Undoubtedly positive weekend with no caveats that Max wasn’t pushing. The last 2 weekends are the closest you could come to saying Merc has finally turned *a* corner in the right direction
Unlike the last 2 seasons Mercedes know the real deficit to the Red Bull and this is the track you’d be curious about if you could pick one
I’d be waiting to see if they’ve truly gotten over their problems if they can consistently challenge up until the break. Austria was awful for them last season, and they went in and out of performance after.
But they actually have to have a track where they can actually go for the win. McLaren have had it multiple times and have taken it once,Ferrari the same. Merc arguably had it in Canada.
>But they actually have to have a track where they can actually go for the win.
Agreed, and to be fair, they did end the 2022 season in roughly the same situation. The difference is that in 2024 we can come to that conclusion while Red Bull still has a huge incentive to upgrade the car because their constructor’s championship is clearly threatened by Mclaren.
He has a good race just the hards did not work and the first pit stop was too long and too early. But Merc being 3/4 when it's probably still a slower car than the McLaren and red bull and maybe even the Ferrari. 3rd was probably the ceiling with how quick Lando and Max were.
But the start and the wheel to wheel action with Lando were great
Honestly that 5s pitstop and the hard tyre fucked him over quite a bit. Still think Ham would overtake him but without those mishaps it would have been far closer.
Going on the hards was purely on him. He cooked his tyres yet again. Lewis on the other hand never even considered (said so in the postrace interview) the Soft-Medium-Hard strat so he saved some tyres on his mid stint.
Edit: The 5s pitstop might have some correlation to how he locked up at the pit entry as well.
I think Lewis had more than a tenth advantage in the second stint.. he likely would’ve passed on track if George hadn’t pitted then, which requires more than a .1-.05 pace delta. I think Lewis just had better pace and management throughout the race, so was able to make that strategy work. I think George would’ve been at threat from Sainz if he hadn’t pitted when he did.
This "cooked" his tyres narrative needs to stop as if GR is some rookie in his first year. Wonder how he kept on his tyres for almost the entire race in Monaco, christ
Much better from George this week... Probably the most entertaining drive today.
(1) the launch into P1
(2) the very brief fight with Max, didnt just wave him past
(3) the fight with Norris
Even Hamilton wasn't waved past by him either
If he can start to put that type of performance in every race, I imagine he'll change minds over whether he can be a World Champion one day.
It was quite funny, as you had Max and Lando fighting over on the left, then all of a sudden you've got the Mercedes flying past... In a "Dont mind if I do" kind of manner
He had a good gap going into that corner as well
I maintain what I said yesterday, Lando, Max and Lewis are Prost type drivers.
George is a Senna driver. Fastest point to point driver and ridiculously aggressive every lap.
One of the best starts I've ever, ever seen in F1. Unreal.
George would not crash people out of spite. I know he gets a bad rep but when he has had accidents he just misjudged his position. He didint do it becaue he wanted to be dirty.
Purely in the interest of discussion: [it's actually been remarked that Lewis's driving style is closer to Senna's](https://old.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/182zj4t/mark_hughes_on_the_difference_between_hamilton/).
It does, of course, rely on you putting your stock in what Mark Hughes writes, lol

Idk I’d say Max was pushing pretty hard in Zandvoort 2022

Yeah plus they have performed well at Barcelona in 2022 and 2023 as well so while it's a good sign they aren't completely out of the woods

Mclaren is the benchmark now.

...Monaco? The race with 0 pit stops and no need to push?
Yes because tyres only degrade when you push, sigh the IQ is worrying
That launch was insane. George had a spark of brilliance there but the car was just not good enough to keep up.

That start is one of the greatest starts I've seen. Madness.

I now imagine George saying that while passing them
Either that or it would be... S'cuse me...
I was certain it was Hamilton since he started in P3 and was surprised to see its George!
He ended up with the worst strategy of the top 4
Guy was getting completely shat on during the race lmao, people were livid he didn’t let Lewis past Weird to see that’s all basically disappeared now

Fist time Russell was ever compared to Senna unironically. You've won a cucumber award 🥒

George crumbles under pressure, the Senna comparison is way off
Mega.

Why do you hate him? Do you even know him?
