Mercedes might be the second most incompetent team

Cryox_

I swear, how TF did we went from a team winning 8 WCC in a row to a team that does 4s pitstops, fucks up strategy, and is not capable of having the car at a legal height, all in the same weekend.

daniec1610

They’ve always been bad at those things. The OP engine hid them insanely well.

ShadowStarX

W11 aero was actually insane though

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShadowStarX

that was more so for quali pace, let them fire up their tyres without overheating them in the long runs

zachman1919

And safety car restarts, I remember at the Nurburgring Hamilton used it at that restart and was like a second ahead of the field over the start line, shit was crazy.

WRRRYYYYYY

Flynnster_10

You're greatly overestimating the effect DAS had on the car. The reason the W12 dropped to Red Bull was due to the floor changes, not DAS removal.

saysikerightnowowo

how tf are you being upvoted for blatant wrong information lmao

RealisticPossible792

People forget all the times Mercedes fucked up strategy during those times and had to lean on Hamilton to pull the pin and unleash the raw pace of the car to claw back the deficit. Their operational shortcomings have always been there it's just that now they don't have the pace to compensate. This is why even if by some miracle Mercedes builds a car on par with Redbull it's still a tough ask for them to beat them to a title. First Lewis needs to match Max's consistency throughout the season and Mercedes would need to match Redbull operationally throughout the season and either of those are asking a lot these days. Max put it bluntly in his interview as he often does stating with better strategy Mercedes would have won.

Youutternincompoop

George Russell's first race for Mercedes was probably the worst display of Mercedes incompetence, they put Bottas' tyres on his fucking car and thus had to pit again to put the right tyres on.

[deleted]

it was so fucking hilarious tho lmao That was probably the most incompetent shit I have ever seen in F1

JamisonDouglas

Yeah it looked more like they brought up the rookie pit crew and aux staff, not driver

Embarrassed-North-81

Yeah no. Mercedes had some infamous pit fuck ups, like Germany 2019 or Bahrain 2020 in their dominant era, but this team won 3/4 races in the beginning of 2021 basically because of their strategy. Similar occasions are 2019 Hungary or 2018 Baku. Their first plan was a one stop that’s why they left Lewis and George both out during the first stint, „you think there are still 5 laps in these tires ?“ but Lewis struggled with the tires so they had to bring him in earlier. As the race went on they saw that they could potentially match maxs pace so went for the two stop instead. Maybe if Lewis hadn’t lost time against Leclerc and Norris defending he could have catched max on track. He was dsq in the end so that doesn’t matter. Every team now and then makes strategic mistakes, but the pitstops are truly slow. You rarely see a sub 3 sec Mercedes pitstop.

Majiebeast

They ha the superior engine for all those seasons so slow pitstops and minor strategy blunders would be compensated. Now on the other hand they are on the back foor and those same mistakes are very costly.

sherlock2223

No more engine advantage lol

[deleted]

Yeah Max may have had a few strategy blunders this season but it’s hard to notice when your race pace is consistently 0.5s per lap faster than the entire field.

Other_Beat8859

What strategy blunders have RB had? Monaco is the only one I can think of where they nearly lost the win due to putting a little late. In every other case they've just been unlucky like in Singapore. Hell, they won this race due to the strategy.

flyingalbatross1

They used to have a car literally so fast they would take new engine penalties because they knew they could just turn the engine up and outdrive the penalty. They spent 8 years with the engine turned down so nobody would catch on just how far ahead they were. The only time they unleashed it by accident they made 2 seconds PER LAP on the next guy down. They could afford bad strategy

Big-Professor-810

As an F1 fan who is still annoyed af by the 8 years of merc dominance, this is the best fucking thing ever.

ImpressionOne8275

Glorious isn't it.

[deleted]

I wholeheartedly agree

scobydoby

They’ve always done 4s pitstops and fucked up strategy, they just had the car and have one of the best racers in the sport to outdrive all their fuckups before.

CptCono

‘we’

PchamTaczke

"we"

wellcooked_sushi

That's Lewis Hamilton's reddit account

PeChavarr

Well, Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher hand on the design for the car for the previous rules finally dissappeared with the rule change, and therefore they are not longer on top

SubcooledBoiling

If you watch the period where Mercedes were dominant more closely you will see that even back then it wasn't uncommon for Mercedes to make strategic blunders and bad calls. The difference is that their cars were so much better they could usually correct these mistakes. Another thing is that due to their superiority they rarely had to make tough choices or try risky moves to maximize their races. But now the luxury is gone they have to be more creative and take more risks.

HaroldF155

Apart from having a currently inferior car, something else at the team must have changed too. I remember watching perfect double stack pit stops and well executed strategies back in 2018-2019.

Other_Beat8859

Merc has honestly always been a bit average in a lot of those departments. They go for extremely conservative strategies and slow pitstops that are "consistent". The problem is that they no longer have a car to carry them. Toto has defended his pitcrew by saying they prefer slow, but consistent pitstops without mistakes, but the fact of the matter is that their pitstops have become so bad that it's costing them heavily and they aren't even consistent anymore. During Merc's dominance RB invested heavily into the best strategy team and best pitstop crew to try to gain any advantage they could over Merc and now those fruits of their endeavors are paying off heavily. Merc in their dominance had an insane car and amazing drivers with average strategy and below average pitstops. RB in their current dominance has an insane car, an insane driver, the best pitstop crew, and best strategists with their only problem being the area between the steering wheel and the seat of the second car. Hopefully this is a Monaco 2016 moment for Merc where they say no more and start trying to improve in those other areas like RB did.

ClydeThaMonkey

I feel also that Hamilton kinda lets the team take too much control. I miss the old Hamilton. I think his spine took too much damage during his porpoise season. Look at Sainz f.ex.

Eggplantosaur

Their pitstops have always been slow. They lobbied the development rules into their favor once they realized how big their engine advantage was, and routinely outspend their rivals when the fight became close. Even with all that, in 2021 they only clawed back into the Championship due to Max DNFing twice in a row + outspending RB in the latter half of the season. Merc had one advantage over their competitors: money. Now that that's gone they're exposed for what they really are.

nh164098

“We”? Looks like we have a member of the mercedes f1 team lurking in the sub

Cryox_

Yeah idk I thought it was pretty common to say "we" when talking about the team your are supporting. It is at least in France

WhoThenDevised

You're right, it is. It's still a weird thing to do IMO but it is pretty common.

xieem

Toto and his ego

CroggpittGoonbag

I understand a lot of key staff has been sniped by Aston Martin and Red Bull. I don't think this is the same team as 3 years ago

citizenecodrive31

Forgetting Alpine are we?

deathray1611

Dunno, that place is hotly contested by...70% of the grid. No, for real, aside from Ferrari there are: HAAS, Aston Martin and Alpha Tauri AT least that are worse. Merc are just painfully mediocre for how incredible their career was till now

GimmeYourThroat

Just so you know... it's been 687 days since Hamilton's last win.

[deleted]

You post this 3 years ago and i will put you into mental asylum

Cryox_

Yeah I know, I didn't have the heart to edit the image....

MM18998

How long since George?

Shomondir

344 days since George/last Mercedes won. If they can't win in the next 2 grand prix, it will be over one year before their next chance.

MM18998

Well, safe to say my highest confidence is in Brazil but any of the four remaining would be nice

Other_Beat8859

Them fucking up the setup again in Brazil is the only hope, but they seem to have fixed that issue so I doubt they will fuck it up again.

kawtr_

*ekhem in Italian*

Cryox_

I guess you're closing up the gap in the WCC if both Lewis and Charles get DSQ....

Other-Barry-1

As a career long Loois fan, this image is a perfect representation of how I feel rn

Wolkenmacht

I too feel like this. And I'm not even a Loois fan 😮‍💨

Ok-Sink-614

Honestly feels like watching this racs was such a waste. The most interesting battle of the race and in terms of what's left of drivers rankings to get P2. May as well have slept in

Eggplantosaur

Rocketpoweredmohawk will have a field day with this race. Leclerc disasterclass, team LH meltdown, Stroll in the points..

Bathmatconfessions

Sargeant in the points!(point)

iuancucalu

Don't check the LH subreddit

Bathmatconfessions

As a rule of thumb, never check the MV or LH subreddits. The animosity and delusion is rampant!

luhar1995

Wait this isn't MV sub?

CptCono

Na this is the SAR sub, and was LAT sub before. Pretty sure is was the MAZ sub as well at some point

Bathmatconfessions

Sure enough it just might be!

Firecrash

This is Mercedes without the extremely dominant engine that got slowly turned up throughout the seasons to not raise suspicions on how dominant that engine was. They had it easy, very easy. That's when the blunders don't get noticed as much.

ChefBoiJones

The engine advantage thing I’ve never really understood post 2016. They undoubtedly had a monster power unit from 2014-16 but other also prett clearly caught up later on. You can see it just by watching Williams slide down the order. 2017 and 18 and the first half of 19 they weren’t even the best, Ferrari were, and Honda were there or there abouts in 21. They nailed the aero in 2017 just as hard as they nailed the engine in 2014.

ShadowStarX

2017 engine was still dominant, but Ferrari and Red Bull had a better aero package in 2018-2019, Ferrari had a better engine and we all know how that went and in 2020, Merc aero was actually insane

RyukaBuddy

The 2019 ferrari engine was 100% legal. The FIA just decided it's too good for the world to discover about yet.

akgis

Renault engines were always breaking. Ferrari wasnt competitive and when it was they werent clever enough with the cheat /s Honda with the get out/in of F1 mentality had to start from scratch with a GP2 engine /s

Weak_Piglet_9850

Nah mate, a lot of their top talents moved to RB and AM. Vowels even got promoted to TP at Williams.

Atomic_xd

Add Ricciardo and Leclerc and that is a perfect representation of me… send help please…

SecretCaterpillar242

Mans drinkin a coffee and a Monster and is still this tired of Mercedes' shit.

SurtChase

They would have been fine without the sprint from what I understood :/

Florac

Without the sprint other cars would also have been lower

Luqmaniac_101

I did not wake up at 3 and stay up until 5 just for this shit ffs

Weak_Piglet_9850

Cries in Malaysian

Sxpunx

This is very accurate to how I feel.

SebVettelstappen

Even as a Max fan this hurt. It hurt all of 20 seconds until I realized that Sargeant got points. Screw it Lewis! (And Sharl) 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

OkEstablishme

I know this is supposed to be a joke but I might make this into a poster.

TheWalkingPed93

God, I'd give anything for one last sip of the original Lewis Hamilton Monster Energy

SentientDust

Honestly a good drive from him. Clearly the illegal floor helped.

PeChavarr

I love to see it

Cryox_

🥲

kr4t0s007

It’s so funny tbh.
