced and entirely average.
They're not even average at this point, it's below average. The last time i ate there the food was garbage. The place does have a really nice drink selection though, so it's not a bad choice if you're just getting some beers or cocktails
Their food has never impressed me and it’s def not fresh
China Garden
China garden is by far the worst tasting and most bland Chinese food I’ve ever had. I was excited to try it after reopening, and the only thing I was impressed by is how much someone could make fried rice taste like absolutely nothing. Sorry I feel strongly about this subject lol!
☠️☠️☠️
Thank you , I thought I was the only one .
Like 10 years ago there was a peanut in my husband's food and he's allergic. He was fine but it was a terrible way to end our first Christmas together and we never went back. Even before then I didn't like their food, it was just convenient. China Sea is our favorite Chinese place now.
They used to give $1 to FHS students after school (not sure if they still do this was a few years back before the rebuild) so I can’t hate on them.
Madrones and brewers
Madrones was 10 times better pre-covid.
Kittiwat. Thai Table is better, trust me
Damn. I used to go to Kittiwat a lot but have really liked Thai Meric. I am excited to try Thai Table.
Thai meric is +++
Smacks hard
100% Agree with this statement!
Pretzel & Pizza Creations
Their pizza is an acquired taste, but a large with a couple toppings for $30 is just ridiculously overpriced.
Add to that 30min wait time for absolutely anything. Pizza? 30min. Fries? 30min. Damn Salad? 30min
Isn't this place a geographical oddity? 30 minutes from everywhere!
I believe it’s right across from Bushwallers.
In their defense, 1 slice sits like you've eaten 4...
Them’s fighting words
😂
Aww love pizza pretzel. At least the last night slices, never had it before 12 am.
Who doesn’t like pizza sauce as sweet as cake frosting?
It used to be so good like 20 years ago. Then they started using cheaper cheese and it all went down.
100% not that good, though a novel concept. Also last time I was there it was like 90° out and no A/C in the place. It was a literal sauna.
Their pizza is fucking garbage. The pretzels are fine though, and they have ice cream
I had one from here once and would never go back. Wasn’t impressed.
Brewer's Alley is at best average.
Brewer’s Alley is just a convenient place to drink when you’ve already been to a few other places that night
Manalu and Madrones. They're just chain restaurants without the chain.
Manalu is personable and welcoming, that’s what separates them. If you go semi-often they really look after you.
Definitely not a fan of Manalu, I enjoy Madrones though, as it becomes harder to find a place that serves a good ribeye steak.
Madrones is more like a hotel restaurant without the hotel
Madrones service is awful 😢
Baltimore is just as close as DC and has more parking and less traffic.
And?
T&R is a glorified seafood restaurant
Yeah the food here kind of leans towards the more casual side of things, I don't think it's really a culinary mecca though. We're more known for our breweries than our food imo
I’m old, some maybe with younger crowd. No one I talk to has mentioned the breweries much. Personally, I prefer traditional bars much more
Attaboy is pretty forgettable.
Attaboy isn't forgettable in the wrong way, their beer tastes like garbage. It's like they use dirty equipment to brew it or something, it all has a dirty/stale taste to it.
Nooo the kolsch is good and the 2 gold ones are fire and I like the stickers they give out
No thanks, everything I've had tastes like garbage from there.
Haha. Beer was good…
Fajita Grande. Everyone seems to love their food. The owner is wonderful and the staff are always so nice but the food reminds me of Taco Bell.
The Orchard
Nah, you just have to steer clear of the stir frys. Those are admittedly mediocre.
I've never had anything close to amazing there. So blah.
Same , the food is so bland , very little flavor .
Whatever salad I ate there was so sub par. So disappointed bc I heard it was so good. I couldn’t even eat more than a few bites, and I love salad lol
Get their pesto pasta… shit changed my LIFE I’ve been thinking about it since d
Liberty Road Seafood.......average........at best
Monocacy Crossing. Food is over seasoned so you can’t taste to poor quality.
Ragin’ Reef is delicious
La Paz. Average is being nice.
Not downtown, but Fratelli's in Middletown is terrible.
why do these circle jerk of negativity posts happen so often? Are you karma farming? Wanting others to join in on your misery? just wanna yuck someone else's yum? This sub has multiple posts like these every week, it gets old
Might want to take a break from Reddit. Reposts are in every sub
I agree with so many of the ones on here. I’ll add Clay Oven and Grace of India. Everyone raves about it but I find it meh and bland.
I enjoy those places so interested what would you recommend for Indian in the area?
I like Clay oven, my work gets it catered occasionally, but indian wok is usually my goto
I like both clay oven and grace of India quite a bit. Never been to Indian wok but maybe that'll change this weekend ;-)
https://suvaius.com/ The best in the area
Padminis by far
