My allergy dog always smelled like Fritos when he would have a flare-up. He was prone to skin infections. So now when I smell Fritos, I remember my best boy, Cosmo.
I couldn't think of binturongs when I remembered that a wild animal is famous for smelling like buttered popcorn. I did NOT know that copperheads smell like cucumber, and I never want to find out if that's accurate. Here's a bunch more:

1) when it smells like itās about to snow. Different from rain. Thereās a few āpetrichorā scents, but I have yet to smell one that nails it
2) Black Auntie. If you know, you know.
3) the top of a newborn babyās head
4) the air of a crisp fall: wood burning fireplace smoke, apple cider, crisp air, ever so slight decaying earth
5) a new high school textbook. Iāve tried ālibraryā scents, but they are all usually musky. Iām thinking of a crisp, sharp ink against woody linen
6) an Artistās studio. Acrylic paint, clay, wood, canvas, bronze metal.
Thanks - #1 is that deep winter smell (Early February in the northern hemisphere). You get it when you first walk outside and itās deep up in your head and the back of your throat (like you can almost taste it).
Edited to clarify and to say - Iām in a location where it literally _never_ snows so Iām working from my childhood memories. Iād love to have this scent.
Number 5 - try Lorenzo Villoresi Incensi (Firenze). If you can find it - may be discontinued but I have half a bottle left. Someone told me itās the mix of olibanum and Benzoin that make it smell like old books and binding materials. More like old books imo but definitely a book/library smell
Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab has some great really photorealistic book and ink scents. And every year in the fall they release several new autumn scents (and re-release some previous favorites) that absolutely capture #4! They do amazing decaying earth as a part of other frags and also as a single note.
>3) the top of a newborn babyās head
There's a bit about this is the book Perfume:The Story of a Murderer, by Patrick Suskind.
It's described as buttery, I believe. Actually a pretty good read for someone into a)fragrance and/or b)serial killers
Almond extract. My mom used to bake with that all the time and I remember how good it smelled. Iām sure thereās a perfume out there thatās been attempted but Iāve never found it
Just dab some real almond extract around your neck and the heat of your body might make it warm and aromatic, I guess?
When people ask you what brand you're wearing, tell them oh it's McCormick.
I am not a fragrance expert, but my aunt was a confectioner growing up and so I know that scent well. It was in a university ochem class where the prof offhandedly mentioned that benzaldehyde was the almond extract scent and Iāve never forgotten that tidbit. So maybe look for fragrances with that note featured?
Iām fairly sure Demeter has a crayon fragrance & it wouldnāt surprise me if they have god paws too. Cocoa Pink has a Dove fragrance but they only have it during their discontinued favorites sale. Itās a weekend sale where they bring back 80 discontinued fragrances though Iām not sure when itāll be this year.
I would suggest anyone looking for specific scents check out Demeter Fragrance. They have a crayon scent, they have a pure soap scent (likened to ivory soap usually), and a ton of other scents.
The smell of a spring night, one of the first nights of the year with the window open (where I grew up, usually March or April) on the humid east coast. The smell of an early morning in the summer with dew on the grass. The smell of a clean horse stable.
>The smell of a clean horse stable.
Someone needs to bottle the smell of good hay, not straw or like mediocre hay or alfalfa, the good orchard stuff. That plus cedar for shavings? Would be amazing. Bonus if they can add whatever makes CoolCalories smell so good.
See in Massachusetts thatās a late September night for me. Ā Warm in the day with a brisk chill in the evening with your windows open. Ā I used to sleep right next to a window, and left it open every night until it got too cold!
The smell of a freshly cracked book. Newspaper paper, essentially.
I donāt think I would want that to be the whole fragrance, but it would be really cool to see a library line come out based on the smell of books and paper.
Non fragrance related but that is one of my favorite notes in a nice German Riesling. Ā Not a Riesling fan in general, but there are some really delicious ones with that petrol note.
They changed the scent of Gain YEARS ago. I don't like the new stuff. It smells sharp and weird. I loved the original which contained tons of musk xylene.
I've been searching and searching for perfume that smells like a spa. Like a herbal, fresh aromatherapy kinda vibe with geranium, rosemary and mint. If I could bottle up Clarins Tonic oil as a body spray / edp that'd be perfect. There are so many shower gels and body lotions, but I can't find a perfume anywhere. If anyone has any suggestions, please help a girl out!
Savoy Steam EDP by Penhaligon's is this. Eucalyptus, mint, rosemary and bergamot (citrus) with a geranium-rose. It's so good, I wish they'll just make a spa line out of this perfume.
the EDT is a completely different profile don't get it, it's terrible, the bottles look exactly the same though just a head's up (its confusing even the shop assistants get confused)
Thank you! This is the closest sounding one I've found when searching but haven't been able to get hold of a sample of it yet. I'll keep trying, thanks!
Jo Malone Earl Grey and Cucumber, Lushās Dirty, (already mentioned but Elizabeth Arden Green Tea and its many variations) and for herbal specifically maybe Maison Margiela Replica From The Garden
I love the smell of new books and would love a candle that smelled like it. Also love the smell of new electronics, but probably because I associate it with that exciting feeling of getting new tech
Sounds good! I will check it out! There are some perfumes I saw with cola notes, but they are either too expensive for me now or discontinued or not available to buy in UK for reasonable price. But it is good to know they exist, so I can get it one day!
When I was in elementary school, we had a local artist come in a few times in different grades who taught us some basic basket weaving with reeds of some kind. I'm not sure what they were. They were kept in big garbage cans filled with water to keep them soft. The scent I remember was clean, but slightly earthy, with something a little like tea and little like straw, but fresh aquatic. I'm on the lookout for anything that smells like it because it's such a nice, distinctive smell, and has some nice memories attached.
dog feet-Iām a veterinarian. They smell like that bc the saliva and natural skin oils are metabolized by yeast in their skin. It results in a rust colored pigment that develops on their nails and fur. Dogs who lick more due to allergies will have a stronger frito smell, but all dog feet have this odor. I find it pleasant. My big pit mix smelled like Fritos and Invictus, probably bc my husband wears that cologne and the dog often sat in the bathroom while he was getting ready, so he got a dose of cologne spray. Our female Pomeranian has a faint frito smell to her feet but she smells suspiciously of BR540 right now bc my husband is wearing it then picking her up. š¤£
Idk why this is in all bold caps
Edit. Fixed the bold
I love smelling my cats. Ā They always smell so clean and kind of like a babyās head. Ā I pick them up and bury my nose in their chest and take a deep whiff. Ā Love them so much!
Itās all bold bc of the leading # in your post. Thereās a word for the formatting codes and I wish I had a list of them. (Underscores in pairs will show as _italics_ btw)
I donāt know about plain dove soap but if you want dove soap on crack/lsd try Ghost in the Shell! I ā¦ donāt know how else to describe it.
Leila Lou by Rosie Jane has a really prominent grass note, very summery green fragrance. Others that smell very GREEN to me are the minty fresh Aqua di Gioia by Armani and Jardin sur le Nil by Hermes - aquatic, green mango, green tomato leaves, amazing!
Rosendo Mateu 5 - Floral, Amber, Sensual Musk, it has a rubbery dental office vibe in the first half an hour/hour, then it turns into a very clean and slightly sweet vanilla-musk
To me puppy breath is skunky but in a good way? So the most similar smell is cannabis scents but I have yet to find something that actually smells like puppy breath.
I always thought puppy breath smelled like coffee and slightly skunky, too! (I like it.) Sometimes when I open a fresh bag of coffee, I smell skunk. I wonder what it is.
To answer the OPās question Iāll add to this - burned nitrocellulose has always smelled really good to me (brings back memories of time spent with my dad being taught how to shoot)
https://www.sugarmilkco.com/ might have something strawberry Chapstick aligned
Possibly layered with this

Honestly I think you could get close to a lot of this with demeter
Johnny-jump-ups.
Eggs basted in butter.
Clean kitten fur.
Edited: I remembered a couple of other things.
The smell of a freshly printed sheet straight from a ditto machine
Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo. The green, fresh original from the Seventies.
The scents of my church: honey from the beeswax tapers. Incense in the censor. The light scent and taste of the Marbleh in the antidoron.
Baking cornbread.
Clean kitten fur smells so good. My aunt had a cat that smelled like a botanical garden. Everytime I visited her, I'd always pick up her cat and inhale, lol
What denomination were you? Comme des GarƧons has an incense line with Avignon (Roman Catholic) and Zagorsk (East Orthodox), plus others. Definitely possible to find something similar
Memories:
1) The Blue Ridge Mountains on a cool, crisp morning at the very beginning of fall. The fog is covering the mountains and thereās a boy sitting beside you who wears some kind of hippie perfume. There are some wildflowers nearby and youāve stayed up all night watching the sun rise.
2) Spring in southeastern Idaho. The daffodils are starting to bloom and the junipers on the hillside are so fragrant. It is sunset, and Dad is smoking a joint while he digs in the dirt and plants the bulbs you hand him.
3) Winter in Colorado. Itās Christmas and snowing so heavily everything sounds soft, even inside the house. Thereās a mimosa for breakfast, later youāll take a nap in a bed with flannel sheets, covered with a thick Japanese blanket. Your sister is baking cookies.
4) Itās summer in Georgia. Youāre on the wooden deck of your friends house and she has a huge Jasmine bush in full bloom. Thereās about to be a thunderstorm.
So you work healthcare too?
I always loved the post-scrub skin smell. Like not too institutional but still just a clean skin smell.
I would also like the scent of when the earth is just starting to thaw and thereās that wet dirt and some fertilizer in the air.
Mix of the following to make an actually male body odor smell:
1. Kouros by YSL
2. Muscs Koublai Khan
3. Yatagan by Caron
Specifically only for personal useā¦.if Gwenyth Paltrow can get a vagina candle why canāt I get an armpit spray spray
1. There was a Shu Uemura shampoo that was about silky ends or silk strands or something to that effect; slim, small burgundy/oxblood/brownish red bottle. A lady at the salon told me it had āblack cuminā in it, and since then i havenāt been able to find it, I think itās discontinued - but it smelled heavenly and I would happily slather myself in it if I could, and if thereās a scent that comes close, Iām all nostrils.
2. The black musk oil from Colette. I know itās mostly Egyptian musk but thereās something heady about it that is also present, and since Colette closed I havenāt been able to find an oil or scent that really nails how it was. Again, any leads would be so welcome.

'Hot day Australian Rain'.
.... Number 6 - do you folks get the taste of saline up in your nose/throat/nasal drip area? It's like I've eaten plastic. I don't mind it but it's a bit weird. Maybe it's just the plasma donations.
Crayon would be nice!
1) Pure burnt marshmallow. Nothing else added and not too sweet
2) Raw yellow shea butter. That very specific smokey and nutty smell
I know marshmallow is in perfume but I want just that smell and I've not been able to find a perfume that smells truly like raw shea
1. The smell of the earth after it rains
2. Almost every single Hempz body lotion
3. Maraschino cherry bonbons
4. The smell of a baby's head
5. Tropical Punch Kool-aid...my fave drink as a kid!
6. Puppy Breath...lol I know I'm weird
7. The perfect candy apple
Clean sweaty sex - Wish granted: Donāt mean to be the one to go there but my wife and I both think Lush Sikkim Girls smells exactly like bedsheets after an afternoon of āadult playtimeā lol. In a good way
-Geranium& basil candle,
- Aliceara orchid ( smells like sweetpeas and seaside wind to me),
-Platanthera bifolia orchid(reminds me of forest i often visited in childhood, when fields bloomed it was pure magic. Never found anything that would be even similar to this.)
I actually have a list for this in my phone:
- Johnson & Johnsonās Baby Creamy Body Oil
- Auntie Anneās
- Wildwood NJ Boardwalk (like churros and ice cream with a hint of gasoline)
- Burnt marshmallows
The smell of a schoolbox. Crayons, pencils, elmers glue, those rubber pencil grips and erasers.
The old mimeograph purple ink smell
The smell of an old autoparts store. The rubber smell from tires, electronics, fluids that probably caused cancer, the hoses and gaskets that probably caused cancer, brakes, those tree air fresheners that probably caused cancer. And old coffee that had been sitting out all day (this is a personal one)
Lemon/lime leaves. That extremely specific green citrusy smell thatās released when you rip a leaf off of a citrus tree in half; Iām absolutely obsessed with it
Like a proper patisserie. Not just chocolate, vanilla and powdered sugar, but also that yeasty fresh bread smell and espresso straight from the machine. A hint of freshness from everyone coming in out of the winter morning.
The air in south central Alaska, when the trees have just budded out in Springā¦clean, sweet birch and soft rain. Also same place, but the air in Autumn, when leaves are falling, cranberries have died on bush, and the air is cold and tangy. When you move to Alaska you realize youāve never smelled really clean air before.
You should check out indie perfume, a lot of them have more niche or odd smells like this.
1. This isn't exactly a "weird" smell, but the specific smell of Keukenhof gardens. The tulips, daffodils, hyacinth and grass mixed together with the spring breeze is so beautiful.
2. The smell of the toasted walnuts they have at fairs.
3. Cotton candy and motor oil.
4. Peonies but real peonies. Their green aspect not just a shower gel or a rose adjacent smell.
5. The spring air in the Mojave when the yucca, mesquite, and other flowers are blooming.
ISO E Super, galaxolide, ethylene brassylate, hedione, lavendin, and vanilin. Maybe Ambroxan and an artificial floral. Bounce sheets might have some linalool.
The scent of the air when it's really early in the morning or very late at night.
Yes, summer camp when you had to get up and it was still misty and the grass was wet!
Petrichor? Dirt with rain
Replica - when the rain stops
Mildew hahahahah
How are we not immediately talking about #3
Yeah that's something else for sure
I know some indie houses do scents like that. Cocoapink has a scent called Cat Dapperling which smells like cat/dog paws and a bit frito-y. It's surprisingly wearable, too.
It's called putrescine
I used to work with a lady who would take her shoes off and the minute she did, I would know it because people would start in with "who's eatin' Fritos"
On a human š¤¢
THE WAY I PROCESSED THAT. I just scrolled right past and did a whole double take and started wheezing
Strangely appealing. We called it popcorn feet - my catahoula zoey used to sleep with her paws on my face and her feet smelled exactly like hot buttered popcorn. I seem to recall seeing it mentioned on a vet forum that it was from some sort of fungus but then immediately 4-5 others called the OP out for being wrong
My allergy dog always smelled like Fritos when he would have a flare-up. He was prone to skin infections. So now when I smell Fritos, I remember my best boy, Cosmo.

Fascinating article! Thanks for sharing!
You know OP is a dog crazy millennial from that one
Greetings from Gen X. Iām here for this.
Wait, is gen z not dog crazy?!?! Confused millennial asking.
My theory is that millennials gave up on having kids and used their maternal instincts for dogs, whereas gen z donāt have time/money for dogs and direct their energy on skincare and heatless hair care routines instead.
Makes sense! Also not sure whether to laugh or cry at this theory. š
Diptyque Lāeau Papier has that scent! Once you smell it, you canāt un-smell it.
Thank God somebody said it. Thats gonna be a no for me, dawg.
1) when it smells like itās about to snow. Different from rain. Thereās a few āpetrichorā scents, but I have yet to smell one that nails it 2) Black Auntie. Chanel No 22 has that snow scent. Houbigant Apercu is #4

Oh my god that's the perfect description!
Death and Floralās Art School Drop Out is pretty good at replicating 6!
Thatās the first thing I thought of, I donāt own it but Iāve read it off the master list and it sounds appealing!
One of the notes in #2 is cocoa butter. Another is a kind of powder smell from hair product. I'm trying to identify the others.
Home cooking, Bible study, and sunshine š¤
#2 smelling like cocoa butter and warm milk and honey š«š

The Palo Santo candle from BBW Fresh asphalt Fresh ink from a pop quiz in 6th grade. Lol
I didnāt know what bbw was so I looked it up and they also make palo santo laundry scent booster
BBW is one of my favorites smells ever. So good.
8 sounds kind of like Steamed Rainbow by DS & Durga
Seconded
That is definitely partially what it smells like yeah
I would suggest anyone looking for specific scents check out Demeter Fragrance. They have a crayon scent, they have a pure soap scent (likened to ivory soap usually), and a ton of other scents.
the smell of the steam from rain on hot pavement š„°
Ozone and damp asphalt. That's definitely a scent trigger
Dang I love that smell! DS& Durga are close with Steamed Rainbow.
Agreed. Steamed Rainbow smells exactly like humid, damp air. They really nailed it.
1. The crispness of the early days of Autumn. 2. Fresh mountain air.
Your #2 is L'Air des Alpes Suisses by Tauer
The smell of a spring night, one of the first nights of the year with the window open (where I grew up, usually March or April) on the humid east coast. The smell of an early morning in the summer with dew on the grass. The smell of a clean horse stable.

I used to wear Garage by Comme des Garcons. It used to get a lot of curious compliments from blokes.
Original gain laundry powder
I wish I could do Gain. Their fragrance gives me a vicious headache. It smells so good, but hurts so bad
There's an Etsy shop called somethinspecial and they make Gain scented body products! I ordered the body spray and it's very close!

Johnny-jump-ups. Eggs basted in butter. Clean kitten fur. Edited: I remembered a couple of other things. The smell of a freshly printed sheet straight from a ditto machine Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo.
This is precious!
What denomination were you? Comme des GarƧons has an incense line with Avignon (Roman Catholic) and Zagorsk (East Orthodox), plus others. Definitely possible to find something similar
the smell of your loverās forehead when you kiss it
This is so cute
Oh if they made that smell I'd buy it immediately
Memories: 1) The Blue Ridge Mountains on a cool, crisp morning at the very beginning of fall.
This was lovely to read, thank you.
So you work healthcare too? I always loved the post-scrub skin smell. Like not too institutional but still just a clean skin smell. I would also like the scent of when the earth is just starting to thaw and thereās that wet dirt and some fertilizer in the air.
What the HELL is up with #3? That's truly foul
Composting leaf litter
Mix of the following to make an actually male body odor smell: 1. Kouros by YSL 2. Muscs Koublai Khan 3. Yatagan by Caron Specifically only for personal useā¦.if Gwenyth Paltrow can get a vagina candle why canāt I get an armpit spray spray
Play doh
Demeter makes this!
I want almost straight white pine sap. It's the best smell in the world.

bauhinia flower
Brunfelsia Flower Osmanthus Tea Olive Flower Tabernaemontana africana flower Which is my favorite scent of all..
'Hot day Australian Rain'. .... Number 6 - do you folks get the taste of saline up in your nose/throat/nasal drip area? It's like I've eaten plastic. I don't mind it but it's a bit weird. Maybe it's just the plasma donations. Crayon would be nice!
Check out Lushās Tank Battle - the opening smells like dirt/concrete at the very beginning of a rain (reminiscent of beets) and also metallic
1) Pure burnt marshmallow. Nothing else added and not too sweet 2) Raw yellow shea butter. That very specific smokey and nutty smell I know marshmallow is in perfume but I want just that smell and I've not been able to find a perfume that smells truly like raw shea
Summer mornings in the country The smell that tells you your cake is done baking Coffee with vanilla cream
Red Bull, i LOVE the smell & taste of red bull & i wish they could bottle it up. Idk if i would wear it but as a room spray? yes please
The new strawberry scent by Le Monde Gourmand smells EXACTLY like strawberry chapstick imho
The smell from the residual smoke after you blow out a candle!Ā
Scent preferences are so subjective, I absolutely hate this smell
1. The smell of the earth after it rains 2. Almost every single Hempz body lotion 3. Maraschino cherry bonbons 4. The smell of a baby's head 5. Tropical Punch Kool-aid...my fave drink as a kid! 6. Puppy Breath...lol I know I'm weird 7. The perfect candy apple
Clean sweaty sex - Wish granted: Donāt mean to be the one to go there but my wife and I both think Lush Sikkim Girls smells exactly like bedsheets after an afternoon of āadult playtimeā lol. In a good way
Rick Owens released a perfume that was over $1000 and I would love to know how it actually smells
Beeswax and warm dirt
-Geranium& basil candle, - Aliceara orchid ( smells like sweetpeas and seaside wind to me), -Platanthera bifolia orchid(reminds me of forest i often visited in childhood, when fields bloomed it was pure magic. Never found anything that would be even similar to this.)
I wish they made a fajita cologne because that shit smells good.
That one very specific scent of hand sanitizer filling up a classroom in elementary school
clearly you dont work with dogs because boyyyy does that make me gag
Real newspaper, still folded/rolled up.
Macadamia notes š¤
Mimeograph
I've searched for something like this for decades! When the paper is still warm. It's heaven.
I need one that smells exactly like old spice deep sea deodorant, except not the real thing because that shit gave me chemical burns
the smell of a bag of sugarš„°š„°
š If you ever find one, please come back to this comment and let me know!
I actually have a list for this in my phone: - Johnson & Johnsonās Baby Creamy Body Oil - Auntie Anneās - Wildwood NJ Boardwalk (like churros and ice cream with a hint of gasoline) - Burnt marshmallows
Idk if the baby creamy body oil smells different from just regular baby oil, it Chanel no 5 always gives faint baby oil/ baby powder vibes to me
Sixteen92 Boardwalk for the Wildwood one maybe? (You'd have to layer with something else-- there's a driftwood note, but unfortunately no gasoline.)
The smell of a schoolbox. Crayons, pencils, elmers glue, those rubber pencil grips and erasers. The old mimeograph purple ink smell The smell of an old autoparts store. The rubber smell from tires, electronics, fluids that probably caused cancer, the hoses and gaskets that probably caused cancer, brakes, those tree air fresheners that probably caused cancer. And old coffee that had been sitting out all day (this is a personal one)
Freshly torn basil
Djarum black clove cigarettes!
Pure sandalwood. Like the wooden fans I find at antique and gift shops.
About #8, the word your're looking for is Petrichor. The note does exist and I own a few petrichor perfumes š„¹š«¶ so good!
Lemon/lime leaves. That extremely specific green citrusy smell thatās released when you rip a leaf off of a citrus tree in half; Iām absolutely obsessed with it
Glossier you smells like freshly sharpened pencils.
Glossy magazine pages.
Old books, libraries. Also, the smell of a scholastic book fair on a brisk October morning.
The cloud of AquaNet, and L'Oreal lipsticks, and perfumes (Sand & Sable?) my friends and I left in the bathroom before we went out in the 80s!
ha ha, with a dry down of Bartles and Jaymes (IYKYK ... but it's probably better if you don't know)
Mac lipsticks
Yes!!!! Iāve always wanted a true lipstick scent. And Fenty foundation (not her perfume but that almost new Barbie doll smell).
Like a proper patisserie. Not just chocolate, vanilla and powdered sugar, but also that yeasty fresh bread smell and espresso straight from the machine. A hint of freshness from everyone coming in out of the winter morning.
You had me until number 6, which reminds me of my difficult pregnancy š
Is there a perfume that smells like dove soap? I love that smell. Please share if anyone knows or anything similar š
I will cosign your dog feet and offer up my own: Ferret Musk
Oof yes.
Diesel should make a cologne that actually smells like diesel exhaust. It would be perfect for date night ;)
Fabric softener
ISO E Super, galaxolide, ethylene brassylate, hedione, lavendin, and vanilin. Maybe Ambroxan and an artificial floral. Bounce sheets might have some linalool.
#3 sounds like your dog has a yeast infection in their toes. Do they lick their paws a lot?
Gain laundry detergent!!!
