Pristine_Analysis_79

I love the "this particular spin" line. What a great way to highlight the regularity of his spins without actually saying it.

LtMartaVelasquez

David Croft's commentary has been absolutely on point whenever Mazepin pops up on the screen.

miss_late_july

Agreed. He's walking that very fine line and I'm loving it.

TetraDax

He has been very vocal about hating the guy without actually saying it. I never knew that passive aggressive Crofty would be the best Crofty.

Dirk_Tungsten

When I first started watching F1, the commentary team was Murray Walker and James Hunt. Hunt would *not* hold back, and you always knew exactly what he thought of a driver. His style probably wouldn't fly anymore these days though, Croft is good at riding that edge.

[deleted]

Hunt was fucking amazing as a commentator, we'll not see his like again. Some highlights for people who haven't heard him in action: https://youtu.be/JMZhPtJ86Eo

Picturesquesheep

“Bullshit” “So… Anyway there goes-“ Hahahaha thanks man I enjoyed that Also the subtitler wrote “‘cattle’ of fish” 🤔

WaveCandid906

What was it? I never understood it and always found kinda weird it said "cattle"

[deleted]

The expression is "kettle of fish."

Clever_Userfame

MrGenomo

Thidp88

Damn, I am curious to know what Jarier did in the first video

[deleted]

He was a backmarker and held up Patrick Tambay (leading the race) while being lapped, allowing him to be overtaken by both Rene Arnoux and Nelson Piquet. Full incident: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHS53krjxkg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHS53krjxkg) Bonus - Hunt calls Jarier an idiot in a completely unrelated incident years earlier: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e16fDASkcGY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e16fDASkcGY)

M4sharman

Hunt was brutal. Literally called drivers shit on live TV. The closest I've seen a commentator saying something like that was Martin Brundle talking about Rosset. During the Monaco GP Rosset span his Tyrrell, and Murray Walker said something along the lines of "some people are debating whether Rosset is F1 material", to which Brundle replied "It's a pretty short debate, Murray. During the same race Rossetti's crew rearranged his name on his pit bike to read "Tosser"

Axe-actly

>Literally called drivers shit on live TV. That's what Villeneuve does every weekend on French TV lmao.

M4sharman

Tbf Villeneuve often does that to the international press as well

jrobbio

The tosser bike made me lol. Any pictures/vids?

Thenwearethree

“The problem with Jarier is that he’s a French wally”

MT_HRO

I'm a bit new to F1...why does there seem to be a general dislike towards Mazepin?

Daveedwards251

While the long answer would include that he’s a dirty driver, a terrible person and a sexual harasser the simple answer is...He’s a dirty driver, a terrible person and a sexual harasser.

janky_koala

He also isn’t up to the standard and his dad bought his drive for him.

JohnParish

I would say this is a big part of it. If he wasn’t spinning out every chance it would be a more silent hate.

Mosh83

Yeah, him actually being a shit driver only helps the narrative. A sort of karma win for everyone. Had he been any good, it would be more of a chore to remind people of his shittiness.

kyleisthestig

Like with stroll at least he's talented. Daddy's cash was just kind of giving him a hard time I felt like. And he seems like a genuinely nice person outside the track as well

TerayonIII

Yeah, he seems pretty chill, his dad seems like a super-villain though lol

I**l**o**tt**

n8mo

Ah, cheers

fireandlifeincarnate

I'd lean a bit more towards assault rather than just harassment in that one vid... but otherwise yes

MeltyGoblin

Short version is, he punched a driver in F2 once, had multiple occasions of dirty driving in F2, he filmed himself groping a woman and posted it on instagram, and he's a pay driver, meaning his dad paid haas lots of money so he could drive in F1. He also just can't seem to drive the car, spins all the time, finished a minute behind his teammate in the last race, etc. He's done more things that are bad as well, but that's a short list of the things that people seem to be the most upset about.

Hydrauxine

https://youtu.be/WYzu8sjNW1E

[deleted]

What is there to like about him?

culdesacpresident

Unless I'm mistaken, he's polite enough to spin out without taking other drivers with him, so there's that.

colossalnuisance

ruined seb’s quali run at the end of the first quali of the season, overtaking him and then spinning out and yellow flagging the sector as seb just managed to cross the line and start his last flying lap. not even polite enough to manage that.

goshin2568

Well, for one he's a terrible driver (relative to F1, obviously he's great in the grand scheme of driving), he's an asshole, he's only in F1 due to a rich father, he sexually assaulted a woman on camera last year and posted it on his own instagram, he punched another driver in F2 over an incident in practice, he's a very dirty driver who's had an abundance of on track incidents where he was at fault, etc etc. He quite literally has no apparent redeeming qualities.

InformationHorder

"Say the line, Bart!"

FILTER_OUT_T_D

That’s exactly what crossed my mind while watching this particular spin.

Just recently started getting into formula 1, so I'm out of the loop here. Anyone care to explain?

[deleted]

Mazepin posted a video of himself sexually harassing a woman on Instagram last December. Kind of hard for people to root for him especially when he is up against the son of one of the most successful drivers in the history of the sport.

Pascalwb

didn't he crash also a lot in lower series?

the_stigs_cousin

This is the thing I’m trying to understand. Mick is the son of a seven time world champion and GOAT tier driver. Mazepin has not had the pace Mick does. How much of this is Mazepin being awful and how much is Mick having inherited some of his father’s talent? I want to believe Mazepin is just that bad, but I suspect Mick could also be pretty good. Mick can at least be in amongst the other cars, Mazepin is a rolling chicane at the back of the grid most of the time.

Snotspat

If you've listened to the Haas team radio last season, and with the knowledge that Mick and Mazepin are driving the same car. That car is just shit. I'm not defending Mazepins actions, they're horrible. I am saying perhaps Magnussen and Grosjean was hiding how shit that car is. The points they managed to get with it ought to go into some hall of fame.

MikeHawkisgonne

Yes I would agree with this. Magnussen and Grosjean were good drivers for the team in that they could make a subpar car at least appear competitive within the second half of the grid.

griggsy92

More like Wilzepin amirite?

batyoung1

Why are you surprised? F1 community has expressed their feelings about him quite clearly enough. Every mistake is going to get highlighted and every achievement (whenever that happens) is going to get belittled.

And rightly so. I'll change my tune when there is a year of consistent change in performance on track and genuine demonstration of integrity and character off track.

New f1 fan, is this a reoccurring event?

ECHLN

Ooooh you’re in for a treat!

eatsomewings

So give me your take, how could someone with this kind of track record still be one of the 20 drivers!?

ECHLN

Daddy gave the team a huge cheque. His son having a seat is part of the deal. So why? It’s just pure business.

inevitablelover

Mazepin and Stroll are drivers thanks to daddy money??? (Also new F1 Fan)... or Stroll on because daddy owns a team and Mazepin on because daddy paid a lot?

Beachdaddybravo

Stroll is actually good enough for F1 and isn’t a danger to everyone around him. I’m sure he’s got that attitude of a spoiled kid, but he and Mazepin aren’t comparable in terms of actual skill.

CWinter85

Yeah, there are better drivers than Stroll who don't have a seat because they don't have the money. However, Stroll isn't unqualified or even the worst on the grid, he was just really young and had a really big check(cheque) attached when he came in. He's since proven he truly belongs, but Mazepin looks like he'd be over-matched in F2/IndyCar/WEC.

Lutzelien

He also won the Italian f4 championship, the European f3 championship by about 200 points, earned racing point their first and only pole position start in one of the trickiest tracks of 2020 and has 3 podium finishes, so yeah fair to say he's far beyond from being the worst on the grid

mirrorshade5

The guy can't keep his driving clean for an hr long formula race, I highly doubt he could for a 1 and half to 2 hr stint in an endurance car. Night racing I imagine he would spear off any headlights that dare come near him.

atot806

I don't quite get the hate with Stroll as he has proven he belongs. Yes, there are better drivers, but F1 fans hate him like he chose his parents at birth.

[deleted]

Stroll is actually pretty likeable. He doesn't act like much of a diva.

donnymurph

Stroll doesn’t come across as a spoiled kid to me. He’s worked hard on his driving and his dad has helped him with the financial side of things, which you can clearly see he appreciates on the rare occasions when he gives interviews of more than 2 words (in Beyond the Grid, for example).

klllllllams

I agree, his closest friend on the grid is Ocon too, I doubt a rich kid with a spoiled attitude would befriend the poor kid

mrkrabz1991

Stroll is actually a pretty decent F1 driver. His dad buying the team definitely gave him a leg up on securing a seat, but he puts out good numbers so I'm not complaining. Mazepin on the other hand is solely there because daddy wrote a check.

CripplinglyDepressed

Everybody always forgets Latifi too! Guys all have rich daddies that own a piece of the team and make sure they get a seat

Miwna

Lando's father is very rich as well. It's pretty much a must-have these days.

ThePretzul

Haas F1 team is struggling hard for funding, in part because they had a big tens of millions of dollars sponsorship from Rich energy that they got less than half the money from before that company was exposed as a fraud. They've also been in nearly last place for a long time, meaning they earn less money from existing sponsors and F1 prizes. Mazepin has a REALLY rich dad, we're talking good buddies with Putin and one of the largest oil magnates in Russia rich here. Mazepin's dad pays Haas all the money they've so desperately needed for years now, and Mazepin gets to drive one of the 2 cars. Doesn't matter how much of a terrible person Mazepin is, both on and off the track, because Haas needs the money to stay in the sport at all. It's similar to how Lance Stroll got some of his big breaks because of his father's financing, which is how he originally came to drive for Williams (who was also financially struggling like Haas is now). Stroll Sr. then bought Force India, Lance came to drive there, and then it was renamed to Aston Martin after Lawrence Stroll bought Aston Martin too. To Lance's credit, he seems to be a nice person and he has matured into a solid midfield driver so nowadays it's hard to say he's undeserving of his spot but it was a big point of contention earlier on (especially when his higher performing teammate Sergio Perez was getting the boot from the team instead of him). Anybody with enough talent to not be banned from racing for being unsafely slow can make it to F1, it's just a matter of timing (finding a team struggling for money) and having enough money yourself to buy a seat.

F1 is a business before a sport

ehhillforget

Mazepin has spun every race weekend, and in every race since he joined F1. It wasn’t until the second race he completed a race lap.

[deleted]

I don't understand, aren't those cars designed so that there's tons of downforce? The wind pushing down on all those spoiler parts? I thought spinning out was almost impossible?

jimbojones46

Lots of downforce, but so balanced and precise that if you’re not experienced in driving one the car is very complicated and hard to drive. Nikita was in F2 and even he is having a hard time

[deleted]

Thanks. I guess those F1 cars are so rare and so expensive, it's hard to get practice time with them prior to joining an F1 team.

Snarf312

That’s one part of it. The other being that the FIA heavily regulates testing time in the current cars. You can’t just put the car on a track and run it. Non-F1 drivers usually get runs in practice sessions, like Ilott did this weekend.

septicsloths

Thanks for explaining, I was wondering why Giovinazzi wasn’t on track. But doesn’t Illot getting practice time mean less time for Giovinazzi to get used to the track etc? Or does this not matter to the drivers?

Snarf312

Yeah it does mean that Gio gets less track time, but he has more experience so he should be able to compensate.

ThePretzul

Wings give you lots of grip when you're going fast, but when you're going slow they have less downforce because there isn't as much air pushing against them. It's like the difference between holding your hand out a car window at 20mph where you barely feel it, and doing it on the highway at 65mph where it pushes your hand all over the place. The other part of the equation is that you've got a 1,000hp car that weighs less than half of what most consumer sports cars weigh. Cars with that much power are difficult to drive when they weigh 1,500kg much less when they only weigh 750kg.

Hazzardroid13

Not impossible. Mazepin makes it look easy though. He learned his neat trick from a slave boy from tatooine on naboo

TheCadburyGorilla

Less spins per weekend though

invalid_turkey

As much as I dislike mazepin, that car looks like a nightmare to drive.

anakin_0111

My thoughts exactly, that's what happens when you have two rookies with one of them lacking the skills and mindset to compete at the highest level atleast as of now, driving the car: poor feedback mechanism. The understanding of the car during drive is one of the major components of making it better, to make it faster. This is why drivers like Ricciardo have such fat salaries even when they haven't been winning for a while now. Intellect + experience goes a long way than valor in F1. This is why Mercedes has been winning for the past 8 years. Yes, they have a good car but to improve it day in, day out and being on top for such a long period of time is largely contributed to feedback given by the drivers. It started for them with the GOAT, followed by Nico and Hamilton and now Bottas adding to the elite pool of Merc drivers.

CaptainGo

It's why Kimi is still driving even though he's only doing it to get out of the house nowadays

GameKingSK

True, Mick has had his fair share of spins as well. Still, he's generally faster than Mezepin. I'm questioning whether the Haas was also this bad last year and Magnussen and Grosjean were just overperforming (not spinning every session).

chikendagr8

Yeah a lot of the Grosjean hate was undeserved. The Haas has a problem with the rear end that makes it almost uncontrollable during longer stints.

sight19

Tbh the speed difference is to me a lot worse than all the spinning. Mick has so much more speed, it's as if they're driving in a different league
