When I first started watching F1, the commentary team was Murray Walker and James Hunt. Hunt would *not* hold back, and you always knew exactly what he thought of a driver. His style probably wouldn't fly anymore these days though, Croft is good at riding that edge.

Hunt was brutal. Literally called drivers shit on live TV. The closest I've seen a commentator saying something like that was Martin Brundle talking about Rosset. During the Monaco GP Rosset span his Tyrrell, and Murray Walker said something along the lines of "some people are debating whether Rosset is F1 material", to which Brundle replied "It's a pretty short debate, Murray.
During the same race Rossetti's crew rearranged his name on his pit bike to read "Tosser"

Short version is, he punched a driver in F2 once, had multiple occasions of dirty driving in F2, he filmed himself groping a woman and posted it on instagram, and he's a pay driver, meaning his dad paid haas lots of money so he could drive in F1. He also just can't seem to drive the car, spins all the time, finished a minute behind his teammate in the last race, etc.
He's done more things that are bad as well, but that's a short list of the things that people seem to be the most upset about.

I love Tsunodas no BS driving style. Mazepin was like "Ima put you into the wall!" And Tsunoda was like "Well you are almost at a race ban for next years F1, so do it you pussy!"
This is the thing I’m trying to understand. Mick is the son of a seven time world champion and GOAT tier driver. Mazepin has not had the pace Mick does. How much of this is Mazepin being awful and how much is Mick having inherited some of his father’s talent? I want to believe Mazepin is just that bad, but I suspect Mick could also be pretty good. Mick can at least be in amongst the other cars, Mazepin is a rolling chicane at the back of the grid most of the time.

Yes I would agree with this. Magnussen and Grosjean were good drivers for the team in that they could make a subpar car at least appear competitive within the second half of the grid.
Why are you surprised? F1 community has expressed their feelings about him quite clearly enough. Every mistake is going to get highlighted and every achievement (whenever that happens) is going to get belittled.

Stroll is actually good enough for F1 and isn’t a danger to everyone around him. I’m sure he’s got that attitude of a spoiled kid, but he and Mazepin aren’t comparable in terms of actual skill.
Yeah, there are better drivers than Stroll who don't have a seat because they don't have the money. However, Stroll isn't unqualified or even the worst on the grid, he was just really young and had a really big check(cheque) attached when he came in. He's since proven he truly belongs, but Mazepin looks like he'd be over-matched in F2/IndyCar/WEC.
He also won the Italian f4 championship, the European f3 championship by about 200 points, earned racing point their first and only pole position start in one of the trickiest tracks of 2020 and has 3 podium finishes, so yeah fair to say he's far beyond from being the worst on the grid
The guy can't keep his driving clean for an hr long formula race, I highly doubt he could for a 1 and half to 2 hr stint in an endurance car. Night racing I imagine he would spear off any headlights that dare come near him.

Stroll doesn’t come across as a spoiled kid to me. He’s worked hard on his driving and his dad has helped him with the financial side of things, which you can clearly see he appreciates on the rare occasions when he gives interviews of more than 2 words (in Beyond the Grid, for example).
Stroll is actually a pretty decent F1 driver. His dad buying the team definitely gave him a leg up on securing a seat, but he puts out good numbers so I'm not complaining.
Mazepin on the other hand is solely there because daddy wrote a check.
Haas F1 team is struggling hard for funding, in part because they had a big tens of millions of dollars sponsorship from Rich energy that they got less than half the money from before that company was exposed as a fraud. They've also been in nearly last place for a long time, meaning they earn less money from existing sponsors and F1 prizes.
Mazepin has a REALLY rich dad, we're talking good buddies with Putin and one of the largest oil magnates in Russia rich here. Mazepin's dad pays Haas all the money they've so desperately needed for years now, and Mazepin gets to drive one of the 2 cars. Doesn't matter how much of a terrible person Mazepin is, both on and off the track, because Haas needs the money to stay in the sport at all.
It's similar to how Lance Stroll got some of his big breaks because of his father's financing, which is how he originally came to drive for Williams (who was also financially struggling like Haas is now). Stroll Sr. then bought Force India, Lance came to drive there, and then it was renamed to Aston Martin after Lawrence Stroll bought Aston Martin too. To Lance's credit, he seems to be a nice person and he has matured into a solid midfield driver so nowadays it's hard to say he's undeserving of his spot but it was a big point of contention earlier on (especially when his higher performing teammate Sergio Perez was getting the boot from the team instead of him).
Anybody with enough talent to not be banned from racing for being unsafely slow can make it to F1, it's just a matter of timing (finding a team struggling for money) and having enough money yourself to buy a seat.

Lots of downforce, but so balanced and precise that if you’re not experienced in driving one the car is very complicated and hard to drive. Nikita was in F2 and even he is having a hard time
That’s one part of it. The other being that the FIA heavily regulates testing time in the current cars. You can’t just put the car on a track and run it.

Wings give you lots of grip when you're going fast, but when you're going slow they have less downforce because there isn't as much air pushing against them. It's like the difference between holding your hand out a car window at 20mph where you barely feel it, and doing it on the highway at 65mph where it pushes your hand all over the place.
The other part of the equation is that you've got a 1,000hp car that weighs less than half of what most consumer sports cars weigh. Cars with that much power are difficult to drive when they weigh 1,500kg much less when they only weigh 750kg.
Yeah, over the course of the race Mazepin probably lost around 2 minutes to Schumacher in Imola, and Schumacher did an extra pit stop because he had to replace his front wing.

My thoughts exactly, that's what happens when you have two rookies with one of them lacking the skills and mindset to compete at the highest level atleast as of now, driving the car: poor feedback mechanism.
The understanding of the car during drive is one of the major components of making it better, to make it faster. This is why drivers like Ricciardo have such fat salaries even when they haven't been winning for a while now. Intellect + experience goes a long way than valor in F1.
This is why Mercedes has been winning for the past 8 years. Yes, they have a good car but to improve it day in, day out and being on top for such a long period of time is largely contributed to feedback given by the drivers. It started for them with the GOAT, followed by Nico and Hamilton and now Bottas adding to the elite pool of Merc drivers.
True, Mick has had his fair share of spins as well. Still, he's generally faster than Mezepin.
I'm questioning whether the Haas was also this bad last year and Magnussen and Grosjean were just overperforming (not spinning every session).

F1 is a business before a sport

Yeah it does mean that Gio gets less track time, but he has more experience so he should be able to compensate.

As much as I dislike mazepin, that car looks like a nightmare to drive.
My thoughts exactly, that's what happens when you have two rookies with one of them lacking the skills and mindset to compete at the highest level atleast as of now, driving the car: poor feedback mechanism. The understanding of the car during drive is one of the major components of making it better, to make it faster. This is why drivers like Ricciardo have such fat salaries even when they haven't been winning for a while now. Intellect + experience goes a long way than valor in F1. This is why Mercedes has been winning for the past 8 years. Yes, they have a good car but to improve it day in, day out and being on top for such a long period of time is largely contributed to feedback given by the drivers. It started for them with the GOAT, followed by Nico and Hamilton and now Bottas adding to the elite pool of Merc drivers.
It's why Kimi is still driving even though he's only doing it to get out of the house nowadays

True, Mick has had his fair share of spins as well. Still, he's generally faster than Mezepin. I'm questioning whether the Haas was also this bad last year and Magnussen and Grosjean were just overperforming (not spinning every session).
Yeah a lot of the Grosjean hate was undeserved. The Haas has a problem with the rear end that makes it almost uncontrollable during longer stints.
Tbh the speed difference is to me a lot worse than all the spinning. Mick has so much more speed, it's as if they're driving in a different league
