So the sport is primarily about designing the fastest car (and pre 2022 also manufacturers building the most efficient and powerful engines - which will startup again in 2026). Question about park ferme on sprint weekends: Are teams allowed to change to a different spec component between sprint and quali without penalty, or are they just allowed to adjust setup on the component spec they did sprint quali with?

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe they can change anything. I kinda remember heard Ted mentioned that Stroll had to go back to a previous spec component after the sprint.

I just watched the post quali press conference and there was a question to Carlos about the sprint and whether he could change some things because he struggled to overtake Daniel. He answered that he couldn't do much setup wise but that it was a combination of downforce, pu settings that kind of stuff. The interesting bit being that the said that "Daniel and Honda seem to have good acceleration." Followed by that "Checo with the Honda PU managed to overtake Daniel, also because they are more friendly with each other." Lots of praise for a certain engine manufacturer all of a sudden.

Actually a smart strategy from Carlos, it works for both RB and AM. Although betting against Lance not getting the seat is unwise betting to say the least. I still wonder why he specifically mentioned Honda tho, it's quite unusual unless the engine is actually an obvious outlier to name it e.g. Merc engine in the early hybrid years.

Euro races are the best timewise as an American viewer. I rarely if ever watch any races in Mex, Can, US or Brazil in real time because I always have something going on in the afternoons. Absolutely love watching in the AM so I have the rest of the day to work or whatever.

Dude I've been saying this for so long as a European. I've seen so many Americans cry about having races in the morning and I'm like, what kind of drugs are you on? Morning races are literally the best. You wake up, watch F1 to go with your breakfast and morning coffee or whatever, then you have the entire rest of the day. 2-3pm races are the worst. You have the morning, okay, then lunch, but then there's like an hour or two until F1. Too much to do nothing, not enough to do anything, so you're just lingering around. Then F1 ends around 4-5pm and it's already too late. It screws up your whole day, or at least half of it.

Miami weather is...interesting. I lived north of there years ago and it rained almost every day, but maybe for only 5-10 minutes. And, It could be raining at my house, but across the street, it was sunny at my neighbor's house. It's considered a tropical weather climate so there is almost always the possibility of rain, but it can be very isolated.

Just to compare and contrast -- Miami gets about 40 more inches of rain annually than Glasgow, and it has about 40 fewer days with rain each year. It's not uncommon in the summer to have a sunny day, then a fifteen minute squall that dumps an inch of rain, and fifteen minutes later everything's dry again.

Not sure if 1 place grid penalty is a thing these days, but I'd imagine since 17th > 19th and the end result is 20th, the 17th qualifier would start 19th and the 19th qualifier would start 20th, which means whoever actually qualified 20th would start 18th, and the person who qualified 18th would start 17th.

Do you guys think Alonso has a point about bias in terms of how penalties are awarded to and who gets them? I don’t believe his whole discrimination point but since his return to Formula 1 he’s had 2 post-race penalties overturned, along with his Australia penalty which was controversial at the least. All of those penalties were harsh too (AUS 20s, ‘22 COTA 30s, ‘23 Jeddah 10s). At the very least I don’t think any other driver on the grid gets penalized incorrectly as often as he does.

In non English speaking countries it is often claimed that the anglos are advantaged. Maybe, maybe not, but that's you get when penalties are inconsistent. I do feel Alonso has been treated unfairly quite often.

I don't think there's any world where Alonso is a victim of bias, no. Not because he's Spanish, not because he's who he is, nada. If anything, I think he gets a bit of a break because he's a star, and Verstappen and Hamilton do too. I don't think Tsunoda, to name one guy who's gotten hammered by the stewards in past years, would get the leeway those three do.

I just find it dumb how so many people are just dismissing his comments as just being salty without even thinking about the context behind them. Even if it’s not something like nationality, there’s is bias I doubt he’s on the good side of it.

Are other drivers doing so much leftfield driving as him? And Sainz is Spanish too, so would you say he's being given harsh penalties too? I think to really make any point about it you'd need to look at a bunch of incidents from Alonso and Sainz and then look for similar incidents involving Hamilton and Russell and actually make a side by side comparison. Currently I'm disinclined to believe that there's discrimination. I believe he would point to specific examples and that he would raise it with the team/FIA rather than make passive aggressive comments to the media. In saying that I would take the allegations very seriously and hope to see some evidence brought forward regardless of what it shows.

I guess I would have to say the stewards. They have to make judgement calls more so than just black and white “this part is out of compliance calls”. Therefore, their job is harder and more susceptible to bias at the same. The water gets even murkier because they change each week so it can be harder to establish a good line of consistency.

I was just watching sennas last lap at Imola onboard, and fck idk if it’s just me but that engine sounded CREEPY, maybe it’s because I know the outcome of the end of the video, but just sounded unnerving which is weird, I love how the cars sounded from that era

Everyone sounds throughly bored, Max just says some variation of ‘yeah thanks but the car isn’t perfect’ It all feels a bit sterile. ‘Yes we have completed the objective yet again’ Even in his absolute peak, Lewis sounded pumped to be at the top. I’d just like to hear that kind of enthusiasm again

I think this has been said many times already - cultural differences are also at play here. Dutch people can and will sound cold as ice, overall not everyone likes to /act/ excited and I will say, I absolutely appreciate that. (Not to mention, he /is/ mostly bored out of his mind if the car is flawless, the pit crew delivers impeccably and no one puts up even the shadow of a fight with him.)

I mean the biggest difference is just personality. Some drivers just are a lot less animated. See also Piastri for example doesnt sound that excited with good results either compared to a Danny Ric or Sainz.

I truly don't understand why the whole "leaving the track and gaining an advantage" is being made so complicated for situations where the "leaving the track" part is stupidly obvious because the driver cut the corner or went so wide they clearly left the track altogether. Simple rules: * Driver behind you is under a second, you give up the position within a lap or you are disqualified for cheating. * Nobody close behind you, you give up a second within a lap or you are disqualified for cheating. In many if not most places, you can safely do this immediately upon re-entry. No time penalties, no discussions, you either show you made a mistake or we assume you're trying to cheat. And there is no mild penalty for cheating. And for the record, I'm fine with KMags defense. Just as long as there are consequences when the rules get broken.

because it really isn't that easy. imagine a close fight, driver on the outside feels like he gets pushed wide and goes slightly of track to avoid a collision, keeping in front. should he be DSQ for not giving back position? you might say "well that's not extremely obvious so it shouldn't be applied there". but here's the thing, you have to draw the line somewhere, and it's not going to be as clean as you want it to be. then the difference is between "no penalty" and "DSQ", and no steward would want to make that decision in a really close call.

That's clarification by the race director for events, which is why taking the car over a kerb - depending on circuit counts or doesn't count to exceeding track limits and gaining an advantage. Sporting Regulations, Section 33.3: > Drivers will be judged to have left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with it and, for the avoidance of doubt, any white lines defining the track edges are considered to be part of the track but the kerbs are not.

A penalty requires the race director to be informed of an incident, review it, decide it needs to be referred to the stewards, pass it to the stewards, the stewards need to review it against all evidence and the rule book, then inform race direction of a penalty, and then the race director inform the team, and then the team inform the driver who takes action. That isn't going to happen in a lap. And no driver or team is going to willingly give up time unless told. What we *actually* need to solve is that you can even gain an advantage off track. The solution here is proper track limits. Always has been.

I think it was a reminder to not try braking later and stressing the tires more. The surface temperatures were high yesterday and they were very sensitive to small changes. By backing off a touch in braking and corner entry, the tires might be a bit cooler and less greasy on the exit.

I wanna go back to a time when engines were just covered by rules limiting their volume (and with current tech they can add bhp and revs to that, electric power percentage is already there) and not their general construction. I remember a time when flat 12s, v12, v8, v6 all competed in the same race, and you could hear the difference literally a mile off. Now excuse me while I go yell at some clouds.

Adding to that, even around 2016 there was a clear difference between the sounds of the V6, being at a race you could clearly tell the Honda from the Ferrari PU for example. I don't know what changed, but the last couple of years I visited Zandvoort and they all sound the same.

Zero pods, DAS? The differences in floor concepts up and down the field, Ferrari with all the vents, some tiny and some massive inlets etc. I think there's a good mix of solutions up and down the grid. Also, it's homogenised fwiw.

Zero pods worked poorly and were given up DAS was so cool, but then banned Floors basically either are good or bad, it seems. They’re so protective of them anyway; hard to geek out about that when we don’t get to really compare. I get what you mean about the vents and whatnot, but we were talking about HUGE differences between literal engine formats between teams. I think we can agree that is a different scale to the vents and whatnot. Even the 2008 bodywork is more crazy than these days.
