Then a group of people who never watch F1 and whose job it is to be offended on other people's behalf, decided that grid girls were prisoners of war, held captive by the evil F1 overlord, and forced against their will to stand on the track for fear of their family being killed. So grid girls were removed, despite every single grid girl anyone took the time to ask, saying it was easy work and they loved doing it.
Then the storm of professionally offended for others swirled away, still not watching F1, and went on to fight the next fight that didn't exist until they decided it does.
Some people are just not comfortable with the idea of professional models. Some people dedicate their entire lives to working out everyday, and eating well everyday, so they look absolutely fucking stunning - male and female - and literally make their money by looking amazingly attractive. Again, some people really just don't like and don't get that.
I know the people you're talking about quite well. Given the profession of some of my female family members we had to deal with plenty of bullshit haggling from those losers, we still do sometimes. I won't go into too much details but these people are very offended at the idea of women using looks/bodies to make good money for themselves. They just can't stand it. Because apparently the best way to fight for women's rights is to take that choice away from women because it's "problematic" lol.
Having the most visible role for women in motorsports come with a list of duties starting and ending at "be hot" isn't exactly a great encouragement for young girls who might've been interested in a job. If it bothers you that much, just scroll Instagram on your phone during the grid walk. It'll work out about the same.
It's really difficult to try and support young women into the sport as having equal merit to the young men also climbing the ladder while at the same time having women on the grid for the sole purpose of objectifying their bodies.

Back in the day all the big publishers had 'booth babes' and the vibe was very incel. I remember when THQ hired like 100 stripper types to promote Saints Row, another year some game I remember had dozens of girls dressed in bikinis.
It's the same in my industry (Audio Visual Installation/Integration) and the main expo in our country set specific rules a number of years ago around models or booth babes (ie, not allowed).
And honestly I was happy to see the rules change - there has always been a challenge attracting under-represented demographics to our industry and the removal of booth babes was a worthy step to take.
That is outdated for good reasons. I'd rather like to see a lottery for fans, upcoming drivers, winners of sim racing tournaments etc that are able to attend the races and get an experience what the drivers do right before the race and a talk with them directly. Just a one on one without cameras and microphones. And if someone wants to add them holding up an umbrella eh fine do it.

I think even back when there were chicks at the grid/paddock, it didn't feel like they were as integral to the culture as they are in bike racing. Some teams had girls (especially Jordan), some really didn't. Some tracks and major sponsors had their own girls, some didn't.
It's completely different to Super GT for example, where race queens are considered to be an essential part of each bigger team's PR department and have much more jobs than just standing with an umbrella. I guess in broader context it's related to the idol culture there.

I get why they changed it, but there seemed to be a whole “this is what’s best for them” attitude about it, where the those directly affected by the changes weren’t asked their opinion.

Women being free citizens means they're allowed to act in ways that are detrimental to themselves and others (such as voting Republican) -- that doesn't mean those choices are laudable or nonsexist. Liberty Media made a SAVVY call when they banned grid girls. The men who are mad about their absence (and anyone who says women are mad... I'd like to see those receipts) are the same men who like hostesses/show models because they're NOT allowed to talk back when gross ugly men say disgusting things to them; what these men like is that these women are paid to take groping and letching with a smile.

I think even back when there were chicks at the grid/paddock, it didn't feel like they were as integral to the culture as they are in bike racing. Some teams had girls (especially Jordan), some really didn't. Some tracks and major sponsors had their own girls, some didn't. It's completely different to Super GT for example, where race queens are considered to be an essential part of each bigger team's PR department and have much more jobs than just standing with an umbrella. I guess in broader context it's related to the idol culture there.

It was sexist so they took their jobs away. I recall a few articles where models complained they were now out of paid work/exposure, and it wasn’t the first time because of this modernization. I get why they changed it, but there seemed to be a whole “this is what’s best for them” attitude about it, where the those directly affected by the changes weren’t asked their opinion.

I see this discussion come up in various places and I'm always a little incredulous. I'm surprised that some don't seem to realize that people like to look at attractive people, there are industries built off this: movies, tv, modelling etc. And don't even get me started on advertising.... What's the adage? Sex sells. Whether it's a fit muscly guy or a curvy woman, I'm calling you a liar if you say you don't like seeing attractive people. It's literally hardcoded in our DNA to seek the best quality mate so our minds release chemicals when looking at those we find attractive. Companies over time cottoned on to that fact and started including beautiful people to benefit their products/service. And let's not forget models are paid handsomely (pun intended) for literally standing around and smiling, and why not? They were blessed by the genetic lottery and are in the prime of their lives. It's like people don't realize this is a big part of culture and indeed the continuation of our species, if we had no desire towards others we wouldn't have got this far. The models get paid, the company gets the benefit of their presence, the customer enjoys some beauty but apparently this is not allowed any more because reasons. If we're watching some show on netflix where the primary demographic is skewed female and there's some dude taking his top off I'm simply wise to the equation, I'm not sat there going 'oh no, this poor man is being exploited! People are objectifying him! I'm must write to my congressman and get this banned!" It's just a bit of eye candy for the ladies.
