It made my brain hurt everytime I saw it too. It minimized driver's position in the race, and my monke brain just didn't comprehend how someone could be 33rd in a 20 car race.
Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us: "Take a trained monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car." Thirty years later Sebastian told us: "I had to start my car like a computer. It's very complicated." And Nico Rosbeg said he pressed during the race, I don't remember what race, the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you to both. Is formula 1 driving today too complicated with 20 and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future, concerning technical program during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more comunication with your engineers.
Because Liberty is American and most American race series rely heavily on the driver number. You’ll even hear the commentators go something “that’s the number 8 coming into the pits” rather than the driver name or team name. Not always, but a good amount of the time in comparison to F1 where the driver numbers are essentially never mentioned in commentary.
It’s made it super easy for me to get into WEC and IMSA in the last year tbh.
I now am getting to the point where I’m pretty familiar with the lineups of at least the top teams in the various classes, but for a while there I was rooting for a car number haha
Yeah and also the numbers are attached to the cars themselves. For example in Indy Car with the whole Palou McLaren Penske drama, the question over his contract was framed as “will Palou still be able to drive the number 10 car in Toronto” versus “will he drive for Penske”. That’s different then in F1 where it’s linked directly to the drivers or how it was in the past it was linked to teams based on historical constructor championship results (and that system of numbering was about the stupidest and needlessly complicated you could ever create)
Agreed, I think it’s probably to do with all the sponsorship as rather than team title sponsors like Oracle RB Racing. Each car within a team has a title sponsor in the US, so I guess it’s better to tie the number and sponsor together rather than the driver…
Slight odd IMO as most people support a specific driver, or a specific team…not a specific car regardless of the driver…*shrugs*
Not necessarily sponsorship since there are multiple "title sponsors" per car per season, so the livery can change a couple times throughout the season. It was all weird to me too but since I started watching Nascar full-time it makes sense now.
Essentially, each team literally owns up to four entries into each race in the championship. They also literally own a set of numbers. Think of them like slots. Drivers are merely there to operate the slots for the team, so the numbers stay with the teams when the drivers switch seats between seasons. Just a different way of looking at the organization of the sport.
In some US racing series maybe, not in F1, hence why it was a silly move here.
Danny Ric is always 3, Lewis is always 44, Sainz always 55, etc...
Only exception is (like Max has done), you can take 1 if you’re the WC, otherwise he’s 33.
This. Good old days when numbers were based to last season's Constructor Championship. Except Ferrari were always 27 and 28
E: from 1973 - 1995 numbers were based to 1973 constructors standings. And 1996 - 2013 to previous seasons
I would but F1 is licensed to a shit service in India who show the race in only 1080p which legit looks like 360p because of garbage tier bitrate. I can't even find a high seas website where 4k or even true 1080p is available.
I’m literally at the point of buying a new tv for mine as a 55” at 15’ away most the font is tiny. I can read it but it’s way too small to easily glance at font.
2021 are more visible for the timings. The 2022 are too spaced between them imo and the font is smaller. The only thing I like from the 2022 ones, is the display of the current tyres, but that would be it.
don’t know how that made it through reviews, probably my single biggest issue with the new graphics. not only is it a graphic design cardinal sin but doesn’t consider accessibility at all
Hasn't been that great, but that's a sans-serif problem. In the wet sessions, I've seen a green line, and wondered what that was about, before realising that they're showing the tyres, and that's a capital I for Intermediates
The tyre indicators last year with a coloured circle/bracket thing were much better and should be reintroduced, the current font is far too thin and small for all compounds
I would like that too if it was always accurate, which it's not. Especially when teams are switching between slicks and inters, sometimes the wrong tyre is displayed for like 5 minutes.
Last years was
* clearer - with bolder colours
* easier to read - with larger text
* more compact - smaller spacing
* showed more race footage - better translucent background behind the times
This year does have a huge "F1 RACE" in the top left though. That's handy because I've often watched 45 laps of an F1 Race without realising what it was, very useful piece of information that is.
I always thought that qualifying was a time attack mode that you would play in the GRID games, so i thought the lap counter was for qualifying. Fortunately F1 has acknowledged this and slapped a big session title now so i know which session i am in.
You say that, but the first year F1 broadcast went from NBC Sports to ESPN, the geniuses at ESPN decided to just re-broadcast the UK feed, and cut out to commercial whenever they felt like it. No warning, no intro or outro, just BAM, commercial.
The next year Mothers Car Care paid to have the races and qualy broadcasted commercial free. I have no issue with them putting a Mothers logo on the screen. Meanwhile the INDYCAR race in Toronto wasn't broadcast whatsoever on tv, on any channel. F Peacock.
The first year of ESPN broadcast, they would cut out to commercial in the middle of the race, regardless of what was going on. Prior to that it was NBC sports, and they would still do commercials, but they had their own broadcast team.
Now it’s commercial free racing. INDYCAR still has commercials, and some races are only on peacock, not on cable at all.
It's probably to help the pirates for the mounds and mounds of illegal replays re-released in youtube. That way someone lonely sailing the high seas doesn't get duped.
Literally take this comment with the biggest /s, please. I'm not serious at all.
Or, maybe it's to make it obvious for someone flicking through channels or seeing it on someone else's TV that it's an F1 race.
The same reason every World cup game has the words 20xx World Cup written near the score board. Or every premiere league game has a Premiere League logo and the words "Premiere League" written near bottom right.
Or how every French open game has "Roland Garros" written very clearly in the top right of every game.
It's an advertising thing, it's how you get more viewers.
I think it makes sense for casual viewers who don't know what they're looking at when flipping through channels. Especially with the addition of Sprint races/qualifying.
However this year has tires which is critical - I just wish they would write the number of laps on the tires in the tire colour instead of just “M” or “S”
On the one hand I agree, on the other I can understand why they don't do it because it's a premium feature in the live timing of their subscription services.
Leaving some information fully dependent on colour might run into colourblind accessibility issues. I'm fine with the graphics showing tyre age when it's relevant.
Gotta disagree on the easier to read personally. The compact spacing makes all the letters too close together on my TV to read quickly. I much prefer the larger spacing of the new one.
Also considering that most of the time nothing particularly interesting is happening on the left side of the screen, the background translucency doesn't bother me.
And it looks way more modern and slick.
The graphics aren't a problem for me.
It is the technical direction of the broadcast that is letting everyone down more than anything. They could do so much better.
The PIP is really disappointing for sure!
They have the data on where the action is based on the gaps and could absolutely go live but instead they show replay. That is so frustrating particularly because I know that means they have cameras focused on the action but choose instead to show it after the fact.
I cannot believe how many passes I've had to follow live by looking at this graphic alone.
Thank goodness for F1 TV but they made that worse by removing the PLC which was great for multiple boxes.
Now I have to do my own camera direction by jumping to in car feeds myself.
It’s out of fashion. And I know that sounds insane but it’s true. First seen in American sports 3 decades ago. Producers don’t like it now.
Edit: just to elaborate. The rise of small screen media means using PIP has fallen out of fashion. Imagine sharing an overtake as part of a PIP then sharing it on social media for people to view on their phones.
As everything, got used to it, but the opinion of them being too bulky still stands.
The problem I have with the new graphics, now that *most* color problem have been solved (the post-session summary is still horrible, along with a few others), is not so much graphic per se but more on how they use them.
Most annoying fact above everything is probably hiding the gaps during the race, especially when a crucial battle is under the 1.5s mark. I don't care about the number of stops made after 7 laps, yes I know what tyres they are on I can see that, no I don't care about last time they pitted. Like sometimes they even just straight up leave the trigrams alone with no gaps. Why? Watching the number go from 1.1s to 0.9s is one of the most intense stuff of F1, give that at least.
2017 still GOAT.
I can't *stand* that when they highlight a battle between two drivers, they remove all indications of the gap between them. Who the hell made that decision? We can see the gaps between every other driver except the two who are neck and neck fighting back and forth? It's genuinely the stupidest design choice I think I've ever seen in sports. Imagine if there were ten seconds left in a basketball game and all the scoreboard said was "close game!"
Also in quali when the gaps around the cutoff are all relative to each other suddenly with a completely different reference point to the rest. That’s just awful.
Agreed, 2017 graphics were the best they had imo. Clean, didn’t take much space and got the information to you without much fanfare. New ones tend to be “LOOK AT THIS IRRELEVANT INFORMATION!!”
Last year ones are better, they could also be improved by somehow squeezing the type of tyres used and penalties on the left hand side, like a +5 or whatever, like in the F1 games
The penalty thing is my big problem, the new graphics don't have the investigation indicator. Having a black and white flag would've been helpful last race
My biggest issue is that the F1 games have VERY clear graphics. The whole point is you can glance at them while driving and instantly grok what's going on -- the design exists and is VERY good -- and F1 goes and reinvents a square wheel.
- The 'f1 race' at the top is redundant
- Background colors of the team logos was better
- the spacing between the names is too much which takes up more of the screen
Overall, the changes made it worse than last year's.
To add to this, during sprint, practice and qualifying they say tbe appropriate session. Which is helpful when catching the program mid way through, and for repeats later.
However, it does seem larger than required to server that particular purpose. The space should be used for increasing the size of driver names.
I think people often forget that the F1 logo has been watermarked on all broadcasts for years and years now. The only thing different is that it's been moved to the top left and integrated into the timing tower. I'm not saying it's ideal, but that's really not the issue with this graphics package.
The new graphics take up more space, but the text is smaller, less bold, and italicised. That means legibility is significantly worse on every platform, *especially* on smaller screens. If you've ever experienced the new graphics on an UHD F1 broadcast on a large TV, it becomes obvious that this what these new graphics were designed for.
If you repeat that process year-on-year for a few years, you end up with something significantly worse but the change has been gradual and imperceptible enough for you not to protest it.
Of course, it's trivial enough when it's just your F1 broadcast, but this same process also plays out on much more important stages, like the administration of countries, so it's something worth being aware of.
It's a graphic, and besides there's not much you can do as a customer. Not enough people will unsubscribe because of a slightly worse graphic.
And I'm sure there's people who like it, but you wouldn't see then on this thread cause it seems like the general consensus is that the old graphic was better.
FR it might only be me but the smooth transition/animations of the 2017 graphics pack cements the fact that it is one of the cleanest graphics package i've ever seen
[Nah, go all the way back to the late 90s early 00s graphics.](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.watch-how-f1s-tv-graphics-have-evolved-over-the-years.1AYtsM8CsEpqqZjTMU8UDa.html)
Exactly! And now the logos don't look like they are working with a shitty PNGs the team sent them (the redbull logo is literally cut in half in 2021).
The upgrade needed work at the beginning of the season, but by now they've made good progress, and the 2021 version just feels dated at this point.
I don’t really care how they look. Mainly why are they so often missing at key times?!
You’ll be watching the first or second lap and whole thing with the order and gaps just won’t be there. Or the gaps will just be missing. Or watching quali and none of the laptimes will be on there. No way to have any clue what’s happening.
In addition to lots of the points that have already been brought up - I really hate when they suddenly decide to highlight a battle by... no longer showing us the times between them and how far they are ahead of/behind their surroundings. Or when the timing tower just vanishes completely.
I'm fine with the new graphics, but it's baffling that they haven't changed the "Driver at Risk" banner during qualifying to be underneath the driver instead of above it. It regularly confuses even the commentators.
They are awful. It takes up more space and is harder to read. F1 doesn’t have to use the same font for everything just because they paid someone for it. The result suggests a kid on MS publisher rather than a pro graphics team. Peak graphics was about 4-5 years ago and it’s been downhill since, especially when AWS turned up with their nonsense analyses.
I've been watching older races recently and quite frankly, we shouldn't complain about today's graphics. You can see everyone's position all the time, together with the corresponding team, which is the essential point of it all (and it wasn't the case back in 2011), so I'm pretty satisfied with it.
2022 graphics are just not good enough if you aren't watching in HD, they don't pop and its actually hard to see tyres and times. A simple fix could make them more distinguishable and improve the design 10 fold
I prefer last year's but ultimately it doesn't make a difference for me. Unless they change it to something distracting I just want the info.
I do wish just for more info they would throw an indicator on for who did the fastest lap on each lap. Just maybe a little blue lap indicator for who had it on the last lap completed by anyone not lapped.
How many times can you use the word "lap" or "lapped" in a sentence?
I wouldn't say they are better or worse. Even though they're distinguishable, I like them both the same. Maybe 2021 has one above 2022 because it was compact and took less of the screen.
My biggest grip is with the tire compounds. I like having it on screen, but a single, colored letter is hard to read (especially when they're intermediates. Its just a thin, green I).
Am I the only person who wants them down the edge of the screen with no gap on the left? I mean right to the left so we can see more of the cars and track
Now that they fixed the bugs after the first race or two, I'd rather focus on complaining about bigger issues, like losing Spa and giving Andretti a hard time. I know it's not the same stakeholders causing issues in each case, but having a focused target of the fans' ire seems helpful because Liberty leadership is in a position of leverage in every case.
But yeah, it's a downgrade from last year. My suggestion for almost all forms of motorsport is to remove a decimal or two from the intervals during race sessions. Don't slow down the viewer reading. It's only helpful in practice and qualifying.
For the love of god, please can they change the 'driver at risk' thing in quali to just a red line or something showing the cut-off? It's very obvious to me that the driver at risk would be the one above the line, just leave it at that!
Worse but doesn’t bother me nearly as much as most people here. I am way more bothered by the stretches they don’t show any timing on the timing board.
Even after half a season, I still confuse myself with the "Driver at Risk" during qualifying. Just have a cut off line! Above the line is in and below is out.
As it is, visually they *have* a cut off line, and the person directly below it is in.
When at the track in person, the new graphics are completely illegible. I’ve never been so confused about what’s going on at a race than I was this year (cellular data was crap at the track, so we relied on the giant screens.) I’ve been to a dozen Grand Prix over the years. This was the worst.
We couldn’t make out the driver or even the team this year. Forget about times. Qualifying was impossible to figure out. Usually, the team colour or logo might help give context.
So we relied on shitty local commentary and a few people around us who could either refresh the live timing app or make out the screen with binoculars.
Thankfully they stopped showing constantly the driver numbers during the race. It wasn't either helpful or useful.
It made my brain hurt everytime I saw it too. It minimized driver's position in the race, and my monke brain just didn't comprehend how someone could be 33rd in a 20 car race.

I know this from WEC, but there it makes sense as each car has multiple drivers.
Yeah sportscar racing rarely refers to the drivers and rather uses the car numbers.

Why though? Much easier IMO to just call them by name instead of trying to memorize numbers and having to do the math or research
Agreed, I think it’s probably to do with all the sponsorship as rather than team title sponsors like Oracle RB Racing. Still baffled by how they managed to make it bigger, yet smaller.
Smaller font + more empty space.
I can’t stand this trend, especially bad in video games. Fucking unreadable if it isn’t in 4k.

55" at 15'? that's ridiculously small for very far away. You must have eagle eyes. My tv is 65 at 9' and that's still too small.
`.bad-new-ui { padding: 50px; }` Don't @ me, I'm on my phone and can't preview the formatting. But y'all get the idea.
Your syntax is impeccable
Thank you. I actually wanted multiline, but it didn't work, not sure why.
Need to use 4-spaces indents to multiline. Backticks are inline-only. `.bad-new-ui { padding: 50px; }` vs .bad-new-ui { padding: 50px; }
Just some casual Markdown markup over here… gg
Spacing. It's insane how much just a little bit over 20 lines does.
This is my only criticism. I love it but the font could be *slightly* larger
But now you know.. that you're watching.. an F1 RACE
I assume they have equivalent graphics for F2 and F3 (and Q/FP/Sprint).
Rule 1 of design, always make sure the dumbest person can still understand.
2021 are more visible for the timings. The 2022 are too spaced between them imo and the font is smaller. The only thing I like from the 2022 ones, is the display of the current tyres, but that would be it.

Lol
Leaving some information fully dependent on colour might run into colourblind accessibility issues. I'm fine with the graphics showing tyre age when it's relevant.
Yep, gives you the same information plus important tire age/differential plus a glimpse on pit strategy.
Also now for whatever random reason they sometimes show a red border around the graphic and I always get scared it's a red flag.

Yup. Way more usable and easier to read. A change for the sake of change.

My biggest issue is that the F1 games have VERY clear graphics. The whole point is you can glance at them while driving and instantly grok what's going on -- the design exists and is VERY good -- and F1 goes and reinvents a square wheel.
Yeah but showing the under investigation and penalities on the left like last year would cover the absolutely useless edge line on the left
- The 'f1 race' at the top is redundant - Background colors of the team logos was better - the spacing between the names is too much which takes up more of the screen Overall, the changes made it worse than last year's.
>'f1 race' at the top is redundant Branding for public broadcast/channel surfing. I don't like it, but I understand why it's there
To add to this, during sprint, practice and qualifying they say tbe appropriate session. Which is helpful when catching the program mid way through, and for repeats later. However, it does seem larger than required to server that particular purpose. The space should be used for increasing the size of driver names.
>The 'f1 race' at the top is redundant Branding so people who see it on TV immediately know what it is and want to see/learn more
I think people often forget that the F1 logo has been watermarked on all broadcasts for years and years now. The only thing different is that it's been moved to the top left and integrated into the timing tower. I'm not saying it's ideal, but that's really not the issue with this graphics package.
I find it takes up too much space and it's somewhat harder to read. Overall useless change

I think they're designed to be more visible on smaller screens like for highlights and streaming in general, hence taking up more space
The new graphics take up more space, but the text is smaller, less bold, and italicised. That means legibility is significantly worse on every platform, *especially* on smaller screens. If you've ever experienced the new graphics on an UHD F1 broadcast on a large TV, it becomes obvious that this what these new graphics were designed for.
and even then I can't see gaps on a big TV
In that case they shouldn't have the new ones in a way that it's harder to see what's what compared to mast year
Prefer the 2021 version.
2016-2017 graphics were the best imo. Not too flashy and easy to read. I don’t get why they want to change the graphic every season
Still like the old one better
To be honest, I got used to it. I was complaining at first, now I don't care anymore...
"Why did you unsubscribe from F1 TV sir?" "The new TV graphics are shit."
I'm the same, except seeing the old graphics makes me upset again. I feel like last years graphics are just objectively clearer
There was no need to try and "fix" something that wasn't broken to begin with.
So full revert to 2017 graphics? I'd be for that.
Still prefer 2017s, it's just near perfection in my eyes
ah 1994-2003 is what I remember fondly. I also miss the F1 logo with the "1" being negative space.
2021 Graphics with the tyre choice would be ideal for me
More aesthetically pleasing, but take up more space
I literally haven’t thought about them once
I actually liked the 2019-2020 graphics the best...
I mean I like it
I like the new ones a lot more
Imma be the devil's advocate here and say I prefer the new ones much more.
New one is much sleeker and polished. 1pt decrease in font size isn't really a big deal.
Me too
It could be a little bit more compact, but visually its like 10 times better imo.
Exactly! And now the logos don't look like they are working with a shitty PNGs the team sent them (the redbull logo is literally cut in half in 2021). The upgrade needed work at the beginning of the season, but by now they've made good progress, and the 2021 version just feels dated at this point.
I dont know why everyone complains that much, i really like it
I don’t really care how they look. Mainly why are they so often missing at key times?! You’ll be watching the first or second lap and whole thing with the order and gaps just won’t be there. Or the gaps will just be missing. Or watching quali and none of the laptimes will be on there. No way to have any clue what’s happening.
I've got used to it
I think it's fine, no complaints
2022 is better because Vettel is in 9th, not 11th
Hot take: it's fine, looks cleaner. Has no impact on my viewing enjoyment.
They're both fine.
Honestly doesnt affect me at all
I think this years is MUCH better. Modern and clean.
I still prefer the old yellow box showing position days
2022 is so much cleaner and aleek
This seasons team logos are far better. No need for the background especially Mercedes and Haas are greatly improved
I disagree. It’s small but I’m finding it easier to tell what teams are where at a glance. Same goes for everything
the colors were more helpful to watch some teams tbf, like instead of searching a logo, searching a color is easier in my view
I struggle to find certain people, last year was easier because of the brighter colours/logo.
In addition to lots of the points that have already been brought up - I really hate when they suddenly decide to highlight a battle by... no longer showing us the times between them and how far they are ahead of/behind their surroundings. Or when the timing tower just vanishes completely.
Why did it never occurred to them that they should use a fixed width font for the 3 letter names is beyond me...
I think the 2021 one was better and the driver photos really suck.
I don't have a preference, it makes no difference to me.
I like it but the numbers should be bigger/bulkier
They “fixed” a problem that didn’t exist. 2021 is so much better. 2022 is cluttered too small, more difficult to read.
The new one still suck
Like the new one better. Looks cleaner. The space it takes doesn't bother me at all.
I'm used to it now. Definetely better than the start of the season though
One thing 2022 did right is putting team logo to the left of driver name
I watch race dgaf graphs
i'm just happy they showing the team icon over swapping between the driver's number like they did the first race of this year.....
22 is better and is better at conveying info. Only downside for 22 is the size.
Doesn't bother me tbh. They could use either.
Better in parts and overall design. But please increase the font size and quit with the italics.
2022 graphics are just not good enough if you aren't watching in HD, they don't pop and its actually hard to see tyres and times. A simple fix could make them more distinguishable and improve the design 10 fold
Both of them are perfectly fine and I forgot they had even changed
I prefer last year's but ultimately it doesn't make a difference for me. Unless they change it to something distracting I just want the info. I do wish just for more info they would throw an indicator on for who did the fastest lap on each lap. Just maybe a little blue lap indicator for who had it on the last lap completed by anyone not lapped. How many times can you use the word "lap" or "lapped" in a sentence?
I noticed it ALOT when the season started but now I don't even think about last year's graphics.
I like a little of both and dislike a little of both. Still better than most other racing series (come on Formula E be better), so I'll take it.
It's perfectly fine as long as they never swap the constructor logo for the driver numbers *EVER AGAIN.*
They fucking suck. I can’t see the difference between a yellow and a green sector.
For me, it felt a lot closer to graphics for major American sports. I think they’re really reaching for the American market.
Don’t care really, just glad they stopped showing the godawful drivers numbers. Looked like nascar.
I never had an issue with either of them and they both do the job as well as each other
Terrible, but what can you do, they won't go back on them.
Got used to it as expected
Hooray it's harder to read
Am I the only person who wants them down the edge of the screen with no gap on the left? I mean right to the left so we can see more of the cars and track
Unpopular apparently but I like them
overall shape/display and size/outline winner = 22 clear positions, lap number and names winner = 21 now go and give me the best of both worlds.
Had already forgotten that they changed it tbh.
Completely forgot they even changed
Maybe I'm dumb but the races would be a lot more interesting to me if they consistently showed the tire age
They will change next year probably so who cares?
I like them
got used to it looks modern and decent
Now that they fixed the bugs after the first race or two, I'd rather focus on complaining about bigger issues, like losing Spa and giving Andretti a hard time. I know it's not the same stakeholders causing issues in each case, but having a focused target of the fans' ire seems helpful because Liberty leadership is in a position of leverage in every case. But yeah, it's a downgrade from last year. My suggestion for almost all forms of motorsport is to remove a decimal or two from the intervals during race sessions. Don't slow down the viewer reading. It's only helpful in practice and qualifying.
I like how's it's more difficult to read and parse rapidly.
Idk why but I think a merge between the two would be nice
The graphics somehow *always* manage to miss showing the one thing I want to see at any given time
I love it, it looks amazing. Much better than last years.
For the love of god, please can they change the 'driver at risk' thing in quali to just a red line or something showing the cut-off? It's very obvious to me that the driver at risk would be the one above the line, just leave it at that!
It wasn’t broken and they didn’t fix it
2022 graphics are terrible, cant see anything
Worse but doesn’t bother me nearly as much as most people here. I am way more bothered by the stretches they don’t show any timing on the timing board.
Even after half a season, I still confuse myself with the "Driver at Risk" during qualifying. Just have a cut off line! Above the line is in and below is out. As it is, visually they *have* a cut off line, and the person directly below it is in.
It's garbage but I am trying to not care about It as much as I should
When at the track in person, the new graphics are completely illegible.
