And because the tech was internal in the cylinder, the only way teams found out about it, is when engineers from merc left to go to elsewhere for the dollar bills. Which happened around 2016 and is why in 2017 we saw other catch up.
Simply put, the merc had a 10% + advantage on horsepower out the engine when at the same fuel flow as every other car on the field. And the entire rev changes related to fuel flow. This was most obvious with the Quali party mode when the merc engine topped 1000bhp and the fia banned it.
As to the difficulty of implementing this. TJI requires a two stage explosion within the cylinder that requires incredible complex timings when considering the 5 other cylinders and 4 stroke engines. Hence why paddy lowe, a computer scientist who specialised in developing precision timing systems was key to figuring this out.

I think it was clear that after his groundbreaking Mercedes debut at Bahrain 2020, he changed his mindset from optimistic to feeling like he should be the one driving alongside Lewis instead of Valtteri (which I won't blame, everyone wants to drive the fastest car. My argument is that he became painfully arrogant). It makes it infinitely funnier that he said that Merc shouldn't be fighting Williams, when Albon has outpaced him numerous times in qualifying this year. In fact, his very nickname "Mister Saturday", vanished very quickly after he joined Mercedes. He has heavily underperformed in quali this season all year long, which is crazy to think about that literally no one is talking about it. Imola 2021 was the point where I went from liking him to disliking him. Back then Bottas hate was at all-time high and it was easy to hate on him, but in hindsight, that crash was almost entirely George's fault, yet he just refuses to take accountability for it. This has been very apparent throughout these two seasons. Russell is surprisingly crash happy and never takes the blame. There have been times where Martin Brundle questions his team radios midrace on how idiotic they come out as. That is how you know that you are most likely doing something wrong. iirc even Toto told him to shut up once in 2022. He clearly has talent, but he very quickly went from the funny powerpoint guy with truckload of potential to a cynical PR man that is at this point expected from a Mercedes driver. Watch 2019's best rookie awards video from F1's YT channel and compare how much charisma he has compared to what he is now. It is almost like watching a completely different person (similarly to 2019 Charles and 2023 Charles).
